Utah State announces a new $125M fundraising campaign for Aggie athletics — the ‘Reach and Rise’ Fundraising Campaign — which is USU’s first-ever comprehensive capital campaign and the largest and most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of the university. USU hopes to raise the money over the next five years, with $20M already raised thanks to a pair of anonymous $10M donations. Aggies AD Diana Sabau: “If we don’t take this moment right now, if we don’t invest in our ‘Reach and Rise’ campaign, Utah State athletics will not be able to keep up with the changing times, with where intercollegiate athletics is going. We are already behind with most of our peers in the Mountain West. When you look at Utah State and the number of investors, contributors and donors to our athletic department, we are second from the bottom in the MWC with number of contributors. We must grow that base.” The official purpose behind the campaign is three-fold: 1) To redefine the student-athlete experience by providing tools for success beyond their athletic careers; 2) To raise the standard of excellence with a renewed commitment to increase funding for recruiting and retaining student-athletes and staff, along with facility enhancements; and 3) To change lives through education by funding student-athlete scholarships. Colorado State AD John Weber talks revenue opportunities, including the potential of the entire Rams department having a presenting sponsor: “We’ve got to be aggressive from that perspective. And I’ve talked to a lot of people over the last couple of months as well about us being very innovative … we’re going to have to think very differently. We’re going to have to find streams of revenue that haven’t existed here before. We’re sitting in a building right now that’s connected to Moby Arena that’s not named. We’ve got soccer and softball complexes out here that aren’t named. So there are some very obvious opportunities, along those lines, along with some of the changes that you’re talking about — on-field, to players and jerseys, doing more from a brand sponsorship perspective.” (link)

Notable news in the Dartmouth-NLRB case as the sports council of the AFL-CIO - which includes a number of professional sports players associations - filed an amicus brief supporting the Big Green student-athletes attempting to be declared employees. Sportico’s Michael McCann: “First, they stress college sports has become an enormous business that prioritizes making money and financially enriches numerous stakeholders, but not the labor. [...] Second, the unions insist that because their college counterparts are performing the same basic ‘work,’ it ‘should be no surprise’ that Dartmouth players want to bargain over employment issues. [...] Third, the unions assert that fears of employment and unions destroying college sports run counter to the role played by unions in pro sports. By bargaining terms of employment with unions, pro leagues and owners gain an exemption from antitrust scrutiny—which has dramatically reduced legal controversies in leagues and promoted labor stability valued by fans and business partners.” More. More from Hawaii AD Craig Angelos on his first year on the islands: “What do we want our program to look like at the University of Hawaii? What do the people want it to be? It’s not my program, it’s the people’s program of Hawaii. We’re kind of at a crossroads where there’s more and more separation, conference realignment that’s still out there. We’ve got House settlement, we’ve got the NIL collectives, transfer portal and all that, it needs to be funded the right way. There’s a lot of discussion. I always stress that in the midst of this chaos, more so than in my 30 years of being in college athletics, the game is still the same. The team element, the student-athlete experience is still the same. [...] I think NIL is here to stay. Even when it was illegal 10, 20, 30 years ago, what people went on probation for, there was still an appetite for people to contribute there. Now it’s all legal, so there’s still gonna be an appetite for donors and boosters. The revenue share should be interesting to see. That’s 22% of your revenues that you’re gonna have to share. Who is going to audit that to make sure the student-athletes are still collecting their full 22%? That’s going to be a little bit of a quagmire, too. There’s a lot of details to be worked out. I just think it is a long time coming. [...] Trying to get our presence and our brand more into Asia and Japan especially, but also Taiwan, Korea. I’ve made three trips out to Japan this year. We’re trying to expand our reach and our brand out there. What I think it does is it helps our licensing. We can sell product over there and be Japan’s college team. I know UCLA has a big presence, a few marketing offices over there. It would really help us with our merchandise sales and our brand. I think it helps us with our recruiting for other sports, too.” (link)

USC Deputy AD for External/Chief of Staff Jay Hilbrands sits down with Collegiate Sports Associates’ Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention to reflect on his career journey, which began as a DIII football student-athlete and communications intern and includes a five-year stop at Washington. Hilbrands shares insight into serving as a football sport administrator, offers his best advice for networking and relationship-building and discusses the value of self-talk and consistency. Hilbrands explains that “a big thing in my career is being consistent, being the same each and every day and showing up and being that person that everyone can count on,” and he also advises: “Don’t get caught up in and all the craziness and and titles and how fast are you climbing or achieving this. Just show up, be your best self, be consistent, treat people the right way and be kind. I feel like those are good things to live by regardless, and I would tell myself that starting over as an internet at Bethel (DIII).” (link)

