AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti during a visit to UTSA talked about the conference’s position post-House: “The reality is our role is to break some glass. Collegiate athletics has changed. It’s not what it was 10 years ago. People have to think differently about the industry in order to try to create more resources, so the institutions can deliver on a great experience. … Our job at the conference is to try to get creative and develop new resources to give institutions a chance to get creative, and do more, and recruit more effectively, and retain student-athletes for a longer period of time.” Pernetti also talked about private equity and said the “upside for the conference and institutions is you get an immediate infusion of capital that you can deploy to de-stress coaches in NIL, put more into collectives, facilities, and the things you want to accelerate that maybe you schedule over years, depending on how your revenue is inbound. This whole thing about private equity comes in and they run your business and tell you what to do, that’s not true. If you pick the right partner.” Pernetti went on to say discussions are ongoing regarding whether the league will set its own cap on revenue-sharing and noted of a potential Group of 5 football playoff: “This conference worked hard to be in the CFP structure, and we’ll work hard in the future to stay there and expand our access. But beyond that, there are opportunities. There’s room for more.” (link); Pernetti on the House settlement writ large: “Our conference gets it. It’s like, look, it is what it is, we're moving forward, let's try to understand what we're going to be impacted by and let's figure out ways to be able to manage it. And even in the conference office we're trying to figure out ways based on revenues inbound and what we can do to try to soften the blow on the campuses. I think that will start to play itself out over the next couple of months.” (link)

Chelsea FC Co-Owner/Chairman Todd Boehly, who is also CEO of holding company Eldridge Industries, says he is exploring how to reorganize college sports into one league with as many as 12 divisions and says: “In a perfect world, you have 70 to 85 teams; you have a relegation element to it where the other teams can come up to compete; and you really start to think about how do you make it truly national. … I don’t see how the NCAA is going to deal with NIL, transfer portal, collective bargaining without a proposition that is much more complete.” Boehly also commented on the private-credit boom, saying his firm wants to be “all things credit,” adding: “I don’t think that the boom in private credit all of a sudden suggests that private credit is a bad asset class. … [Business development companies] are a lot less levered than banks.” One secret of credit, Boehly also notes, is that as long as the borrower is worth more than the loan, creditors are going to get their money back. The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel reports the additional $16.8M in conference distributions UCF is set to begin receiving in 2025-26 will be “earmarked for increases in operational costs, including a minimum $10M placeholder for revenue sharing and additional costs associated with the new NCAA model.” Knights AD Terry Mohajir emphasizes the department will do all it can not to cut sports. “Our school will do everything we can to maintain our sports and scholarships and do whatever we can to fund them at the maximum level. That’s our goal.” Mohajir says of roster limits: “My understanding from the direction that it’s going is your roster maximums are going to dictate your scholarship funding models. My hope and wish is that we don’t penalize the sports that generate the lion’s share of the dollars.” He also disagrees with those who cite the NFL’s 53-man roster as a reason putting similar caps in college could work. “That’s a failing argument. The NFL is not a 53-man roster. It’s an infinite roster. They can get players anytime, any place. If you lose a player, you can get one off of waivers. They have to maintain a certain roster. We learned from the COVID [season] that if you lose players to sickness or injury, you can lose whole position groups. But we’ll learn to adapt.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft Q&As with Blue White Illustrated’s Nate Bauer and says of the $700M renovation to Beaver Stadium: “I know everyone sees that number. Construction here in Happy Valley is not cheap. So I’ve been blown away as we’ve done projects just because of where we are located. So let’s put that there. I also think we’re trying to fix as much as we humanly (can). All the circulation issues. We’ve got to fix the way that game day – meaning concessions, bathrooms, all of those things that our fans deserve. And then we also have to pay for it. We don’t have the premium opportunities that…people really want. And with a building this large, if you do it right, you can accommodate all of our fans and all that they want. I think it attracts all of those elements.” Kraft also talks about the shifting NIL landscape: “I’m as confident and as excited as I’ve ever been in this world moving forward. It is allowing us the opportunity – and I’ve not been shy about saying this – I do not like, I did not like, the fact that we could not be involved with our student-athletes and helping them. It is now in essence coming in-house. We now can help.” Kraft on the White Out and whether it gets the same protections as other major college football games from networks looking to maximize their revenue: “I’m a firm believer in the night game. I’ve heard enough. I’ve watched two, Iowa and Minnesota. You want your best game. But there is a point to it. That Fox window is so strong for Fox. So look, this is where the finesse of the whole thing comes in. I’m not a very finesse guy. But, I do think you always want that. You want that atmosphere.” (link)

