Washington State removes the interim tag from AD Anne McCoy, who previously served as Senior Deputy AD/SWA. President Kirk Schulz: “Anne's experience within college athletics, her reputation among her peers, and most importantly, her passion and commitment to WSU, make her the perfect fit to move Cougar Athletics forward as our next director of athletics. Her accomplishments over the past months, and throughout her more than two decades as a college administrator, reflect on her leadership, vision, and ability to unite Coug Nation. We are fortunate to have Anne leading Cougar Athletics.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White reached his bonus cap of $300K with the Vols’ winning the Men’s College World Series. White entered the final game of the MCWS with $266,805 in bonuses already earned and finished the game having tallied $533,610 in bonuses per the terms of his contract, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks, who adds: “That included $72,765 for a team national championship, or 3% of his annual base salary. And it also included $194,040, or 8% of his base salary, for UT finishing in the top 10 of the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.” Full breakdown of White’s bonuses this year. (link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan insists the Dukes’ “everything school” philosophy will continue despite the upheaval within the industry. “Things are going to change. There’s no doubt about that. It’s not lost on me as we talk about this notion of the ‘everything school,’ you’re not an everything school if you’re focused on the top three [of football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball]. We want to focus on giving all 18 sports that we currently sponsor every resource it needs to be successful so we are living up to that standard.” Roan goes on to note that “NIL and Title IX implications of NIL and revenue sharing, the big ticket items are what we are discussing in those rooms. It’s reassuring that we are led by a forward-looking visionary commissioner, and it’s great that we are in the position at JMU to lead in some of those talks. We’re committed to trying to excel and raise the bar.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown adds to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger’s reporting that several non-Power 4 commissioners are being isolated from discussions about a new governance model: “I had spoken to a few conference commissioners from low-major type leagues that were strongly considering skipping the Florida commissioners meeting entirely, in large part out of deep frustration over how they feel they’ve been treated during the House settlement negotiations. If those folks already thought the NCAA was a P4 world (until it’s time to pay a massive legal bill, anyway), well, those governance meetings weren’t likely to change any minds.” While not every league is facing the 10% budget cuts that Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill spoke of, Brown notes the “consensus from conference officials I’ve spoken to in June is that every conference is going to do everything they can to keep budget cuts away from directly impacting the general college athlete experience. That means stuff like staff professional development budgets, SAAC off-site meetings and back office staff are likely to face cuts first. Then, leagues could potentially revisit how they spend money on championship events and travel.” One AD tells Brown: “Nobody is going to drop any sports because of this, unless they already wanted to drop them and are just looking for an excuse.” Another non-P4 AD, when asked whether his school will opt into revenue-sharing, responded: “F*** no. C’mon, you’ve FOIA’d my budget. We don’t earn $21M in revenue. How the hell am I supposed to share $21M with athletes?” More from Brown on how non-P4 schools are preparing for a post-House world, including the concept of “tiering” sports. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann examines Houston Christian’s motion to intervene in the House settlement and believes U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken is likely to contemplate whether “most schools impacted by the settlement were not only denied a seat at the table but also saw their interests traded away to plaintiffs’ lawyers to secure a deal. … HCU, which says 95% of its students are on financial aid, contends the defendants don’t represent its interests at the bargaining table. The school also grumbles that colleges were presented with the settlement ‘as a fait accompli, without any regard to the adverse impact to these institutions.’” In its motion, HCU argues the settlement would force university leadership to violate their fiduciary obligations under the law by causing the “diversion of funds away from the basic academic mission of HCU and other similarly situated institutions at the expense of the core educational functions of educating students and conducting research.” The NCAA, McCann continues, could counter by pointing out that all DI schools “who vote on NCAA rules are responsible for amateurism rules that led to the lawsuits. HCU was part of the NCAA when the allegedly illegal conduct transpired.” If Wilken does approve the settlement, McCann notes numerous stakeholders could claim standing to appeal. “Last Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit reversed and vacated a settlement agreement involving Johnson & Johnson sunscreen products that a U.S. district court judge had approved…[illustrating] how settlements lack finality until they pass multiple checkpoints.” (link)

UCF has received a $10M commitment from alumnus Kenneth Dixon, $5M of which will support the enhancement of the Kenneth G. Dixon Athletics Village, the portion of campus dedicated to athletic competition as well as the health and well-being, academic services and professional development of Knights’ student-athletes. The gift will also support key initiatives aimed at maintaining competitive excellence as UCF grows in the Big 12. (link)

