Ohio State President Ted Carter is confident the athletics department will generate the revenue it needs to cover looming revenue increases following the House settlement. “We've just got to make sure that we maintain, even with this revenue-share model, that we can do everything that we can to be self-sufficient. This program has been self-sufficient, and we anticipate it will be self-sufficient going forward. And I would argue if you look across the entire landscape of college football, you're going to find only maybe three to five programs that are going to be able to say that in the next model.” Carter also notes that “we made one big, bold statement, and that is we're going to maintain 36 Division I sports. I watched during COVID-19 what schools like William & Mary and Stanford went through. Even in the state of Nebraska, which happened before I got there, the University of Nebraska at Omaha cut football and wrestling at the Division II level to move into the Summit League. Heavily criticized at the time. And as I've watched the college landscape and think about what it means to maintain these sports, it's important once you get them to do everything you can to hold on to them. You don't want to lose that. It's too important to the student-athlete. So we've made a declarative statement that we're going to hold on to that.” Carter on student-athlete employment: “We've got to maintain the student-athlete part. What has to be the attraction for somebody to come and wear a jersey for Ohio State still has to be to get a degree here. And we've been really, really successful at that. I've enjoyed that at every academic institution I've been. Division I athletes graduate at a higher rate than anybody else. We have the same thing here. … Those are things that we should be proud of, and we should make sure that we don't lose that.” (link)

Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle at the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss his new role, the importance of alignment with a president and what to expect from the Bulldogs in regards to creativity in fundraising and expanding the brand. Ivey also talks about protecting opportunities for non-revenue generating sports in the wake of the House settlement. When it comes to protecting non-revenue sports, Ivey says: “I'm a firm believer in the educational benefits and values of the athletics department and athletic opportunities. So, what are we doing to create and instill those opportunities and protect those opportunities for everyone, whether that's a football player or a bowling or a tennis student-athlete? What are we doing to protect those opportunities? So I think those things are going to be important to us…but again, it’s going to be looking at it from that standpoint of how do you manage all those wants and needs across the board – and it’s nothing that we probably haven’t been doing before, but it’s really more hyper-focused now than it ever has been.” Full interview on Connect. UT Arlington AD Jon Fagg joins the Discovering the Maverick Factor podcast to discuss what’s going on within the UTA athletic department, developments in the WAC and more. Fagg notes that conference realignment “hadn't touched us for a little while being in the Sun Belt for 10 years. Now it has. We're committed to the WAC, we're trying to be leaders. I view UTA as the flagship institution of the WAC, and so we want to take that leadership role. [UTA President Jennifer Evans-Cowley] shares that, and we're working closely with the conference office and other WAC members to stabilize and then expand the conference.” Fagg also comments on being located so close to the conference headquarters: “It really is important. I've been at different places – at NC State I was about an hour from the ACC office and you could just get more personal service because if you wanted to be at the conference office, you could. Same thing here. I can be at the conference office in 10 minutes. I did it two weeks ago because Commissioner Thornton and I were talking on the phone about something and I said, ‘Hey, I'll tell you what, why don’t I just pop up there and we can sit down and visit in person. And we did and it's incredibly helpful.” Full podcast. (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell inked a five-year contract extension back in May, according to CollegeAD, which notes the contract began on June 22 and runs through June 21, 2029. Sell will earn more than $334K in the contract’s first year and receive any raises implemented through statewide salary increases. Sell is also guaranteed at least $15K in supplemental income each year and is eligible for academic- and athletic-related bonuses ranging from $300 to $5K. Should SDSU terminate the contract without cause, Sell would be owed the remainder of his salary for the duration of the contract. If Sell leaves within the first three years, he would owe SDSU $100K. There is no buyout for the final two years. (link)

