+ Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle didn’t mince words when asked by a reporter about a “specific job opening” following the Aggies’ loss in the MCWS last night: “I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask that question, to be honest with you. I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job to never take another job again, and that hasn't changed in my mind. … I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job, and I’ve given this job every single ounce I could possibly give it. Write that.” (link)
+ Tennessee Baseball HC Tony Vitello will get a total of $140K in on-field bonus money this season after winning the MCWS. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports $28K of that is for the Vols' win in the championship series over Texas A&M. Also from Berkowitz: Texas A&M HC Jim Schlossnagle ends the season with $200K in on-field bonuses. (link, link)

South Carolina President Michael Amiridis talks about the future of college athletics post-House and acknowledges that a great deal of uncertainty remains. “Right now, we are trying to divide down the tasks in making sure that the right people get involved to come up with answers.” In regards to roster limits, in football, Amiridis remarks: “At this point, there is no decision that has been made. They have at this point, as you know, they have 85 scholarships. And they have a number of walk-ons. This is the discussion that is very technical. How many do you really need? The coaches have expressed their opinions — I saw the story from coach [Shane] Beamer and he did the right thing. He’s the expert in this area and he’s putting his opinion (out there). The athletic directors are putting their opinions out there. And we’re waiting to see how we can find a compromise.” Amiridis says no one has approached the Gamecocks about a possible private equity investment and adds: “I’ve read the stories about it and, of course, the question is about control. Who controls the situation? What is expected of these private-equity groups? Because they don’t do this for philanthropy. They’re doing this to have a gain, to have some kind of revenue. So quite frankly, at this point, we’re not paying too much attention to it.” On the potential of eliminating sports: “I can tell you that there is a strong desire across the conference to protect Olympic sports, to protect women’s sports. … We have seen these attempts by others in the past and you know exactly what the reaction was and how, immediately, within weeks they reverse the decision. It happens across the country. It happened during COVID as well. That’s not the idea. The idea is not to decrease the number of student-athletes.” Lots more in the full Q&A, including his thoughts on further expanding the SEC. (link)

In remarks at the Capital Tiger Bay Club’s monthly luncheon, Florida State Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins asserted that “at the end of the day, we are worth more than we are getting paid — a lot more than we are getting paid. And I would challenge anybody to tell me that we’re not. To tell me that we’re worth the same amount as some of the other schools in the conference, from a media standpoint.” When asked about FSU’s ongoing legal battle with the ACC, Collins said: “I think our ultimate goal is to get paid for what we’re worth. And I’ll leave it at that. … I’ve seen every media statistic, every measurable fan base statistic, and we’re in the top five [nationally]. I think Florida State should get paid for its name, image and likeness. And we are woefully underpaid.” Furthermore, Collins contended that “by our underpayment, [other ACC schools outside FSU, Clemson and a few others] are getting overpaid.” (link)

Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) has aggregated data across its collective portfolio and other sources to provide a comprehensive look at NIL compensation for DI men’s basketball transfers next season and found that the top 50 players are earning an average of $750K. In subsequent increments of 50 players, the average NIL pay is $432K, $365K, $247K, $153K and $86K, respectively. SANIL Founder Jason Belzer: “Tier 1 programs (P4 + Big East) spent an average of 2x the amount that Tier II and 7x the amount of Tier III & IV programs spent on men’s basketball transfers in 2024. Important to note that Tier I schools also captured 82% of Top 200 ranked players in the portal. If we look only at transfers ranked 201-500, we find that Tier I schools outspent Tier II programs by 2x and Tier III & IV schools by 5x spent on the same pool of student-athletes! Moral: Schools vastly overspend when they have bigger budgets and bid in a vacuum with no data.” (link)