Nicholls State AD Jonathan Terrell talks about the state of the athletic program and says: “We talk about it being some of the best four years of Nicholls Athletics right now, and we talk about right now. I mean, I think that's the biggest part. People always go, ‘Man, how do you do it?’ I do it with people. I’ll never stop saying that. We have an athletic department that runs with about nine folks, and I can't do my job without all of them. So, again the ability that [President Jay Clune] instills to let us do what we need to do to be successful, I think that's so important, but also the buy-in from everybody. We talk about culture, and that’s a word that everybody talks about. We talk about family and everybody talks about what it is to be [family]. We are. That's not a joke. Those head coaches are always helping each other, they're not fighting. We talk about ‘don't compare, just compete.’ We're not like everybody else but our difference is good so we can play, we compete so we can continue to win championships.” (link)

Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy talks about how growing up on a farm prepares one for a life in athletics: “It teaches the same values that we have here in the Central Valley: hard work, determination, grit, problem-solving, you operate a little bit with a chip on your shoulder. I think all those attributes that I learned at a very young age from my parents on a dairy farm are still instilled in me today. None of us forget where we come from, and the values that we're taught at a young age. It’s important to me and that's how we're going to operate as an athletic department.” Klassy says he’s unsure there are necessarily needs that must be addressed immediately but acknowledges the “football stadium is always going to be a hot topic here, and it’s not like we’re not going to address it. I just need to make sure we have a plan in place to address it and it’s one that we can get across the finish line. So, no bold statements today, but I can tell you it’s on my list of items to take action on.” More from Klassy. (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers chronicles the events that led to former Texas A&M Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle’s decision to leave for Texas and the Aggies’ process of promoting Baseball AC Michael Earley to HC. Rogers notes that Schlossnagle was on the selection committee for Texas A&M’s new AD but preferred Army West Point AD Mike Buddie over then-Nebraska AD Trev Alberts. “In terms of the actual timeline around his hiring at Texas, sources on the A&M side began to do some serious digging when Schlossnagle did not show up for a ballpark planning meeting a couple of days before his team left for the College World Series. At least two high-ranking A&M officials told D1Baseball before the CWS that their radar went up in a big way when that occurred because Schloss had been so heavily involved in the ballpark process.” More. Charlotte Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Ragean Hill sits down with Collegiate Sports Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention to share her best networking and mentorship advice, describe what she believes is the "Heisman Trophy" for administrators, and reflect on her experience in the NCAA's Pathways Program and other related leadership training programs. Hill also talks about the value of compartmentalizing her work from her personal life and being a woman working in football. Hill: "For some of us, it's just how we carry ourselves in a room. … You've got to almost be fearless at times, even though you may be freaking out on the back end in a male-dominated space, it’s just holding it together in that room while you’re in there, and then it gets easier." Hill adds: “I’ve always told my coaches I work with you, I don’t work for you. As long as we have that understanding, we will go very far and I will do everything in my power with the utmost Integrity to get you where you want to with your student-athletes. But we do have to have a level of respect in order to do that.” More from The Career Hustle on Connect. (link)

