Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly has signed a contract extension through June 2027. Hawai’i President/Big West Board Chair David Lassner: “The Big West Board has great appreciation and respect for Dan's work as our Commissioner. Yantko will also receive $25K each year for media appearances, promotion activities and other events to advance the department. Memphis Board of Trustees Chair Cato Johnson explains why he believes Virginia Deputy AD Ed Scott is the right choice to lead the Tigers: “If there was one thing that sold me (on Scott), it was his ability to stand before an audience and articulate his vision for where he wants to take this program. When you’re at the University of Memphis and you’re in Memphis, Tennessee, the community wants to know that you have a vision for taking us to another level. And he is very, very confident he can make it happen.” Johnson was also impressed that Scott has his doctorate and says he was taken by Scott’s intangibles. “With the landscape of where college athletics is going, you must be able to not only build relationships but also have existing relationships. You must be able to understand where the process is going and know the individuals and entities to help (Memphis) get to the next level.” (link)

The Commercial Appeal’s Jonah Dylan details five things incoming Memphis AD Ed Scott should address as soon as possible, starting with finalizing a timeline for the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium renovation, which includes raising an additional $27M. Deputy AD Jeff Crane said earlier this month that the department has raised about $23M for the renovations as part of a challenge grant from FedEx Founder Fred Smith that helped unlock the project with $120M in state money. Memphis still has to get to $50M raised to unlock the $50M donation from Smith. Scott will also need to address where the Tigers fall in conference realignment, forge a relationship with Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway, finalize plans for Memphis’ other renovation projects and hire a new softball coach. On conference realignment: “The Big 12 and ACC are theoretically possibilities that could choose to expand in the near future. But so much of that depends on external factors, so Memphis' priority is likely to continue trying to position itself to pounce if an opportunity does arise. Scott and university president Bill Hardgrave will probably engage in conference alignment-related discussions with other stakeholders right away, and the future of Memphis' conference affiliation is likely to be part of Scott's legacy in the Bluff City.” (link)

Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon joins MSU’s Dialogue Matters program to discuss several topics, including the changes occurring within the industry. “There's never been a more dynamic and changing time in college athletics, but as you look at it, one of the beautiful things about sports is that you've got to grow and you've got to adapt. So, there are a lot of things going on from a national level, there are a lot of storms swirling if you will, but I do think the eye of the storm, when we get in there and we have clarity, we can really make a lot of progress. We're looking at things from a national level and also the changes we need to make from the institutional and the local level to make sure we’re meeting the needs of today's student-athletes, coaches and support staff, but also getting ready for the future and to go where the puck is going if you will. So we're really excited about where we're at and knowing there's going to be a lot of great opportunities for Mississippi State in the near future.” Despite all the changes, Selmon remarks that the “intersection of higher education and sport is life-changing, and that will never change. And that's something I'm so excited about, knowing that every day we get to solve for issues and we can find opportunities that we can continue to pay it forward for student-athletes now and our next generation of student-athletes.” More from Selmon. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller talks more about his decision to take over in Conway and explains: “I looked at the past success and the foundation, but there’s so much more room for growth here. You look at some of the revenues, I think there's a huge room for growth in that with the growing community, the growing enrollment that I talked about. We can really expand that reach and bring new people into the fold and help provide resources to these other programs so that we can compete at that highest level. And that's something – you're gonna get to know me and the Coastal community is gonna get to know me. I love winning, but I hate losing more, and we’re gonna find those things that have been a hindrance for those programs to really be at that top level, and we're going to eliminate those.” Miller also says he’s told the coaches he’s bringing them out to fundraise with him. “We’re gonna go find people that want to give resources and time to your sports, to your student–athletes, and be able to help them capitalize off of that.” Miller goes on to say it’s important from a facilities perspective to consider options that offer multipurpose functionality. “In this ever-changing landscape of college athletics we’re constantly trying to find new ways to produce revenue, and we've got these beautiful facilities here on campus that our student-athletes only use so often. So, instead of letting it just sit there, how can we build new things that we can… draw in outside people that may not be Coastal Carolina fans, but we can bring them in and make them Coastal Carolina fans.