Memphis President Bill Hardgrave is believed to be targeting the end of next week for a formal announcement of the Tigers’ next AD, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz, who reports that Interim AD Jeff Crane, Tennessee Deputy AD/Chief Resource Officer Ryan Alpert, Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt and Kansas State Alumni Association President/CEO Adam Walker “have emerged as the most serious contenders for the job. … This comes after a round of interviews this week that also included Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White, Virginia Deputy AD Ed Scott and Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison.” Also from Munz: “Crane, whose interview took place Tuesday, according to sources, has been considered a frontrunner since the process began when AD Laird Veatch left for Missouri in April. He has been consistently open about his desire to be named the permanent AD.” (link)

More from freshly minted Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller, who says: “I wanted to be an AD at the right place, with the right fit, with the right leadership, and the right resources around me that I could be successful and the university and athletics department could be successful. Being two-and-a-half hours down the road for a while, I watched this program and I watched this university grow, I watched the success that was happening here, and I always told Lauren if this job ever came open, this is one I was going to run to.” Miller explains he plans to build a successful culture by promoting continuity and collaboration: “It’s important to me that the university and athletics department are one, and we’re all moving in the same direction. I did that at South Carolina and I know I can do it here. You want to expand that reach, and that’s the way we can do it, by bringing everyone together and working toward a common goal.” Also: “I have audacious goals. I told everybody on the search committee, and those goals are out there and we will get there. It will be a lot of work, it will be a lot of time and a lot of effort, but I promise you we will get there. … We’re going to innovate. I love to be the first one to do it, and that is more important than ever in this ever-changing world of college athletics. We have to be nimble and we have to innovate, and we will do that. I want people to look at Coastal Carolina and say, ‘How in the world did they do that, and how do we copy it?’" (link)

Ross Jr.: “The visionary and dynamic leadership of Commissioner McClelland has helped propel our conference to prominence on a national stage while also increasing the availability of financial resources that have positively impacted the overall student-athlete experience. The NCAA Thursday asked the NLRB for permission to file an amicus brief in support of Dartmouth, arguing that the men’s basketball team’s attempt to become employees will “affect and have a far-reaching impact” on all “current and future” college athletes and “the NCAA membership as a whole.” According to Sportico’s Michael McCann, “if the NLRB accepts the NCAA’s 32-page amicus brief, the agency’s board will see that, like Dartmouth, the NCAA portrays the ‘unprecedented’ nature of college athletes as employees in a problematic light.” The NCAA further contends the recognition of a single team as a bargaining unit would destabilize labor relations and emphasizes that NLRB cases involving pro sports have involved “league-wide bargaining units” rather than one team. McCann: “This type of argument has resonated with the NLRB in the past,” particularly in the Northwestern case a decade ago. “The NCAA finds itself in a tricky spot arguing that employment would harm college sports given that the NCAA hopes to settle three antitrust cases (House v. NCAA, Carter v. NCAA and Hubbard v. NCAA) in part by adopting a pay-for-play model. The settlement, which is not yet finalized and requires approval by U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken, contemplates colleges, like teams in a pro league, being able to pay athletes in a salary cap and revenue-sharing framework.” SEIU Local 560 President Chris Peck asserts this is a “simple case of disguised employment where the Regional Director followed established precedent and applied the law as intended.” (link)

