Rutgers AD Hobbs tells The Knight Report the search for the next Big Ten Commissioner is making progress & is aiming to be complete by the end of May. Hobbs: “They’re going to try to do this as quietly as possible. My understanding is that there is great interest in the position, not surprisingly. [...] They have received a lot of resumes from a wide sort of range of backgrounds. Some college, some not college. I haven’t seen those resumes, we won’t see those resumes. [...] There’s not a lot of people who can be Big Ten commissioner, in my view. This is not sort of inside information from the committee.” (link)

La Salle AD Baptiste is indeed headed to Coral Gables to join the Miami (FL) leadership team. Baptiste’s role is technically Senior Deputy AD, not COO as had been previously reported. The selection of Oregon President-elect Scholz has stoked the fires of speculation that Oregon and Washington will join the Big Ten, according to Ducks Wire’s Neel, who notes Scholz not only lauded the addition of UCLA and USC, but also voted for the move as Wisconsin’s then-interim chancellor. Furthermore, asked about UO’s potential move to the Big Ten, Scholz told The Oregonian: “I cannot answer that question right now. I am a hardcore Oregon Duck now; so I very much want to see what’s in the best interest of this university.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Bjork says the Aggies are gathering data and feedback from the MBB Selection Committee concerning their seeding (A&M is a 7 seed after going 25-9 / 15-3 & finishing second in the SEC), telling TexAgs Radio the SEC has biweekly meetings with members of the committee to highlight the metrics for its teams. “It's disappointing because I'm a believer that you are what your record says you are, but in this process, that's not the case because they can use selective data and nitpick certain negative things about you. How are the positive things weighted vs. the negative things? We don't know. It's not transparent from that perspective.” Bjork goes on to remark that “if this team was penalized for Buzz's ‘rant’ last season, then the process and the people are more flawed than maybe we think they are. … It should be about the players on the court, not what somebody said or manipulated data. … What we want to find out is where are the goal posts and how is this consistent every year.” More from Bjork. Arkansas AD Yurachek tells the UA Board of Trustees that Bud Walton Arena has “served us well” over the past 30 years but is “somewhat tired and in need of renovation.” Yurachek presented three possible scenarios for renovating the facility but notes they are from a “very preliminary feasibility study [and] are only concepts right now.” This summer, Yurachek plans to present an architect and general contractor to the board before bringing a recommendation for renovations the following winter or spring. North Dakota State will pay $15K in travel costs to send its WBB team to the WNIT, while North Dakota will pay a $17K entry fee plus travel costs to send its team to the WBI. Bison AD Larsen says the costs represent an investment in the program. “We think the future is bright for women's basketball at NDSU and to earn a bid to the WNIT and participate in postseason basketball is a huge step forward for the program. … To have an opportunity to play postseason basketball for the first time in our Division I era is exciting.” Meanwhile, Fighting Hawks AD Chaves notes that playing all three games in one place (Lexington, KY) helped make the WBI an attractive option. “I think for us it's a year by year proposition based on the team, based on the situation. Obviously the goal is to make the NCAA tournament, but failing that we'll figure out what makes sense for us and where we are." (link)

During his intro presser in Oxford, new Ole Miss MBB HC Beard declined to go into specifics about his arrest in December, but said: "Randi and I have agreed not to talk about the details, not only that night, but the nights that we went through this, the process. But what I can tell you is much of what was reported is not accurate." Beard also cited a statement from his fiancée, who said in December: “As Chris’ fiancée and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening.” Asked what he would say to fans who still held concerns, Beard replied that he would like a chance to build a relationship on trust, adding: “That’s not me. That's not who I am. It's not who I've been. It's not who I will be." (link)

Cincinnati AD Cunningham and Cincy Reigns Founder Fox jointly announce the collective is asking for 7K supporters at the $350 [yearly] level. Cunningham: “This is what it's going to take. We're going to have to decide how we want to be and how we want to compete. Right now it has to be right there with NIL and Cincy Reigns. … This is sustainable only if everybody gives a little bit. … Especially at Cincinnati, that's how we're going to be successful. Understanding as you sit there and go to games, 'What can I do a little bit to be a part of this club so we can continue to support our coaches and be successful?' You don't have to be the No. 1 school in the country as to how you source NIL, but you have to have table stakes." (link)

The U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee on March 29 plans to hold a hearing on NIL. While the committee has yet to disclose who will be asked to testify, ESPN’s Murphy reports the hearing will be led by Congresswoman/Committee Chair Rodgers (R-WA) and Congressman Bilirakis (R-FL), who say their aim is to “create a clear set of rules for male and female athletes of every sport to benefit from their name, image and likeness -- at both large and small schools in every state -- to preserve the future of college athletics.” (link)