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand reports on the Big East’s new media rights deal and explains that “when NBC Sports President Rick Cordella became interested in picking up broadcast rights to the Big East conference, he didn’t actually ring up the conference. Instead, his first calls went to Fox Sports executives Mark Silverman and Jordan Bazant, who were running the process. WBD Sports’ Luis Silberwasser was right behind him on the phone log.” The idea of rival media companies strategizing together is not without precedent, according to Ourand, who cites the Big Ten’s latest media rights deal. “Fox had a say in those rights because it was a majority owner of the Big Ten Network. Silverman and [former Fox EVP Larry] Jones were designated representatives of the BTN, which created a bizarre and fascinating dynamic in which sports media executives were forced to make a pitch to a rival. … Before the rights hit the open market this year, Fox told the conference that it wanted the same type of deal, but might consider moving away from CBS. The Big East was amenable.” Ourand reports Fox is keeping the main package, and NBC and WBD divvying up the rest. “All told, starting with the 2025-26 season, the Big East will see its rights revenue double to an average of around $80M per year from the $41M the conference receives now.” CBS, he adds, “negotiated to keep its piece, and at one point was viewed as the frontrunner, but bowed out as the conference’s rights fee escalated. … ESPN, which has a ton of college sports programming, didn’t take part in the negotiations. Neither did Amazon or any of the streamers.” (link)

A federal jury in California sided with plaintiffs in a class-action antitrust lawsuit against the NFL over its out-of-market broadcasts, awarding $4.7B in damages to consumers of the league’s Sunday Ticket package. The Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Beaton and Louise Radnofsky point out the damages will be tripled to more than $14B under antitrust law if the judgment is upheld. The NFL in a statement maintains the league’s media distribution strategy is “by far the most fan-friendly distribution model in all of sports and entertainment. We will certainly contest this decision as we believe that the class-action claims in this case are baseless and without merit.” The plaintiffs argued that the way teams pool together and collectively sell their media rights with the Sunday Ticket package is anticompetitive because it forces consumers to pay hundreds of dollars for a product that also includes games they didn’t want, and whose price might be inflated. Nike reported quarterly revenue of $12.6B, well short of the $12.86B expected by analysts. Earnings per share, however, came in at $0.99, beating the $0.85 forecast. During the earnings call, CFO Matthew Friend said revenue would be down “mid-single digits” for FY25, including 10% in Q1. For the year, Nike reported revenue of $51.4B, a 0.3% increase YoY. Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen notes the “only years worse in the past two decades for the Swoosh was at the start of COVID-19 (2019-20) and on the heels of the financial crisis (2009-10). Revenue rose 10% during the previous year.” Jordan was the strongest performer of Nike’s divisions with a 6% sales increase to $7B. (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie receives a contract extension and a promotion to VP/AD, effective July 1. President Susan Wente: "The University continues to benefit from the tremendous reach, brand identity, and engagement Wake Forest Athletics enables for our institution and wider communities. … John continues to provide extraordinary leadership for Wake Forest Athletics during what undoubtedly will be looked back upon as one of the most turbulent periods in college sports' long history. His appointment also as Vice President reflects his broad collaborations across the University as a whole; for example, his recent leadership role in the Baity Street project. John is always looking for solutions and for ways to move Wake Forest forward, for Athletics and for the University as a whole." (link)

Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger inks a five-year contract extension through 2029. Granger: "I would like to thank our Board of Regents and President Crawford for having the trust and belief in me to guide our athletic department. Texas Southern has played a pivotal part in my life and I'm honored to have the opportunity to keep building on the foundation. We are coming off another history-making season both academically and athletically and my goal is to continue elevating TSU to another level as I want to also thank the student-athletes, university faculty and staff and athletic staff for working together as a cohesive unit to ensure TSU remains at the forefront in this era of college athletics." CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio also signs a five-year extension through June 30, 2029. College of Charleston President/CAA Board of Directors Chair Andrew Hsu: “Joe has done an outstanding job of guiding the CAA through a challenging period in collegiate athletics. His success in navigating a global pandemic, fortifying the conference’s membership and enhancing the league’s broadcast and streaming platforms has allowed the CAA to thrive and maintain its excellence both athletically and academically. We look forward to his continued leadership.” (link)

The NCAA paid former President Mark Emmert a nearly $4.3M severance payment from the association when he departed in 2023, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who notes Emmert’s pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $3.3M. The NCAA’s federal tax return also shows the association had a little more than $61.5M in outside legal expenses during FY23, its highest total since 2020, when it reported $67.7M. Going back to fiscal 2014, when the Alston antitrust case began, the NCAA has reported $432.9M in outside legal expenses and more than $130M in legal-cost recoveries from insurance. Also from Berkowitz: “As of Aug. 31, 2023, the association had just over $565M in endowment funds, nearly all of which was in a ‘board designated or quasi-endowment.’ That represents an increase of nearly $108M in the value of those funds since the same date in 2022. … The return also showed that two other key members of Emmert's staff also received significant severance payments in 2022 or 2023. Former [SVP of Communications Bob Williams] received just over $400K as part of his overall pay for 2022 of slightly more than $815K. Cari Van Senus, Emmert's former chief of staff who later became SVP of Governance, Policy and Human Resources, received nearly $500K in severance in fiscal 2023, the return showed (she was with the NCAA until June 30, 2023); her total pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $545K. (link); Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit note the NCAA’s five highest-paid independent contractors were all law firms. They include Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe ($16.7M) and Bryan Cave LLP ($5.7M). They also report EVP for Regulatory Affairs Stan Wilcox and recently retired CMO Brian Hainline were the only other NCAA executives that made over $1M aside from Emmert. Wilcox was paid $1.5M in total compensation; Hainline was paid just over $1M. The NCAA took in $1.26B in revenue, and its “total employee base continues to drop. It was 591 in calendar year 2022, down from a high of 657 in 2019. It had been 600-plus in every year from 2013 to 2020.” (link)

The Big East officially announces a new media rights agreement which will run from 2025-26 through 2030-31 and includes coverage on Fox Sports (Fox, FS1, FS2), NBC Sports (NBC, Peacock) and TNT Sports (TNT, TBS, truTV and Max). Fox Sports will feature at least 80 Big East men’s and women’s basketball contests across the regular season and postseason beginning in 2025-26. In addition, the Fox broadcast network will remain the home of the Big East Men’s Tournament Final through 2031. Additionally, Big East women’s basketball coverage will be enhanced significantly, with the networks at least tripling the current contractual commitment under the current agreement up to 65 regular season games and all Big East Tournament games. The Big East was advised by Allen & Company and Proskauer in its negotiations. Financial terms have yet to be made available. (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Scott Soshnick provide some insight into how College Athletic Solutions’ (CAS) could structure its deals with college athletic departments and explain: “The standard management fee arrangement in private capital is ‘two and twenty,’ where firms collect a 2% annual fee on collected capital, plus a 20% performance fee on returns over a designated benchmark. CAS intends to collect a slightly smaller cut on both numbers,” according to a deck viewed by Sportico. “That’s not too dissimilar than those in an Ares Management debt fund that lends to pro sports teams. The Ares fund has a management fee of 2% for investors that contribute up to $5M, 1.75% for investors in the $5-10M range and 1.5% for those putting in more than $10M. The Ares fund’s performance fee is 20% of returns above a 7% hurdle.” As for the setup, Novy-Williams and Soshnick explain the “imagined structure is to create a university-controlled special purpose vehicle, a ‘NewCo,’ to be the landing place for all athletic department income. That includes money from CAS, support from the academic side of the institution, plus revenue generated from department donations, ticket sales, media rights, etc. Revenue would then be shared by CAS and the