UTSA AD Lisa Campos will earn a base salary of $550K starting December 1, 2024, as part of her contract extension, according to CollegeAD, which reports that figure will increase by $25K each year. Campos can also earn $40K retention bonuses at the end of the first, second and fifth years of the deal and will be eligible to receive $125K at the end of the fifth year as part of a deferred compensation package. Campos can pick up $75K in bonuses for reaching revenue generation goals and another $75K for athletic and academic accomplishments. Were she to leave for another AD opportunity before November 30, 2025, Campos would owe UTSA an amount equal to 60% of her annual base salary. The buyout falls to 40%, 20% and 0% in each of the following years, respectively. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller’s bonus structure has changed slightly due to the newly expanded Big Ten and College Football Playoff. According to The State News’ Madilynn Warden, Haller will receive a $40K bonus for making the CFP with that figure increasing should the Spartans advance and the bonuses continue if the team were to move through the playoffs. Haller will receive a $10K bonus for making a bowl game, which is different from last year's contract which stipulated Haller would receive a $40K bonus for playing in a New Year's Six bowl and $10K for playing in a non-New Year’s Six bowl. Spartans VP for Media and Public Information Emily Guerrant notes the “overall total of the bonus that he's eligible for did not change. But why we needed to amend the contract is with the Big Ten Conference changing, and the way the football college playoff structure is changing, there are additional games now that are played. … [Haller] is eligible for the same bonus he was before if they win a Big Ten championship.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor discusses the complications associated with post-House governance and reflects on how the industry got to where it is. “As revenues grew in this business, we kept suppressing the ability of athletes to share in that, and we've done it by our rules that we've set. And we knew eventually as these coaches' salaries began to rise and people saw some of the dollars that these athletic programs [were bringing in], why aren't the athletes able to share? I’ve always been an advocate of an athlete being able to profit off of their name, image and likeness. You know, we finally got there and so I guess in some ways it’s a good thing because it allows athletes to generate revenue and people come to watch them and cheer for them. At the same time we can’t forget that when we graduate seniors and we have a big senior class, they still come back and buy tickets the next year for the most part. So, it’s a combination effort, for the most part. … We also have to make sure that we educate the athletes so they know as they get this money that they take care of it, that they set themselves up for the future, and all those are positives.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts responds to Texas Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle’s assertion that Alberts told him he could leave if he wasn’t happy in College Station. “We talked at length. I said, ‘Are you frustrated? Is there anything I can do?’ And at the end of the conversation I said, ‘Jim, if you’re not happy here and you want to leave, that’s OK. But please don’t hurt our program and don’t hurt our kids.’ That’s what I said. And he said, ‘I will never do that, Trev.’ I said, ‘OK.’” Alberts also explains that on June 11 following the Aggies’ two victories over Oregon in the super regional, a meeting was called with the 12th Man Foundation to discuss the already approved $80M redevelopment of Blue Bell Park. “And [Schlossnagle] didn’t come to the meeting. Two days later, I called [a search] firm and said, ‘Let’s get ready to do a search.’” Additionally, Alberts says several donors informed him late in the season that Schlossnagle intended to leave, so he asked to meet with Schlossnagle after the regionals. “We scheduled a meeting for Monday (June 3), and he canceled. We scheduled a meeting for that Tuesday, and he canceled. That Wednesday I went and sat. … [Schlossnagle’s] son was in his office, and so I sat in (assistant) Nolan Cain’s office. I talked for 40 minutes with Nolan Cain until he came.” That’s when the ‘Are you frustrated?’ conversation finally took place, Alberts says. (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro tells SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane the network “did not have any intention" of sublicensing any College Football Playoff games, but Warner Bros. Discovery made a "very attractive" financial offer. "We recognize that we’re all operating in a challenging environment with cord-cutting and the competition for sports rights, so we decided to maintain some financial flexibility here. … We took a step back and asked ourselves, ‘Was this better or worse for college football?’ And we ultimately decided that [WBD] putting their networks behind these games would be a net positive.” Pitaro also comments on ESPN’s NCAA championship deal and says: “College is a huge part of the DNA of ESPN, and the NCAA championship deal was incredibly important to us. … The team at the NCAA understood our commitment to college sports in general, and they understood the value that they get from ESPN. I don't want to speak for them, but I believe they felt like it made the most sense for them to stick exclusively with us. ... Even beyond the women's basketball tournament, the Women's College World Series was just so fantastic this year. The Men's College World Series also [had] incredible ratings. Gymnastics, volleyball, lacrosse – all of it is up and to the right." (link)

