Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger talks about buzz in Las Vegas about the possibility of Florida State and Clemson joining the Big 12 and notes the schools have three main options: joining the Big Ten or SEC, reforming the ACC with a smaller number of teams “where you would get a financial advantage because you wouldn’t split the TV distribution with 18, maybe you would just split it with 10. … And option three is to probably join another league. Obviously, there's only one other power conference league, and that's the Big 12. So, you look at those options and, again, they probably prefer number one, but I don't know that that's going to happen because the SEC has schools in those states already in Florida and South Carolina, and the Big Ten, I don't know how interested they are in coming south. I mean, those things might happen, but I think there is at least early conversation between the Big 12 and those schools about the possibility. I don’t know if it’s anything serious yet because they do have to get out of the ACC, whether that's through a settlement or a court ruling. So we could be months, if not years, away from something, but that does seem to be one of the possibilities is the Big 12.” Dellenger also notes the Big 12 could utilize private equity to help FSU and Clemson exit the ACC, “but then you’d have to pay them a distribution when they get to the league, an amount that is at least close to what the Big Ten and SEC are paying their schools.” The question then becomes whether Big 12 decision-makers would be okay paying FSU and Clemson upwards of $20M more per year than the other schools. Lots more from Dellenger, including how extending the GOR comes into play as well. (link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould Q&As with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna and says of the possibility of a one-year extension with the Mountain West for football – as broached by MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez – that “there are timelines dictated in that agreement, and we all are anxious to find out what our schedule looks like for the fall of 2025, including the coaches and the student-athletes. It's an important thing for us to get resolved and for us to have clarity around. So I would imagine in the coming weeks, we'll make good progress on that. We've all been focused on spring meetings and season preparation and all that, but I think there's a good window here in July, over the next couple weeks, for Gloria and I to make some progress on that.” Gould explains that when it comes to the possibility of rebuilding the Pac-12, “I always want to be really clear that my job and what I got hired to do was put these [Oregon State and Washington State] in the best possible position for the long haul. That might be rebuilding the Pac-12, it might not be. And my commitment and obligation to them is to be open-minded about any potential scenario that might come down the pipe. And I'm sure there's scenarios we don't even know about at this point to be honest with you, given kind of the chaos in the industry right now.” Looking forward, Gould believes OSU and WSU are “in a place to be able to take some risks and to be able to try some new things and think outside the box from a revenue stream perspective. And I think Pac-12 Enterprises is one example of that for us. The reason that the two presidents made a commitment to keep that (is) because I think we view that as a very valuable financial asset.” Lots more. (link)

More from Utah AD Mark Harlan at Big 12 Media Days, where he said of the House settlement: “We are all-in on wherever the settlement falls. We certainly have a straw man of what it’s going to look like, but until it’s ratified…but we’re all-in, we’ve been preparing for that. We’re blessed to have an incredible fan base, donors, corporate program. We’ll get there and we plan on carrying our sports. I think that how we’re going to get there is just a lot of really good work in the community, continued work to explain how important that is for our student-athletes to continue to move forward in that way. And again, we’re just very lucky. We have some amazing supporters that really get it and want to help us.” Harlan also asserts the Utes will not be eliminating any sports post-House: “We have a president that’s all-in. We have a board of trustees that’s all-in, and we have a fan base that has proven time and time again they’re all-in. We’re going to learn, we’re studying Title IX as it relates to the settlement. … We cannot have any of our Olympic sports do anything else but go forward.” Harlan on private equity: “I think you can’t just dismiss something because you’ve got a feeling about it or you’ve read something about it. I think it’s incumbent on the commissioner, which he’s done a great job of bringing opportunities and being thoughtful about it, and I kind of feel the same way. I think we need to look at every possibility. It does not mean it’s the right thing to do, but you’re derelict in duty if you don’t look into these things.” More. (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois was asked at Big 12 Media Days whether the Missouri Board of Curators’ actions influenced her decision to take the UA job and replied: “You know, I just love the University of Arizona. The University of Arizona was there when I needed them.” Reed-Francois explains that in 1994 her brother suffered a neck injury that left him paralyzed during her first year in law school at the U of A and says the “University of Arizona was there for me when I really needed them…and now I’m bringing my skill set to a place where, when Dr. [Robert] Robbins recruited me into the role, he said, ‘Your alma mater needs you.’ And so that’s why I came back.” (link)