Ohio State expects to report an operating deficit of more than $10M for the fiscal year, according to the Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman, who notes the shortfall is seen as “largely the result of last fall’s reduced slate of home football games.” OSU played just six games in Columbus in 2023 and Kaufman points out that a few factors “tilt in Ohio State’s favor in the months ahead.” For instance, the football schedule features eight home games, and though it does “not include a marquee non-conference opponent," it does include a November 30 visit from Michigan. WDRB’s Eric Crawford reports from the Louisville Athletic Association’s meeting and notes football ticket sales generated $26.2M, men’s basketball tickets were $1.9M short of budget, the ACC Network studio on campus exceeded revenue projections by $400K and the university provided $5M to “offset significant one-time costs,” and the Cardinals went $1.5M over the initial travel budget. Unbudgeted costs for the fiscal year included a final payout to Papa John’s Founder John Schnatter of $2M, a $1.1M buyout to Charleston for hiring Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey, credit card fees that went $540K over budget and $400K on the ACC Championship game in football. Budget challenges for next season include having only six home football games, six road trips to California, inflation and new NCAA rules, such as paying for more family members on recruiting trips, etc. Upcoming revenue goals include increasing football season ticket sales by 10% to 40K, increasing men’s basketball season tickets by 30% to 12K, and selling out one football game, among others. Arizona outlines its five-point plan to reduce its $33.6M athletics shortfall, per the Arizona Daily Star’s Bruce Pascoe. The plan includes $500K annually in decreased leadership personnel costs and a streamlined organizational chart, paying back its loans “in accordance with future net revenue instead of paying them back on a fixed schedule,” shifting some athletics costs to the university’s general budget and more. Interim CFO John Arnold projects $9.1M in extra revenue through development and parking, a $2.5M cut in operations, $3.1M in expense transfers for utilities and security and $26.5M in FY25 “by eliminating a $7.1 million administrative service charge that the university was charging and by ‘rebasing’ its debt.” On the revenue side, consultants from Ernst & Young recommended maximizing dynamic pricing opportunities and reducing the amount of complimentary tickets, with AD Desiree Reed-Francois noting “that 54% of UA’s revenue was in their control.” More. Coaches Corner: Extensions…
+ Oklahoma Football HC Brent Venables agrees to a six-year extension. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Venables will earn $7.225M in 2024 and $7.625M in 2025 before eventually bringing in $7.925M in the contract’s final year. Sooners Illustrated’s Tom Green reports the deal is worth a total of $51.6M with average annual compensation of $8.6M, including $8.15M in 2024 ($7.225M + plus an annual installment of $600K that goes toward retirement). (link, link)
+ Massachusetts Men’s Basketball HC Frank Martin’s contract extension includes a $2M salary starting immediately. That figure will go up to $2.4M by Year 5. UMass also added $600K to the AC pool and has three assistants now paid between $240K-$350K. If Martin leaves, he would owe UMass $1.25M initially. That total drops to $625K by the final year. If UMass terminates the deal without cause, it would owe Martin $4M initially with subsequent decreases to under $1M in the final year. (link)

Houston has parted ways with AD Chris Pezman after nearly seven years. One person familiar with Pezman’s year-end meeting with Khator tells the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte the decision “was a surprise to him.” Pezman had 18 months left on his contract and is owed $350K. Duarte also reports Pezman “began to lose support, particularly among the top level of UH’s hierarchy, and there was a ‘consensus decision’ for a change. … One issue was UH’s lack of progress to increase revenue through fundraising and sponsorships, especially at a time when the men’s basketball program has been one of the best in the nation the past six years.” Additionally, Pezman’s decision to interview for the Washington AD job “did not sit well with UH leadership,” per Duarte. SVC/VP for Administration and Finance Raymond S. Bartlett will serve as Interim AD. (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips remarked during yesterday’s Associated Press Sports Editors annual meeting that “There’s going to be a reset in college sports. And it’s OK. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be the end of college sports, by any means. It’s going to look different.” The News & Observer’s Andrew Carter notes that during a 45-minute Q&A session the “only questions Phillips didn’t want to answer were about the degree to which the ACC would embrace funding from private equity…and whether the ACC might consider selling its own naming rights.” When asked, Phillips replied that in the ACC “you’re looking at all areas of revenue.” Phillips called the lawsuits filed by Clemson and Florida State “damaging” and “harmful” to the league and added: “This is a beautiful league that’s been around a long time. Seventy years. And it’s meant a lot – to this part of the country, and to college sports. And the success that this league has had, the opportunities this league has had, for young people. I’ll stand up against any league, about what it’s delivered for young people. So we’re going to fight. I’m going to fight. And the courts will ultimately decide. And we believe that everybody knows what was in that contract back then. And it was celebrated. And people were excited. A new network (with ESPN). We’d just lost Maryland, and it was a chance for unity and togetherness and the rest of it. And there was a unanimous acceptance of, ‘this is a great deal for the ACC.’ And that has changed in the minds of a couple.” Phillips on sports gambling, particularly prop betting involving student-athletes: “Absolutely, that is a runaway train, if we can’t get our hands on that. Props are definitely – that’s a major concern. ... I’m very concerned about the safety of student-athletes, certainly concerned about game fixing.” More. (link)

