According to The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, “another name to keep an eye on in Houston’s athletic director search – Keli Zinn, the executive deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at LSU. Zinn has been at LSU since 2022. She previously spent 12 years at West Virginia, including as interim AD.” (link)

Illinois AD Josh Whitman talks potential House settlement & if it could lead to the Illini cutting any sport programs: “It puts us in a position where we’re evaluating every line item in our budget, trying to find those dollars so we can make that strategic investment and at this moment, kind of like when we were in COVID. We’re not foreclosing any options and so there’s a lot of different levers at our disposal and one of them is which sports are we sponsoring? Obviously that’s a last resort for anybody in my situation and we want to make sure we have exhausted other possibilities before we would pull on that lever.” (link)

Tulane AD David Harris joined NCAA Leadership Development Director Lamarr Pottinger at the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss the concept of “Cultural Renovation” as a new AD, which emphasizes the importance of trust and communication with a new staff. Harris and Pottinger also discuss the use of the “start, stop, keep” method when evaluating a program, the creation of a strategic plan at Northern Iowa, and the advice former Missouri AD Mike Alden shared with Harris on his first day as the Panthers’ new AD: namely, that every staff wants four things: direction, trust, hope and results. Harris: “Culture starts with having everyone all in as far as knowing that what they bring to the table is important, that they’re encouraged to be able to speak on the things they know and that we’re ultimately all pulling together in the same direction to try to do what’s best for the athletic department and student-athletes we serve.” Harris adds that he will meet with every staffer to ask them what they should stop doing, what they should start doing and what they should continue to do. “If you’re looking to renovate (the culture), you’ve got to know where you’re starting from. And so it's really helped me in that regard and I think it's also helped the staff to understand that what they have to share is important, that somebody's going to listen to what they have to say. I can't do everything that everyone wants…but people will understand that they were listened to. And at some point as a leader you have to make the decision about what’s best and you have to set a direction.” More on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

In the second of a two-part interview with Corsicana Daily Sun’s Todd Aaron Golden, Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen talks about balancing the financial outlay between facilities and student-athletes as the landscape continues to change. Christensen says the focus will always be on student-athletes, adding: “Certainly we need to make sure our facilities are up to par because we want to recruit high level student-athletes to be competitive. Are we going to spend crazy money that’s not moving the needle? No, but we’re going to invest in areas that we know that truly are going to make an impact for our athletic department, but also for our programs. I think the biggest thing is we need to have broad-based success, like some institutions, they really focus on one or two sports more in my mind. For us to be the best version of Indiana State, that goes back to the (Missouri Valley Conference) All-Sports Trophy that should be our goal.” Christensen says of the future of college sports that “we can’t just have the Big Tens and SECs do all the decision making. … The Missouri Valley is a top 10 conference. So for us to be in a top tier is a major deal for us. Do we look at adding more institutions within the Valley that’s really going to move the needle from a basketball standpoint? That’s what we really need to look at, especially from the revenue side of things with the settlement.” Lots more. (link)

Denver finished as the top I-AAA school in the overall Learfield Directors' Cup standings for the 11th straight year and the 15th time in the last 16. Pioneers AD Josh Berlo: “To comprehensively excel by bringing home 14 conference championship trophies, have nine programs proudly representing our University in NCAA Championships and to have five of those programs advance in the NCAA Tournament continues to showcase the success we're capable of on a national level. This is proof positive of the exceptional culture and tradition inside DU Athletics. We will keep raising the bar in the Ritchie Center to continue to foster our tradition of broad-based excellence." The Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman notes that Indiana’s extended partnership with Adidas is worth $54M over 10 years and “the bulk of that compensation — nearly all of it, in fact, more than $49M — will come in the form of product allotted to Indiana by Adidas on an annual basis. IU will receive $4.745M in product in the fiscal year that began July 1, with that number rising across the course of the deal before peaking at $5.045M in the contract year 2033-34, the last of the contract. Terms of the contract will also require Adidas to commit $500K annually in the first five years, and $550K annually in the last five years, on what the contract language terms ‘mutually agreed upon marketing activities.’” Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson explains that taking less in product could result in overages, resulting in the need to buy more gear from Adidas eventually anyway. “There’s no question every penny counts. We look at every dollar. When you trade off product for cash, it’s not like you say, that’s no big deal. The reality was, we felt we would be spending cash to make certain we could accommodate (product) demands moving forward. It was a pocket shift in a way. We felt we would’ve been spending money if we hadn’t increased the product line.” Osterman adds: “Ultimately, the department’s long-standing relationship added a comfort level to all the relevant factors Dolson weighed before settling on an extension. Evaluating Indiana needs from and vision for its relationship with its apparel partner, sticking with a familiar partner made, in Dolson’s estimation, the most sense.” (link)

