New Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sat down with the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs to discuss a myriad of issues facing the marketplace & the Buckeyes. Bjork on the industry’s structure: “Perhaps we need to rethink that, and say, ‘Hey, look, there's a place for everybody.’ It doesn't mean we won’t play each other, but how do we come to this spot where they can chase something and we can chase something based on the economic realities of where we are. … We need to work at the NCAA level to figure out more of a sort of demarcation within Division I and what that means. If we do the work and we're purposeful about it, that's where Toledo and Bowling Green, that's where they can thrive, because those are great programs.” On potential March Madness expansion: “[You want] the Cinderella stories. We want that. I just think that giving more opportunities and more content is what people want. TV partners want more content, and if you expand the tournament, you add more games. [...] People want more live sports content. The value of live sports content, especially in college athletics … we hear all these conversations about how we’re undervalued. OK, if that's the case, let's give more content out there and let's drive this value proposition that we keep talking about. I think there's a window. Do you have to get too big? No.” More. (link)

Hawaii AD Craig Angelos talks about a number of topics with Mountain West Connection’s Mike Wittmann, including how his previous experience as an AD informs his current approach. “There is no textbook for being an athletic director. Each institution is like a very challenging puzzle, and finding the pieces that fit together to maximize the organization’s potential is essential. Sometimes, those puzzles also have missing pieces or even multiple of the same pieces, and you have to go out and make it work. … At Hawai’i, I am applying the lessons I’ve learned while also tailoring my approach to fit the culture and needs of the department and university.” Angelos also describes how the job has changed with the advent of NIL: “The biggest challenge for athletic directors with the introduction of NIL is balancing the enhancement of student-athlete initiatives while meeting overall department needs. NIL can dilute the limited resources available at any institution. However, the goal remains to maintain and ideally increase support in both areas. It’s another avenue of support for our student-athletes. I think overall, it’s crucial to adopt a mindset where all boats rise together – where 1+1 can equal 3.” On having teams that compete in different conferences: “It allows us to learn best practices from each league and collaborate with great leaders like [Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly and Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez]. … I really enjoy working with the Presidents and athletic directors in both leagues. I take a lot of notes because of the insights each of them provides.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates VP Dr. Brad Bates sits down with Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton to learn more about Fenton’s journey to the commissioner's chair and reflect on their shared time at Miami (OH). Fenton also discusses his original career aspiration – becoming a collegiate hockey coach – including his experience writing letters to several DI hockey programs before connecting with RedHawks then-HC Rico Blasi and moving to Oxford as a volunteer assistant coach while attending grad school. Fenton touches on the work-life balance as a commissioner: “But you really immerse your kind of family life within the campus culture and the athletic culture when you work in an athletics department, I think that that works best. And so it wasn't just that Josh worked at Miami University and I went to the games and I was gone. When I went to games, a lot of times it was our family engaged in and around the athletics events.” Still, Fenton acknowledges that “you miss things. There are moments when I've missed things where it's really bothered me but then you also know that that's part of it. But then you prioritize, even maybe at the sacrifice of some things professionally, being involved obviously in their activities.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Alabama Deputy AD for External Jessica Paré and Learfield SVP/Head of Content Grant Jones join AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention to share insight into the first year of a 15-year multimedia rights relationship, which includes the creation of an original content platform and NIL hub. Jones and Paré discuss the collaborative nature of the partnership, including how their teams evaluate their whiteboard of ideas, current content-creation trends and the metrics for success that define the value of a piece of content. Paré and Jones also reflect on the role storytelling plays for the Crimson Tide in terms of fan engagement, NIL partnerships and revenue generation opportunities. Jones explains that at the beginning of every sales cycle “we say to Jess and her team and the rest of the athletic department what are the priorities for you? What are the stories you all want to tell? Because you got a new football coach, there's a woman on the gymnastics team that’s actually going to be in the Olympics this summer – what are the stories that you want to tell? And we then work with them to figure out how do we tell those stories? … You have to balance those stories with how you monetize it, so that's the certain proactive approach.” Full conversation. Memphis Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway on “The Big Podcast with Shaq” told his former Orlando Magic teammate his take on NIL and pegged Shaquille O’Neal’s potential haul at LSU during his playing days at $4M-$5M: “We're in a world right now where it's happening, it's here, there's nothing you can do about it. And it's survival of the fittest. You have to have a fan base that understands that you have to have the donors and the (Memphis) Rebounders and the boosters that understand. You have to have a president and an AD that believe in it and understand it. So it's a whole thing now. And it's not about hooping anymore, Shaq. Who knows what you would've gotten coming out of LSU now. That would've been crazy numbers.” Hardaway on if there needs to be a NIL governing body: “I would love that, because there should be a governing body. I think what's making the boosters and the donors around the country frown is because they can give a guy 5, 6, 800K, and he could have the best year of his life. But if someone offers him $2 million next year, he's gone. And that's what's the problem is with college sports right now.” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy on the future of revenue sharing: “I think the two decisions that, well there will be a lot of them, the two decisions will be one, how does Title IX play into this. And then two, what will your ability be to go and get actual outside NIL income to raise those numbers even higher (than whatever comes to players from the $22 million). … We, in my opinion, are in a little bit different time and generation with these players. Based on, at this time next year, we’re going to be talking about employees. I know they’re not going to call them that. But when your university is paying them, they’re employees. They just don’t have a contract yet.” A number of football student-athletes chimed in at Big 12 media days, with Pokes’ linebacker Nick Martin saying: “It is definitely dope. I think it will have its cons and pros. Pros will be you’re getting more money, and cons will be you get looked at as an employee now. But it takes away from the amateur aspect of it. Where it is like the last time you get to play a team sport as an amateur and just really not worry about the business side when it comes to ball… Now you got some different type of expectations. I mean that is what life is going to be after football. So, I mean it could be a pro and a con, really depend on how you look at it.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a look at a new generation of college sports administrators, many of whom have familiar names. “College sports is so often a family affair, with sons and daughters of coaches often playing and eventually coaching, themselves. Less recognized, but no less the case, is the hereditary nature of athletic administration, from ADs to conference bosses, as exemplified by the successors of [former Big Ten Commissioner Jim] Delany and his fellow former Power 5 commissioners – Mike Slive (SEC), Bob Bowlsby (Big 12) and John Swofford (ACC).” Libit reports that Delany’s son, Newman, recently sent an email to Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock soliciting interest on behalf of Collegiate Athletic Solutions. The email read, in part: “I know you have worked with my father, Jim Delany, but [I] wanted to introduce myself.” Delany, Libit adds, is “the new venture’s senior vice president and only publicly known employee.” Libit goes on to highlight some instances where familial relationships raised conflict-of-interest concerns, and FloSports Senior Director of Global Rights Acquisition Matt Bowlsby, son of former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, says when negotiating deals with the Big 12, the elder Bowlsby would exclusive himself to “ensure there was no conflict of interest.” Matt Bowlsby, who Libit notes attended graduate school at Stanford while his father was the Cardinal AD, says Bob has served as a sounding board, “but that is the extent of his involvement. I think everyone wants to make it on their own merits.” Lots more. (link)