During his annual presentation to the Minnesota Board of Regents, Gophers AD Mark Coyle remarked: "There's no doubt there's going to be some financial pressures as we try to navigate the new chapter of college athletics. We'll have to take a hard look at all of our sports and what we provide our student athletes." Coyle also noted that for Olympic sports, the Gophers are likely to focus on more regional non-conference traveling and slow down on new facilities projects. "I think you can see in our Olympic sports, for example, some of the experiences our student athletes have might look different. All programs are trying to figure out how to manage the back payments for the House settlement and how to determine the revenue share model moving forward." Additionally, Coyle noted the athletic department anticipates a balanced budget for FY24 at $135M, which ranked 10th in the 14-team version of the Big Ten. The Gophers' projected budget for FY25 is $150M, which is expected to rank 14th out of 18-team version. (link)

Northwestern has named Director of Golf and and Player Development Pat Goss as Interim AD, according to The Daily Herald’s Jim O’Donnell, who reports that in an interdepartmental statement obtained by The Daily Herald, Northwestern President Michael Schill wrote: “We plan to announce members of the search committee and the search firm we are engaging. The search committee will work expeditiously to recruit and hire our next AD…to ensure the incoming athletic director reflects Northwestern's values and goals.” (link)

Houston Football HC Willie Fritz weighs in on the Cougars’ AD search: “They talk about two things: hiring coaches, that’s one, and raising money, that’s two. In this day and age, it might be the opposite, it might be raising money one and hiring coaches two. I’ve worked for a lot of different ADs, and all have been great in their own right.” (link); The D1.dossier for the Cougars’ opening is ready to rock for those of you interested in the opportunity. New Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan’s five-year contract will pay him $350K in annual base pay, per CollegeAD, which reports Roan can earn up to 25% of his base in bonuses for academic, athletic, fundraising and other achievements. Roan is also in line to pick up a $40K bonus if he is still leading the Dukes on May 12, 2027. Roan will earn an additional $50K per year for promoting and supporting the Duke Club Proud and True Fund. JMU will also pay up to $100K to cover Roan’s buyout from Eastern Kentucky. Should either side terminate the contract without cause the remainder of Roan’s base pay would be owed, and both sides have agreed to explore a potential contract renewal by June 30, 2028. (link)

CBS Sports hoops headliner Matt Norlander: “The NCAA MBB committee has wrapped its annual summer meetings—with no decision in on whether or not to expand the NCAA Tournament, sources tell @CBSSports. The topic was discussed at length Tuesday and remains up for debate for many reasons, arguably the biggest being the significant financial commitment (millions more in expenses) that would come w/ expanding the men's + women's fields. There's no timeline on a verdict. There are *other* notable updates regarding the NCAAT that were approved and will be announced Thursday, sources said.” (link)

Big 12 AVP for Brand Katie Ristow sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Bryan Fischer to talk about the league’s top initiatives this past year, unique ideas that created a stir, Commissioner Brett Yormark’s leadership and influence on the Big 12’s branding initiatives and more. Ristow explains that when collaborating with institutions it’s important to remember they have their own identities. “We want to be a springboard where they can try new things and do different collaborations. One of the biggest ones that we did was when TCU was in the CFP Championship we went out to LA. We worked with them, we did some takeovers and some different boards around LA. … We found a town called Frogtown right outside, which was perfectly fitting for the Horned Frogs, and worked with a local brewery there and did a purple sparkly beer. We also wrapped a taco truck and drove around LA giving out free tacos. That was very much Big 12-branded that had TCU hints and influence.” More on Connect. (link)

