The NCAA paid former President Mark Emmert a nearly $4.3M severance payment from the association when he departed in 2023, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who notes Emmert’s pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $3.3M. The NCAA’s federal tax return also shows the association had a little more than $61.5M in outside legal expenses during FY23, its highest total since 2020, when it reported $67.7M. Going back to fiscal 2014, when the Alston antitrust case began, the NCAA has reported $432.9M in outside legal expenses and more than $130M in legal-cost recoveries from insurance. Also from Berkowtiz: “As of Aug. 31, 2023, the association had just over $565M in endowment funds, nearly all of which was in a ‘board designated or quasi-endowment.’ That represents an increase of nearly $108M in the value of those funds since the same date in 2022. … The return also showed that two other key members of Emmert's staff also received significant severance payments in 2022 or 2023. Former [SVP of Communications Bob Williams] received just over $400K as part of his overall pay for 2022 of slightly more than $815K. Cari Van Senus, Emmert's former chief of staff who later became SVP of Governance, Policy and Human Resources, received nearly $500K in severance in fiscal 2023, the return showed (she was with the NCAA until June 30, 2023); her total pay for the 2022 calendar year was just over $545K. (link); Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit note the NCAA’s five highest-paid independent contractors were all law firms. They include Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe ($16.7M) and Bryan Cave LLP ($5.7M). They also report EVP for Regulatory Affairs Stan Wilcox and recently retired CMO Brian Hainline were the only other NCAA executives that made over $1M aside from Emmert. Wilcox was paid $1.5M in total compensation; Hainline was paid just over $1M. The NCAA took in $1.26B in revenue, and its “total employee base continues to drop. It was 591 in calendar year 2022, down from a high of 657 in 2019. It had been 600-plus in every year from 2013 to 2020.” (link)

The DII Championships Committee is recommending the Management Council eliminate bylaw 18.4.3.1 which requires sport committees to pair teams strictly within their region, as the group works to enhance its regionalization bracketing model. At last week’s meeting, the committee approved the recommendation for a joint division Women’s Basketball championship in the future, sideline replays for the 2024 Football playoffs, with all preliminary-round hosts to provide at least two cameras and sideline instant replay for the 2025 championship, among other changes. On selection criteria, “all six sport committees that initially proposed to use KPI for the 2024-27 selection criteria cycle have confirmed their intent to use the metric effective for the 2024-25 academic year through the 2026-27 academic year.” The group will also test potential bracketing principles using DI and DIII philosophies, including DIII’s new NCAA Power Index (NPI). Regarding streaming, this year’s Football, Women’s Volleyball and Men’s and Women’s Basketball championships on Hudl added around 35K users to the database. More. (link)

More from Missouri Southern AD Rob Mallory’s Athletic Director in Residence on championships and access. While a staunch supporter of metrics and tools to aid in the selection process, “I’m not necessarily an advocate of going to the Division III model. It has its benefits, namely simplification of the process and objective application of criteria across regions.” Asked what changes he would advocate for: “One simple change I’d make for selections is to embrace quality, results-based metrics and raise or eliminate the limit on the number of criteria used in the selection process to give committees as many relevant tools as possible for evaluation. If I had all the power, I would find a way to invest more resources in championships. With that investment I would expand the football bracket to 32 with AQs. I would move to a super-regional model for selections in all team sports, protecting AQs for all conferences but moving away from all regions being guaranteed representation at the championship final site. That would take a pretty significant investment, and it would put additional work on our sport committees when it comes to bracketing. However, I think that could potentially reduce the number of deserving teams that are left out of the postseason and increase the likelihood that our best teams are represented at our final sites. I understand why regionalization exists and is utilized, and it serves a great purpose in the regular season. I don’t think we should pretend it’s perfect as currently constructed, especially when it comes to championships.” (link)

The Peach Belt and RMAC will team up in Men’s Lacrosse to give the four PBC teams and five RMAC members access to an AQ bid starting in 2024-25. Each league will operate its regular-season and conference championship independently, with each league champ to face-off for the NCAA Tournament AQ, with the PBC to host in ‘25 and RMAC to host in ‘26. The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) this week supported a plan to reinstate the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program data request process. The data sharing has been paused since 2018 while the committee considered policy and procedural changes and may be reinstated as early as this winter. CSMAS also affirmed wearable performance technology as a priority topic for the Association and agreed that the Training and Performance Advisory Group should focus its future discussion on wearable performance technologies, with the potential goal of providing enhanced guidance to the membership. Additionally, CSMAS supported the creation of a Q&A document that provides guidance to schools as they implement mental and physical health, safety and performance core guarantees from the holistic student-athlete model adopted last year and effective August 1. The botched FAFSA rollout disproportionately impacted low-income and minority communities, according to Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox. A new report conducted by the Century Foundation found that communities with large Black and Latino populations, a high number of residents living in poverty, or a preponderance of adults without college degrees had a 20% larger YoY completion gap than those with low shares of those populations. The report also found that regions with lower average family incomes experienced steeper declines in completion rates than the national average; in Alabama and Mississippi, for instance, rates declined by more than 25%. Knox continues: “51K fewer FAFSAs were filed year over year in high-poverty regions, for instance, and 42K fewer in regions with lower numbers of college-educated adults. But the gap was most severe in regions with large Black or Latino populations, down by 86K year over year. The report also found that thanks to targeted efforts by state agencies and access organizations, completion gaps are narrowing more among low-income populations than any other. It also showed demographic gaps shrinking faster in states with mandatory FAFSA graduation requirements. But even in the best-case scenario, completion rates will not be able to catch up to last year’s; the report predicts the final number of finished FAFSAs will be 4.8 percent lower than last year.” (link)
