Wake Forest AD John Currie receives a contract extension and a promotion to VP/AD, effective July 1. President Susan Wente: "The University continues to benefit from the tremendous reach, brand identity, and engagement Wake Forest Athletics enables for our institution and wider communities. … John continues to provide extraordinary leadership for Wake Forest Athletics during what undoubtedly will be looked back upon as one of the most turbulent periods in college sports' long history. His appointment also as Vice President reflects his broad collaborations across the University as a whole; for example, his recent leadership role in the Baity Street project. John is always looking for solutions and for ways to move Wake Forest forward, for Athletics and for the University as a whole." (link)

We look forward to his continued leadership.” (link)

The NCAA paid former President Mark Emmert a nearly $4.3M severance payment from the association when he departed in 2023, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who notes Emmert’s pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $3.3M. The NCAA’s federal tax return also shows the association had a little more than $61.5M in outside legal expenses during FY23, its highest total since 2020, when it reported $67.7M. Going back to fiscal 2014, when the Alston antitrust case began, the NCAA has reported $432.9M in outside legal expenses and more than $130M in legal-cost recoveries from insurance. Also from Berkowitz: “As of Aug. 31, 2023, the association had just over $565M in endowment funds, nearly all of which was in a ‘board designated or quasi-endowment.’ That represents an increase of nearly $108M in the value of those funds since the same date in 2022. … The return also showed that two other key members of Emmert's staff also received significant severance payments in 2022 or 2023. Former [SVP of Communications Bob Williams] received just over $400K as part of his overall pay for 2022 of slightly more than $815K. Cari Van Senus, Emmert's former chief of staff who later became SVP of Governance, Policy and Human Resources, received nearly $500K in severance in fiscal 2023, the return showed (she was with the NCAA until June 30, 2023); her total pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $545K. (link); Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit note the NCAA’s five highest-paid independent contractors were all law firms. They include Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe ($16.7M) and Bryan Cave LLP ($5.7M). They also report EVP for Regulatory Affairs Stan Wilcox and recently retired CMO Brian Hainline were the only other NCAA executives that made over $1M aside from Emmert. Wilcox was paid $1.5M in total compensation; Hainline was paid just over $1M. The NCAA took in $1.26B in revenue, and its “total employee base continues to drop. It was 591 in calendar year 2022, down from a high of 657 in 2019. It had been 600-plus in every year from 2013 to 2020.” (link)

In addition, the Fox broadcast network will remain the home of the Big East Men’s Tournament Final through 2031. Additionally, Big East women’s basketball coverage will be enhanced significantly, with the networks at least tripling the current contractual commitment under the current agreement up to 65 regular season games and all Big East Tournament games. The Big East was advised by Allen & Company and Proskauer in its negotiations. Financial terms have yet to be made available. (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Scott Soshnick provide some insight into how College Athletic Solutions’ (CAS) could structure its deals with college athletic departments and explain: “The standard management fee arrangement in private capital is ‘two and twenty,’ where firms collect a 2% annual fee on collected capital, plus a 20% performance fee on returns over a designated benchmark. CAS intends to collect a slightly smaller cut on both numbers,” according to a deck viewed by Sportico. “That’s not too dissimilar than those in an Ares Management debt fund that lends to pro sports teams. The Ares fund has a management fee of 2% for investors that contribute up to $5M, 1.75% for investors in the $5-10M range and 1.5% for those putting in more than $10M. The Ares fund’s performance fee is 20% of returns above a 7% hurdle.” As for the setup, Novy-Williams and Soshnick explain the “imagined structure is to create a university-controlled special purpose vehicle, a ‘NewCo,’ to be the landing place for all athletic department income. That includes money from CAS, support from the academic side of the institution, plus revenue generated from department donations, ticket sales, media rights, etc. Revenue would then be shared by CAS and the school. The deck explicitly says that CAS would not have any board control of the NewCo.” Also from the deck, a “case study offers a hypothetical of CAS lending the athletic department $150M, with the ability to share in revenue for the next 15 years. In that scenario, according to the deck’s projections, CAS estimates it would see $26M returned in the first year, eventually recouping its total original investment by the end of Year 5. By Year 15, its final year sharing in revenue, the projections have CAS more than doubling its money, recouping 201%. (Interestingly, it also includes a ‘sale case,’ where its right to future revenue is possibly sold to a third party before the 15-year term is over.). Lots more. (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz sits down with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor to discuss the future for WSU and Oregon State, the growing power of the Big Ten and SEC, naming Anne McCoy as permanent AD and why he’s decided to retire in June 2025. Schulz believes the Pac-12 likely would have ended up in the same place regardless of whether there was less presidential turnover the last couple years. “I think the hubris of a lot of the presidents on overvaluing ourselves in the marketplace did more damage to us in the last three years than anything else.” Schulz also posits that commissioners have become more powerful over the past several years and tells Canzano: “Once all this stuff went down with the (College Football) playoff and with the unequal distributions between the conferences and stuff like that, a few presidents are going, ‘Well, this isn't the way we want to do things.’ It’s like, where were you a year ago?!? And so I really think that we’ve watched that shift.” WSU and OSU are not ruling out any options when it comes to conference affiliation, and Schulz explains: “Our perspective is to keep ourselves flexible, make sure we don’t tie ourselves to something too quickly, whatever that may look like, and do an assessment then of the different options…to figure out which one seems politically the best as well as the one that’s going to provide Washington State with the best ability to compete and win conference championships. … I think early in 2025, we’ve got to make a decision about where we’re going to be for the next four or five years. I don’t think we can continue having a foot in multiple conferences and hoping that something’s going to come our way.” Regarding the $255M war chest, Schulz says WSU and OSU will most likely utilize it to provide a “reasonable subsidy” to preserve their budgets. “I think that has been the approach much, much more so than, ‘Hey, let's sit on a huge bunch of money that we're going to go use to buy schools.’” Lots more. A team of investigators led by former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch recommended Northwestern enhance its hazing prevention training in the wake of last year’s events involving the football program. The report, which was released today by the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, stated that while the “results of our review have been largely positive," investigators found room for improvement when it came to preventing hazing during a nearly year-long review. Also from the report: "Some people expressed an interest in more interactive and scenario-based anti-hazing trainings, while others thought a greater emphasis on bystander intervention would be valuable. Accordingly, we recommend that the Athletics Department consider ways in which it can incorporate more bystander intervention, interactive, and scenario based trainings into its existing anti-hazing training program." In compiling the report, investigators interviewed more than 120 people, including current and former student-athletes, non-athlete students, coaches, athletic administrators and staff, faculty, university administrators and trustees. Playfly is set to launch Playfly Max, a service for schools focused on better monetizing existing revenue streams and exploring new ways to add dollars to athletic department budgets. According to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, Penn State, Baylor and LSU will be the first athletic departments to use the service. Playfly President Christy Hedgpeth: “Change is going to continue in this space. NIL is here to stay. That toothpaste is out of the tube – and that's great – but schools are never going to need less revenue. And that is our entire mindset. What's valuable about Playfly Max is its flexibility. The whole thing is about being strategic and identifying opportunities, and whatever the current environment is and customizing it to each school, because every school is different.” Baylor NIL GM David Kaye: “If you think back two years ago, I could not have told you all the things that are available to us today. And I'd imagine a year from now we're going to look back and say ‘I hadn't even thought of that as a potential revenue opportunity.’ So having a partnership with people you trust [at Playfly] and you know, we're going to be on the forefront is just so valuable when there's so much unknown.” (link)