Missouri AD Lard Veatch talks about his experience at Iowa State when, in 2003, former Cyclones Men’s Basketball HC Larry Eustachy was photographed at a party with college students. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff notes that “in the aftermath of Eustachy’s departure, Veatch was quoted by newspapers when Iowa State’s athletics director went quiet,” and Veatch says: “It was hard because I was really young, and I was going into a job that I wasn’t really quite prepared for. ... For a young administrator to be in the middle of that and some other things that went on there was really difficult. … The experience I had at Iowa State made me kind of think, ‘I don’t know if I want to be in the head chair.’” Looking back at it now, Veatch believes he “probably learned more in that year than in any others. … When you go through times where there’s trial or situations that seem unique or really challenging, at that moment, you feel like it’s the only thing going on, it’s never happened to anybody else. But over time, now, having been through college athletics, I look back on that and it was just another step in the process.” Veatch goes on to note the incident has likely informed his approach to the unpredictability of the job. “It used to seem like there was a system or formula to every year. … It’s less and less so. You still have to have your fundamentals in place, and we can’t lose sight of that, right? We’ve got to treat our customers a certain way. We’ve got to provide the right kind of culture and atmosphere for our student-athletes. We’ve got to be professionals in how we operate — all those things. But so much of it changes day to day that it’s really more about strategic thinking and working with a team to process problems.” More. (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello examines the head-to-head TV matchups between the College Football Playoff and the NFL this season and notes there is some precedent. For instance, in 2020, when the pandemic caused conference championship games to be played two weeks after their traditional weekend in December, ACC, SEC and Big Ten's conference championship games faced off against two regular-season games on the NFL Network. “College football trounced the NFL. The ACC Championship between Clemson and Notre Dame pulled 9.92M viewers in prime time, exceeding the highest-rated NFL game (Green Bay vs. Carolina) by more than 4.3M viewers.” Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis tells Marcello: "I'm not surprised that the NFL, probably still remembering that, is of the mind that they're not losing to college football again. I don't think it's a coincidence these games are on NBC and Fox, and not NFL Network." Regarding what would constitute a successful viewership number for the CFP games, Lewis believes an average of 10M for the first round would be a strong start. “You're not going to get playoff-level viewership that we're used to.” (link)

Illinois extends its partnership with Collegiate Sports Connect through which the Illini will continue to enhance talent networking, identification, recruitment, and acquisition processes with access to Connect’s comprehensive professional intercollegiate athletics personnel database, search functionality, and recruitment tools. Illini Asst. AD for Human Resources and Employee Experience Evan Taylor: “At Illinois, we want championship people, who operate with a championship mindset to contribute to our ultimate goal of providing a life changing student-athlete experience. Connect provides a valuable advantage in the recruitment process and enhances the efficiency and quality of talent acquisition. They have been a vital resource for our competitive culture, helping us find personnel with an emphasis on service to students, integrity, and diversity of person, background, and experience.” (link)

The Florida A&M Board of Trustees declined to approve a multi-year contract for new Men’s Basketball HC Patrick Crarey, according to HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who notes the board has tabled the issue until it meets in August. Crarey’s $150K FAMU annual salary was reportedly a sticking point, as FAMU trustee Deveron Gibbons said there was not enough information regarding whether Crarey would be tripling his salary. According to Gaither, Sykes pulled up the employment verification on Crarey, and stated he made $95K at St. Thomas (NAIA). Meanwhile, Gaither notes the “holdup for Crarey’s contract comes as a report from RattlerNation, a FAMU blog, posted a letter accusing Crarey of ‘kicking off 95% of the remaining players he inherited from previous head coach Robert McCullum. The letter was sent by Julius McAllister, senior minister of Bethel AME Church for nearly 16 years. His son, Colin, is a walk-on and one of the 16 student-athletes his father claims was dismissed.” An email obtained by Gaither that was sent to four student-athletes, including McAllister, stated that walk-ons would not be a part of the men’s basketball summer workouts and that the team, once composed of 13 scholarship players and six walk-ons, would be limited to 16 players, three of whom would be walk-ons. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin reiterates his opposition to the transfer portal in its current form, telling The Athletic’s Seth Emerson: “That’s how bad I’m telling you this is. The current system probably benefits us as much as any school in America. And I’m telling you it’s a horrible system, so what does that tell you?” Kiffin goes on to remark that “with everything that has a benefit, there’s a cost. It’s been a lot of great stuff for the players getting paid, which is long overdue, but I don’t know that in the best interest of 17- to 21-year-olds it’s in the best interest long-term to always know: ‘I can leave at any point. Mentally, I can check out into the next window at any point, no matter how many times I’ve gone. I don’t have to stay. I don’t have to practice through adversity if I don’t like what the coach said to me or where I am on a depth chart. … If any professional sport — now you’re going to get me started on this — if any professional sport had two times a year, let alone one, that they could go into free agency, what would the sport look like?” Also from Kiffin: ”I should be sitting here saying don’t change anything. But it’s really not good. Maybe when I was younger I wouldn’t say a word, because I’d be like, ‘This is great, selfishly, for where I’m at.’ But it’s not at all for the big picture of college football or the student-athletes.” (link)