Administrators & coaches utilizing D1.relocation’s services will now have the opportunity to obtain retirement planning advice from certified financial planner, Josh Klinger, J.D., CFP. D1.relocation COO Daniel Feig: “I’ve known Josh for over a decade since he was a Director of Athletic Compliance at the University of Tennessee. EA Sports SVP/Group GM for Tiburon Studios and American Football Daryl Holt talks with SBJ’s Jason Wilson about the changes the company has taken into account since producing its last college football video game: “When you move from where we were in 2013, when we last released that game, to where we are today, not only has the technology changed, not only has the player base changed, not only has the industry changed in terms of life service, capability, connectivity, year-round updates and aspects of the experience that continues to shift and change all of those things – these influence the game that we made today.” Holt adds: “There's an element of Dynasty [mode]. That was the forefront, the focal point of this game. As we were bringing it back, we've seen how the community engaged within NCAA 14 for multiple years after we stopped making the game. And Dynasty was the lifeblood of that. How do you continue to build a program? How do you recruit? How do you drive this passion that you have for a school, for taking a school that's smaller and bringing it all the way up to the national championship level? That is just something that is inherent in college football, and in our game that is very different [than Madden]. This is a key aspect of the college football game.” As far as how NIL will factor in, Holt explains EA settled on a model that will take into account what players want in terms of brand recognition, program ranking and national TV exposure when it comes to recruiting in Dynasty. “[NIL is] not solidified, and it's constantly changing. So all those things kind of play a role in how we've dealt with it. And now we're looking to deal with it as we go forward.” More. (link)