Houston’s next AD must address five pressing issues, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, who identifies those issues as budget, coaching situations, attendance, donor growth and facilities. While the Cougars are in “good shape in several sports,” Duarte asks: “But what to do with some underperforming sports? Softball coach Kristen Vesely’s contract expires July 31, and it would be a tough sell to renew it after a four-year postseason drought. Women’s basketball coach Ron Hughey has one year left on his contract, and baseball coach Todd Whitting has two years left on an extension signed last summer.” On the topic of growing the donor base, Duarte observes: “One of the major reasons for Pezman’s dismissal, according to a source, was his inability to make significant progress in fundraising and corporate sponsorships. In the most recent filings for 2023, UH lagged in both areas, with $10.1M in donor contributions and $5.65M in corporate sponsorships, according to the Knight Commission, which compiles data from revenue and expense reports colleges file annually with the NCAA. … Does anyone remember the RISE campaign announced in 2022? After providing early updates on progress toward the $150M goal, not a peep has been heard since. Not exactly the way to drum up support.” More. (link)

Houston’s TDECU Stadium could also have a new name beginning in 2025 as the Texas Dow Employees Credit Union undergoes a rebrand. The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte notes the name change would not impact the company’s naming rights deal with the Cougars, which runs through at least 2034. (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch says he has set a couple of early priorities for the Tigers, with fundraising for the $250M renovation to the north end zone at Faurot Field at the top of the list, followed closely by monitoring the evolving NIL landscape. As for what college athletics looks like post-House, Veatch remarks: "A lot of it right now is speculation, as you know, so it's trying to anticipate what this could look like and a lot of modeling and strategic discussions in the background with the department and key individuals in the conference and others. A lot of what you're trying to do is predict what it may be and how we could position ourselves." Veatch goes on to note he’s “been really impressed with the kind of infrastructure that's been built here at Mizzou, in large part because of the state law and how we've all kind of come together to make this happen. In many ways, I do see that sort of next era of NIL support really needing to come from the corporate sector, which is what NIL is intended to be on the front end. … We need to really lean into that. I think it's a huge opportunity for Mizzou, in part because we're in such a big state." (link)

Middle Tennessee State AD Chris Massaro weighs in on the structure of the House settlement: "I didn't think it was fair, in terms of who pays. In essence, the rest of us are funding some of the Power Five athletes from the last 10 years. That is up to the plaintiffs, but it's interesting to see their formulas. Our runs in the NCAA (basketball) tournament and extra shares, those will be dinged. Starting next summer we won't get as much NCAA distribution to pay for this. Everybody will have to pay that for the next 10 years of a reduced income from the NCAA." Massaro adds, however, that the settlements will at least provide some sense of clarity. "We have a bit of a path, a bit of a direction. We're not just some rudderless ship out there just riding the current, which is what I felt like we were doing over the last four or five years. I think there is a direction that we can go, and that is a positive. The positive for MTSU is our location, our economics and our resources. What we've accomplished and those things, and where we've positioned ourselves. We're in good shape. I'm not scared of our future. It will just look a little different. I think the future at MTSU is going to be great." (link)