After implementing changes to its ticket pricing structure, North Texas saw its revenue from tickets and fees increase and experienced an uptick in attendance in multiple sports, including men’s and women’s basketball; however, the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito notes the “downside was a drop in football attendance during a challenging season.” Mean Green AD Jared Mosley: “Nobody likes an increase, but at the end of the day, we’re still in the bottom third when it comes to ticket prices and per-seat obligations in both football and basketball in the American [Athletic Conference]. Our intent is not to just overnight get there, but like everything else, as our teams improve and succeed, we’re going to have to continue to elevate. We comp everything we do with where we are in the American.” Vito reports UNT’s overall ticket and fee revenue for regular-season home games jumped nearly $300K to $1.8M in 2023-24 school year, and the “increase was due largely to a 49% increase in men’s basketball ticket revenue, which rose to a program-record $473,153. The Mean Green drew 4,132 fans per home game, a 14.5% increase over last season, on their way to a third straight appearance in the [NIT].” Women’s basketball attendance increased 15.2% to 1,693, while football season-ticket revenue increased $30K to $1.1M despite home attendance falling 6.6% to 17,761 fans per game. The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee tabled legislative proposals regarding preseason practice scrimmages and exhibition games, as well as an item focused on multiple-team events including the criteria that only one team per conference may participate in the same event. Committee members cited variables that need more vetting, including potential inconsistencies in the application of the proposed rule that would allow teams to play two preseason exhibition games against DI opponents. A bylaw remains in place that permits a men's basketball team to play in up to two closed preseason practice scrimmages or exhibition contests — or a combination of the two — against a non-I school. Other reasons for tabling the proposal include ongoing challenges associated with regular-season scheduling and differing landscapes in men's and women's basketball that have created challenges in determining the appropriate criteria for MTE legislation. A paper published in the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport authored by Troy researchers Chris Corr and Christer Atwater, Texas A&M researcher Calvin Nite and Alabama researcher Trevor Bopp analyzes the perception of Black Power 4 football coaches as recruiters. While Black coaches comprise over 50% of ACs in the P4, just 12% of HCs are Black. Corr, et al. note that “considering 77% of football recruits signed by Autonomy Conference programs were Black in 2019 and 2020, the stereotypical view that Black coaches can more aptly recruit Black players is relatively commonplace. In fact, recent research has illustrated that Autonomy Conference football coaches and recruits are ‘matched’ according to their racial composition. Among 2019 and 2020 Autonomy Conference football recruiting classes, 80% of White players had a White coach listed as their primary recruiter on 247Sports. … Considering many of the established recruiting hotbeds preside in major metropolitan areas with high Black population densities compared to the national average, Black position coaches are integral to the signing of the top-rated Black football recruits. Herein lies the tremendous value generated by Black coaches in Autonomy Conference football. From a value proposition standpoint, Black coaches are recruiting top-rated Black talent that is directly correlated to winning college football games. Given position coaches shoulder the bulk of recruiting responsibilities, what incentive is there for predominantly White head coaches to promote Black coaches to coordinator positions that inherently occupy less recruiting responsibilities? As coordinator is a key rung on the proverbial coaching ladder, recruiting ability exists as a possible explanation for Black coaches being passed up by their White counterparts for promotional advancement.” More. Longtime sportswriter Ivan Maisel pens a lengthy profile of former Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick, under whose tenure the Fighting Irish won 10 national championships, including six in fencing. Former Board of Trustees Chair Jack Brennan tells Maisel: “What Jack brought to the table was thinking differently,” and Maisel adds that the “men and women who worked with and for Swarbrick describe his ability ‘to see around the corner,’ a talent usually ascribed to a grandmaster seeing the next five moves on the chessboard. Swarbrick credited his legal training – “You learn in law school to start with your closing argument and work backward’ – but there must be more to it than that. There are 35,000 law school graduates a year and very few grandmasters.” Fighting Irish Deputy AD for Football Ron Powlus in his tribute to Swarbrick wrote: “You’re traditional, collaborative and thoughtful in everything you do, but you’re bold and innovative and rebellious at the same time.’” He tells Maisel: “He’s willing to be a little rebellious. You know, it takes courage to do that.” Maisel goes on to note that the AD job at Notre Dame also requires one to think like a conference commissioner, and he points to Swarbrick’s appointment with three commissioners to the subcommittee that created the expansion plan for the College Football Playoff. Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby: “That role is probably testament to how Jack is viewed. I don’t ever remember anybody suggesting over the 12 years I was involved that there ought to be any sort of rotation, you know, a BYU representative ought to be there instead of Notre Dame.” Lots more. Temple has selected Drexel President John Fry as its next president. Fry will take over when new leadership has been announced by Drexel. (link); Fry, who eight years ago wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed criticizing college football programs, tells the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Susan Snyder: “Temple has a really proud football tradition. As the incoming president, I would totally respect that. ... I have no preconceived notions and no plans to end the football program.” In the 2016 WSJ piece, Fry wrote that Drexel was not “burdened by the distractions that come with maintaining a football program” and that financial losses from athletics “force universities to divert funding from the fundamental task of educating students.” He also discussed the high salaries of coaches but says now the situations at Temple and Drexel are different. Drexel hasn’t had a football program since 1973, and Fry says: “I am really, really committed to athletics.” (link)

As a result, we are well positioned to thrive during the 2024-25 academic year and beyond.” (link)

A federal lawsuit filed against the NCAA by former Grambling women’s basketball student-athlete Brenda McKinney seeks to certify a class of Black DI athletes who competed for HBCU schools last year, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Michael McCann, who note the suit claims the athletes “were victims of racial discrimination by the NCAA’s system of academic enforcement.” In her motion, McKinney presents data that shows HBCU schools are far more likely than non-HBCU schools to receive postseason bans pursuant to the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program (APP). Libit and McCann note that “one line of defense deals with discriminatory intent, a necessary element for McKinney’s claim under Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The NCAA asserts that proof of disparate impact would be insufficient, in part because allegations of different impacts on HBCU versus non-HBCU teams (both of which the NCAA points out are racially diverse) ‘says nothing’ about how the NCAA treated a player who would be in McKinney’s proposed class. The NCAA has also insisted that it is impossible to show race as the ‘but-for’ cause of a player being denied postseason access.” Additionally, Libit and McCann point out that “the NCAA has maintained the intent of the APP, which was designed by multiple stakeholders in higher ed and adopted by the NCAA in 2004, is to ensure all college athletes gain a valuable education on a path toward graduation.” More. North Carolina women’s tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier has moved for a preliminary injunction against NCAA rules barring individual sport athletes from receiving prize money. Boise State law professor Sam C. Ehrlich notes the following passage in the complaint states the alleged antitrust harm: “The Prize Money Rules in the college education market function as a systematic boycott of any individual who has, at some point in their life accepted Prize Money exceeding the NCAA’s arbitrary limits. The NCAA uses its market power to enforce the Prize Money Rules, which require NCAA colleges to engage in a group boycott of players deemed to be out of compliance with the rules. Incoming Texas women’s tennis student-athlete Maya Joint and Nebraska women’s bowling student-athlete Jillian Martin have filed declarations in support of Brantmeier’s argument.
