Bentley AD Vaughn Williams joins Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss the DII landscape, NCAA President Charlie Baker’s leadership, what’s on deck for the Falcons and more. On the future for DII: “I am encouraged. There's a lot of emerging sports, there’s things that are opening up and obviously to have the AQ and do those types of things so I think we continue to head in that direction. Having access to championships is critically important. […] I'm encouraged about how it's going and I think we're going to continue to look at the model and see how we can get it better.” Asked what is on deck for the Falcons: “We're starting to put the foundation and pieces for resource and revenue generation and collaboration across campus has been great so I think we're well on our way to set the foundation and move and get the partners on campus in our community to continue to help us do what we do. I'm proud of our student-athletes. They've handled it extremely well. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger joins The Paul Finebaum Show and notes the Protecting Student-Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act is the furthest a college athletics bill has advanced since the NCAA began lobbying Congress five years ago to “create helpful college athletic legislation.” The bill is now one step away from a full floor debate and vote, but Dellenger notes Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) now control the bill’s fate, “and I can tell you right now there are not plans to bring the bill forward in the House. Now, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in a month, in three months, in five months. But right now there are not immediate plans to bring the bill to the House. Still, the fact that it got this far, it is significant.” Looking ahead, Dellenger agrees that a GOP-controlled White House and Senate would likely make for a “smoother, quicker path in having college athletic legislation move through the chambers and become law. It may be the most significant November, the most impactful November election for college athletic legislation. (link)

FloSports CEO Mark Floreani pens an op-ed for Sportico following the announcement of FloCollege’s launch, noting of the venture: “The mission is to build a single destination that can elevate our partner programs while infusing a new revenue stream to support them. We believe, as do our partner conferences, that this can tackle several critical obstacles while also creating a meaningful business opportunity for FloSports.” Floreani goes on to posit the impact of long-tail benefits the platform would have on awareness, media attention, fundraising, community investment, coverage of women’s sports and more. In conclusion: “From securing better funding for schools to raising the profiles of women’s sports and fostering community, the benefits are manifold. We have the opportunity to create a more equitable and vibrant landscape for collegiate athletics, where every athlete, regardless of division, has the chance to shine. This isn’t a pro bono effort, of course. We are creating a marketplace for Division II and III sports, one that we believe will drive a significant increase of subscribers to the FloSports platform. The more success we have with our partners, the bigger the opportunity becomes for everyone.” (link)

Colleges and universities will be unable to submit corrections to student FAFSA records in bulk until the first half of August, the Department of Education has announced. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the “net effect is that some students with special circumstances still cannot receive final financial aid offers or financial aid for the 2024-25 school year.” NASFAA President/CEO Justin Draeger: “The idea that some college students are hoping to begin classes in a matter of weeks and are still unable to get a final financial aid offer is unacceptable. … In the end, it’s the most vulnerable students who will once again be harmed by this delay. This patchwork functionality is not how the system is intended to operate and is exactly the kind of situation that we hope to avoid for next year’s FAFSA. That’s why we continue to urge the Department to ensure that the entire FAFSA system — from the application itself to processing and the ability to make corrections — is up and running smoothly at the time the application goes live."