Florida State has responded to the ACC in Florida’s First District Court of Appeal. The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker notes ACC is arguing that previous rulings in Leon County were incorrect and reports: “FSU counters by stressing that the Leon County court had discretion to rule in its favor by allowing the Seminoles’ lawsuit to proceed. There were, FSU said in a filing Tuesday evening, ‘unique factors or circumstances’ that could be considered and weighed in Florida State’s favor.” Baker also points out that “sovereign immunity is a point of contention in the FSU-ACC dispute. FSU’s filing notes that ‘it was the ACC that injected sovereign immunity into its North Carolina (lawsuit)’ from the beginning. Now for the interesting part: The ‘appeal is likely to be complex and lengthy, and to extend beyond the North Carolina courts.’ The filing doesn’t specify what courts ‘beyond’ the ones in North Carolina are in play, but there are scenarios where this case goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.” (link)

A bill in the California legislature aimed at mandating and regulating college athletes’ health and welfare was withdrawn by its sponsor yesterday, Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-41). The bill was scheduled for a hearing and vote by a state Senate committee today. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz points out that “because of the legislature’s calendar and legislative deadlines, the action effectively kills the bill for the remainder of a two-year session that finishes at the end of August. In addition, [Holden] will reach the state-mandated 12-year limit on lifetime service in the legislature this year.” The NCAA says it was pleased by Wednesday’s outcome. SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley: “The NCAA and member schools have been working hard to educate lawmakers in California and across the country about the positive changes taking place at the association to address the needs of modern student-athletes. Those changes combined with the landmark settlement proposal is making clear that state by state legislation would be detrimental to college sports, and that many past legislative proposals will create more challenges than they solve.” (link)

CBS’ Jon Rothstein reports there will be no rule changes regarding exhibition games in college basketball during the 2024-25 season after the DI Council decided to table the discussion. “The Division I Council also tabled the topic of whether or not two teams from the same conference can play in the same, single-site, eight-team MTE moving forward.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers is told by multiple sources that Texas and new Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle had agreed to a deal “between Texas A&M’s series with Georgia and before the Regional round.” Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte describes hiding in a cemetery outside College Station waiting for Schlossnagle to come home so Del Conte could make his pitch. “With Jim, our eggs were in one basket. I was banking on my relationship with him that we could come to a deal. I was really nervous, to tell you the truth. … When I was in the cemetery, [then on the way] to their house, it’s just as crazy as it sounds. I played every scenario in my mind. I drove to his house, had a long, long discussion, put him in the car, and we drove off.” (link, link)

ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus tells The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch that Warner Bros. Discovery “made a really compelling case” to get TNT involved with the College Football Playoff. “The arrangement has several facets that we felt were kind of table stakes for us, which in my world is that we are going to produce the games and it’s going to be our talent on the games. As we sit here today, (WBD doesn’t) televise regular-season college football, so they don’t have an infrastructure that’s built around the sport. … Branding can be figured out easily. So we thought this is an opportunity to get somebody else involved who’s got a big platform that has reach, that has a different audience composition than we do.” Magnus presumes Pat McAfee will be back on College GameDay this season, telling Deitsch: “Yeah, I presume he will. What Andrew (Marchand) reported is technically true relative to ink on a piece of paper. But as you know in our world, it’s a fairly common situation to have reached an agreement without an executed contract or piece of paper. … I think from time to time Pat likes to just muse on what he may or may not want to do. … We’re not in the business of handcuffing anybody to a table. This is not unique to Pat. If somebody comes to us and says, ‘Hey, I’d rather do this or that instead of that,’ we’ll listen and have those conversations. But Pat I expect to be there on College GameDay.” Magnus on the WNBA: “We’re extremely bullish on it. We’ve been there since Day 1 of the WNBA, and we’re really proud of that. We feel similarly about the women’s NCAA basketball tournament and the hard work that’s been done over decades with that property in order to grow the game. Caitlin Clark is a phenomenon, and of course, it’s brought sort of meteoric levels really quickly, which is a little bit of an issue they’ve been dealing with relative to the coverage and the scrutiny around the game. When that sort of normalizes and finds its level, the audiences and the interest in the WNBA is going to be significantly higher than it has been historically.” More. (link)

According to Nielsen estimates, the number of households with access to ESPN cable coverage is down from 70.2M in December 2023 to 67.7M in June 2024. TBS and TNT are in 68.5M and 64.4M homes via cable, respectively, and Sports TV Ratings notes those figures include roughly 2M homes “using dynamic ad insertion (DAI) that aren't included in TV ratings measurement for national advertising (i.e., ~all the ratings you've ever seen!) but still matter as far as distribution fees paid. Fox Sports is in 67.9M homes. (link)
