Lees-McRae names Hampden-Sydney (DIII) Assoc. AD/former Football HC Marty Favret as the new AD. President Lee King: “When we started our national search for a new leader for Bobcat athletics, it was important to me that we find a proven winner, recruiter, and a veteran coach who can develop and mentor our coaching staff. We also sought a leader who can inspire our athletic department to a new peak of excellence and performance. We found that leader in Marty Favret and I am thrilled to welcome him to Lees-McRae." Incoming Valdosta State AD Troy Katen chats with WCTV Alison Posey about expectations and the culture of the Blazers as he steps into the chair next month. On the expectations around VSU, coming from Northwest Missouri State: “When I say this is the destination of a job that this is the top of the mountain, this is one of them. […] Coming into another institution where winning isn’t just only important getting those titles, it’s important for the institution, it’s important for the dynamics of the region, where the institution sits, recruiting, enrollment, that was a big part of it.” More: “We have a footprint nationally, and you have some reputation that you can come in and be a leader right way. Missouri Southern AD Rob Mallory chats about a pair of hot topics – athletic training and communications burnout and NIL – in his Athletic Director in Residence. On the burnout of ATs and communications staff, “the most important thing is to simply be willing to think about the positions and their expectations differently than we have in the past.” For athletic training, MSSU has transitioned away from sport specific trainers and reduced in-person practice coverage for sports with lower injury rates. “That has required cooperation across the conference, and we’re fortunate in the MIAA that our Head Athletic Trainers all came together to put some guidelines and expectations in place for providing care for visiting teams. We are constantly evaluating the effectiveness of these changes for both our athletic trainers and our student-athletes, always going back to that first question.” For communications staff, Mallory emphasizes the ability to provide flexibility through working from home, reduced office hours or collaborating with university staff to ease the load. On NIL, Mallory believes things are going to change quickly in DII due to the elimination of transfer rules and the House settlement which will open revenue sharing at DI. After implementing education, a marketplace and co-branded apparel, next up is tapping into existing partnerships, with “donor-funded NIL if presented appropriately, but we have so many fundraising needs within the department that we have to be careful not to undermine those.” Read the full piece here. NCAA President Charlie Baker has announced the NCAA x Meta NIL Empower Program, a collaboration that will help women maximize their NIL endeavors. Baker made the announcement virtually at the NIL Summit. Participants will have the opportunity to form direct relationships with Meta experts and connect with other student-athletes and industry professionals while receiving exclusive access to various NCAA events. Corporate partner Invesco QQQ will assist the NCAA in building a financial literacy and career development session. Baker: "This is a great opportunity for women college athletes to enhance their personal brand, directly engage with college sports fans and make connections for their future. We are thrilled to support student-athletes, not only as they learn more about how to capitalize on their NIL, but also how they can stay safe online and limit harassment." 100 female student-athletes will be selected for one of two three-month programs. East Stroudsburg will transition its Acrobatics & Tumbling program to STUNT, starting in 2024-25. AD Allen Shook explaining: “Over the past several months we had a chance to re-examine our own sport offerings and the decision was made to move in the direction of STUNT with our acrobatics and tumbling program. This move will allow us to expand our current roster and offer more opportunities for participation for our student-athletes.” (link)

NFL VP/Head of Flag Football Stephanie Kwok talks about raising awareness for flag football ahead of next month’s 280-team NFL Flag Championships July 19-21 in Canton. She tells SBJ’s Ben Fischer: “Flag football is a sport that obviously I personally love. It’s a sport that I wish I had the opportunity to play when I was younger because I loved football. ... So, making sure that anyone who wants to play football has an opportunity to play football, and flag football increases those opportunities, whether it's for girls in the U.S. or for kids internationally as well. For me it's the ability to just scale that.” Kwok also says the NFL sees flag football as a development project first and a revenue-generator second. “It’s about growing that awareness and participation. It’s promising that Toyota is involved and interested, but the primary goal is awareness and participation.” (link)