Middle Tennessee State’s Student-Athlete Performance Center is on track to be finished by the start of the 2025 football season, and Assoc. AD for Equipment and Capital Projects Larry Maples notes fans can expect to see the building change game-to-game when they attend football games at Floyd Stadium this fall. If all goes to plan, the building will be "100% dried in" by the end of the season, allowing construction work to accelerate in the interior of the building. The Blue Raiders also expect to have a new 34’x60’ Daktronics video board installed at Floyd Stadium in time for the start of this season. Additionally, MTSU's new broadcast control room, currently being built in the southeast corner of the Murphy Center's concourse level, is on pace to be operational by the time hoops season starts. Asst. AD for Broadcast Technology and Gameday Operations Nathan Wallach says the new technology that will come with the control room will enable fans to really notice the upgrades to both the basketball and football video boards, as the modern system will grant MTSU the ability to use cameras with greater clarity, have more channels of replay available and be able to unlock more power to do in-game fan engagement, such as showing split-screen feeds. On3 Founder/CEO Shannon Terry posts on X that “~90% of NIL $ for CFB is Roster Value, ie ‘Pay-for-play.’ Early in the process, On3 recognized this before everyone else and it drove the foundation of value of the On3 NIL Valuation. According to athletes, their families and school and collective leaders, the NIL Valuation has been a key resource in determining value and deals for Roster Value. In order to continue to help move toward an efficient market so that both sides (athletes and schools/collectives) have equal access to the data, we have decided to make the NIL Valuation publicly available on the Athlete's NIL Profile (for now). Our team's constant communication with athletes, agents, schools, coaches and collectives, their ability to challenge value, has played a key role in helping to set the market. We are striving to make the On3 NIL Valuation more accurate and more accessible to all parties.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione gets the profile treatment from On3’s Andrew Graham. Castiglione, who has led the Sooners since July 1998, shares what he’d like things to look like when he eventually retires: “I hope when the time comes that I leave Oklahoma in the best position possible. That’s my dream, to leave Oklahoma with an upward trajectory that just greatness is still up on the ladder. We’re doing great but we’re continuing to climb and whoever I get to hand it off to, they continue to take it even farther. But that you can come back and be part of what’s developed and the relationships that are here, those aren’t going to go away, whether it’s the coaches, the former athletes, actually you’re really never a former athlete, you’re just an athlete.” When the time does come, Castiglione hopes the mountains and the beach are both readily accessible. Ole Miss AD Keith Carter indicates the Rebels will have corporate logos around the 25-yard line of its football field as soon as this coming season in an effort to generate more revenue: “I don’t think we want to become NASCAR and have logos everywhere, on our foreheads, but we’re definitely looking at the on-field logos, what that’s going to look like this year. I would say there’s going to be some version of that this year by the time we get to football season. We’re not taking away the Ole Miss script in the middle. We know that has to be there. We are looking more at the hash marks and potentially some type of blended logo with the Ole Miss script if we can make it look appropriate — potentially blended at the 50-yard line. We’ll see. Don’t get too upset yet. [...] We have to find new revenue streams. If we’re going to have our seat at the table in the SEC with the big dogs and have our opportunities in the CFP and NCAA Basketball Tournament, we have to do the rev share and have to build revenue.” Carter also notes the significant exposure value of jersey patches, and says there’s “a lot of potential for that” once the SEC approves the opportunity. More on SMU’s growth trajectory as it enters the ACC, this time with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. Mustangs AD Rick Hart: “We were not going to come in and just hang out until the money came. Not only was [the early fundraising success] a validating moment for us and SMU and a powerful statement, but we very quickly were able to demonstrate to [the ACC] that we meant what we said and that we’re going to find other ways to compete. That’s the expectation.” Hart also touches on the possibility of the ACC’s Grant of Rights being challenged: “Even if that gets disrupted or it doesn’t look exactly the same [in the future], the reality of it is I and our community believe that we’re part of the group now. There’s a sense that even if there’s change, I feel very positive about SMU’s ability to continue to have access to the highest level of competition.” (link)

TCU is not selling single-game tickets for their Homecoming contest against Texas Tech and Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt took to X to express his opinion on that matter: “Red Raider Nation, at Texas Tech our season tickets are sold out. Single game tickets (for ALL 7 home games) are going at a record pace. Hey, @JDonati_TCU, we can fill your stadium too if you’ll let us. Congrats on following us on revenue sharing at the highest level too.” Horned Frogs AD Jeremiah Donati quips in reply: “Plenty of good bars and restaurants around Fort Worth for them to watch. The stadium will be purple.” (link)

Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade joins the On the Fly podcast to discuss several topics, including the difficulty of scheduling basketball games against Power 4 teams: “I think for the good of the game, somehow some way, we need to put some criteria into the formula of how teams get selected at large into the NCAA championship because, as you know, getting into the tournament, that's the golden goose, that's where everybody wants to be. And that's where your institutions can really flourish. So, right now there's no incentive for any of the teams in the Power 4 conferences to play anyone outside of their conference, and they're getting credit for having even less than .500 records within their league and still getting access to the championship. So, I do think something has to be made, some guideline or some rule that would actually give incentives to the Power 4 to get out there on the road – or, at least, our teams are willing to go to their campuses. You know, we'll play anywhere, anytime, anyplace.” McGlade says of the impact of NIL on coaches: “I can see the stress level on their face because they’re out every single day and they’re not raising money for any of the infrastructure on their university campuses. They’re trying to get money into the collective so the collective can then turn around and pay some of their players that they have no guarantee are even going to stay longer than seven months. It’s a lot of stress, it’s a lot of pressure on the coaches.” More. (link)

The Fresno Bee’s Robert Kuwada outlines what new Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy needs to prioritize: 1) Basketball ticket revenue (“Fresno State averaged just 3,471 tickets last basketball season, as many as 6,000 just once in the past six years and winning hasn’t made much of a difference. The Bulldogs won 20-plus games in 2021-’22 and 2018-’19 under former coach Justin Hutson and averaged 4,183 and 5,807, respectively.”); 2) Student fees (“Fresno State could add a $150 fee per semester and, based on 2023 tuition and mandatory fees in the CSU, it still would rank as the eighth most affordable school in the 23-campus system. [...] The athletics department could bank around $7 million in additional revenue through student fees, and be more competitive with its CSU and conference peers.”); and, 3) The Adidas partnership (“Fresno State has two years remaining on its apparel contract with adidas, which is worth an average of $1.275 million per year. [...] The contract runs through the end of May in 2026, but under terms adidas has rights of first dealing and first refusal between April 1 and June 30 in 2025.”) (link)

The Texas A&M Baseball HC search continues, but the hire won’t be Oklahoma skipper Skip Johnson as D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers remarks: “Skip Johnson will stay put in Norman as he is expected to sign a new deal with the #Sooners sometime today. Skip was most definitely in the mix, but #Aggies appear to be zeroing in on three guys.” (link)

Former Florida women’s track student-athlete Parker Valby is racing at this week’s Olympic trials in her Gators uniform. Despite having turned pro, Valby has yet to sign an endorsement deal, and Runner’s World Sarah Lorge Butler notes it is likely because Valby’s NIL deal with Nike included a clause giving the Swoosh the first right of refusal of her services as a pro. Typically, Butler observes that “brands aren’t using the athletes they sign for much marketing while they’re still in college,” and “it would seem the primary reason they’re signing them to NIL deals is to get a jump on them for their pro careers.” Therefore, Butler notes it’s likely the student-athletes aren’t maximizing what they could get after college in part because “some brands hesitate to make a competing contract offer if they know another company has the right of first refusal.” Washington State professor Cara Hawkins-Jedlicka tells Butler: “As NIL opportunities grow, brands will ask for more. Athletes need to think carefully about what’s best for them, both now and in the future. As legal challenges arise and guidelines change, recent grads and current college athletes are stepping into unfamiliar territory. They’re navigating a landscape that’s reshaping itself even as they move through it, trying to find the best way forward for their careers.” (link)

MoffettNathanson Senior Managing Director Michael Nathanson this week wrote in a report that we are in the third act of the streaming wars, and “from the leagues’ perspectives, there is a delicate balance between reach (e.g., NFL on broadcast TV) and immediate money (e.g., MLS on Apple TV). In order to stay relevant and grow the game, it is in the best interest of sports leagues to maximize eyeballs. … Going forward, as technology improves and latency comes down, streaming will become a more suitable home for sports than it is today. In addition, games/matches from smaller leagues may start to pop up on sports betting apps, but there isn’t an expectation that betting operators will be the primary rights holders for top-tier leagues anytime soon.” Puck’s John Ourand adds: “As readers of The Varsity know well, legacy media companies see live sports as their last chance to save the lucrative cable bundle, setting up a competition for sports rights which Nathanson believes will increasingly be dominated by the streamers.” (link)

JWS has also secured an ongoing commitment from its first investor, Playfly Sports, for support services. “The capital will largely be used to support a talent-led operation.
