Outgoing Golden Hurricane AD Rick Dickson: "I am deeply grateful that I can wrap up my career as a collegiate athletics director by announcing this important gift, which will leave UTulsa Athletics on sound financial footing for generations to come. There is no way to thank these donors enough for their leadership, generosity, and commitment to our shared alma mater." (link)

Now-official Ohio State AD Ross Bjork tells The Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman that the transition period in Columbus “was a great opportunity to get to know the people and the place without worrying about the day-to-day operations.” Still, he adds, OSU “is a massive place. You can’t bite it off in four months. It’s going to take however long that takes to continue to learn.” Bjork also acknowledges he’s coming in at a time when revenue generation is particularly important. To that end, one idea Bjork has suggested is the addition of a premium services club at Ohio Stadium that could be open throughout the year. The Buckeyes are also selling tickets to four football practices during preseason training camp in August, and Bjork notes: “Every piece has to be looked at. How do you monetize that?” Now that he’s formally in the AD chair, Bjork plans to begin meeting individually with donors after being mostly limited to prearranged events during the transition period. “The role of the modern-day athletic director, and even 20 years ago, has always been relationship building, being visible in the community, not because you’re the most important person, but because they need to hear from leadership.” In addition to sharing revenue, Bjork notes the football facility needs an upgrade. The cost for the project is undetermined, but Bjork estimates it will be $150-200M and adds: “We want to go fast. We want to capture momentum we have right now. We want to go through the summer and fall and have these really high-level conversations with our lead gift prospects. We’re teeing all of that up right now.” (link)

Utah State has informed Football HC Blake Anderson of its intention to part ways “for actions taken in spring 2023. These actions violated both his employment agreement and university policy. Under his employment agreement Coach Anderson will have 14 days to respond.” USU also notes that “this decision comes after a thorough external review of alleged noncompliance with university policies that implement Title IX, which require full and timely reporting of disclosures of sexual misconduct — including domestic violence — and prohibit employees from investigating disclosures of sexual misconduct themselves.” AVP/Deputy AD of External Affairs Jerry Bovee and Aggies Football Director of Player Development & Community Austin Albrecht have also been dismissed for “violations of university policies related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failures of professional responsibilities. Consistent with Utah’s public records laws and USU policies, the university is not able to release any additional information until all opportunities to respond and/or appeal have expired, which is a minimum of 14 days.” (link)

North Carolina Business Court Chief Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III heard roughly an hour of arguments from Clemson and the ACC in their ongoing legal dispute this morning and committed to issuing rulings on Clemson’s motion to dismiss and Clemson’s motion to stay the ACC’s lawsuit by late next week. The State’s Chapel Fowler notes there is “currently a July 12 hearing set at the Pickens County Courthouse on the ACC’s motions to dismiss and stay that case as the defendant (the same motions Clemson made for the ACC’s suit in Charlotte, in which the university is the defendant). … Legal experts polled by The State and other media outlets have found more credibility in the ACC’s argument, and the general sense is that the dueling lawsuits between the ACC and Clemson will eventually be heard (and perhaps consolidated into one case) in Charlotte. Bledsoe’s pending rulings will be a test of that theory.” (link)

Boise State law professor Sam C. Ehrlich issues a correction on his reporting that CLC was a party in a recently filed lawsuit by several former men’s basketball players, including former Kansas standouts Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins. “The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is NOT involved in this case. I had assumed based on the NC State lawsuit that they'd be involved in some way, but they were apparently dismissed from the NC State lawsuit as well. So my apologies to CLC for that error.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown takes a look at how the WAC can rebuild and reports that “university presidents and athletic leadership approached the league office about creating a document that would ask members to make at least a two-year commitment to the conference. The document calls for an increase in exit fees for anybody that leaves during that period, while also increasing financial distributions to each WAC member institution. … The new distributions, I’m told, include close to $100K for each school to make investments in instant replay technology and to improve their local broadcast quality, as well as low-six-figure distributions for ‘discretionary spending’ and to help offset decreases in NCAA distributions as a result of the House settlement.” Brown also reports that WAC officials informed UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin that league bylaws required a $2M exit fee penalty and because “Seattle and Grand Canyon gave advanced notice, their exit fee penalty is only $1M each, I’m told. That gives the league a $4M windfall now, with additional money later from Seattle and GCU.” Geography and institutional alignment are also factors keeping the WAC together for now, and Brown notes that while realignment is likely not finished in the West (particularly once Oregon State and Washington State make their long-term maneuver), the WAC still has a pulse. “And the first step to living to fight another day is living, after all.” (link)