Lawyers for Houston Christian have filed a motion seeking to intervene in the House settlement asking a federal judge to declare the proposed agreement is "void and of no effect.” In the motion, HCU attorneys argue the “proposed settlement will adversely affect HCU. None of the parties, particularly the Defendants, has consulted with – much less taken any step to protect – HCU’s interests. Neither HCU nor its conference were parties to this litigation, had a seat at the negotiating table, or had any input into any resolution of this matter, including the proposed settlement.” They add that the settlement “forces the trustees and administrators of HCU and other similarly situated institutions to confront a Hobson’s Choice; it is a coercive take-it-or-leave-it offer that disregards the fiduciary duties trustees and others have to their institutions and stakeholders. It will divert funds from a university’s core academic mission in favor of big-time sports entertainment.” House plaintiffs’ co-counsel Steve Berman tells USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: "There is no settlement that has been finalized or filed, so I question how this school can intervene in opposition to something that is not done. … To the extent the settlement requires defendants to spend money on past damages, it is because the defendants broke the law and agreed to collusively keep the gains of college athletics for themselves. HCU’s complaints about this, to the extent they are being asked to contribute to the settlement fund, should be with those who perpetrated the conspiracy for so long, not the college athletes who have been denied their fair share of the billions their labor helped generate for years." Indiana AD Scott Dolson tells the Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman the athletic department has anticipated for a potential revenue-sharing scenario for a while and adds: “Coming out of COVID, because we had a similar exercise in terms of trying to scrub our budgets, scrub our resources, it’s not like this is brand new for us. … As different dominos fall, every bit of information we can get helps us frame our decision making. The biggest decisions will be made relative to the scholarship offerings per sport and how to analyze and allocate those.” Dolson also notes that “having been through the evolution of NIL, which continues to evolve, I think we did learn a lot of lessons from that. I think it gives us confidence moving forward into this new opportunity in terms of revenue-sharing.” (link)

The Michigan Board of Regents approved the Wolverines’ 2024-25 operating budget, which forecasts revenues to $255.7M and operating expenses of $253.6M. For the current fiscal year, the athletic department projects a slight operating surplus of $0.2M based on operating revenues of $230.6M and operating expenses of $230.4M. U-M projects FY25 distributions from the Big Ten to increase by $12.9M. Also, “spectator admissions revenues will fluctuate over the next several fiscal years due to an imbalanced conference football schedule. Spectator admissions revenues are projected to increase by $14.8M in FY25 due to an increase in home football games, from a seven-game schedule in 2023 to an eight-game home schedule in 2024, combined with a slight increase in ticket pricing.” (link); USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz notes that based on Michigan’s budget and Big Ten 990 filings, “per-school revenue shares for FY25 likely will be around $75M.” (link)
|
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reverse engineers Washington’s proposed budget in which the Huskies expect $42M in Big Ten distributions and explains: “If we add the half share of media rights revenue the Huskies will not collect ($30M) to their total revenue figure ($42M), it suggests the schools receiving full shares — including USC and UCLA — will collect checks worth about $72M from the conference. That represents a 20% increase over the most recent distribution figure available.” Wilner goes on to point out that “the Big Ten’s deal includes an escalator clause: The payments in the first year are far lower than the payments in 2029-30, the final year of the agreement. (Presumably, annual increases are 4 or 5%.). But because Year One of the Big Ten’s agreement with Fox, NBC and CBS unfolded in 2023-24, before the West Coast schools joined the conference, the full-share payment of $60.5M cited by USA Today could be even lower than what would typically be the case.” While there are too many unknowns to determine the amount of the league’s distributions several years out, Wilner notes that by “applying the insight gained from Washington’s budget presentation to the other breadcrumbs available, including the looming bump in CFP payments, it appears the full-share Big Ten schools will take home in excess of $90M in conference distributions in the second half of the decade. For Washington and Oregon, that likely means paychecks in the $60M to $65M range.” (link)