The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen writes on Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois’ move to bring its multimedia rights in-house: “This is the old ‘burn the place down and build it up again’ managerial strategy, which, to her credit, Reed-Francois believes can someday more than double the UA’s annual income from Learfield (about $7 million). My question is this: Does she know something that Alabama AD Greg Byrne, Texas AD Chris del Conte and Ohio State AD Gene Smith don’t know? All employ Learfield, among 161 schools to do so, including future Big 12 rivals Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, TCU and Texas Tech. Reed-Francois is eliminating the middleman. She is swinging for the fences and betting on herself. It could be an uphill battle. [...] Reed-Francois is not Dave Heeke, who was about to sign a 10-year contract extension with Learfield before being fired in January. As we are seeing, Reed-Francois is doing her own paradigm shift. [...] Reed-Francois is just stepping up to the plate at Arizona, which needs some serious stepping up.” (link)

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is calling for warning labels on social media platforms, writing in a New York Times op-ed that “the mental health crisis among young people is an emergency – and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours. Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.” Therefore, “it is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.” Murthy asserts that social media companies should be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public and allow independent safety audits. “Schools should ensure that classroom learning and social time are phone-free experiences. Parents, too, should create phone-free zones around bedtime, meals and social gatherings to safeguard their kids’ sleep and real-life connections — both of which have direct effects on mental health. And they should wait until after middle school to allow their kids access to social media.” Murthy concludes: “The moral test of any society is how well it protects its children. … We have the expertise, resources and tools to make social media safe for our kids. Now is the time to summon the will to act. Our children’s well-being is at stake.” (link)

The Business of Creativity Podcast highlights creativity in business leadership, management, and entrepreneurship.
Urina Harrell started her company, Vox Pop Branding, while she was a student-athlete at Duke. At the time, college athletes couldn't make any extra income as it was before the Name-Image-Likeness movement we see today. Now, 11 years later, she is still focused on the purpose of the company which is to help people grow their businesses using positive impact messaging.
• most organizational problems stem from some form of communication issue
• experience as a Walmart buyer gives her insight into marketing strategies
• work-life balance isn't a necessity when what you do is based on who you are

The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte pens on potential candidates for Houston’s open AD chair: Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey, Miami (OH) AD David Sayler, Oregon State AD Scott Barnes, UTSA AD Lisa Campos, as well as Lone Star Sports & Entertainment GM David Fletcher. An unnamed UH source tells Duarte: “We’re not at any direction right now. We’re just going to look and see what’s out there.” (link)

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Scoop Jackson questions the motives of developments at Northwestern: “And while this can be looked at as a new start in the way Northwestern presented it or as a Gragg ‘demotion’ as my colleague Steve Greenberg wrote it, what it really looks like is a power move that’s routed in the politics of the building of an over three quarters of a billion dollars stadium. That’s all coming from private money. That’s what the timing of all of this says. That’s what neither the media or the university really want to talk about. That’s probably what’s really going on. See, they not like us. And he not like them. But the real question is who inside Northwestern is allowing the media to tell lies about them about the lies the media feels they are telling us?” (link)

I would highly recommend a D1.dossier subscription to any administrator considering or entering a search process.” (link)

“I think that the response has been very positive. I think people believe that we’re down the right path. We understand we’re not at the finish line. Nobody has suggested that this is the final version of this model. I think that there’s an understanding that we need to be proactive on this and we can’t sit and wait for somebody else to try to point us in the direction or create the pathway for us.” That’s Eastern Illinois AD Tom Michael on the proposal submitted by the FCS & DI-AAA leadership group on sustainability models for the industry. More from Michael: “We kind of joked like, what we’re talking about here isn’t some novel approach. It’s really what we all got into this for and trying to bring it back to its roots of this model that’s centered around education. We kind of laughed and were like, ‘Wow, that’s a novel idea.’” (link)

More from Louisville’s budget meetings yesterday as Cards AD Josh Heird noted coming scholarship changes for some sports in light of the House settlement. Also from Heird on new revenue opportunities & positive hoops vibes: “For me, nothing's off the table. Let's have a conversation about it. You know, some ideas are going to work. Some of them are not going to work. I think one of the big things that we want to try to do as we move forward is — as opposed to creating donor fatigue by saying, 'Hey, we need some money’ — we want to try to create a more comprehensive package. This is what this athletic department needs to operate. This is the expense tied to it. I'm talking to the donor and the fan. And you know, we just approved football season ticket prices for next year. This is an industry that we know what it's going to cost to operate now, right? So how do we come up with that revenue to operate at the level our fans expect us to. [...] There's some presumptions there that basketball is going to do better than it's done the last couple of years. But as I say, if you're not going to be an optimist in this job, then why are you doing this job? I think it's a realistic budget and allows our head coaches and all of our department heads to stay within the budgets that we've outlined for them. I think we're in a good position." (link)

