Utah State AD Diana Sabau says the Aggies intend to participate in full student-athlete revenue sharing as a result of the potential House settlement: “Absolutely, we will get there. I think we will get there perhaps a little bit slower, or a more thought out process, than the Power Five. It would be easy for them to dip into some coffers to get it started. You know, we don’t have a lot of reserves. We don’t have that financial fund just ready to go. Every day we eat what we can kill, and we have to do a better job of having more reserves, so that we can plan for that. [...] When you talk about revenue sharing, it’s going to be here’s your compensation package. It’s your cost of attendance, your NIL, your revenue sharing, your Alston money (education-related funds for athletes). It’s our total compensation package now. That’s what people are driving for.” (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe believes the Wolf Pack are on the cusp of winning a conference title for the first time since her arrival. "I just know it's happening, and I feel like I can almost taste it. Obviously, we experienced (success) in basketball. We've experienced that the last two years. And that needs to get out to our other sports. But we have to win like basketball has continued to do. I really feel like it's coming. … I think we're going to continue to develop and get the right kids and get our teams to win and this community will continue to support us. We want our gear out in stores. We want people waving their flags. We want people coming and buying tickets. And when you come and you have a great experience, you tell your friends about it and then you come back again and all of that. I believe all those things are happening." Rempe also notes that “we’re trying to continue to move forward with facilities, and some of the pieces that we continue to gather more and more information and data is really important to me to know where we are to benchmark. And we've seen some of those numbers. The conference has been doing that a lot. We need to grow that because right now we're at the bottom of the league for competitive investment. … I have continued to tell this narrative kind of in my head, and as I say, I just believe it: this community will support us. We have to do our part and win. There's no question that we have to do that. But there is nothing that I have ever seen or felt or experienced that brings a community together more than sports.” (link)

Finding a teal tie is easier said than done, just ask newly minted Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller. He and his wife spent a few hours and visited several different stores in Columbia, SC before finding the right one, which he wore, with a matching pocket square, to his introductory presser with the Chants. Now that he is properly outfitted, Miller believes CCU’s trajectory could be similar to that of UCF, despite having a student body five times smaller than the Knights. Miller: “I think if we can find ways to generate more revenue and keep reaching out and growing that fan base. There are a lot of really great possibilities. It’s my job to grow those resources, put the people around that can make us really successful, sustain that success and keep growing it, and put us in a spot where, when those changes occur, we’re one of the top ones at the forefront that people want to be a part of.” On NIL: “It’s not always just about the money. (Athletes) want to make sure that it’s a great culture that they’re coming into. I’ve watched student-athletes that have agreed to take less money to stay in a really good position, and I think that’s what we need to develop at Coastal so that our coaches are not having to constantly go in and redo their rosters every year, that they’re able to help the student-athletes feel like I’m able to get something here.” With a deal that runs through 2027, and his former boss, South Carolina AD Ray Tanner’s deal set to expire in 2026, The Sun News’ Ben Morse asked how long Miller plans to be in Conway. Miller: “I want to go somewhere where I can make a difference, not only in the job I’m at but in the community I’m at. That’s why I spend a lot of time here, and that’s my plan at Coastal.” (link)

New VMI AD Jamaal Walton touches on his key objectives now that he’s back in Lexington: “It’s about how I can make people better, how I can empower people. [...] I have been a part of it. I’ve been in barracks—I know the feel, the touch, the smells of what makes this place great. I want people to know outside of Rockbridge County that we’ve got something here. We’ve got something special. [...] I want to find ways to raise revenue, I want to raise trophies, I want to raise diplomas and I want to raise the VMI brand but more importantly, quality men and women.” (link)

Add another $8M to the recent donation haul for Tulsa as an estate gift from the late Tom and Betty Johnston compliments the $30M anonymous donation announced last week. The Johnston’s gift will go toward the enhancement of Golden Hurricane facilities. Outgoing AD Rick Dickson: “Beyond the tangible part of what the dollars and the gifts are, it’s really the signal and a message to others that, if we're going to do it, and we're going to do it in the most challenging time in the history of intercollegiate athletics, that type of symbolic gestures are what it's going to take. Here are two cases, two families whose lives' work and benefits going towards something that they were both passionate about and loved. That's a pretty strong statement.” (link)

UTSA in March began producing games out of two new broadcast control rooms inside the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence. The $5M investment allows the Roadrunners to produce hoops, volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball broadcasts for the upcoming academic year, and tennis and track are included in future plans. The space is projected for use in more than 100 game broadcasts annually and can also produce a second in-arena feed for the Convocation Center video boards alongside the standard basketball broadcast stream. UTSA AD Lisa Campos: “The production is just a whole level above what it used to be, because of the staffing levels, the number of cameras, and now being able to control all of that. Now, we have really great quality cameras, and not just a camera mounted on a fence, not being able to move. We’d probably get some feedback about that. ‘It’s so static. We’re not following play.’ Now, we’re able to do all of that.” (link)

