Houston is expected to begin formal interviews for its AD post as early as this weekend, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, who reports New Mexico AD Eddie Nunez, College of Charleston AD Matt Roberts and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment GM David Fletcher have emerged during the early vetting process. However, Duarte adds: “This is not a complete list as UH is expected to cast a wide net that includes candidates with varying experience and background. … [UH President Renu] Khator favors a ‘non-traditional AD’ and ‘outside-the-box’ candidate who would use a business model to run the athletic department, according to the sources, while several prominent members of the selection committee prefer a candidate who has proven credentials as a college athletics administrator.” Duarte further reports that Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey, who previously served as a Deputy AD for the Cougars, had not been contacted as of late this week. “One source said Dickey would be an ideal candidate because of his familiarity with the school and his success as a fundraiser. Jack Moore, the retired former president and CEO of Cameron International Corporation, and Ricky Craven, senior vice president and deputy general counsel for Allstate, are two influential members of the selection committee, sources said. Both members of the UH System Board of Regents were key players in the most recent contract negotiations with men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson.” Meanwhile, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark offers some solicited advice to the Cougars: “In today’s world…I just think as they consider the next chapter of collegiate athletics, it requires diversified skill sets. Would it be great if they could find someone that has institutional knowledge, but also brings the business knowledge with it in combination? That would be ideal. We’re in a business of value creation right now, not only at the conference but the schools. How do you build your brand? How do you build your business? Having someone that understands that, as well as the other nuances, I think is critically important.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen comments on potential roster limits, budget considerations & more with The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. On a potential Football scholarship cap: “The deeper question, is it a 365-day-a-year number, or is it going to be governed and regulated like it is today? [...] But the idea that if this school is scholar-shipping 120, then I have to scholarship 120, I think that’s a fallacy. To think that your program is going to be better because you’re hoarding talent between 85 and 120 — if the transfer portal has shown anything, it’s shown that kids are going to go someplace where they have a chance to play. [...] Cost containment is something that we have to worry about on our own campuses. And so I do hope that’s how (roster limits) play out.” The latest from Dannen on NIL: “Regardless of how people view NIL, it is an important part of the athletic scene today. If you do not have a partner in your collective, you’re behind and you’re going to continue to fall further behind.” (link)

Freshly minted Stetson AD Ricky Ray talks with The Daytona Beach News-Journal’s Chris Vinel about his first two months on the job and says of his immediate priorities: “First of all, just trying to get my arms around the Edmunds Center project — where we are with it, what we need to finish it. We’ve looked at the plan as a whole, and we shifted around some things. We’ve looked at the Wilson Athletic Center, which is next door, as a possible opportunity to grow our student-athlete offerings. Do some things for the student-athlete experience, utilizing that space that is already there. Very minimal changes. So really just trying to look at everything we have to see how we can use the existing space to better serve our student-athletes now and use that to guide what we do need to accomplish moving forward. That’s been a lot. Moving forward, looking at how we’re set up staffing-wise. Can we do the things we need to do for today’s student-athletes with everything going on?” Ray also acknowledges that the Hatters “have to dive in on the external side in all of our sports. … We need more revenue with the House settlement, so how do we do that? Ticket revenue is a great way to do that while increasing the experience of the games. It makes it more fun. We have a good setup in football with (Spec Martin Municipal Stadium). So the sky is the limit on what we can do there. I think that’s going to be key as we grow over the next couple, three years, to really grow that, maybe add some names to the schedule that people will be interested to see.” Full Q&A. (link)

South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Perry H. Gravely ruled that Clemson’s suit against the ACC can proceed in Pickens County court. In his ruling, Gravely stated that the Tigers did enough to show the ACC can be sued in South Carolina but rejected a Clemson argument about sovereign immunity and whether the South Carolina entity could be sued elsewhere. The ACC subsequently released the following statement: “We are pleased with the dismissal of Clemson’s sovereign immunity claim and are disappointed with the other two rulings,” the ACC said in a statement. “The ACC will continue to focus on protecting the best interests of our membership.” (link); The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau notes that North Carolina Business Court Judge Louis Bledsoe earlier this month warned of "procedural" chaos if “three judges in different states all had a hand in Clemson and Florida State's dispute with the ACC over the conference's grant of rights and its withdrawal penalty. Only a North Carolina court, in Bledsoe's opinion, can interpret the contract in a consistent manner. But Gravely did not concern himself with Bledsoe's ruling, nor the ACC's argument that he should dismiss the South Carolina case in deference to what's transpiring across the border. He bought Clemson's argument that the conference conducts business in South Carolina, and his court has jurisdiction.” Gravely: “I believe the difference between (a court in) Charlotte and Upstate South Carolina is not significant.” (link)

