The SAC inks Commissioner Patrick Britz to a contract extension that would keep him with the league through June 2027. Wingate President/outgoing President's Council Chair Rhett Brown: “The SAC is rightfully proud of our student-athletes' achievements and accolades and our institutions' collective successes. Patrick's steady leadership and long tenure have been fundamental to our sustained progress. In a time of so much uncertainty in college athletics, extending the commissioner's contract provides us the opportunity to scaffold bold and innovative initiatives onto the SAC's solid foundation.” (link)

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker sits down with Midwest Sports Net’s Joey McWilliams to discuss the league’s HBCU GO media rights deal, football initiatives, her longevity and more. As she completes her 12th season at the helm, she recounts joining the league when it was facing a $750K deficit and “needed some structure and some love and to break down silos,” and says the path out required “paying more attention to what is important and for us every decision that we’ve made, it’s always been about the student-athlete.” McWilliams-Parker highlights one benefit of the HBCU GO media deal will be the ability to “give exposure to all of our team sports specifically.” Further: “We had our media deals prior but this one is a pretty healthy one that gives us an opportunity to give more money back to our institutions specifically to athletics. So I'm excited about what we can do to give back to our schools to help their programs but also give the exposure and help tell more stories.” On the decision to eliminate divisions for football: “It's part of the strategy of growing football in our conference. […] If we're going to grow football and get unique opportunities like going to the Black College Hall of Fame game, we want to position ourselves even in the alignment with football selections, we want to make sure that we are aligned in the best way we can so that our schools are being considered for those opportunities.” (link)

The NCAA is in discussions with USA Gymnastics about potentially overhauling the collegiate men’s gymnastics championships. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams reports the talks are “part of a pilot program run through Team USA aimed at preserving the critical pipeline between college sports and the Olympics. Stakeholders on both sides are seeking more visibility and more financial sustainability for men’s gymnastics, a model that could eventually be replicated with other sports threatened by changes underway across college athletics.” Team USA Chief of Sport and Athlete Services Rocky Harris: “I want [national governing body] leaders to have a seat at the table to help develop sports at the college level. That’s important because they know the sports better than anyone else. They know what works, what doesn’t, how you can take advantage, how you can commercialize it.” Novy-Williams also reports that men’s gymnastics is one of a handful of sports that the Team USA College Sports Sustainability Think Tank’s sports management pilot has focused on. “It’s also worked with track & field and fencing. The hope, among people in both the NCAA and Olympic movements, is that it can be a framework for other sports to foster more collaboration between college programs and national governing bodies (NGBs).” NCAA Managing Director of Championships and Alliances Liz Suscha: “Where there have previously been informal connections between coaches groups and an NGB, or coaches groups and the NCAA, we’ve now got a more committed way to talk to each other. We’re all committed to figuring out how to get things done. What we’re getting out of these partnerships today will look completely different in five or six years if we keep this up.” (link)

After a decade, the Live United Bowl will no longer be played. Live United Bowl Chairman Allen Brown: “Always with a goal of putting on a first-class event, it has become more expensive and challenging to live up to the standards we have set. Expenses have continued to increase and although we have a giving community, sponsorships have declined. The universities struggle with limited athletic budgets which directly impact the number of participating athletes and support groups such as bands, cheer, and dance teams. To make it a true college experience, it is important to have student involvement, but it requires additional funds to help offset these expenses.” (link)