UCLA Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin has a simple explanation for the Bruins’ success in the transfer portal this offseason: “Our NIL grew exponentially. All you have to do is look at our recruiting class this year versus last year.” As far as how the Bruins’ NIL war chest stacks up against other programs, Cronin remarks: “It’s tough to say because the way things are now, you don’t know. You only can guess because say I beat you for a recruit, you’re going to tell everybody, ‘Oh, he gave him $1M.’ It used to be, ‘Oh, they cheated.’ Now it’s, ‘Well, they gave him $1M. They gave him $1.5M.’ Well, I can tell you, nobody [on the team] got $1M. But you just don’t know [how you stack up against other teams] because it’s not pro sports, the books aren’t open, the contracts aren’t public. So nobody knows. In fact, most of the collectives have confidentiality agreements in their contracts, so the contract can be voided if you tell people what you got.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker has announced the NCAA x Meta NIL Empower Program, a collaboration that will help women maximize their NIL endeavors. Baker made the announcement virtually at the NIL Summit. Participants will have the opportunity to form direct relationships with Meta experts and connect with other student-athletes and industry professionals while receiving exclusive access to various NCAA events. Corporate partner Invesco QQQ will assist the NCAA in building a financial literacy and career development session. Baker: "This is a great opportunity for women college athletes to enhance their personal brand, directly engage with college sports fans and make connections for their future. We are thrilled to support student-athletes, not only as they learn more about how to capitalize on their NIL, but also how they can stay safe online and limit harassment." 100 female student-athletes will be selected for one of two three-month programs. Each program consists of one virtual session per month. (link)

More from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s remarks at the NIL Summit, where he called for a federal solution on Title IX’s application to the House settlement. "This is a really hard question for schools to answer on their own for a whole bunch of reasons. The biggest one most schools have said to us is…the rules around equity when it comes to Title IX and around men's and women's sports ought to be relatively consistent from school to school and conference to conference. That's going to require a national standard. If we create a national standard at the NCAA, the problem with that would be if anybody doesn't like it one way or the other…it would be challengeable in court.” CBS’ John Talty observes that both a 50/50 revenue-share split among male and female student-athletes and a market-based split come with potential legal challenges. “If, for instance, a school splits the $22M evenly amongst men and women athletes, it could prompt football players to sue if they aren't receiving enough compensation relative to the revenue they generate for the schools. Expect a conference-level push for uniformity among members if there isn't a federal answer. It's not difficult to envision the potential issues if one Big Ten school is spending 80% of that $22M on football while another is only doing 50%.” (link)

“NCAA Division I has never been more fractured, fragile and frustrated,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who cites NCAA President Charlie Baker’s meeting with Power 4 commissioners. “Not in the room: the other 28 Division I commissioners who milled about on the first floor of the [Ritz-Carlton] resort wondering the whereabouts of the other four.” One commissioner told Dellenger: “I didn’t even know they were meeting.” Another whispered: “Of course, they are cutting us out of it.” While the industry prepares for a new post-House governance framework, one FCS commissioner says the model, though not complete, can be summed up in five words: “Let the big dogs eat.” Dellenger: “The fighting over back pay aside, in meetings this week, commissioners of the Other 28 expressed agreement in granting the major conferences rule-making powers, such as the creation of their own power conference-only committees.” Still, leaders in the Other 28 worry their access to NCAA championships will continue to shrink until it’s gone, and Dellenger explains: “The chief worry is over the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which is the association and Other 28’s primary source of revenue and the one event that truly binds all Division I institutions. While football cash keeps afloat the power leagues, March Madness is the financial lifeblood for the Other 28 as well as their national relevance.” Another concern involves roster limits in football, as Dellenger observes: “No decisions were made, but [Baker and the P4 commissioners] inched closer to a football roster limit that will likely be more than than 85 but less than the traditional 120 players that teams now carry. Not in that meeting, of course, were the Other 28.” (link)