The Women's Basketball Committee this week approved a move to quadrant-based team sheets in 2024-25 and to provide the full championship field seed list on Selection Sunday. The committee also announced that Indianapolis will play host to a joint championships event for all three divisions in 2028 and named Milwaukee AD Amanda Braun as vice chair and chair for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, respectively. The “2024-25 NET rank quadrant ranges for women's basketball were based on the expected winning percentage versus a given opponent rank (in NET) with respect to game location, across all games. The ranges will be classified as quadrant one (home 1-25, neutral 1-35 and away 1-45); quadrant two (home 26-55, neutral 36-65 and away 46-80); quadrant three (home 56-90, neutral 66-105 and away 81-130) and quadrant four (home 91-plus, neutral 106-plus and away 131-plus). The committee also voted to remove ‘conference record’ and ‘non-conference record’ from the championship selection criteria, noting that the existing criteria of ‘overall record’ is inclusive of that information.” VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman: "There has been overwhelming membership and fan support for bringing back the joint championships, and we are proud to announce the next one taking place in 2028. Indianapolis has proven to be a great site for hosting the joint championships format in the past. We know that it will again be a tremendous celebration of women's basketball across all three divisions." More, including the full committee for 2024-25. (link)

The Competition Oversight Committee last month approved adding wins and ties against the top 25 and top 50 in the adjusted RPI and ties and losses against teams below 150 in the adjusted RPI as primary criteria for women’s soccer. The committee also approved a measure to add results against teams ranked 51-100 as secondary criteria. “These criteria will allow the Women’s Soccer Committee to increase transparency with the membership as it explains where the committee places its greatest importance.” Additionally, the COC approved changing the “bonus/penalty structure in the RPI to a bonus for wins and ties against teams ranked 1-25, a lesser bonus for wins and ties against teams ranked 26-50 for all games, and the lowest bonus for wins only against teams ranked 51-100. Also, penalties would be changed for ties and losses to teams ranked 151-250 and a more significant penalty would be assessed for losses and ties to teams ranked below 250. Additionally, ties will count for one-third of a win instead of one-half of a win (which is what the men’s committee has already been approved to do and reflects how ties are typically valued and treated in conference standings). The penalties and bonuses would apply to non-conference contests only, as is currently done.” (link)

LSU’s Tiger Athletic Foundation has created a new subsidiary, TAF Services Corporation (TAFSC), “which entered a paid services agreement with the LSU-driven NIL collective Bayou Traditions,” per On3’s Pete Nakos, who notes that through the agreement TAFSC will provide fundraising services for the collective. Tiger Athletic Foundation President/CEO Matt Borman: “This partnership allows Bayou Traditions access to first-class fundraising, events and stewardship services. LSU student-athletes will benefit greatly from Bayou Traditions’ focus on enhanced NIL opportunities while achieving greater efficiency and fundraising success through resources made available by TAFSC.” To start the partnership, all contributions to Bayou Traditions through the Give 100 campaign commemorating the 100th anniversary of Tiger Stadium will receive four priority points per $1,000 contributed. Nakos: “Donors will have the opportunity to receive corresponding membership benefits and Tiger Athletic Foundation priority points. This does not mean that contributions to Bayou Traditions are charitable donations.” (link)

The NCAA has released a statement on yesterday’s Johnson ruling, which reads: “Our focus remains on the ongoing effort we are leading to modernize college sports. The NCAA is expanding core guaranteed benefits for student- athletes to include health insurance, scholarships, academic counseling, mental health support, and career preparation. The Association is also advancing a proposal to allow schools to deliver far greater direct financial benefits to student-athletes. In modernizing college sports, student-athlete leadership from all three divisions agree that college athletes should not be forced into an employment model, which they expect will harm their experiences and needlessly cost countless student-athletes opportunities in women's sports, Olympic sports, and sports at the HBCU and Division II and Division III levels. We look forward to working with all stakeholders – including Congress – to continue to promote needed changes in the best interest of all student-athletes." (link)

