Davis & Elkins selects Director of Compliance/Assoc. Professor of Sport Science Jennifer Riggleman as its next AD, starting July 1. President Chris Wood: “Dr. Riggleman is ideal to step into this important role at Davis and Elkins. As a faculty member, she is highly respected by colleagues and students alike. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue reports the West Texas A&M AD search is down to three finalists: one RMAC AD, one LSC AD and one internal candidate. Hogue adding: “Other sources indicate that on-campus visits have yet to occur, and some hesitancy remains about the finalists. Some influential supporters close to the university were surprised that more candidates did not apply for the position and are seeking to ensure WT makes the best choice for future success.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker joined AthleticDirectorU Co-Founder Jason Belzer at the 2024 NIL Summit to answer questions submitted by student-athletes. Baker discussed the recently announced deal with Meta, a collaboration with Teamworks to develop an NIL database and voluntary registry, the importance of transparency in the NIL ecosystem, issues of equity in a revenue sharing-model, the future of amateurism, how to preserve the spirit of intercollegiate athletics and more. On the issue of equity and the application of Title IX in a revenue-sharing model, Baker remarks it will be subject to federal guidance, adding that if the NCAA tried to establish a national standard itself, it would be challenged in court by anyone who thought the standard favored men or women. Baker goes on to posit that one of the places college sports and the NCAA “got this wrong” was the impact the rise of technology has had on “the way people think about influence and opportunity and commerce.” On the NCAA’s growing fan database, Baker notes the association “tried some experiments on this in the spring in certain sports and had 30% year-over-year increases in ticket revenue.” Further: “I’m also going to want to start creating a reciprocal relationship between us and the schools around this data as well because I also think this can drive merchandising and purchasing and a whole bunch of other things as well, particularly if we get to 25 million fans, which I believe we will in the next year or two.” More on ADU. Barton announces the addition of Field Hockey to its women’s sports portfolio beginning in fall of 2025. AD Ken Tyler: “After extensive research and analysis, we feel that field hockey is a natural fit for our Department of Athletics. It's a growing sport in our region and will provide opportunities in geographic areas where we're interested in recruiting more students. Field hockey will be an excellent complement in our pursuit of academic and athletic excellence, and we hope to compete in Conference Carolinas as early as 2026.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education is committed to ensuring this year’s FAFSA forms are ready promptly by October 1, asserting in a statement last week that “we have heard from students, families, institutions, states, and those that support them that it is important for the 2025-26 FAFSA form to launch on October 1. The Department has made significant progress to address and resolve all major known issues with the 2024-25 form and will continue to make improvements to the form to enable a better user experience.” Some administrators remain skeptical, including Saint Louis (DI) VP for Enrollment Management Rob Reddy, who says: “Between [Federal Student Aid COO Richard Cordray’s] departure and the instability and uncertainty that comes with an election year…all of this leads me to believe there will be a delay. If I don’t prepare for that eventuality, I’d be derelict in my job.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes there are reasons for optimism, however, citing the appointment of College Board President Jeremy Singer to oversee the next rollout and the elimination of a 90-day window for feedback. NASFAA Director of Policy Analysis Jill Desjean: “I’d say this increases the likelihood they’ll meet the Oct. 1 launch date, but it comes at the cost of not making changes for next year. Given the magnitude of the changes from this year, I think people would have appreciated the time to comment.” (link)