Badger Extra’s Colten Bartholomew examines Wisconsin’s NIL infrastructure, which is led by Director of NIL Strategy Brian Mason with support from Altius Sports Partners NIL Marketing Manager Paige Sadoff and NIL Partner Services Manager Tyler Britz. Mason notes the athletic department staff can’t act as agents for student-athletes, “but we are trying to help our athletes that are interested in being in the space to connect with brands where they align in a natural way. I would say that is the No. 1 development we’ve seen in the NIL space over the last three years is that businesses and brands really, for the most part, are looking for athletes that align with them and in a specific way.” To that end, Britz and Sadoff will be involved in curating lists of athletes for businesses that are interested, and Badgers AD Chris McIntosh says: “I think we're at a good point right now, especially given the partnerships we have through Altius and Badger Sports Properties. I don’t think it's a headcount issue. We've got the right people in place now.” Bartholomew posits that collectives will continue to be important moving forward, and McIntosh adds: “The times we're living in present day, the collective carries a lot of value to it. This is a way to just kind of supplement the overall NIL offering that we provide, but the Varsity Collective remains very important to us.” (link)

+ Tennessee Baseball HC Tony Vitello picks up a $140K bonus for leading the Vols to the national title. The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Mike Wilson notes Vitello is eligible for just one bonus per year based on the highest achievement of the team, which this year was winning the CWS. He did not receive a bonus for winning the SEC regular-season title or SEC tournament title. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher is told that $65M of the $255M war chest Washington State and Oregon State received via their Pac-12 settlement “has been earmarked to help with the Pac-12 rebuild to eight members. That leaves approximately $190M (or $95M each) for OSU and WSU to subsidize their athletic department programs in the next few years. It’s why the two schools keep publicly insisting they’ll continue to fund and operate like they’re ‘Power 5’ members. They have the resources to help do that for at least two or three years. It drives me nuts when people write ‘Oregon State and Washington State should just give up and join the Mountain West.’ That would be a dumb move. It would not only mean accepting relegation, but also, giving settlement money back.” Canzano points out that “if they simply disband the Pac-12, some of the settlement money would revert to schools that left for other conferences.” (link)

Parity is slowly declining in men’s golf, according to Perfect Putt’s Jared Doerfler, who points out this year’s men's golf national championship featured four mid-major schools, the lowest number in the last five championships and down from 10 in 2021. While spending isn’t the only reason high-majors are pulling away, it is a factor, as Doerfler notes the eight teams that advanced to match play in this year’s championship all have “state-of-the-art practice facilities, and seven have invested over $5M in them.” Because golf programs are historically a relatively small line item on athletic department budgets, most golf facilities are paid for via donors, and Doerfler notes: “So why are donors investing millions into golf as a non-revenue-generating sport? I’m not sure anyone has an answer other than alumni wanting to see their schools compete for conference and national championships. The bottom line is fairly clear: To compete in college golf, millions of dollars will be required. Some schools have a head start, and some are better positioned with climate. But it isn’t too late to start investing — it will only get more competitive.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education is committed to ensuring this year’s FAFSA forms are ready promptly by October 1, asserting in a statement last week that “we have heard from students, families, institutions, states, and those that support them that it is important for the 2025-26 FAFSA form to launch on October 1. The Department has made significant progress to address and resolve all major known issues with the 2024-25 form and will continue to make improvements to the form to enable a better user experience.” Some administrators remain skeptical, including Saint Louis VP for Enrollment Management Rob Reddy, who says: “Between [Federal Student Aid COO Richard Cordray’s] departure and the instability and uncertainty that comes with an election year…all of this leads me to believe there will be a delay. If I don’t prepare for that eventuality, I’d be derelict in my job.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes there are reasons for optimism, however, citing the appointment of College Board President Jeremy Singer to oversee the next rollout and the elimination of a 90-day window for feedback. NASFAA Director of Policy Analysis Jill Desjean: “I’d say this increases the likelihood they’ll meet the Oct. 1 launch date, but it comes at the cost of not making changes for next year. Given the magnitude of the changes from this year, I think people would have appreciated the time to comment.” (link)

+ Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle didn’t mince words when asked by a reporter about a “specific job opening” following the Aggies’ loss in the MCWS last night: “I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask that question, to be honest with you. I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job to never take another job again, and that hasn't changed in my mind. … I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job, and I’ve given this job every single ounce I could possibly give it. Write that.” (link)
+ Tennessee Baseball HC Tony Vitello will get a total of $140K in on-field bonus money this season after winning the MCWS. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports $28K of that is for the Vols' win in the championship series over Texas A&M. Also from Berkowitz: Texas A&M HC Jim Schlossnagle ends the season with $200K in on-field bonuses. (link, link)

