NCAA President Charlie Baker joined AthleticDirectorU Co-Founder Jason Belzer at the 2024 NIL Summit to answer questions submitted by student-athletes. Baker discussed the recently announced deal with Meta, a collaboration with Teamworks to develop an NIL database and voluntary registry, the importance of transparency in the NIL ecosystem, issues of equity in a revenue sharing-model, the future of amateurism, how to preserve the spirit of intercollegiate athletics and more. On the issue of equity and the application of Title IX in a revenue-sharing model, Baker remarks: “I think in this particular case, that one is going to be subject, to some extent, to federal guidance. This is a really hard question for schools to answer on their own for a whole bunch of reasons, but I think the biggest one is what most schools have said to us – and this is an interesting question for you all to think about – is the rules around equity when it comes to Title IX ought to be relatively consistent from school to school…and I don't think you'll find much disagreement anywhere among colleges and universities about that. And that’s going to require a national standard.” Baker adds that if the NCAA tried to establish a national standard itself, it would be challenged in court by anyone who thought the standard favored men or women. Baker goes on to posit that one of the places college sports and the NCAA “got this wrong” was the impact the rise of technology has had on “the way people think about influence and opportunity and commerce.” Baker cites the “rise in the ability for almost anybody who was doing something interesting and different to create a following, and once they created a following to create a brand, create an opportunity to benefit from that. And that is the world we live in, and it's going to be that way – probably more so – going forward. … For me, the amateur word is kind of loaded and has been used for all sorts of purposes and reasons and arguments and debates in court, suits and all the rest for the past 15 years. I tend not to use that word very much.” More on ADU. (link)

The DI Council has adopted changes to the infractions process that clearly define exemplary cooperation and how that cooperation impacts prescribed penalties — including the removal of a postseason ban — for most cases. The changes are effective August 1 and define exemplary cooperation as follows: volunteering all pertinent school and personal information that is in the party's possession or should be reasonably expected to further the infractions process and its expectations; identifying individuals to be interviewed of whom the enforcement staff might otherwise be unaware; expending substantial resources (financial, dedication of personnel, unfettered access to information) to expedite the gathering of information; taking sufficient action to address violations through self-imposed penalties or proposing meaningful corrective measures; and recognizing and bringing to the attention of the enforcement staff violations related to the investigation about which the enforcement staff might otherwise be unaware. The council also voted to increase the minimum fines for Level I and Level II violations from a starting point of $5K to a range of $25-50K, depending on the level of the violations and any relevant aggravating or mitigating factors in a case. The change also increases the potential percentages of additional financial penalties from 1% to up to 10% of a sports program's budget, depending on the same factors. Additionally, the council discussed the application of the vacation-of-records penalty in infractions cases, in which it largely supported the application of the penalty for cases involving ineligible student-athletes but expressed concerns about applying the penalty in cases where the violations resulted from administrative errors by the school. Tennessee AD Danny White comments on other programs potentially trying to hire Baseball HC Tony Vitello and tells The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode: “I don’t think I’d have to even entertain that conversation. Tony knows what he’s built here and it’s special. It’s a relationship between him and his players and the program he’s built, and the fans, that you really can’t replace. Tennessee baseball is here to stay, and he’s the reason why.” Vitello remarked following the Vols’ Men’s College World Series victory that “I’ve been blown away by how friendly everybody is, how involved everybody is. And loyalty is a very important word to everybody, but especially to an Italian fella, and I don’t know that there’s a more loyal fan base and really just community when you’re in that state.” Wake Forest AD John Currie, who brought Vitello to UT, tells Rexrode: “Great head coaches, legendary head coaches, adapt as those dynamics (such as NIL and the portal) change. The base root of the ability to adapt is intellect. Tony Vitello is a lot of things, and one of those things is he’s really, really smart. That was evident from the first time I spoke with him.” Rexrode: “And White is smart enough to know it’s time to give Vitello whatever he wants short of an on-campus shrine to grunge rockers. Baseball isn’t football when it comes to driving revenue, not even close. But a national championship program in baseball? It has — he has — made one of the largest fan bases in college sports fall in love. Sports success like this impacts a university.” (link)

