South Carolina has inked AD Tanner to a two-year extension that would keep him with the Gamecocks through June 2026. President Amiridis: “Ray Tanner continues to set a high standard and has made Gamecock athletics an essential part of our community and our state. Ray’s record of building up our student-athletes while improving the fan experience is second to none.” Tanner will receive a pay bump from $1.02M to $1.175M. Should USC or Tanner terminate the contract, they would owe $500K pro-rated annually through June 30, 2024. Starting July 1, 2024, if either party exits the deal, it would owe no buyout. (link)

Arizona President Robbins says Pac-12 members are “locking arms” and remains confident the league will secure a strong media rights deal that will keep everyone together. “There’s a lot of disinformation that, for instance, Arizona is going to the Big 12. We’re not going to the Big 12. We want to see what the deal is here because we all, including Arizona and Arizona State and all the schools, want to keep the conference of champions together.” Robbins also says he’s a proponent of pumping the brakes, noting the sense of urgency about getting a deal done is largely due to the “externalities” of media and fans. “There may be some media companies who we don’t even know about are not quite ready, and why don’t we get as many people bidding for what we think are valuable assets? But, the problem with that is I’m a minority voice in that discussion and people just want this to get done as soon as possible.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake observes that Arizona President Robbins, Arizona State President Crow and Utah AD Harlan’s public remarks this week are particularly resonant after a “puzzling” PR strategy over the past nine months. “The Pac-12 has had enough of other people telling its story. Several stakeholders punched back. Their message was singular — the Pac-12 believes it is moving toward a good deal. It’s committed. The schools still need to see numbers on paper, but they appear to be pointed in the same direction.” Canzano goes on to say he was “told by more than one veteran media-world source that ESPN, FOX, Amazon and Apple likely appreciate that the Pac-12 hasn’t engaged in orchestrated leaks aimed at taking the negotiations public. Decide for yourself if the collateral damage to the Pac-12’s brand over the last nine months is an acceptable byproduct. … At first, I wondered if the chorus coming from the conference footprint this week was an orchestrated effort. But after poking around, I’m told members were just weary with the propaganda and itching to speak out.” (link)

Newly announced SIU Edwardsville AD Gavin talks with Small College Conversations about a number of topics, says of his transition to SIUE that despite moving from DII (UW-Parkside) to DI, the functions will stay largely the same, though he jokes he won’t have the excuse of being young and inexperienced. “I’m confident in the job and I’m confident in the work that I think they need from their director of athletics, and that’s supporting coaches and staff. I think, in turn, you’re going to do a better job supporting your student-athletes. I think staff structure is going to be important. There’s some vacancies, there’s some work to be done there…and then I think a lot of the value and the brand-building and the storytelling that we have done at Parkside and that we’ve done across small college athletics remains a need there.” Full interview. Greater Orlando Sports Commission CEO Siegel tells the Orlando Sentinel’s Murschel that “we met with the Big 12 a year ago to start that conversation to make sure they understood how interested we are in many of their championships that we could host here in Orlando.” UCF AD Mohajir, however, believes the hoops tournament is fine where it is for now. “It needs to stay in Kansas City. It’s the best basketball tournament in America, and I can tell you it’s second to none and it’s been there for many, many years. They’ve tried to move it before to Texas and it hasn’t done as well. Our fans are going to absolutely love it. It’s not that I wouldn’t advocate if they decided to move it, but I don’t think they want to move it right now. It produces a lot of money and has a great flavor for basketball.” Big 12 Commissioner Yormark says he hasn’t considered moving the tournament. “From what I’ve seen and from the people I’ve spoken to, it’s a great fit for our conference.” (link)

On3’s Nakos examines Connecticut WBB student-athletes Bueckers and Fudd’s NIL partnership with Bose, noting it could serve as a template for future deals. Bose Head of Global Media and Partnerships Daley explains: “Look at the level of growth that you’re seeing in women’s sports, certainly the participation side, but on the spectator side and then the fandom side. We knew that this was an area that we wanted to invest in broadly. We’re looking to attract female consumers, younger consumers to our brands. So looking at NIL, partnering with athletes that are just very aspirational with both genders but with a big focus on Gen Z females makes the female women’s basketball athlete valuable for a brand like ours.” Daley says the ROI for Bose has been worthwhile and that the company will ramp up its NIL activity, with a focus on TikTok as the medium. “Regardless of ranking them, the fact of the matter is TikTok is absolutely at the table with Meta and YouTube.” (link)

Michigan standout OL Zinter tells The Michigan Insider’s Zuniga that while NIL wasn’t the primary reason he decided to come back, it did play a role. “Compared to the millions that I’d be leaving on the table in the NFL — I mean, you really couldn't compare the two. But it is nice to know that if you’re coming back, you're not going to be, ’Oh, man, I don't got no money to spend or to hang out.’” Zinter says U-M, unlike other schools, doesn’t promise recruits money for committing. “Some of these other schools, they have almost like a set balance of what you're going to make a year you’re there. Notre Dame had, for everyone on the team — no matter walk-on, scholarship, first-year, early enrollee, senior — everyone had a set amount that they were going to get. Michigan doesn't have that yet. I’m sure it's coming.” Zinter, whose brother recently signed with Notre Dame, adds: “What I've heard through my friends at the other teams is some of these freshmen that are coming in and are getting these huge NIL contracts — it’s kind of messing the locker room vibe up a little bit. You’ve got these seniors, third, fourth-year guys who have been playing for two or three years. Then you’ve got this freshman coming in who's making a million bucks more than them.” (link)