school. The deck explicitly says that CAS would not have any board control of the NewCo.” Also from the deck, a “case study offers a hypothetical of CAS lending the athletic department $150M, with the ability to share in revenue for the next 15 years. In that scenario, according to the deck’s projections, CAS estimates it would see $26M returned in the first year, eventually recouping its total original investment by the end of Year 5. By Year 15, its final year sharing in revenue, the projections have CAS more than doubling its money, recouping 201%. (Interestingly, it also includes a ‘sale case,’ where its right to future revenue is possibly sold to a third party before the 15-year term is over.). Lots more. (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz sits down with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor to discuss the future for WSU and Oregon State, the growing power of the Big Ten and SEC, naming Anne McCoy as permanent AD and why he’s decided to retire in June 2025. Schulz believes the Pac-12 likely would have ended up in the same place regardless of whether there was less presidential turnover the last couple years. “I think the hubris of a lot of the presidents on overvaluing ourselves in the marketplace did more damage to us in the last three years than anything else.” Schulz also posits that commissioners have become more powerful over the past several years and tells Canzano: “Once all this stuff went down with the (College Football) playoff and with the unequal distributions between the conferences and stuff like that, a few presidents are going, ‘Well, this isn't the way we want to do things.’ It’s like, where were you a year ago?!? And so I really think that we’ve watched that shift.” WSU and OSU are not ruling out any options when it comes to conference affiliation, and Schulz explains: “Our perspective is to keep ourselves flexible, make sure we don’t tie ourselves to something too quickly, whatever that may look like, and do an assessment then of the different options…to figure out which one seems politically the best as well as the one that’s going to provide Washington State with the best ability to compete and win conference championships. … I think early in 2025, we’ve got to make a decision about where we’re going to be for the next four or five years. I don’t think we can continue having a foot in multiple conferences and hoping that something’s going to come our way.” Regarding the $255M war chest, Schulz says WSU and OSU will most likely utilize it to provide a “reasonable subsidy” to preserve their budgets. “I think that has been the approach much, much more so than, ‘Hey, let's sit on a huge bunch of money that we're going to go use to buy schools.’” Lots more. A team of investigators led by former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch recommended Northwestern enhance its hazing prevention training in the wake of last year’s events involving the football program. The report, which was released today by the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, stated that while the “results of our review have been largely positive," investigators found room for improvement when it came to preventing hazing during a nearly year-long review. Also from the report: "Some people expressed an interest in more interactive and scenario-based anti-hazing trainings, while others thought a greater emphasis on bystander intervention would be valuable. Accordingly, we recommend that the Athletics Department consider ways in which it can incorporate more bystander intervention, interactive, and scenario based trainings into its existing anti-hazing training program." In compiling the report, investigators interviewed more than 120 people, including current and former student-athletes, non-athlete students, coaches, athletic administrators and staff, faculty, university administrators and trustees. Playfly is set to launch Playfly Max, a service for schools focused on better monetizing existing revenue streams and exploring new ways to add dollars to athletic department budgets. According to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, Penn State, Baylor and LSU will be the first athletic departments to use the service. Playfly President Christy Hedgpeth: “Change is going to continue in this space. NIL is here to stay. That toothpaste is out of the tube – and that's great – but schools are never going to need less revenue. And that is our entire mindset. What's valuable about Playfly Max is its flexibility. The whole thing is about being strategic and identifying opportunities, and whatever the current environment is and customizing it to each school, because every school is different.” Baylor NIL GM David Kaye: “If you think back two years ago, I could not have told you all the things that are available to us today. And I'd imagine a year from now we're going to look back and say ‘I hadn't even thought of that as a potential revenue opportunity.’ So having a partnership with people you trust [at Playfly] and you know, we're going to be on the forefront is just so valuable when there's so much unknown.” (link)