In the second of a two-part conversation with On3, LEAD1 CEO McMillen says the implications of sports betting are “truly existential” and potentially “catastrophic,” as sports integrity experts say there is a 100% likelihood of a sports betting scandal on a college campus in the next few years.” McMillen points out the NCAA last conducted a study on how much student-athletes bet on sports in 2003 and believes the entire industry would benefit from up-to-date study. Additionally, McMillen contends the NCAA should strongly consider outsourcing its enforcement mechanism, as hosting championships while also being in charge of disciplining rulebreakers makes for a difficult balance to strike. NCAA correspondent Katz is joined by NCAA SVP of Basketball Gavitt and VP of WBB Holzman to preview March Madness. Of particular note, Holzman says the NCAA continues to gather data about holding first and second round matchups on campus sites and “then as we look forward toward latter championships, they’re intentionally going to review all that, look at where we are with the growth of the championship, and then make decisions if this type of hosting format continues or we if we move, similar to the men, to a neutrally located site for the First Four and those first and second rounds.” (link)

Meanwhile, The Athletic caught up with more than 30 WBB coaches over the past month to gather their thoughts on topics ranging from on-court strategy to NIL. The first topic concerns expanding the NCAA Tournament, with 61% indicating they opposed it, while 23% were in favor and 16% were unsure/undecided. One coach in favor explains: “I was part of a conference for a long time where it was really hard to get that second bid. Not that we never got that second bid, but, man, it came down to the three days in March and you might go 15–3 and not get in.” One coach who opposes expansion argues: “I think it devalues it. I think if we expanded, it would be doing it because the men are doing it and I don’t think that’s a justifiable reason. I feel like our sport is gaining traction and validity and the parity is better. It’s a broader brush of interest in terms of who’s watching. I think that waters it down while we’re starting to gain momentum.” Meanwhile, one coach who voted they were undecided was particularly forthcoming in their assessment: “I think it would be terrible to have it expand. Believe me, would I vote for it at my school? I’m gonna vote for it to expand because I think that gives me a better chance of getting in, and I’m gonna be selfish with that vote. But when it comes to the overall integrity of women’s basketball, no, it does not need to expand.” More topics throughout the week. (link)

The Athletic’s Emerson observes that the recent hires of Auburn FB HC Freeze and Ole Miss MBB HC Beard, along with the situation surrounding Alabama MBB, are feeding into a narrative that SEC programs are willing to win at all costs. “It just means more. It just means too much. … This is a collective issue. Presidents and athletic directors at multiple schools are signing off on these hires, permitting these situations to play out, feeding a perception that they put winning above all else.” Emerson adds: “The conference is blessed with great resources, passionate fan bases, and yes, good coaches and administrators. There are ample examples of people in the league who do it the right way — or at least don’t color outside the lines — and win lots of games. Collectively, this is not a league that needs to be cutting corners or looking the other way in order to win. And yet individual schools appear to be doing just that.” (link)

+ Howard Softball HC Tyson is speaking out about her two-game suspension stemming from an incident in which she believed a home plate umpire was manipulating her players. Tyson says the incident started when the umpire in her estimation did not give the team enough time to warm up in a game against UC Riverside. HBCU Gameday’s Gaither adds: “Tyson provided video to support her claims that the umpire continued to act in a manipulative manner. She eventually confronted UCR coach Nikki Palmer, who insisted she protest after the game. Tyson said she agreed to, then headed back to her dugout where she encouraged her team to keep playing despite circumstances that she felt were clearly unfair.” Tyson: “While I agree on-field calls are for later interpretation, disrespect, lack of integrity, & silencing a woman & minority girls ARE NOT a FOR LATER task.” Lots more. Protect This House’ is back! Under Armour VP of Global Brand Creative Boring, who worked on the company’s original ‘Protect This House’ campaign, talks with Footwear News’ Verry about reimagining the promotion, explaining: “What we wanted to do was work with the team here and dissect its essence — what worked then, what worked through the meteoric growth of the brand — and translate that into 2023 to dimensionalize it for a new generation of athletes.” UA SVP of Global Marketing Nugent on the timing of the campaign: “We know that March Madness is a hugely important cultural moment for this audience. And we know the athlete stable that we have resonates and is very important to this audience. … The reality is the audience we want to connect with, the 16 to 20-year-old team sport athletes, some of them weren’t even born when the first ad hit. There is a reality to this being an introduction to the tonality of Under Armour in a way that that generation, quite frankly, hasn’t seen.” Boring adds: “It was also a perfect opportunity for us to include some incredible women athletes. The sport of basketball is very inclusive. It’s played around the world, it’s played by both genders and the competition is very high. We have Aliyah Boston, who is a reigning champ — and Coach [Dawn] Staley makes a cameo with the rest of the women in South Carolina.” (link)

Big Ten FB coaches and administrators discussed establishing an officiating command center during a recent meeting, and one HC tells On3: “We voted to do it as coaches, it went to the ADs. It looked like it was unanimously voted to approve to do it (by ADs). But what we’ve learned as coaches, especially through COVID and beyond, is once we leave the room, we have no idea where this stuff is going. It’s an interesting time. It’s a really interesting time. … The conference would have to figure out if this is feasible and if it’s financially attainable here quickly if it wants to get it done before this fall.” If the membership can agree on who is running the command center, a second HC says he believes a command center will be in place for this season.