Toledo is adding women’s rowing with competition set to begin in the fall of 2025. Rockets AD Bryan Blair notes that no resources will be reallocated from any other UT sport and infrastructure and start-up costs will be “relatively low.” The roster is expected to have 50-60 student-athletes and the program will likely hire a coach sometime in 2024. (link); Meanwhile, Extra Points’ Matt Brown adds: “Word in my neck of the woods is that Toledo won't be the last MAC team to launch a new program in the near future.” (link)

Montana State will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bobcat Indoor Athletic Center on July 16. The Bobcat IAC will contain 100 yards of FieldTurf encompassed by a six-lane 300-meter oval track. The north end of the facility features the building's main entrance, a meeting room and restrooms. Inside the pre-engineered metal building supported by steel beams, a full drop curtain surrounding the football turf allows for a safe environment for multiple simultaneous sporting activities. Additionally, the track oval will be a full-pour polyurethane surface composed of BSS 1000 encapsulated texture surface, the same as the program's outdoor track, and will be installed by the Beynon Sports track surfacing company. The facility features two competition throwing rings, an approach apron for the high jump, and runways and pits for the pole vault, long jump, and triple jump. The IAC location displaces the current outdoor track hammer and discus throwing area, which will be relocated south of the outdoor track. A walkway connecting the current seating area to the new outdoor throwing areas will also be constructed. (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor tells the Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao that as the House settlement continues to play out “coaches are coming to me on a regular basis asking, ‘What are we doing? What’s it look like? And, to give them a concrete answer, right now, I just don’t have one. We’re looking at everything from a financial perspective. We’re talking to our collective. What’s that look like in the future? Do those dollars ultimately come in house? Do we control them? Do we create a third-party marketing group to manage it? I mean, all these things are part of the conversation. And, we’re just now kind of working through the details of each of those options.” Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard adds: “Fundamentally, our goal is not to eliminate opportunities. Those opportunities are probably going to have to look different going forward, because there’s not unlimited resources. And it’s critical that football and basketball are healthy because football and men’s basketball fund 90 to 95% of what we do in college athletics.” Drew Watson, who serves as Director of Development for the Utah-focused Crimson Collective, tells Batacao that everything is on the table. “We want to hit that [$22M] cap. If we can get a jump start on it, we want to leave them in the best-case scenario. What will happen is either the collective employees could go up to the university and help fundraise there, but a lot of these universities are going to need third-party groups to come in and help fill in the gaps, right? And so the Garff Family (head of the Crimson Collective) down here, they’re already working on strategies to help fill in those gaps, and they want us involved.” More. (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir reflects on the Knights’ first season in the Big 12 and tells the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel: “It was an overall solid season for the first year in the Big 12 and we learned a lot. I had a decent idea since I worked in the Big 12 twice. Some of our sports were a little stronger than the others, but it was pretty solid overall. … We were one of only three schools in the new Big 12 whose top three revenue-generating sports went to the postseason.” Murschel points out that Mission XII, the athletic department’s fundraising arm for its move to the Big 12, has helped increase the operating budget from $72M in 2022 to $90M this fiscal year. “The most significant gain, however, has been made in facility upgrades, particularly the multi-phase football campus project, with the cornerstone being the nearly $90M renovation to the Roth Tower connected to the football stadium.” Mohajir adds: “This tower will be the best piece of real estate we have right now. This will help us generate even more resources because of the funding model.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joins the Sitdown Series to discuss the challenges facing the department, the opportunities present in activating the Valley, the outlook on several key programs, what college sports may look like soon and more. Rossini says since taking over, “we’ve really been refining our leadership team, really making some tweaks to responsibilities in the department, making sure that everybody understands there's an opportunity for us to make departmental decisions across multiple sports and not have 26 independent sports that may be wearing the same uniform but are making decisions in a silo. And so really elevating and tweaking throughout the administrative part of Sun Devil Athletics just so we're positioned in a moment that resources are really, really important the way that college sports is moving. The cost of doing business is changing and so really making sure that we have the right team in place to go create new opportunities to create resources and revenue that we can bring back in and invest into our sports teams.” Rossini says he doesn’t envision football breaking away on its own in the near term. “I don't see that happening out the gate. I do think we're looking at a couple years of let's stabilize what conference realignment looks like. Maybe that's not done, but for the most part I do think the most significant changes are now complete. We really want to enter the Big 12 with readiness. I've been focused on that. What happens down the road, I'm sure we're not done with changes in totality but not a conversation that I’ve been a part of or aware of.” Full podcast. (link)

