Bacone has filed for bankruptcy and has no plans to close, with Interim President Leslie Hannah telling Inside Higher Ed the institution will take next year off with the hope of finding a partner to acquire or merge with the college. The filing, per Hannah, was a strategic move to save the physical campus, which was nearly auctioned off last year. BC owes its outstanding nearly $2M. (link)

IU South Bend removes the interim tag from AD/Men’s Basketball HC Scott Cooper, who has been leading the Titans since August 2023. Executive Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement Kory Vitangeli: “Scott’s background and experience make him well positioned to lead the athletic department, and he has demonstrated a commitment to the program and to students in achieving success, both as students and athletes.” (link)

GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra sits down with Midwest Sports Net’s Joey McWilliams to discuss the league’s identity and changes to membership and sport sponsorship. The beginning of membership conversations started with Waldorf transitioning back to a faith-based institution from a for-profit one, in conjunction with the North Star losing some members, quickly followed by Jamestown’s decision to jump to NCAA DII. Westra hopes the new north central Iowa market with Waldorf will bring added league exposure in Minnesota. The Jimmies’ exit led to Dordt and Morningside moving their Men’s Volleyball programs to the Heart of America. On the league’s faith-based identity: “We are a faith-based league and we have been since our origins. It's important to us. We feel like the mission behind our schools is as important as the games on the court or on the field. […] I think it's been a really good thing for our league and it's a tenant that we've stuck to. It puts us in a little bit of a box, I'll be honest with you, in terms of geography. There's not an infinite amount of faith-based Institutions. Waldorf coming into our league this year, certainly coming back from being a for-profit did meet that, going more back to their Lutheran Foundation. It's been good for us and I think that common goal and common mission has served us very, very well. (link)

Incoming NAIA member Defiance AD Tiffani Selhorst chats with The Crescent-News’ Shayne Nissen about the Yellow Jackets’ transition from NCAA DIII to NAIA. On the internal focus heading into 2024-25: “Everybody is rowing in the same direction right now. It’s going to be really important that we can gel and start working on the culture of the old and new coming together, and I think every coach that we have is up to the challenge. […] We are doing a lot of training with our coaches to make sure that we’re following the NAIA rules with how to recruit. The NAIA is similar to the NCAA but there are definitely different rules and making sure we are teaching coaches how to offer scholarships in an efficient way because they only have so much scholarship money they can play with.” Asked about the change in competition, Selhorst: “I hope that everyone understands that we are also going into one of the toughest conferences for every sport, not just football. We are going to have some growing pains, but we know it’s coming. We talk about being resilient all the time and I feel very positive about the staff and what they want to accomplish this year.” (link)

Ottawa (KS) hires Texas College Men’s Basketball HC Matt Cross for the same role with the Braves. AD Janet Eaton-Smith: “Matt is a proven winner in men's basketball and is well respected by his peers. He brings a 'can do' attitude to the department and will immediately elevate the program. Matt's knowledge of the game will help grow the basketball IQ of our student-athletes. The U.S. Department of Education is committed to ensuring this year’s FAFSA forms are ready promptly by October 1, asserting in a statement last week that “we have heard from students, families, institutions, states, and those that support them that it is important for the 2025-26 FAFSA form to launch on October 1. The Department has made significant progress to address and resolve all major known issues with the 2024-25 form and will continue to make improvements to the form to enable a better user experience.” Some administrators remain skeptical, including Saint Louis (NCAA DI) VP for Enrollment Management Rob Reddy, who says: “Between [Federal Student Aid COO Richard Cordray’s] departure and the instability and uncertainty that comes with an election year…all of this leads me to believe there will be a delay. If I don’t prepare for that eventuality, I’d be derelict in my job.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes there are reasons for optimism, however, citing the appointment of College Board President Jeremy Singer to oversee the next rollout and the elimination of a 90-day window for feedback. NASFAA Director of Policy Analysis Jill Desjean: “I’d say this increases the likelihood they’ll meet the Oct. 1 launch date, but it comes at the cost of not making changes for next year. Given the magnitude of the changes from this year, I think people would have appreciated the time to comment.” (link)
