Florida State is unlikely to find a landing spot in the Big Ten or SEC if it’s successful in leaving the ACC and the ACC stays intact, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who says leagues have multiple concerns with adding the Seminoles. Those reasons, per sources, “include the fact that it doesn’t make financial sense for either league, ‘there’s no appetite for more expansion’ and FSU has shown ‘it’s not a good partner.’” McMurphy adds: “Three SEC presidents recently told Action Network they had ‘no interest’ in adding Florida State. It takes 12 of the 16 SEC presidents to favor adding another school. The Big Ten also is not interested in the Seminoles, sources said.” Another source says: “[Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Petitti] is staying away from expansion, and we’re taking Tony’s lead.” Added another: “Why would anyone want to expedite more chaos by adding Florida State?” McMurphy also quotes a source as saying: “If the ACC blows up, who picks first [between the Big Ten and SEC]? Who picks second? If there is a need and desire to expand, you take inventory so your competitors don’t get it. But the presidents and chancellors are looking for stability. Despite what the social media geniuses are suggesting, no one – the leagues, the networks – is driving expansion.” (link); Ovies + Giglio’s Joe Ovies: “FSU is more likely to secure private equity money and go independent with a Big 12 scheduling arrangement until the entire world of college football changes in 2030.” (link)

Title IX rules will apply if/when colleges begin sharing revenue with student-athletes, according to U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights Asst. Secretary Catherine Lhamon, who tells ESPN: "Schools must provide equal athletic opportunities based on sex, including with respect to benefits, opportunities, publicity, and recruitment, and must not discriminate in the provision of financial aid. In the new NIL environment, these same principles apply." According to ESPN’s Paula Lavigne and Dan Murphy, the department “did not answer a question about whether the revenue share dollars would be deemed financial aid, which would be required to be distributed to men and women athletes proportionally based on roster spots. To date, every dollar a school provides directly to its athletes has been intended to cover educational expenses and thus has been considered financial aid.” Lhamon also addresses using third parties to funnel university money to student-athletes for endorsement activities. "As has been true all these decades, Title IX requires schools to ensure that when accepting and using private donations, the schools do not create disparities in benefits, opportunities, and treatment on the basis of sex that result in the denial of athletic opportunities. Likewise, Title IX prohibits schools from providing significant assistance to any outside organization that discriminates on the basis of sex. These core Title IX principles operate unchanged today." Athletes.org has hired Ice Miller Strategies to lobby on issues related to NIL rights for student-athletes and other issues in college athletics, according to The Hill’s Taylor Giorno, who notes that Jarrod Loadholt, former senior counsel for the House Financial Services Committee, will work on the account and says: “We are incredibly excited to partner with Athletes.Org as we work together to help shape the future of college sports. The House settlement will transform college sports, and federal policymakers will weigh in heavily on everything from the NCAA’s antitrust exemption, to Name, Image, and Likeness, to labor and employment issues. The voices of college athletes have to be at the table as Washington debates the path forward post-House, and our partnership with AO will help to ensure that the voices of athletes are heard.” (link)

Utah State Football HC Blake Anderson has responded to the school’s notice of intent to part ways. Anderson’s attorney, Tom Mars: “On behalf of Coach Anderson, we submitted a 70-page response to USU’s Athletics Director earlier today. As a courtesy to the university, we won’t be commenting or releasing the response at least so long as coach Anderson is still employed by USU.” Former Deputy AD for External Affairs Jerry Bovee last week also released a statement concerning his departure: “As many know, I was recently terminated by Utah State University. Currently, I am focused on filing a grievance pursuant to USU policy within 30 days of termination as I vigorously defend my reputation as a loyal Aggies alum and stellar Associate Vice President & Deputy Athletics Director. With decades of athletic leadership under my belt, I am a proven and firm supporter of Title X civil rights law. In my tenured career, I am proud to say I have never incurred disciplinary action or accusations of misconduct of any kind.” (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart addressed the number of speeding, reckless driving and other vehicle-related issues over the past 18 months, explaining at SEC Media Days that the problem has persisted despite proactive and punitive measures, including announcing the dismissal of student-athlete David Daniel-Sisavanh. Smart also revealed that UGA players have had 162 instances in which they’ve heard from coaches, administrators and speakers in team environments about the dangers of speeding, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He also noted that players have incurred “substantial fines” from the Classic City Collective: “That’s not something that’s new. That’s something that’s been ongoing outside of my jurisdiction that they decided to implement and have done for a considerable amount.” (link, link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter on collectives issuing fines to student-athletes: “While they’re free to do so, there are potential legal issues (for collectives and schools) that could come along with that.” (link)