Navigate President Jeff Nelson tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that when it comes to conference naming rights, “the less brand equity that exists in a conference name – or put another way, the less historical significance the name holds – the more feasible it becomes. Conferences and universities cannot afford to dismiss any new revenue stream right now as they try to reimagine their budgets. … We estimated the naming rights of a conference like the Big 12 to be anywhere from $30M-$60M per year depending on a variety of factors. The most influential are how much inventory is included in the total naming rights package and whether there are multiple bidders. But even beyond that, the value could vary greatly depending on whether there are bonuses for CFP advancement, the length of the deal, any business back to the partner and the degree to which any media buy is included.” Nelson goes on to remark that conferences and universities need to consider every possible revenue stream. “It’s a true moment of existential crisis for athletics at most universities. Everything is a trade-off. Would you rather be the president or AD that cut sports in exchange for saying you preserved the conference name? Or would you rather take that naming-rights revenue and get to keep those sports? If you think the answer to that question is you can save sports and still say no to naming rights if you don’t continue directing so much money to football or basketball, the hard truth is, the surest way to lose your job is to fall behind in football or basketball.” (link)

AL.com’s Matt Stahl goes back to 1998 to figure out how weather would have impacted a 12-team College Football Playoff in those years. Using BCS and CFP rankings to plot out the matchups, Stahl notes that “of the 104 first-round games that would have taken place since the start of the BCS era, only 16 saw any snowfall during the Friday-Saturday period. Of those, just nine saw more than an inch of snowfall. The snowiest first-round game would have come in 2016, when 7.4 inches fell in Madison on December 18 and 19 when Wisconsin would have hosted Southern California at Camp Randall.” Of those same 104 possible games, 50 of them would have seen some sort of precipitation during the Friday and Saturday with eight accumulating more than an inch during the two-day period. Stahl notes Ole Miss might have hosted the rainiest contest when hosting Oklahoma State while Oxford collected 2.2 inches of rain. Stahl also points out that 65 of the first-round games “would have been played during two-day periods where the low temperatures dropped below freezing. In 10 of those games, a freezing game would be guaranteed, as the high temperature never crossed that threshold.” The aforementioned Wisconsin-USC matchup would have been the coldest with the high that day reaching 18 degrees in Madison. More from Stahl, including the weather scenarios for each year. (link)

NCAA VP of DI Governance Jenn Fraser sits down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NACDA Convention to talk about the House settlement, what’s on the agenda this summer for committee meetings, what’s next for NIL and the transfer portal and more. As the House settlement works its way through the legal system, Fraser says the NCAA is taking an “inventory of rules. While we work on this long-form term sheet we've got to know what the rules are that are included in this. We've got an amazing team that's working on building that inventory of rules. We've got some work to do on some of the elements of the settlement like the transition to roster size that really can't be accomplished in one legislative action. We're going to need some conversations and some discussion about that. And then lastly, it really provides us an opportunity to think about how we want to be organized and make decisions into the future. … This is an exceptional opportunity to really lean into those conversations and start to figure out how Division I is organized in its decision making, where we need national rules, where it's not appropriate to have national rules, where Division I has to be the same 1-356 and where we can have different rules for different pockets.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. Mississippi Valley State AD Hakim McClellan talks about his decision to step down: “It was just time. It wasn’t anything else than that. It was time to make a move for the family and the overall scope of things. It’s definitely difficult because this is my home. I came here in 2005, I met my wife here. This will always be home. I love this institution with all my heart. We have accomplished a lot in this time. There is always more work to be done wherever you are, but I think we put a great foundation into moving forward.” (link); McClellan’s remarks came after the Delta Devils unveiled a new athletics logo, broke ground on a new turf field project and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new Jumbotron. The DI Council yesterday approved a rule change adopted by the FBS and FCS Oversight Committees to permit any staff member to provide technical and tactical instruction to student-athletes. FBS teams remain limited to up to 11 staff members and FCS teams remain limited to 13 staff members who may participate in off-campus recruiting activities. Both subdivisions must include the HC as a countable off-campus recruiter. The council also voted to remove cannabinoids from the banned drug class for championships and postseason participation in football; approved a change by the Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees and the DI Student-Athlete Experience Committee that removes school restrictions on official visits; will allow student-athletes to compete in more than one foreign tour with the same school (basketball programs are still limited to one foreign tour every four years); approved a change that allows women's basketball programs to compete against another Division I program in one game during a foreign tour; and greenlit several changes to the FBS and FCS recruiting calendars. Full rundown. (link)