As Wisconsin’s apparel deal with Under Armour nears its expiration date, Badgers AD Chris McIntosh says he’s unsure about what the next apparel sponsorship holds: "I'm having a hard time thinking about any one of our partnerships that's going to look the same five years from now as it does today. I think that's healthy. … Specifically in terms of our sideline partner, how that's going to play out, time will tell. But I'm sure when we get to the point of thinking about what the next iteration of that is going to be, the conversations will be much different." Meanwhile, the Wisconsin State Journal’s Todd Milewski wonders whether the next contract will include provisions that allow student-athletes to have their own apparel deals, and West Florida (DII) Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business Assoc. Dean of Academics and Accreditation Gil Fried says: "I don't think we've looked at that issue in deep enough detail as an industry because we probably don't want to see what the answer's going to be.” McIntosh adds: "I'm not saying that is or isn't going to be the direction it goes. I think anything's possible right now." As for whether the Badgers and UA can renew their agreement, McIntosh remarks: "I think Under Armour has been a great partner. 2016 is a lifetime ago. But they have done a good job of evolving with us during these times, certainly within the parameters of what our agreement allows to be done." (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit break down Chalmers et al. v. NCAA et al and note that “effectively, the new lawsuit attempts to provide a vehicle for at least a subsection of former NCAA athletes who are time-barred from receiving House settlement money to seek recompense for the appropriation of their NIL that occurred within the statute of limitations. … The Chalmers plaintiffs seek actual and treble damages as well as a permanent injunction that would enjoin the NCAA ‘and any person acting through it from relying on any unenforceable assignment of publicity rights.’” Attorneys for the plaintiffs contend in an email to Sportico that “the anticipated settlement in the House case provides compensation for college athletes who competed since mid-2016. But the NCAA’s illegal conduct harmed and continues to harm many more former student athletes.” As for how the case may play out, McCann and Libit explain that “probable defenses include contesting the statute of limitations argument offered by the plaintiffs. In addition, the NCAA could cite First Amendment protections for use of newsworthy events. … Players could rebut that defense in several ways, including by stressing that pro athletes are routinely compensated for the use of their NIL in broadcasts and video. However, at least one federal appellate court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, has rejected players’ claims regarding use of their names and images on televised broadcasts.” (link)

Utah State Football HC Blake Anderson has retained attorney Tom Mars to represent him following news that the Aggies informed him of their intention to part ways. Mars says in a statement: “Like any university, Utah State could fire Blake Anderson for any reason as long as they paid his buyout. However, based on the facts alleged and the language in Blake’s employment agreement, USU is going to be fighting an uphill battle if they try to fire him for cause just to avoid paying Blake what he’s owed.” Additionally, Mars tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “Stiffing a head coach by blaming him for what his supervisor was supposed to do is a novel approach, but that theory will never hold up in court.” (link)

The agreement keeps a $400K longevity payment that would be due on 3/15/25. It adds: a $1M longevity payment that would be due on 3/15/27, a $400K payment that would be due 3/15/29, and a $1M payment that would be due on 3/15/31 if the automatic one-year renewal occurs on April 30, 2026. Bacot credits much of his earning power to UNC’s brand. “If you go to Carolina and you handle business, you go out there and play, somewhat be marketable and stuff like that, it pays. I could never say a bad word about Carolina or anything because I got life-changing money in college just off playing basketball.” (link)

The Atlantic Sun will move to divisional scheduling for the 2025 baseball and softball seasons. Commissioner Jeff Bacon: “The move to a divisional scheduling model for the Baseball and Softball seasons will provide tremendous cost savings to our institutions, will enhance local rivalries, and will improve the experience of our student-athletes. Coupled with a regionalized scheduling approach to the 2024-25 Men's and Women's Basketball seasons, these changes demonstrate the commitment of the Atlantic Sun Conference, via our Directors of Athletics and Presidents, to provide an elite student-athlete experience in a fiscally responsible manner. Our conference is in a position of strength and our destination-based membership will continue to work to identify opportunities to accelerate our growth trajectory.” (link)

Notable development in the esports landscape as NBA 2K CEO Andrew Perlmutter held a town hall meeting and announced massive layoffs of staff, general managers and coaches as it prepares for a comprehensive revamp of the league. According to Dexerto’s Declan Mclaughlin, the 2K League “did not break 26,000 peak viewers in any of its four major tournaments in 2024. Meanwhile, League of Legends’ biggest international tournament in 2023 broke 6M peak viewers.” SBJ’s Austin Karp reacts: “Wow. What a U-turn. NBA 2K League teams were being sold for $25M a pop just two years ago. Back in 2019, Ted Leonsis said, ‘I believe that, in 10 years, one NBA 2K player will be more well known, popular, and better compensated than LeBron James is today.’” (link, link)

Outgoing Golden Hurricane AD Rick Dickson: "I am deeply grateful that I can wrap up my career as a collegiate athletics director by announcing this important gift, which will leave UTulsa Athletics on sound financial footing for generations to come. Now-official Ohio State AD Ross Bjork tells The Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman that the transition period in Columbus “was a great opportunity to get to know the people and the place without worrying about the day-to-day operations.” Still, he adds, OSU “is a massive place. You can’t bite it off in four months. It’s going to take however long that takes to continue to learn.” Bjork also acknowledges he’s coming in at a time when revenue generation is particularly important. To that end, one idea Bjork has suggested is the addition of a premium services club at Ohio Stadium that could be open throughout the year. The Buckeyes are also selling tickets to four football practices during preseason training camp in August, and Bjork notes: “Every piece has to be looked at. How do you monetize that?” Now that he’s formally in the AD chair, Bjork plans to begin meeting individually with donors after being mostly limited to prearranged events during the transition period. “The role of the modern-day athletic director, and even 20 years ago, has always been relationship building, being visible in the community, not because you’re the most important person, but because they need to hear from leadership.” In addition to sharing revenue, Bjork notes the football facility needs an upgrade. The cost for the project is undetermined, but Bjork estimates it will be $150-200M and adds: “We want to go fast. We want to capture momentum we have right now. We want to go through the summer and fall and have these really high-level conversations with our lead gift prospects. We’re teeing all of that up right now.” (link)