South Carolina President Michael Amiridis talks about the future of college athletics post-House and acknowledges that a great deal of uncertainty remains. “Right now, we are trying to divide down the tasks in making sure that the right people get involved to come up with answers.” In regards to roster limits, in football, Amiridis remarks: “At this point, there is no decision that has been made. They have at this point, as you know, they have 85 scholarships. And they have a number of walk-ons. This is the discussion that is very technical. How many do you really need? The coaches have expressed their opinions — I saw the story from coach [Shane] Beamer and he did the right thing. He’s the expert in this area and he’s putting his opinion (out there). The athletic directors are putting their opinions out there. And we’re waiting to see how we can find a compromise.” Amiridis says no one has approached the Gamecocks about a possible private equity investment and adds: “I’ve read the stories about it and, of course, the question is about control. Who controls the situation? What is expected of these private-equity groups? Because they don’t do this for philanthropy. They’re doing this to have a gain, to have some kind of revenue. So quite frankly, at this point, we’re not paying too much attention to it.” On the potential of eliminating sports: “I can tell you that there is a strong desire across the conference to protect Olympic sports, to protect women’s sports. … We have seen these attempts by others in the past and you know exactly what the reaction was and how, immediately, within weeks they reverse the decision. It happens across the country. It happened during COVID as well. That’s not the idea. The idea is not to decrease the number of student-athletes.” Lots more in the full Q&A, including his thoughts on further expanding the SEC. (link)

In remarks at the Capital Tiger Bay Club’s monthly luncheon, Florida State Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins asserted that “at the end of the day, we are worth more than we are getting paid — a lot more than we are getting paid. And I would challenge anybody to tell me that we’re not. To tell me that we’re worth the same amount as some of the other schools in the conference, from a media standpoint.” When asked about FSU’s ongoing legal battle with the ACC, Collins said: “I think our ultimate goal is to get paid for what we’re worth. And I’ll leave it at that. … I’ve seen every media statistic, every measurable fan base statistic, and we’re in the top five [nationally]. I think Florida State should get paid for its name, image and likeness. And we are woefully underpaid.” Furthermore, Collins contended that “by our underpayment, [other ACC schools outside FSU, Clemson and a few others] are getting overpaid.” (link)

Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) has aggregated data across its collective portfolio and other sources to provide a comprehensive look at NIL compensation for DI men’s basketball transfers next season and found that the top 50 players are earning an average of $750K. In subsequent increments of 50 players, the average NIL pay is $432K, $365K, $247K, $153K and $86K, respectively. SANIL Founder Jason Belzer: “Tier 1 programs (P4 + Big East) spent an average of 2x the amount that Tier II and 7x the amount of Tier III & IV programs spent on men’s basketball transfers in 2024. Important to note that Tier I schools also captured 82% of Top 200 ranked players in the portal. If we look only at transfers ranked 201-500, we find that Tier I schools outspent Tier II programs by 2x and Tier III & IV schools by 5x spent on the same pool of student-athletes! Moral: Schools vastly overspend when they have bigger budgets and bid in a vacuum with no data.” (link)

Missouri AD Lard Veatch talks about his experience at Iowa State when, in 2003, former Cyclones Men’s Basketball HC Larry Eustachy was photographed at a party with college students. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff notes that “in the aftermath of Eustachy’s departure, Veatch was quoted by newspapers when Iowa State’s athletics director went quiet,” and Veatch says: “It was hard because I was really young, and I was going into a job that I wasn’t really quite prepared for. ... For a young administrator to be in the middle of that and some other things that went on there was really difficult. … The experience I had at Iowa State made me kind of think, ‘I don’t know if I want to be in the head chair.’” Looking back at it now, Veatch believes he “probably learned more in that year than in any others. … When you go through times where there’s trial or situations that seem unique or really challenging, at that moment, you feel like it’s the only thing going on, it’s never happened to anybody else. But over time, now, having been through college athletics, I look back on that and it was just another step in the process.” Veatch goes on to note the incident has likely informed his approach to the unpredictability of the job. “It used to seem like there was a system or formula to every year. … It’s less and less so. You still have to have your fundamentals in place, and we can’t lose sight of that, right? We’ve got to treat our customers a certain way. We’ve got to provide the right kind of culture and atmosphere for our student-athletes. We’ve got to be professionals in how we operate — all those things. But so much of it changes day to day that it’s really more about strategic thinking and working with a team to process problems.” More. (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello examines the head-to-head TV matchups between the College Football Playoff and the NFL this season and notes there is some precedent. For instance, in 2020, when the pandemic caused conference championship games to be played two weeks after their traditional weekend in December, ACC, SEC and Big Ten's conference championship games faced off against two regular-season games on the NFL Network. “College football trounced the NFL. The ACC Championship between Clemson and Notre Dame pulled 9.92M viewers in prime time, exceeding the highest-rated NFL game (Green Bay vs. Carolina) by more than 4.3M viewers.” Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis tells Marcello: "I'm not surprised that the NFL, probably still remembering that, is of the mind that they're not losing to college football again. I don't think it's a coincidence these games are on NBC and Fox, and not NFL Network." Regarding what would constitute a successful viewership number for the CFP games, Lewis believes an average of 10M for the first round would be a strong start. “You're not going to get playoff-level viewership that we're used to.” (link)