Wisconsin unveils revealed details and renderings for premium seating options at the Kohl Center with the 2024-25 season. Amenities included with the premium seating options include access to a new premium club space on the event level, the Krantz Club (beginning in Jan. 2025), all-inclusive premium food and non-alcoholic beverage, a full-service cash bar, wider, padded, premium seating, and enhanced parking priority. UW is also reducing the size of the ice sheet, as the Kohl Center was one of only five DI ice hockey arenas with a rink size larger than 200-by-92 feet. Reducing the size gives the venue’s operators six more feet with which to create rink-side seating for hockey (134 seats) and club seating (188) behind the team benches for basketball. Wildcats Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Daniel Nunes: "Hosting our home games along the shore of Lake Michigan allows us to provide our fans with a truly unique and scenic gameday experience. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork explains the Buckeyes’ process for updating the football facilities inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and notes: “We are out of space. We need more efficient space. We need more room in a lot of areas. It’s really not that we’re adding a lot of bells and whistles, we’re adding functional, teaching spaces that make the players better, that make the timing better. So, we want to be aggressive in the summer and fall. Maybe we’ll announce something publicly in early 2025, but the plan is to really get a lot of information, talk to a lot of donors about some lead gifts and so we’ll do all that prep work this summer and fall.” (link)

North Carolina Central AD Skip Perkins received an extension in March that could keep him in Durham through May 31, 2029, according to CollegeAD. Perkins’ $193K salary will remain unchanged but can be adjusted by NCCU’s chancellor. Perkins is also eligible for a $5K bonus should the Eagles win the MEAC in football, men’s basketball or women’s basketball as well as $2K for any other conference titles. Those figures are up over the $3,500 and $1,500 bonuses Perkins could receive in his previous contract, respectively. Perkins can also earn $5K for a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or higher and exceeding a 930 APR. Should NCCU terminate the contract, Perkins would be owed his remaining base pay for the remainder of the deal. (link)

“There seems to be momentum toward the Mountain West cooling on inclusion of Oregon State and Washington State,” according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who adds: “The Mountain West has a scheduling agreement with both teams for the 2024 season with a mutual option to continue the partnership in 2025. Might as well make that a Mountain West option because it's becoming clear the conference doesn't necessarily need or even want the Beavers and Cougars on a full-time membership basis.” In fact, Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould remarks: "I don't know if the Mountain West thinks they need these two schools, honestly. I would imagine If and when those conversations ever take place it's going to be based in part on the economics of the decision and what they bring to the table. The intent is to have a decision [2025] before we start this football season. There is so much riding on that in terms of future media rights, recruiting decisions, all those things." The reasons for the conference’s “cooling” on the Beavers and Ducks include College Football Playoff expansion and questions about how much new revenue the schools would bring to the league via media rights, among others. Dodd: “The addition of Oregon State and Washington State would mean only a 10% to 15% increase in the current Mountain West deal, according to one veteran industry source with experience in television negotiations. LJC Media President/CEO Jim Williams says: "I don't think it will be that much. I would think more like 10 [percent]. Fifteen percent is way too much." More from Dodd. (link)