Several former men’s college basketball players have filed a lawsuit arguing that the NCAA and CLC have violated their right of publicity by continuing to use their NIL for commercial purposes. Plaintiffs include former Kansas standouts Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins, former Connecticut standout Ryan Boatright and members of the 1997, 2008, 2011 and 2014 NCAA champion teams. They allege Turner Sports Interactive has used videos such as Chalmers’ game-tying three-pointer against Memphis in 2008 “for commercial purposes in live television broadcasts, advertisements, online videos, and other forms of media.” Boise State law professor Sam C. Ehrlich: “It should definitely be interesting to see how these cases turn out. It could be a massive source of liability for the NCAA and CLC moving forward.” (link); Full complaint. (link)

Former TCU Men’s Golf HC Bill Montigel has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against the university in which he alleges his contract was not renewed in the spring of 2023 because he was 68 years old. The suit also argues that Horned Frogs AD Jeremiah Donati was retaliatory against Montigel, and endorsed “an ‘Animal House’ atmosphere.” From the suit: “At the NCAA basketball tournament in Denver in March of 2023, a Frog Club fundraiser was accused of raping a female co-worker who woke up in his hotel bed not knowing how she got there. She reported the incident to the Colorado Police. Both Donati and (TCU Assoc. AD for Special Projects) Michael Levy were present at the Denver tournament when this improper sexual harassment occurred.” Also: “A leader in the athletic department — who was married — engaged in sexual relations with the wife of a highly successful TCU coach, leading to that coach leaving TCU.” The suit further alleges that a “senior athletic department official was caught in a press box in a compromising position with a female who was senior associate athletic director of student services.” Neither Donati nor a spokesperson for the athletic department responded to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s requests for comment. The NCAA is in discussions with USA Gymnastics about potentially overhauling the collegiate men’s gymnastics championships. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams reports the talks are “part of a pilot program run through Team USA aimed at preserving the critical pipeline between college sports and the Olympics. Stakeholders on both sides are seeking more visibility and more financial sustainability for men’s gymnastics, a model that could eventually be replicated with other sports threatened by changes underway across college athletics.” Team USA Chief of Sport and Athlete Services Rocky Harris: “I want [national governing body] leaders to have a seat at the table to help develop sports at the college level. That’s important because they know the sports better than anyone else. They know what works, what doesn’t, how you can take advantage, how you can commercialize it.” Novy-Williams also reports that men’s gymnastics is one of a handful of sports that the Team USA College Sports Sustainability Think Tank’s sports management pilot has focused on. “It’s also worked with track & field and fencing. The hope, among people in both the NCAA and Olympic movements, is that it can be a framework for other sports to foster more collaboration between college programs and national governing bodies (NGBs).” NCAA Managing Director of Championships and Alliances Liz Suscha: “Where there have previously been informal connections between coaches groups and an NGB, or coaches groups and the NCAA, we’ve now got a more committed way to talk to each other. We’re all committed to figuring out how to get things done. What we’re getting out of these partnerships today will look completely different in five or six years if we keep this up.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro discusses a number of topics, including the important role he views Pat McAfee playing moving forward. “We are in a battle for people's time, and as a part of that, we are trying to attract a younger audience. Pat does just that. He is authentic, and he resonates with younger people. That is confirmed by our research; we see it consistently that he is moving the needle. We knew licensing Pat’s show would make some people uncomfortable, and as we head on this path and on this journey with 'The Pat McAfee Show,' there are going to be issues, and we address those issues as they come and as they arise, and we address them internally.” Pitaro remains confident in the future of ESPN Bet and posits that “to say we’re in the first inning of ESPN Bet would be a significant understatement. We’ve done a good job together creating new users for the platform. … The industry has a tendency of looking at market share, and we have a significant path ahead of us in terms of FanDuel and DraftKings. They have a huge head start. They’re the leaders. Just like every day I used to wake up and try to beat my competitor, every day we wake up and we have a target, which is the next in line in terms of market share.” Pitaro on the upcoming ESPN streaming platform: “It is all hands on deck – from a product and tech perspective – to be able to deliver this in a way that it best represents the ESPN brand. We've been investing in the direct-to-consumer space on the sports side of the Walt Disney Company since April of 2018. We have a pretty large head start here.” (link)