Incoming Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy says the Bulldogs will likely participate in revenue sharing “at some level. I actually don't start till July 23 and we're speaking on July 9, so I haven't done a deep dive into the budget yet because I think that's going to determine a lot of things. But the reality is it doesn't matter if you have Michigan's budget or Fresno State’s budget or any other budget. There's a need for revenue, and so I think you always have to be creative looking for revenue streams. And [with] the permissive cap you get from the House settlement, there's a lot of factors to be determined. Is Title IX going to be applied to it? It looks like the $2B going back the last six years may go [to] a higher percentage of football and men's basketball players than everyone else because they're responsible for a lot of the TV revenue but we don't know how that's going to be applied moving forward. If there’s a 50-50 split, there's going to have to be different approaches.” In discussing the disparate business models between college and pro sports, Klassy says: “Your greatest data piece that I've seen and verified is that college athletic departments make $0.45 to the dollar to professional sports teams and how they monetize all their assets. So, we're going to look creatively. How do we rent out our facilities? How do we license and trademark our brand? How do we partner with other organizations to utilize our facilities. … I hope that we already have an athletic corporation set up that’s a 501(c)(3) and hopefully that gives us some advantages, but I don't know that. I have to lift up the hood and really look for those advantages, but we can't leave money on the table, that’s the bottom line.” More. (link)

Colorado AD Rick George says of joining the Big 12: “It’s great to be in a position where there is stability; we know where we’re going to be for (at least) seven years.” George also talks about the passion in the Big 12 and says: “Every game that we go to in men’s basketball will be sold out and most every game that we play in football will be sold out. That’s the kind of enthusiasm that that league has for their teams. We won’t get any of the away tickets (for games at Folsom Field) back because they’re going to purchase them all and come because Boulder is a great destination.” George on Commissioner Brett Yormark: “He’s got a lot of energy. He’s very enthusiastic about the Big 12 Conference and what it can do. And, you know, you need a leader like that, that’s got the energy, that can have the contacts that he has. He likes to make deals, and he’s really good at it.” (link)

The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker analyzes the arguments that can be made for both the ACC and Big 12 to claim the third spot in the pecking order among Power 4 conferences. When it comes to football success, the Big 12 can argue it has more depth, but historical success leans to the ACC. Six members have won at least one national championship in the AP poll era (since 1936). Only BYU, TCU and Colorado have won or shared a national title among Big 12 members.” From a money standpoint, Baker observes: “[ACC Commissioner Jim] Phillips was right when he said the ACC was third. [...] According to the leagues’ latest tax returns, the ACC paid out an average of $44.8M to its football members. The Big 12 was slightly behind at $44.2M. Those numbers will change when the Big 12′s next TV contract starts in 2025.” (link)

Kansas announces the second phase of the Allen Fieldhouse renovation will be completed in time for the 2024-25 men’s hoops season. Per a KU release: “Concourses on the top two levels of the venue will be completely renovated and overhauled, updating the areas with a more accessible and modernized layout. Allen Fieldhouse will feature a new center-hung videoboard that boasts two under screens that will make it easier for fans at lower levels to see the action and information on the scoreboard. There will also be two corner videoboards added, allowing for more statistical information throughout the game in partnership with ShotTracker's innovative technology. Additionally, inside the venue, 1,100 chairback seats will be added on the west side of the Fieldhouse. With the addition of more chairbacks and the corner videoboards, which will replace the upper corner bleacher seating, combined with additional ADA seating, the new capacity at Allen Fieldhouse will be 15,300. New and enhanced hospitality areas will be showcased throughout Allen Fieldhouse including a significantly renovated and newly named Crimson Club (formerly the donor atrium) with expanded capacity that will now connect directly to the concourse of the venue.” (link)

UCF earlier this week issued an RFP seeking an investment banking firm for the issuance of up to $30M in Stadium Revenue Bonds to help fund the $88M renovation of FBC Mortgage Stadium. According to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, the RFP’s winning bidder is expected to be chosen by early August. McCormick adds: “UCF Stadium Corp. took on a $70M loan to help fund the renovation project, with the $30M in bond proceeds expected to cover the remaining costs. The bonds will be secured in part by a lien on operating and non-operating revenues, including ticket sales, food and beverage, catering, novelties, premium seating, advertising, and sponsorships.” (link)

La Salle’s renovation of John Glaser Arena features technology upgrades from ANC, including a new center-hung videoboard, audio system, dynamic lighting, and in-game production components, per SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who reports: “The new 4mm centerhung LED board features four sides each measuring 9 feet high by 16 feet wide. New 6mm LED vomitory displays, a 40-foot courtside display, and LED basket stanchions offer new inventory for gameday experience content and sponsorship, the latter of which ANC will help sell on the Atlantic 10 school’s behalf. ANC overhauled the venue’s audio system, lighting, and in-game production setup with the help of Cooper Lighting Solutions and Ephesus Sports Lighting.” (link)