Notre Dame has retained the law firm of Ropes & Gray LLP to conduct an independent review of “potential issues with the culture of our men’s swimming and diving team,” per Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua, who adds in an email to staffers: “I believe it is important that you are aware of this matter and the steps being taken to ensure a fair and complete review. We are working closely with outside counsel, University officials and Head Coach Chris Lindauer and his staff to take the proper actions as thoroughly and expeditiously as possible. We take seriously our obligation to foster a community of student-athletes who not only compete and perform at the highest level academically and athletically, but whose conduct is exemplary in all aspects of student life.” According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, the school was made aware of potential issues within the last few weeks. Forde adds: “The timing here is notable given the program's unprecedented success at Olympic Trials. Freestyler Chris Guiliano became Notre Dame's first Olympic swimmer by qualifying in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle, and coach Chris Lindauer was named to the American Olympic team staff.” (link, link)

Boston Celtics GM Brad Stevens comments on how the NIL deals some college basketball players are receiving has affected the NBA Draft: “I do think that as you get later on in the second round – and I don't think this is going to change anytime soon – the advancement of NIL and how out of control that's gotten has really impacted the late 40s and 50s and post-draft and all that type of stuff. There’s a lot of people who went back that probably would be in that mix, but they just got huge paydays. More than [two-way deals]. … I think that will be where the draft might be most impacted consistently over the next few years.” (link)

+ Texas will name Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle as its next HC, according to multiple reports. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz notes Schlossnagle will owe the Aggies $2.7M, “which UT presumably will pay. And per [former Longhorns HC David] Pierce's contract with Texas, UT owes him buyout of nearly $1.85M, subject to duty to mitigate with offset.” (link)
+ In reference to reports that Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle will accept the same job at Texas, Sportico’s Michael McCann points out: “Judges are also paying attention. During the Supreme Court oral argument for NCAA v. Alston, Justice Thomas asked the NCAA's attorney: ‘Is there a similar focus on the compensation to coaches to maintain that distinction between amateur coaches…as opposed to coaches in the pro ranks?’” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft says he’s on board to host a wrestling dual at Beaver Stadium, as suggested by four-time national champion Carter Starocci. “We look at everything, we try to get as creative as possible. I would love it. My man Carter, I love him. Obviously everyone knows I think he’s the best. And I appreciate him saying that. I think there’s some things you have to work through right? Scheduling, whether it’s between football and wrestling, what game are you gonna have, you can’t tear the field up. I think it would be ultra successful. I think it’d be awesome. I want to do it. It’s just a matter of working through a lot of logistical things. And it’s a little more difficult than just throwing the event in Beaver right? We’ve got to work through logistics with that. But I hope one day we have it.” (link)

Relocating to Ruston, Louisiana, for incoming Louisiana Tech coaches and administrators just got a lot easier thanks to the athletic department’s new partnership with D1.relocation, the nation’s only full-service relocation company that solely focuses on collegiate athletics to alleviate many of the challenges athletic professionals face transitioning to their new institution. D1.relocation COO Daniel Feig: “We've been working on this partnership since last year. We were set to finalize our partnership with La Tech last winter when they had a transition in leadership and we put the deal on pause. Thankfully, we already had a pre-existing relationship with new Director of Athletics Ryan Ivey and were able to continue our dialog once he arrived. In fact, Ryan himself was our first new Bulldog to help relocate as he and his lovely family moved to Ruston earlier this summer! We're excited to work with Ryan and his team to simplify the relocation process and ease the transition for all of their incoming hires, so they can focus on their new jobs and not get bogged down with all of the logistics of their move." The Jacksonville City Council has passed a proposal through which the city and the Jaguars will each pay $625M for renovations to Everbank Stadium. As a result, the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to 43,500 in 2026 and the team will play in an alternate venue in 2027, meaning the annual Georgia-Florida football game will likely be played elsewhere during those two seasons. The three-game Tennessee-Texas A&M championship marked the second-best Men’s College World Series final on record in terms of viewership, behind only LSU-Florida last year, according to SBJ’s Austin Karp, who reports the “three games across ABC, ESPN and ESPNU this year averaged 2.82M viewers, just 2% below the record-setting three games for the Tigers and Gators last year. Among the three games in 2024, two now rank among the four most-watched college baseball games ever across ESPN platforms. That includes 2.92M on ABC/ESPNU for Game 2, which is the best Game 2 audience for a CWS final on record.” Also: “ESPNU had ump cam alt-casts for each of the three games in the final. The alt-cast for Game 2 was the best of the three with 263K on ESPNU. For a comparison, that’s just below what the ‘Bird & Taurasi’ alt-cast drew on ESPN2 around the South Carolina-N.C. State NCAA Women’s Basketball semifinal back on April 5 (294K).” (link)
