New South Dakota Mines AD David Crum was introduced Friday. On his vision for the Hardrockers: “In the end, we want to make sure we continue to have academic excellence. We want to perform well in their respective sports. We want to win and we will. We want to make sure we win the right way. And in the end, we really want to make sure that we have the student athlete development. The life skills around that. So we want to make sure we perform in the classrooms, on the field and on the court and make great human beings of our student athletes. So they can go forth into society.” On facilities, the King Center is actively under construction and Crum states the O'Harra Stadium will be the first facility evaluated for improvements. Emporia State AD David Spafford chats with WIBW and said of the growth of the Hornets: “I feel and the rest of us here, feel that we’ve been able to put our programs and our evaluation of what programs will help meet those needs of our local economy or regionally economy and putting that into play. GAC Commissioner Will Prewitt sits down with Midwest Sports Net’s Joey McWilliams to discuss a number of topics including realignment. As one of two conferences that have not lost a member since 2015 (the other being the SSC), Prewitt notes the league is happy at 12 members. The GAC’s sport sponsorship requirements of Football, Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball and Softball are the biggest piece when the conference considers expansion. On being the only commissioner for the GAC: “ I think it's a positive and it's something I take incredible ownership in. It's not just a job. I really care deeply about our 12 member schools and the coaches and student-athletes that participate in our league and the big thing where it can be a little bit of a drawback quite honestly is we've been blessed that we've had really incredibly low staff turnover. I've only had two sports information directors. I've only had two compliance coordinators. I've only had one HR and financial person so you can get into a little bit too much of a ‘Hey this is how we've always done things,’ but I think that's where when people come from other conferences, asking, ‘Hey how do you do this in your league before?’ I have conversations with friends that have moved on to other jobs and ask ‘Hey how do you guys do this in your league.’” (link)

Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox examines how the fraught FAFSA rollout has impacted Lindenwood (DI) and notes that last December, the university “cut 10 of its 50 sports programs and eliminated nine nonathletic staff positions as part of a budgetary ‘rebalancing,’ as the university called it. In order to get through the fiscal year without additional cuts, the small private college in St. Charles, Mo., needed tuition revenue to hold steady. Instead…in Missouri, where the vast majority of Lindenwood students come from, only 41% of high school seniors had completed the FAFSA as of June 14—one of the lowest rates in the country, and down 12% from last year.” Meanwhile, Lindenwood is projecting a 12% enrollment dip this fall and has announced it is cutting its budget by 10% with more layoffs on the way. President John Porter: “We would not have cut to the degree that we did had it not been for what we’re seeing with FAFSA. I don’t want to put all the blame there, but it certainly caused us to take a step back and reassess our costs.” There is a silver lining, however, as Porter tells Knox the FAFSA issues exposed some of the school’s larger strategic problems and expedited plans to become leaner and increase student aid. “We’re not going to wait until August and cross our fingers hoping for the best … If we do hit the worst-case scenario, these measures allow us to operate with margins. If other universities aren’t planning this way, and are just hoping to squeak by and see what happens, I’d say that’s a bad philosophy.” (link)

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is calling for warning labels on social media platforms, writing in a New York Times op-ed that “the mental health crisis among young people is an emergency – and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours. Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.” Therefore, “it is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.” Murthy asserts that social media companies should be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public and allow independent safety audits. “Schools should ensure that classroom learning and social time are phone-free experiences. Parents, too, should create phone-free zones around bedtime, meals and social gatherings to safeguard their kids’ sleep and real-life connections — both of which have direct effects on mental health. And they should wait until after middle school to allow their kids access to social media.” Murthy concludes: “The moral test of any society is how well it protects its children. … We have the expertise, resources and tools to make social media safe for our kids. Now is the time to summon the will to act. Our children’s well-being is at stake.” (link)