Frost Echols LLC attorney Cooper Walker, who represents Peak Sports, has released a statement indicating that “Peak Sports has no desire to sue North Carolina Central University. Peak Sports greatly values its relationship with North Carolina Central University and looks forward to working together for many years to come. Peak Sports' only motivation in sending its letter to the Board of Trustees was to provide the truth regarding the inaccurate statements made by Dr. Perkins regarding Peak Sports.” HBCU Legends’ Kyle T. Mosley adds that Peak Sports “has no intention of seeking legal action regarding Dr. Skip Perkins's remarks.” Instead, Peak Sports President Ryan Holloway has requested that Eagles AD Skip Perkins "communicate these inaccuracies (as enumerated in a letter earlier this week) verbally during the upcoming Board Meeting with the Board of Trustees." Ahead of the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, the NCAA reports that “75% of U.S. Olympians will have competed collegiately as part of their journey to Team USA, which includes NCAA, junior college, NAIA and club programs. Of those, 65% (385 of 592) have competed in NCAA varsity sports across all three divisions. In total, 151 NCAA schools from 45 conferences will have one or more U.S. Olympians competing in Paris.” The top three NCAA schools represented on Team USA are Stanford (38 athletes), UCLA (17) and USC (16). The top five conferences represented on Team USA are the Big Ten (116 athletes), ACC (98), SEC (85), Ivy League (47) and the Big 12 (28). In terms of Olympic sports, the top five with NCAA varsity athlete representation are track and field (113 athletes), swimming (44), water polo (26), volleyball (24) and rowing (24). USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland: "We are incredibly grateful for the collegiate athletics administrators, coaches and support staff who inspire greatness in the student-athletes who will represent Team USA in Paris this summer. With more than 440 current and former college athletes on the U.S. Olympic Team, we know they are competing not only for themselves and our country but also proudly for their schools and school communities." College athletic leaders from the Power 4 and NCAA are working through final edits to the long-form document in the House settlement, “a process that could delay the expected filing date next week and result in an extension from the court,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Plaintiffs' attorney Jeffrey Kessler tells Dellenger: “We’re waiting for their final comments. We are hoping to file by the end of next week.” While changes submitted to the long-form document submitted by plaintiffs earlier this summer are not expected to be significant, Dellenger reports: “There are many looming issues regarding the future revenue-sharing model coming to college athletics, such as roster sizes by sport, a new third-party enforcement arm and the exact revenue cap figure. These items are not necessary to completing the long-form agreement, Kessler said, and are ‘internal issues’ that conference leaders must determine themselves. … The timeline for a full finalization of the settlement is likely to be ‘early next year,’ said Kessler, who suggested the month of January. However, implementation of the new revenue-sharing model would not begin until the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Revenue-sharing checks would most likely be distributed starting in the late summer or early fall.” (link)

A pared down version of the ACC’s lawsuit against Clemson will continue in North Carolina. According to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, Judge Louis A. Bledsoe III “dismissed many of the ACC’s claims but will allow the dispute over who owns the Tigers’ future TV rights to remain in the North Carolina Business Court. His ruling comes in advance of an upcoming ACC-Clemson hearing in South Carolina, where the Tigers have sued the league. From Bledsoe’s ruling: “The only court that has jurisdiction over [Florida State], Clemson, and the ACC – and thus the only court that can assure a consistent, uniform interpretation of the Grant of Rights Agreements and the ACC’s Constitution and Bylaws, the determinations at the core of the Pending Actions – is a North Carolina court. Only a North Carolina court, most likely in a single consolidated action in North Carolina, can render consistent, uniform determinations binding the ACC, FSU, and Clemson concerning the documents that are at issue in all four Pending Actions.” Bledsoe dismissed multiple ACC claims that Clemson breached its duties related to league contracts and its constitution as well as the ACC’s claim that Clemson owes fiduciary responsibilities to the league. The ACC released a statement following the ruling: “We are pleased with today’s ruling as it confirms that only a North Carolina court can render a decision that would apply to both Clemson and Florida State. … As the court found, Clemson does not challenge whether the ACC Grant of Rights is valid or enforceable. This recognizes the ACC’s consistent position that the 2013 and 2016 Grant of Rights are valid and enforceable agreements that each of our members entered into voluntarily, with full knowledge of their terms.” (link)