New Western Carolina Men’s Basketball HC Tim Craft & his family used D1.relocation for the transition to Cullowhee. Craft’s wife, Jessica, adds context: “Just wanted to let you know how pleased we were with D1.relocation's services and the moving company you referred to us! Their crew that packed, loaded, and unloaded were amazing. Very professional, respectful, careful, and just really fun to have around and work with! I can't say enough good things about them and will definitely be recommending them 10/10! Thank you as well for taking such good care of us! In a time of transition with so many unknowns and anxiety on high, D1.relocation was a bright spot for us!” (link)

Arizona State Senior Assoc. AD for Ticketing and Business Analytics Mike Meitin, Boise State Assoc. AD for Strategic Marketing & Revenue Generation Jake Mankin and Affinaquest EVP of Collegiate Athletics Steve Hank join AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention for a conversation about how they’re managing relationships with fans and donors in an era of unprecedented change for the industry. The trio share insight into how they’re utilizing storytelling to message to segmented audiences; ways in which they’re professionalizing their business operations; and how they’re reaching new revenue goals while simultaneously enhancing the student-athlete experience. Hank: “What we say is a lot of schools are missing fans that they know are there, but they're hidden from view. And they keep going back to the same people over and over again and asking them to do more. For example, there's a school in the SEC that just recently launched a brand new license plate program. In three months, 48,000 license plates were sold…but when they looked at that information and brought it in and said, ‘Who do we know?’, they only knew 60% of those people were present in their database. … So when you look at that, you have to go out and communicate to them but now you know who they are, now you need to do the storytelling and tell the story that is relevant to that individual. … So, by understanding who they are, you can deliver the right message to the right person at the right time, but you first have to find them.” Lots more. Team USA national governing bodies are increasingly looking to donors for funding, according to SBJ’s Rachel Axon, who notes the NGBs are attempting to boost fundraising efforts by “starting foundations; reviving existing foundations; hiring staff to bring in donations; or some combination of all of those.” Axon also points out that “for the 32 NGBs for which SBJ could compile complete data, a majority of them saw sponsorships make up a decreasing share of revenue since the 2018 fiscal year, while they were evenly split on whether their USOPC funding had increased or decreased as a share of revenue.” U.S. Speedskating Executive Director Ted Morris notes that “sponsorship is difficult right now, and it’s complicated by LA28 being the 800-pound gorilla. For the majority of the Olympic sports, we’re not big enough, we don’t have enough scale to resonate with the sponsorship environment. So much of the money is going to football, basketball, baseball, the big sports. … [In] fundraising, the possibilities are infinite.” U.S. Ski & Snowboard Chief Revenue and Philanthropic Officer Trisha Worthington adds: “I’ve been doing this a long time, and I am shocked at how many people do not understand that we’re not government-funded. I feel like a broken record, but if I don’t say it every single time, it’s a missed opportunity.” Several NGBs are hiring major gifts officers focused on increasing donations, and Axon reports that “USA Triathlon hired its first major gifts officer in 2022 and saw donations more than double over the previous year. It has since received an $850K donation to help women’s triathlon become an NCAA championship sport.” CEO Victoria Brumfield: “Those are real things that USA Triathlon just could not have done.” (link)

Ohio State President Ted Carter is confident the athletics department will generate the revenue it needs to cover looming revenue increases following the House settlement. “We've just got to make sure that we maintain, even with this revenue-share model, that we can do everything that we can to be self-sufficient. This program has been self-sufficient, and we anticipate it will be self-sufficient going forward. And I would argue if you look across the entire landscape of college football, you're going to find only maybe three to five programs that are going to be able to say that in the next model.” Carter also notes that “we made one big, bold statement, and that is we're going to maintain 36 Division I sports. I watched during COVID-19 what schools like William & Mary and Stanford went through. Even in the state of Nebraska, which happened before I got there, the University of Nebraska at Omaha cut football and wrestling at the Division II level to move into the Summit League. Heavily criticized at the time. And as I've watched the college landscape and think about what it means to maintain these sports, it's important once you get them to do everything you can to hold on to them. You don't want to lose that. It's too important to the student-athlete. So we've made a declarative statement that we're going to hold on to that.” Carter on student-athlete employment: “We've got to maintain the student-athlete part. What has to be the attraction for somebody to come and wear a jersey for Ohio State still has to be to get a degree here. And we've been really, really successful at that. I've enjoyed that at every academic institution I've been. Division I athletes graduate at a higher rate than anybody else. We have the same thing here. … Those are things that we should be proud of, and we should make sure that we don't lose that.” (link)

Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle at the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss his new role, the importance of alignment with a president and what to expect from the Bulldogs in regards to creativity in fundraising and expanding the brand. Ivey also talks about protecting opportunities for non-revenue generating sports in the wake of the House settlement. When it comes to protecting non-revenue sports, Ivey says: “I'm a firm believer in the educational benefits and values of the athletics department and athletic opportunities. So, what are we doing to create and instill those opportunities and protect those opportunities for everyone, whether that's a football player or a bowling or a tennis student-athlete? What are we doing to protect those opportunities? So I think those things are going to be important to us…but again, it’s going to be looking at it from that standpoint of how do you manage all those wants and needs across the board – and it’s nothing that we probably haven’t been doing before, but it’s really more hyper-focused now than it ever has been.” Full interview on Connect. UT Arlington AD Jon Fagg joins the Discovering the Maverick Factor podcast to discuss what’s going on within the UTA athletic department, developments in the WAC and more. Fagg notes that conference realignment “hadn't touched us for a little while being in the Sun Belt for 10 years. Now it has. We're committed to the WAC, we're trying to be leaders. I view UTA as the flagship institution of the WAC, and so we want to take that leadership role. [UTA President Jennifer Evans-Cowley] shares that, and we're working closely with the conference office and other WAC members to stabilize and then expand the conference.” Fagg also comments on being located so close to the conference headquarters: “It really is important. I've been at different places – at NC State I was about an hour from the ACC office and you could just get more personal service because if you wanted to be at the conference office, you could. Same thing here. I can be at the conference office in 10 minutes. I did it two weeks ago because Commissioner Thornton and I were talking on the phone about something and I said, ‘Hey, I'll tell you what, why don’t I just pop up there and we can sit down and visit in person. And we did and it's incredibly helpful.” Full podcast. (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell inked a five-year contract extension back in May, according to CollegeAD, which notes the contract began on June 22 and runs through June 21, 2029. Sell will earn more than $334K in the contract’s first year and receive any raises implemented through statewide salary increases. Sell is also guaranteed at least $15K in supplemental income each year and is eligible for academic- and athletic-related bonuses ranging from $300 to $5K. Should SDSU terminate the contract without cause, Sell would be owed the remainder of his salary for the duration of the contract. If Sell leaves within the first three years, he would owe SDSU $100K. There is no buyout for the final two years. (link)

After implementing changes to its ticket pricing structure, North Texas saw its revenue from tickets and fees increase and experienced an uptick in attendance in multiple sports, including men’s and women’s basketball; however, the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito notes the “downside was a drop in football attendance during a challenging season.” Mean Green AD Jared Mosley: “Nobody likes an increase, but at the end of the day, we’re still in the bottom third when it comes to ticket prices and per-seat obligations in both football and basketball in the American [Athletic Conference]. Our intent is not to just overnight get there, but like everything else, as our teams improve and succeed, we’re going to have to continue to elevate. We comp everything we do with where we are in the American.” Vito reports UNT’s overall ticket and fee revenue for regular-season home games jumped nearly $300K to $1.8M in 2023-24 school year, and the “increase was due largely to a 49% increase in men’s basketball ticket revenue, which rose to a program-record $473,153. The Mean Green drew 4,132 fans per home game, a 14.5% increase over last season, on their way to a third straight appearance in the [NIT].” Women’s basketball attendance increased 15.2% to 1,693, while football season-ticket revenue increased $30K to $1.1M despite home attendance falling 6.6% to 17,761 fans per game. The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee tabled legislative proposals regarding preseason practice scrimmages and exhibition games, as well as an item focused on multiple-team events including the criteria that only one team per conference may participate in the same event. Committee members cited variables that need more vetting, including potential inconsistencies in the application of the proposed rule that would allow teams to play two preseason exhibition games against DI opponents. A bylaw remains in place that permits a men's basketball team to play in up to two closed preseason practice scrimmages or exhibition contests — or a combination of the two — against a non-I school. Other reasons for tabling the proposal include ongoing challenges associated with regular-season scheduling and differing landscapes in men's and women's basketball that have created challenges in determining the appropriate criteria for MTE legislation. A paper published in the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport authored by Troy researchers Chris Corr and Christer Atwater, Texas A&M researcher Calvin Nite and Alabama researcher Trevor Bopp analyzes the perception of Black Power 4 football coaches as recruiters. While Black coaches comprise over 50% of ACs in the P4, just 12% of HCs are Black. Corr, et al. note that “considering 77% of football recruits signed by Autonomy Conference programs were Black in 2019 and 2020, the stereotypical view that Black coaches can more aptly recruit Black players is relatively commonplace. In fact, recent research has illustrated that Autonomy Conference football coaches and recruits are ‘matched’ according to their racial composition. Among 2019 and 2020 Autonomy Conference football recruiting classes, 80% of White players had a White coach listed as their primary recruiter on 247Sports. … Considering many of the established recruiting hotbeds preside in major metropolitan areas with high Black population densities compared to the national average, Black position coaches are integral to the signing of the top-rated Black football recruits. Herein lies the tremendous value generated by Black coaches in Autonomy Conference football. From a value proposition standpoint, Black coaches are recruiting top-rated Black talent that is directly correlated to winning college football games. Given position coaches shoulder the bulk of recruiting responsibilities, what incentive is there for predominantly White head coaches to promote Black coaches to coordinator positions that inherently occupy less recruiting responsibilities? As coordinator is a key rung on the proverbial coaching ladder, recruiting ability exists as a possible explanation for Black coaches being passed up by their White counterparts for promotional advancement.” More.