Utah State has informed Football HC Blake Anderson of its intention to part ways “for actions taken in spring 2023. These actions violated both his employment agreement and university policy. Under his employment agreement Coach Anderson will have 14 days to respond.” USU also notes that “this decision comes after a thorough external review of alleged noncompliance with university policies that implement Title IX, which require full and timely reporting of disclosures of sexual misconduct — including domestic violence — and prohibit employees from investigating disclosures of sexual misconduct themselves.” AVP/Deputy AD of External Affairs Jerry Bovee and Aggies Football Director of Player Development & Community Austin Albrecht have also been dismissed for “violations of university policies related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failures of professional responsibilities. Consistent with Utah’s public records laws and USU policies, the university is not able to release any additional information until all opportunities to respond and/or appeal have expired, which is a minimum of 14 days.” (link)

North Carolina Business Court Chief Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III heard roughly an hour of arguments from Clemson and the ACC in their ongoing legal dispute this morning and committed to issuing rulings on Clemson’s motion to dismiss and Clemson’s motion to stay the ACC’s lawsuit by late next week. The State’s Chapel Fowler notes there is “currently a July 12 hearing set at the Pickens County Courthouse on the ACC’s motions to dismiss and stay that case as the defendant (the same motions Clemson made for the ACC’s suit in Charlotte, in which the university is the defendant). … Legal experts polled by The State and other media outlets have found more credibility in the ACC’s argument, and the general sense is that the dueling lawsuits between the ACC and Clemson will eventually be heard (and perhaps consolidated into one case) in Charlotte. Bledsoe’s pending rulings will be a test of that theory.” (link)

Boise State law professor Sam C. Ehrlich issues a correction on his reporting that CLC was a party in a recently filed lawsuit by several former men’s basketball players, including former Kansas standouts Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins. “The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is NOT involved in this case. I had assumed based on the NC State lawsuit that they'd be involved in some way, but they were apparently dismissed from the NC State lawsuit as well. So my apologies to CLC for that error.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown takes a look at how the WAC can rebuild and reports that “university presidents and athletic leadership approached the league office about creating a document that would ask members to make at least a two-year commitment to the conference. The document calls for an increase in exit fees for anybody that leaves during that period, while also increasing financial distributions to each WAC member institution. … The new distributions, I’m told, include close to $100K for each school to make investments in instant replay technology and to improve their local broadcast quality, as well as low-six-figure distributions for ‘discretionary spending’ and to help offset decreases in NCAA distributions as a result of the House settlement.” Brown also reports that WAC officials informed UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin that league bylaws required a $2M exit fee penalty and because “Seattle and Grand Canyon gave advanced notice, their exit fee penalty is only $1M each, I’m told. That gives the league a $4M windfall now, with additional money later from Seattle and GCU.” Geography and institutional alignment are also factors keeping the WAC together for now, and Brown notes that while realignment is likely not finished in the West (particularly once Oregon State and Washington State make their long-term maneuver), the WAC still has a pulse. “And the first step to living to fight another day is living, after all.” (link)

Toledo is adding women’s rowing with competition set to begin in the fall of 2025. Rockets AD Bryan Blair notes that no resources will be reallocated from any other UT sport and infrastructure and start-up costs will be “relatively low.” The roster is expected to have 50-60 student-athletes and the program will likely hire a coach sometime in 2024. (link); Meanwhile, Extra Points’ Matt Brown adds: “Word in my neck of the woods is that Toledo won't be the last MAC team to launch a new program in the near future.” (link)

Montana State will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bobcat Indoor Athletic Center on July 16. The Bobcat IAC will contain 100 yards of FieldTurf encompassed by a six-lane 300-meter oval track. The north end of the facility features the building's main entrance, a meeting room and restrooms. Inside the pre-engineered metal building supported by steel beams, a full drop curtain surrounding the football turf allows for a safe environment for multiple simultaneous sporting activities. Additionally, the track oval will be a full-pour polyurethane surface composed of BSS 1000 encapsulated texture surface, the same as the program's outdoor track, and will be installed by the Beynon Sports track surfacing company. The facility features two competition throwing rings, an approach apron for the high jump, and runways and pits for the pole vault, long jump, and triple jump. The IAC location displaces the current outdoor track hammer and discus throwing area, which will be relocated south of the outdoor track. A walkway connecting the current seating area to the new outdoor throwing areas will also be constructed. (link)