While it’s unclear how Florida State’s new 10-year multimedia rights deal with Sixth Street-owned Legends “may affect the private capital conversations between the two sides, it highlights one aspect of the ongoing talks between many schools/conferences and institutional funds looking to invest in college sports,” according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, who adds: “Many of those firms are looking to provide capital—and reap benefits on the back end—but they’re also pitching their strategic experience. Sixth Street, as an example, owns Legends, which has deep experience with managing the various ways pro and college teams commercialize their rights … Financial specifics of the Legends relationship weren’t included in the formal announcement, which does not mention Sixth Street by name. The deal does not involve Sixth Street’s private capital team, a spokesman for the firm said in an email. A representative for FSU didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.” (link)

Illinois intends to phase out the Athletic Facilities Student Fee over the coming years, thereby eliminating the fee from the athletic department’s budget. The fee currently comprises $34.63 of the $313 General Fee assessed to students each semester and generates approximately $3.44M in revenue for the department. Illini AD Josh Whitman: "Our staff has worked diligently to put the athletic program on strong financial footing, but change across our industry is accelerating. As a result of the pending legal settlement that has been well publicized, we are preparing for the opportunity for DIA to invest meaningful resources directly into the pockets of our student-athletes. Although the use of the student fee is compartmentalized for facilities, we want to avoid any suggestion that our student body is underwriting more expansive economic benefits for their fellow students. With so much about our financial model being reimagined, now is the right time to make this change." (link)

Some Penn State trustees and alumni are pushing back on the Nittany Lions’ planned $700M renovation to Beaver Stadium. “They challenge the school’s rosy financial forecasts for the project and point to the still-uncertain impact of new rules allowing player endorsement deals and revenue-share payments,” according to the Wall Street Journal’s Melissa Korn. Anthony Lubrano, one of two trustees who voted against the renovation proposal in May, says: There has to be some responsible adult in the room who says we just can’t afford to do this.” In its stadium plan, PSU predicts annual athletic expenses will increase by 2.5% over the next 30 years, which Korn notes is less than half the rate they have risen in the past decade. “The school also budgets minimal outlays for other sports construction projects. The university anticipates that the athletic department will likely record a $44M surplus 30 years after the renovation.” Alumni trustee Jay Paterno, son of former Football HC Joe Paterno, is among those who argue the math is unrealistic. “It’s hard to project 30 months, even 30 weeks, let alone 30 years. You don’t want to be the most leveraged university in this new world.” More. (link)

Baylor Football HC Dave Aranda’s explanation for the Bears’ recent success on the recruiting trail is simple: “We’re paying players.” Asked in a follow-up during Big 12 Media Days if that’s really all there is to it, Aranda replied: “Yes.” Aranda in November admitted that he was part of the reason why the Bears were initially behind on NIL efforts, explaining: “I think the way it stands right now just with our record and with the amount of freshmen that are playing on our team. …. We are kind of the perfect example of a team to be poached [by other teams]. So, all that’s in play right now and is happening right now and is something that I’m spending a lot of time on. So, whether that’s NIL for the guys on our team and getting that to where that is way competitive. And then, for guys that are coming in, and that are going to be on our team and all that, I think it’s something that is a major focus.” (link)

The 10 schools that left the Pac-12 will play in Pac-12-affiliated bowls the next two seasons rather than bowl tie-ins with their new conferences, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who adds: “How the Pac-12 bowls will be filled remains unknown. Because the teams would be chosen from different conferences, the selection order likely won't be based on conference records. The Alamo Bowl has the first pick from the Big 12 and Pac-12 after the College Football Playoff. It will be able to select any Pac-12 legacy school or Oregon State/Washington State, regardless of record as long as the teams are bowl-eligible.” (link)

The NBA and network executives have finalized contracts that will make NBC and Amazon Prime Video new partners, while maintaining ABC/ESPN as the home of the NBA Finals, per the Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who notes the agreements are for 11 seasons and are worth $76B. Marchand also points out that “while the NBA and its partner agreed to all the language, incumbent TNT Sports continues to threaten to match. The CEO of TNT Sports’ parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, has publicly stated he may attempt to use language in the current contract to remain involved with the NBA. If Zaslav goes through with that, he is expected to target Amazon’s package. … The board of governors has meetings Tuesday in Las Vegas. At some point following the final step by the league’s governors, the NBA will send the finished contracts to TNT Sports. At that point, the company will have five days to make its move. If it declines, then the NBA is expected to make an official announcement before the Olympics, which open on July 26th.” (link)