Houston Christian continues to push back in the House case, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “[N]either the NCAA nor the Power 5 conferences have adequately represented HCU’s interests ... Virtually all of the back damages were caused by the Power 5 conferences and done to Power 5 athletes. Yet the Power 5 conferences will pay only a relatively small percentage of those damages…” Also, “Indeed, the $2.8 billion settlement does not truly represent the loss of student-athletes’ name, image and likeness. At a contested evidentiary hearing, HCU believes this number will be unsupportable. Instead, the majority of this amount represents the moneys institutions are diverting from core academic functions to induce players to enroll at their schools. This diversion of funds earmarked for academics is on top of the untold millions of dollars Division I sports loses each year. This is the basis for HCU’s allegation that the proposed settlement will cause HCU and other similarly situated institutions and their officers and trustees to be in violation of their fiduciary duties.” (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez Q&As with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna and compares her second media days as the commissioner to her first: “It’s the difference between going into a party where you don't know anybody and going into a party where you see a lot of familiar faces. There’s a relaxing and almost like, ‘Hey, great to see you,’ type of vibe to it. My year one was my year one; that's always got some newness to it. But also the whole membership issues were hot topics, and now I feel like we're good. And you could talk about football and forward-planning and instead of being reactive you can really just talk about vision, future planning, that type of thing.” Nevarez also talks about her expectations with Oregon State and Washington State joining for the upcoming year: “You'll see it in our schedules. They actually added a tremendous strength of schedule to us, which is really, really helpful. Because scheduling is hard, it's hard to get games. So we're really excited about this agreement. But when you look up and down our non-conference schedules, we have 35 (games) against the A4; the next closest league is at 26. So that is a tremendous testament to our coaches swinging for the fences, and also a signal that they believe in the strength of their teams.” More from Nevarez. (link)

As the public perception battle continues among the Power 4, the ACC notes its members have won the most national championships since 2021-22 in league-sponsored sports among all conferences. The ACC also points to 11 bowl teams in 2023-24, the most for any league, plus success this past year on the hardwood with four Men’s programs in the Sweet 16 & three in the Elite 8, again most among all conferences. On the Women’s Hoops side, the league has had eight teams in the tournament each of the last six years, tops nationally. (link)

On the latest News & Brews podcast, James Moore Director of Collegiate Athletics Services Jim Booz discusses the firm’s recent NIL survey. “We surveyed athletic administrators from the range of institutions in Division I to assess their confidence level for their programs everywhere from rules education, compliance monitoring, monetization opportunities… A very, very high percentage of respondents felt like it was really important for their institution to have an effective NIL strategy…but less than half of those same respondents felt like their strategy was effective. I don’t think that’s alarming because it is pretty new, but at the same time, there’s area for improvement, right?” On planning for post-House, Booz points out, “November is the first signing period in basketball, and so for these prospects, what kind of financial packages are they committing to for 2025? There are coaches telling prospects this summer, right now, today, about what their financial package is going to look like when they enroll in 2025. They don’t have the answers to that.” Partner Katie Davis adds, “The reality is no one knows what’s going to happen. So it takes an educated guess and strategy built around the institution’s risk tolerance and their philosophical priorities.” When it comes to consideration of IRS-related risk factors, Davis says, “One area that worries me is the reality of advance payments to athletes for activities meant to support the institution’s charitable purpose. If those athletes enter the transfer portal, how are they still supporting the charitable purpose? Contracts need to outline requirements for athletes who leave before they fulfill their obligations, so (institutions) don’t get in trouble by the IRS.” (link)

