Baldwin Wallace (NCAA DIII) Dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences Steve Dittmore writes about the decision by Concordia (MI) to discontinue athletics after 2024-25 and the broader enrollment growth through athletics strategy. The university made the decision to shutter its athletic department, which had a $9.2M budget in FY23 and 652 student-athletes, in the face of a $9M structural deficit. CUAA specifically stated their strategy to grow enrollment through athletics, with 80% of the student body competing in athletics, that resulted in “significantly raised operational costs for the campus–to the point that the campus now spends every dollar it generates in revenue.” Dittmore: “I have been consistent in my caution regarding using sports to “rejuvenate” small colleges. There increasingly seems to be a tipping point when the percentage of athletes on a campus exceeds the percentage of non-athletes. […] Each of the schools [that recently announced they will close] with fewer than 1,000 total students had 44 percent or more of its student enrollment as athletes. […] Can we conclude definitively there is a direct cause-and-effect between a university’s financial difficulties and having 44% or more of the student body as athletes? No, of course not. A myriad of variables can contribute to a university’s financial challenges. But it does seem safe to say there is a relationship there, and that merely adding sports in an attempt to grow enrollment may not be the savior administrators hope it will be.” (link)

Colleges and universities will be unable to submit corrections to student FAFSA records in bulk until the first half of August, the Department of Education has announced. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the “net effect is that some students with special circumstances still cannot receive final financial aid offers or financial aid for the 2024-25 school year.” NASFAA President/CEO Justin Draeger: “The idea that some college students are hoping to begin classes in a matter of weeks and are still unable to get a final financial aid offer is unacceptable. … In the end, it’s the most vulnerable students who will once again be harmed by this delay. This patchwork functionality is not how the system is intended to operate and is exactly the kind of situation that we hope to avoid for next year’s FAFSA. That’s why we continue to urge the Department to ensure that the entire FAFSA system — from the application itself to processing and the ability to make corrections — is up and running smoothly at the time the application goes live."