On-field sponsorships could net athletic departments $2M to $6M annually, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who adds that “major Power 4 college football programs could see sponsorship deals north of $8M to $10M annually.” Learfield President/CEO Cole Gahagan: “If we use stadium naming rights as a proxy for this next horizon of opportunities for our schools, what the data tells us is that in the majority of cases, those are local or regional brands that want to be a part of these big-time sponsorships. If you zoom out and look at the total landscape of naming rights in college sports, typically those are regional, if not local brands, to Ames, Iowa, or Lubbock, Texas, or Gainesville, Florida, or Eugene, Oregon. If we go off of precedent and the data that we have, my guess, is the bulk of these on-field sponsorships will be local or regional brands.” ADs and multimedia rights holders are also discussing the potential of selling on-field sponsorships on a game-by-game basis, and SMU AD Rick Hart explains: “What I’m learning and talking to people about to learn more is it something that you just go sell to a sponsor for the season? Or is there a way to dynamically price that inventory so that on a game-by-game basis, depending on the network and the reach, it varies from game-to-game relative to the value of that inventory?” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione continues to campaign for a proposed $1B entertainment district in Norman and tells The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley: “We're undeterred. We're very excited and passionate about it because we believe it's good for the city of Norman and Cleveland County. It often gets discussed without connecting the two pieces. It's the synergy of both, the new arena and the entertainment district.” The Norman City Council has approved a special election for residents to vote on the tax increment financing (TIF) districts for the proposed district, but Sulley notes the results of the vote aren’t legally binding and voters could request a referendum petition challenging the decision. Castiglione: “We know there's been a necessary process in place. We followed it to the tee every step of the way. We’ve provided forums, we've been part of one on one conversations, we're going anywhere and everywhere where people want to talk about it and try to make sure that they have all the available information necessary so they can make great decisions. … Ultimately, it's something that needs to happen in Norman, now. Because it really creates another high level of improvement in a transformative way that goes right with our move to the SEC, which we've called it many times a transformative opportunity.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft is open to selling the naming rights to Beaver Stadium but says as things stand now, fans won’t see on-field ads in any of PSU’s NCAA-allowable three venues this season. “When you ask where it’s at. It’s not that it’s nowhere, I think the option is on the table. Everything is up there, right? [But] we just don’t slap logos anywhere. It’s not done that way. It’s a thoughtful process. And how is that helping us in a revenue area — but no, let me just tell you as I sit here on June 24, you won’t see any of that this year, but I’m not going to take it off the table. I don’t think anybody can take anything like that off the table in the world we’re living in.” As far as what the Nittany Lions could bring in for naming rights to Beaver Stadium, StateCollege.com’s Ben Jones points out that “for in-state comparison, in 2003, Citizens Bank inked a 20-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies worth $93M for the naming rights to the Phillies’ home stadium, while Acrisure signed a 15-year deal worth a reported $150M for the naming rights to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ stadium in 2022.” (link)

Northwestern has broken ground on the Ryan Field redevelopment. The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna reports the “new stadium will be one of the most accessible stadiums in college football and achieve LEED Gold-Certified standards for sustainability. The new stadium will include a community park and year-round public greenspaces.” Have a look at the new renderings. (link)

Waiola Development Partners has dropped its bid for the Aloha Stadium redevelopment project, leaving only Aloha Halawa District Partners (AHDP) in the running for the right to construct a 25,000-seat stadium as part of a mixed-use district that would include housing and retail, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick. The AHDP group includes The Cordish Company (one of the equity partners), Populous (one of the designers), and AECOM Hunt (as the builder). McCormick notes the “New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District (NASED) master developer was supposed to be selected this fall, with a contract hopefully agreed by next summer. The state’s RFP, posted late last year, was arranged to handle a scenario in which only one group submitted a bid, but it clearly diminishes the state’s bargaining power in an overall effort that has struggled during the last four years to accrue momentum due to political setbacks and the complexities of a project in Hawaii.” (link)

The DI Council this week will vote on a legislative proposal that would expand the role of football support staff to allow all staff members to provide technical and tactical instruction to student-athletes during practice and games. On3’s Pete Nakos: “In the college football world, the expectation is the vote will pass. But some are holding their breath after the council initially rejected the move in the spring of 2023. The move would remove the current rules that allow just 11 coaches (head coach and 10 assistants) to instruct athletes.” The proposal would keep the number of off-campus recruiters to 11, including head coaches. FCS would be able to have 12 ACs recruit off-campus, while FBS HCs could designate any 10 staffers as countable coaches who can recruit off campus. (link)

The Big East is set to announce new six-year media rights deals with Fox, NBC and TNT that will begin with the 2025-26 season and run through 2030-31. According to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy and Austin Karp, “financial terms were still being finalized at presstime, but sources noted the conference will see a significant rights fee uptick. … Fox will continue as the lead ‘A’ network in the new deal, as it had when it initially signed on with the Big East prior to the 2013-14 school year. Sources tell SBJ the rankings for selections of games have already been decided among the conference’s new media partners. CBS, which had long been a Big East partner, will not return with the conference, as the sides were not able to carve out a smaller fourth package of rights, per sources.” (link)

Texas will rebrand Longhorn Network as a free streaming platform that houses original content, live coaches shows, historic footage, play-by-play radio audio and live football statcasts, among other features. Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte: “About 40% of people get their content through streaming. Having that available and having shoulder programming around all of our games, the ability to show coaches shows, replays, everything that’s within the new, exciting move to the SEC, putting that on a streaming platform was just something we really felt passionate about.” SBJ’s Ben Portnoy notes Endeavor Streaming “presented a baseline operating platform in which a new-look LHN could run. Learfield Studios, meanwhile, will help staff the venture with four full-time employees that will work in conjunction with Texas’ in-house creative team to develop branded content for Longhorn fans. Learfield will also handle advertising and sponsorship sales.” Learfield President/CEO Cole Gahagan: “Longhorn Network certainly stands on its own in terms of its brand equity and its history. But the framework of what we're building there – a constant flow of unique content to fans, that often includes student-athletes and is branded with the participation of brand partners – that's the multimedia rights model of the future.” The service launches on July 1.