For the second year in a row, the ‘Cuse Athletics Fund at Syracuse saw record levels of support, thanks to 14,367 donors who contributed a total of $50M. This represented 3K+ more donors than the year prior and was the fourth straight year of growth in both dollars raised and donors. The Athletics Opportunity Fund, which serves as the unrestricted annual fund, saw a 257% increase YOY with the number of contributors doubling to an all-time high of 2,408. (link)

Colorado State Football HC Jay Norvell says someone purportedly associated with Kansas State offered Rams QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi $600K to enter the portal after Wildcats QB Will Howard departed for Ohio State. “If you have enough evidence, you can prove it, but a smoking gun is a smoking gun. He said a guy at Kansas State called and offered him $600K because they lost their quarterback if he got into the portal. I'm not accusing Kansas State of anything, I'm just telling you what the kid told me. So if they don't want their name thrown in it, then they should probably get a handle on their people, but there's a lot of that going on in college football and that's just the way things are right now." Norvell also says Ole Miss and Texas A&M have tried to entice players on his roster to enter the portal. (link)

+ Texas Baseball ACs Nolan Cain and Max Weiner will both receive base salaries of $400K, per the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis, who notes that is a “slight raise from the $375K that Texas paid the baseball program's highest-paid assistant in 2023.” Davis adds that the salary details for Longhorns AC Troy Tulowitzki have yet to be released. “However, Texas was slated to pay Michael Earley a base salary of $200K before he took over as the head coach at Texas A&M.” Also from Davis: “Texas is declining to release the details of new baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle's contract until it is approved by the board of regents.” (link); D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers adds: “Since Schlossnagle had a hefty buyout to leave A&M, I'm told his contract will have an escalator to essentially 'pay back' the buyout that Texas had to pay. Pretty common, but wouldn't look for him to hit max pay until a few years in.” (link)

The Baseball Rules Committee has recommended expanding the use of one-way communication devices beginning with the 2025 season. Under the proposal, a player on the field or coaches in the third base or first base boxes could initiate one-way communication to relay signals to offensive or defensive players. Xavier Baseball HC/Committee Chair Billy O’Conner: "Right now, catchers can't call pitches electronically. This gives them the freedom to call pitches. As for the base coaches, it allows the third-base coach to call the signs electronically. Right now, the signs are being relayed in from the coach's box to the dugout, then the sign is sent to the players. We just want this to be a more efficient process." The committee also proposed that hitters must be alert toward the pitcher by the time the 20-second action clock reaches 8 seconds rather than 10 seconds. Committee members reason that allowing hitters two additional seconds balances the action-clock rule where pitchers can't hold the ball for up to 10 seconds in an attempt to "freeze" the hitter. Additionally, the committee recommended eliminating the limit on how many warmup pitches can be made before an inning. Starting pitchers could take as many throws as possible in 120 seconds. Relievers would be allowed to take as many warmup pitches as possible in 150 seconds. More proposals. (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chip Towers shares details of the reckless driving arrest of Georgia football student-athlete Bo Hughley: “With star defensive back and recent 5-star signee Ellis Robinson IV riding shotgun, Hughley’s vehicle failed to negotiate [a] curve, struck the curb on the right side of the vehicle, crossed a pedestrian crosswalk as it left the roadway, sheared off a 25 mph speed-limit sign at the ground and ran through grass and pine straw before returning to the roadway and coming to rest in the street. The vehicle was disabled because the right-front tire had been completely torn off and was found in a ditch a considerable distance away. … The extensive damage to the vehicle – plus remote camera footage captured from surrounding light poles – is why responding officers did not believe the claims of Hughley and Robinson that they had been traveling the posted speed limit of 25 mph when the accident occurred at 6:28 p.m. Tuesday.” Towers notes Hughley’s citation was the first of three traffic-related stories involving UGA football players this week, including one who pleaded no contest to reckless driving and had DUI charges dismissed and another in which two players were cited for racing each other down West Broad Street. “Based on ongoing reporting by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, those three arrests bring to 24 the number of known incidents in which an individual associated with the Georgia football program has been apprehended by police for speeding, reckless driving or operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs since January 2023.” (link)