Under a clause in his contract titled "potential changes to the financial model for collegiate athletics,” Texas A&M Football HC Mike Elko could renegotiate his deal with the Aggies. According to 247Sports’ Carter Karels, the clause stipulates that if such a change creates a "serious financial exigency" for the athletic department, TAMU could provide notice to Elko that it occurred, engage in "good faith negotiations" and, if necessary, adjust his $7M base salary and incentives. Elko’s contract also states that his buyout starts at $5.5M in year two before decreasing to $4M, $2.5M, $1M and $0 in subsequent years. Should Texas A&M terminate the contract, it would owe Elko 75% of the annual base salary for the remaining term of the agreement if there are three or more years remaining. The percentage increases to 80% after that. (link)

Arizona is projecting a $33.6M budget shortfall for FY24 on $95.2M in revenue and $128.8M in expenses, according to a presentation to regents. (link); More from Tucson as Arizona has created Arizona Sports Enterprises (ASE) to manage its multimedia rights agreements and operations. Wildcats AD Desireé Reed-Francois: "The creation of Arizona Sports Enterprises will allow Arizona Athletics to strengthen its connection to corporate sponsors, elevate Arizona Athletics as a brand and allow the athletics department to focus on delivering more value to its partners. A strong financial model is critical to our ability to continue providing a first-class experience for our student-athletes to compete at the highest level, to develop as champions in the classroom and to serve as a point of pride for the University of Arizona. We want to thank our longtime rightsholder, Learfield, for their partnership and support of our student-athletes and athletics department over the years." ASE plans to engage with Learfield as its exclusive third-party national sales firm. (link)

Coastal Carolina President Michael Benson talks more about the planned 8,000-seat arena: “Several of our Chanticleer athletic teams will continue to be housed in the HTC Center for training and practice purposes but will use the Convocation Center for home contests. We would also welcome the opportunity to host statewide high school athletic championships and tournaments as well as collegiate and other competitions.” Benson also says the arena “will have the capacity to host concerts, high school graduations, and assemblies, as well as provide a space to host our neighbor and partner – Horry-Georgetown Technical College – for their commencement activities. For CCU, we will finally have a home to conduct most of our University-wide and college-specific ceremonies, which have outgrown our space in the HTC Center.” Additionally, Benson notes the project will be funded through the Penny Sales Tax and is part of a proposed two-facility complex. “Horry County and its citizens have supported our institution since its inception in 1954 through various means including the renewal of the Penny Sales Tax in 2022 for an additional 15 years. … As another symbol of our gratitude for this decades-long partnership with our home county, we intend to construct a Convocation Center for use by our community. A center like the one we are proposing is certainly needed as a gathering place for our community in one of the fastest-growing counties in the country.” (link)

New on Connect: RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick sits down for a conversation with UNLV AD Erick Harper and IC360 CEO Matt Holt on sports betting. The three discuss the importance of educating student-athletes, the state of the gambling industry and whether or not the House Settlement will have an impact. They also outline anonymous reporting tools such as Alert360 and why athletic departments should rely on third party organizations to help them navigate sensitive and complex challenges in the sports betting space. Harper cites the widespread access and acceptability of sports betting as reasons why the education piece is so important, but adds: “I think too many times we don’t show the pitfalls enough for our student-athletes. It’s always the story, ‘Hey, I just made XYZ dollars, but they don’t see the pitfalls and see the things that happen on the negative side. … We’ve just got to continuously do our best to show our athletes to understand, one, they can’t do it and, two, show them the spreadsheet. Here’s how much money you have. If you make this bet and you lose it and you make this bet and you lose and you lose, the next thing you know you're sitting in front of someone that you don't want to be sitting in front of.” (link)