Illinois extends its partnership with Collegiate Sports Connect through which the Illini will continue to enhance talent networking, identification, recruitment, and acquisition processes with access to Connect’s comprehensive professional intercollegiate athletics personnel database, search functionality, and recruitment tools. Illini Asst. AD for Human Resources and Employee Experience Evan Taylor: “At Illinois, we want championship people, who operate with a championship mindset to contribute to our ultimate goal of providing a life changing student-athlete experience. Connect provides a valuable advantage in the recruitment process and enhances the efficiency and quality of talent acquisition. They have been a vital resource for our competitive culture, helping us find personnel with an emphasis on service to students, integrity, and diversity of person, background, and experience.” (link)

The Florida A&M Board of Trustees declined to approve a multi-year contract for new Men’s Basketball HC Patrick Crarey, according to HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who notes the board has tabled the issue until it meets in August. Crarey’s $150K FAMU annual salary was reportedly a sticking point, as FAMU trustee Deveron Gibbons said there was not enough information regarding whether Crarey would be tripling his salary. According to Gaither, Sykes pulled up the employment verification on Crarey, and stated he made $95K at St. Thomas (NAIA). Meanwhile, Gaither notes the “holdup for Crarey’s contract comes as a report from RattlerNation, a FAMU blog, posted a letter accusing Crarey of ‘kicking off 95% of the remaining players he inherited from previous head coach Robert McCullum. The letter was sent by Julius McAllister, senior minister of Bethel AME Church for nearly 16 years. His son, Colin, is a walk-on and one of the 16 student-athletes his father claims was dismissed.” An email obtained by Gaither that was sent to four student-athletes, including McAllister, stated that walk-ons would not be a part of the men’s basketball summer workouts and that the team, once composed of 13 scholarship players and six walk-ons, would be limited to 16 players, three of whom would be walk-ons. Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin reiterates his opposition to the transfer portal in its current form, telling The Athletic’s Seth Emerson: “That’s how bad I’m telling you this is. The current system probably benefits us as much as any school in America. And I’m telling you it’s a horrible system, so what does that tell you?” Kiffin goes on to remark that “with everything that has a benefit, there’s a cost. It’s been a lot of great stuff for the players getting paid, which is long overdue, but I don’t know that in the best interest of 17- to 21-year-olds it’s in the best interest long-term to always know: ‘I can leave at any point. Mentally, I can check out into the next window at any point, no matter how many times I’ve gone. I don’t have to stay. I don’t have to practice through adversity if I don’t like what the coach said to me or where I am on a depth chart. … If any professional sport — now you’re going to get me started on this — if any professional sport had two times a year, let alone one, that they could go into free agency, what would the sport look like?” Also from Kiffin: ”I should be sitting here saying don’t change anything. But it’s really not good. Maybe when I was younger I wouldn’t say a word, because I’d be like, ‘This is great, selfishly, for where I’m at.’ But it’s not at all for the big picture of college football or the student-athletes.” (link)

UCLA Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin has a simple explanation for the Bruins’ success in the transfer portal this offseason: “Our NIL grew exponentially. All you have to do is look at our recruiting class this year versus last year.” As far as how the Bruins’ NIL war chest stacks up against other programs, Cronin remarks: “It’s tough to say because the way things are now, you don’t know. You only can guess because say I beat you for a recruit, you’re going to tell everybody, ‘Oh, he gave him $1M.’ It used to be, ‘Oh, they cheated.’ Now it’s, ‘Well, they gave him $1M. They gave him $1.5M.’ Well, I can tell you, nobody [on the team] got $1M. But you just don’t know [how you stack up against other teams] because it’s not pro sports, the books aren’t open, the contracts aren’t public. So nobody knows. In fact, most of the collectives have confidentiality agreements in their contracts, so the contract can be voided if you tell people what you got.” (link)