New James Madison AD Matt Roan notes the Dukes have surpassed 7,000 donors for the first time in department history and have sold out of football season tickets for the second straight year. Also from Roan: “Interest in this university and our athletics program has never been higher, as evident by application numbers, donations, campus visits, ticket sales, licensing, corporate sponsorship and more. Job candidates increasingly cite JMU as a place on the rise. … In August, we anticipate that JMU will receive its letter from the NCAA that it has completed its reclassification to the FBS level. This is another key moment in a line of transformational steps for this program.” (link)

Hawaii AD Craig Angelos reflects on his first year of leadership in Honolulu: “What I’ve tried to do this first year is look and listen and find out what has been going on and see what’s going well, continue that. If things need an adjustment or a change, then try to find a solution for that, too. I’ve done that for the whole year, looked under every rock and opened every aspect of the department. Things are going well. I’ve moved on, and things that have needed adjustment, I’ve tried to hone in on that. It’s been a good experience. [...] Some of the challenges I’ve seen, which is the same as almost any place in college athletics: The challenge of the financial structure. Being able to raise money, being able to sell tickets, get revenue sources. That’s been probably the biggest challenge, is trying to look at things like how do we raise our fundraising model. How can we improve our ticket sales model? Our licensing model, how do we monetize our assets that we have? That’s the name of the game in college athletics. When you talk to the athletic directors I’ve been around lately, it’s about, ‘How do we monetize these assets at our university?’ Because it’s never enough, and that’s what we have to do here: Continue to try to monetize our assets and put out a good product, continue to represent the school and state well. But all that takes money.” (link)

East Tennessee State AD Richard Sander talks about the positioning of the Bucs amid industry change: “We’re really excited about where we are. Nobody knows exactly where things are going in the changing landscape of college sports, but I think we’re positioned nicely. We have a vision to serve our student-athletes and also to serve the university. We’ve got a lot of momentum.” Sander also talks about the challenges of leadership selection: “It’s the most difficult thing you can do as an athletic director. You’re affecting people’s lives. You have great people, but my job is what’s best for the university and the region. It’s never pleasant to make those hard decisions. If you’re not getting it done, it affects the players too. We have to set a standard as what’s acceptable. Unfortunately, you’re not winning enough games. If you see a path forward, you can take a little more time. When you don’t see that, you have to make that very difficult decision.” (link)

Norfolk State Track & Field student-athlete Kai Cole’s automatic qualifying time for the US Olympic Trials was rejected by the United States Track and Field (USATF) organization because the event he ran the qualifying time in, the 2024 MEAC championships, was not sanctioned by the USATF. NSU’s statement, in part: “Kai had earned the well-deserved opportunity to represent his country on the international stage, showcasing his exceptional talent and unwavering dedication. It is truly disheartening that he will not be able to pursue his dream of competing on one of the world’s biggest platforms this year. … As a department, Norfolk State Athletics stands firmly behind Kai during this difficult time. We will continue to provide unwavering support as he navigates these challenges and works towards his goals. Together, we will overcome this setback and emerge stronger than ever.” The MEAC’s response, in part: “Although the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship remains an official NCAA Division-I championship event, USATF policy changes implemented this year resulted in the event not being officially sanctioned by USATF, making all competition results ineligible for Olympic Trial qualification. We understand Kai’s frustration and took all available steps to rectify the situation so he could compete in the Olympic Trials – an opportunity he clearly deserves. The MEAC fully supports our member institutions and student-athletes as they pursue their dreams and strive for excellence.” For his part, Cole released a statement via social media expressing his disappointment and voicing that his school didn’t “fully support” his effort to get the decision overturned. YouTube Global Head of Sports Partnerships Jon Cruz this week joined the Streamtime Sports podcast to discuss YouTube’s strategy around live sports rights, subscription channels, and future possibilities with sports creators and pay-per-view and said: “What we are trying to do at YouTube is build optionality for our partners. It is very important to us to make sure that we have all of the content, sports or otherwise, that our users…are looking for. And in order to do that, we recognize that we are going to have to provide rights holders, broadcasters, with different business models, be it ad-supported, be it subscription.” Cruz also points out that with the Sunday Ticket, YouTube worked closely with the NFL to develop exclusive content, footage for its creators and a new-look product. “We wanted to make sure that the experience felt like YouTube and that we weren’t just putting our logo to a stream that was coming from elsewhere. We were able to really partner with our creators to bring fans closer to the game, and also to allow our creators to use NFL IP to create content, to tell stories around the game, be those stories.” More from Cruz.