Loyola Marymount AD Craig Pintens joined D1.ticker Founder/CEO Matt Roberts from the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss the potential House settlement and projecting and preparing for change, including what are non-negotiables as the industry changes. Pintens also offers his perspective on communicating changes to staff and coaches, identifying the right talent for job openings, investing strategically and more. Pintens believes it already is more difficult to find candidates in an industry undergoing so much change. “I don't think that we have the same quality of candidates experience-wise for positions that we might have had five or 10 years ago. We've had too many people leave, and we've had too many people leave in the middle – middle management-type positions. So the director of compliance, director of marketing, maybe a notch below your senior staff, those people have left. So then when the senior staff has moved on…you're now having to fill that position with somebody who maybe isn’t quite ready and it's creating entry-level opportunities that are unprecedented in this industry. … If you’re thinking this is a position where we normally would get four to six years experience, we want to see X, Y and Z on the resume, you’re probably only going to get two to three years of experience, and you might only get X and half of Y.” Pintens goes on to say college athletics has “long underpaid” because demand to get into the industry has been high. “With fewer people wanting to do it, maybe our wages need to increase.” Lots more on Collegiate Sports Connect. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg takes a look inside Northwestern’s decision to build a temporary space to play football games while Ryan Field is rebuilt, and Wildcats Deputy AD/Asst. VP for Development Jesse Marks says while the cost does not register as a major facilities project, constructing the temporary stadium is still “really expensive.” But, he explains, the pitch to donors wasn't difficult, especially when they learned about Football HC David Braun’s six-figure contribution. Rittenberg notes the “key selling points included how the stadium would impact athletes on game days, as well as the campus, which has been through a turbulent year, beginning with the hazing scandal that led to [former HC Pat] Fitzgerald's firing and dozens of lawsuits against the school, and continuing with protests around the Israel-Gaza conflict.” Marks: "It's easy for me to say our student-athletes are going to be able to finish their games, go into their locker room 100 feet away, and go out and join their parents instantaneously instead of three hours later. And then the other side is it's not just athletics. This is going to connect the whole campus. We need more of that right now." Revenue-wise, Rittenberg points out that the temporary field, Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, “will feature nearly double the amount of premium seating area as Ryan Field did, and 16 semi-private suites, which will help offset the revenue loss of the much smaller venue.” Lots more. Some Big 12 football coaches believe the sport could benefit from having a commissioner in charge, including Oklahoma State HC Mike Gundy, who said during last week’s Media Days: “If you have a college football commissioner who works with conference leaders, they all work together. Now, there will be give-and-take, so some commissioners might not want to do that; some will say, ‘I have more than you, so why would I want to do that?’ Because it’s better for college football.” Utah HC Kyle Whittingham believes that “we’re going down that road. You’ll see that in the next 21 months to four years. That’s going to happen. Two super conferences will evolve or emerge and you will see them break away from the NCAA and govern themselves. It’ll be more of a minor-league NFL model.” Meanwhile, UCF AD Terry Mohajir says: “I don’t think it’s necessary. As long as the [Power Four] commissioners are on the same page, I think the management of that is fine. I think if you do that, then it creates another level of governance, and we probably don’t even streamline governance as much as we can. We need to all be on the same page. But if we have one, that’s fine, and we’re willing to adapt to it.” (link)

CBS’ Gary Parrish explains why this year’s Peach Jam is the most “stress-free Peach Jam in history,” as one men’s basketball coach put it. Parrish notes that “outside of the super-elite prep prospects who project as future one-and-done lottery picks, every high-major staff can reasonably assume that somebody three or four years older and two or three times better equipped to impact winning immediately than the majority of the high school prospects they're watching this month will be available once the transfer portal opens after Selection Sunday.” Mississippi State HC Chris Jans tells Parrish: "Unless you're a program that's gonna recruit all portal-kids, you're still gonna want to sign some good high school players – but you just don't have to sign as many anymore. So the pressure probably isn't as fierce as it once was for the whole staff.” Baylor HC Scott Drew agrees that everyone is being more selective in the high school prospects they recruit. “Used to be, if we needed a big class, we [felt like we had to] get six high school kids. Now, no one feels that way. If we can get the right ones, we might sign three or four. But it's not like we're signing four early, you know? It's made it harder for every high-schooler." USC HC Eric Musselman, meanwhile, points out that “sometimes you take [high school prospects] because they're like rookies [in the NBA] – they're cheaper. You take them to fill out your roster." OneTeam Partners is looking to launch a $75M fund to invest in early-stage businesses that support athletes, according to Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams, who report: “The group is currently seeking a general partner for the venture fund, according to a deck that was viewed by Sportico. OneTeam is hoping to leverage its expertise, its access to deal flow and its deep connections to some of the world’s most famous celebrities to help grow businesses and share in the upside. The fund, called OneTeam Ventures, will target a portfolio of about 12 companies, with an average investment of about $5M, the deck says. It will collect a 2.5% annual management fee on capital, plus a 20% performance fee on returns over a designated benchmark. … The ownership (and fees) will be split between OneTeam and the general partner, which the deck says could be an established sports investor or an investor new to sports looking for exposure in a new sector. OneTeam CEO Sean Sansiveri said via telephone that the company is evaluating whether to proceed with the fund, adding he sees ‘great value’ in how OneTeam is positioned.” (link)