RealResponse VP of Customer Success Parker Moye sits down with Clemson Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities, Operations, & Events Jon Allen and South Dakota Deputy AD Corey Jenkins to discuss their strategy for events, how to create memorable experiences and exceed expectations and the importance of gathering and responding to fan feedback. Jenkins on maximizing the fan experience. “You don’t want to differentiate the level of customer service you’re giving to your highest level of donor or that first-time attendee. That highest-level donor may have some different amenities that dictate the different experience in that way, but the customer service you're providing, that output should be no different. And something that we really push with our event staff and our full-time staff in the department is making sure that every interaction you have is valuable. That interaction may literally determine whether somebody has a great time at your event and wants to come back for another game or buy season tickets or become a donor or it may be the reason they say, ‘You know what, I don't think this is how I want to spend my discretionary income.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. + The Athletic’s Max Olson, Bruce Feldman and Sam Khan break down the domino effect of former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban’s retirement, which resulted in more than 400 job changes during the offseason. Starting with the Crimson Tide’s hire of then-Washington HC Kalen DeBoer, the staffs at UW, Arizona, Buffalo, San Jose State, South Alabama, UCLA and the high school level all experienced some level of turnover, and former South Alabama HC Kane Wommack says: “I remember thinking (upon hearing Saban was retiring), ‘I just hope nothing changes with my program.’” DeBoer called Wommack the next morning to get his opinion on whether he believed Wommack would be a good fit for the Tide. He then asked whether Wommack would like to be a part of the staff, and Wommack explains: “It just wasn’t an opportunity I was gonna turn down. It happened fast.” The ripple effect continued until it reached Cisco College (NJCAA), which competes in the Southwest Junior College Conference. HC Stephen Lee informed now Cisco HC Charlie Rizzio that he’d been offered a job coaching tight ends at Tarleton State. Rizzio says of his first HC role: “I guess I’ve got ole’ Nick [Saban] to thank for that.” Full breakdown. (link)

Clemson’s attorneys argue the word “is” could determine whether the Tigers are able to leave the ACC. The Post and Courier’s Jon Blau explains: “In recently revealed paragraphs of Clemson's April 17 complaint – which were previously redacted because they might contain ‘trade secrets’ – the university asserts the ACC's deal with ESPN only conveyed the broadcast rights to games played by a ‘conference institution.’ That is defined in the ESPN contract as a ‘college, university or other institution that is a member of the ACC.’ … If the Tigers left the ACC, they wouldn't be a ‘conference institution’ in the present tense – ‘is’ – as written in the ESPN deal. According to Clemson's lawyers, the ESPN contract doesn't speak to a school that ‘was’ a member.” Blau also reports that “as Clemson's lawyers have said repeatedly, a reading of the ESPN deal and ACC's grant of rights ‘together’ might shine a more favorable light on their position; that the conference can air the Tigers' games when Clemson ‘is’ a conference institution — and replays of games from when they were. The ACC doesn't, however, have the right to future games when Clemson no longer ‘is’ a conference member, the university's lawyers argue.” From Clemson’s complaint: "The Grant of Rights is not, as the ACC has claimed, a blanket grant of rights. It is explicitly limited by the ESPN agreements." More from Blau. (link)

“Nike is in a crisis,” according to Financial Times’ Sara Germano, who notes that “on June 28, the day after executives issued a dim forecast for the year ahead, its shares plummeted 20% in the single-worst day for the swoosh since its 1980 initial public offering. Consumers are not as fond of the brand’s classic shoes, such as the Air Force 1s, Air Jordan 1s and Dunks, as they used to be. Wall Street, disappointed with Nike stock that has fallen 30 per cent since the start of the year, is openly calling for ‘regime change’ in upper management.” Stifel Managing Director Jim Duffy tells Germano that Nike “took its eye off the ball” coming out of the pandemic, and “having a tech executive who came in to run a consumer product company and introduce a strategy shift, it’s proven to be the wrong approach.” One point of contention has been CEO John Donahoe’s decision to reorganize Nike into men’s, women’s and kids’ categories instead of divisions devoted to individual sports, and “one longtime employee, who left the company voluntarily during Donahoe’s tenure, said the MLB [uniform] fiasco ‘would never have happened’ when Nike’s internal structure had focused teams for each sport.” Meanwhile, On’s market share of DTC customers under the age of 30 has risen from 24% in 2021 to 29%, and Duffy explains the growth is underscored not only by On’s popularity with younger consumers, but also wider growth in athletic brands among older adults, a trend that Nike has missed. “Traditionally that sweet spot was the 15- to 35-year-old age bracket. But a lot of older adults are now wearing sneakers to work, sneakers traveling, embracing that smart-casual look.” More. (link)

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy takes a big-picture look at what professional leagues are doing to prevent game fixing, illegal betting, and the sharing of inside info and observes: “The strictest bans appear in the NFL. No one in the nation’s richest league is allowed to bet on league games or events, such as the draft and combine – period. Everyone besides the players is prohibited from legally betting on other sports.” While punishments vary by infraction across all leagues, McCarthy notes: “Although some people in the industry are willing to risk it all in the cases where expulsion is the punishment, for the most part this ultimate consequence keeps many stakeholders from crossing the few hard lines the leagues draw. And while any suspension will pose an issue, for many in pro leagues, is losing a year of play and salary enough to dissuade people from testing the limits? (Comparatively, Tommy John surgery could take out a pitcher for far longer than a single season, after all.) With relatively lax penalties—in some cases, simply fines—the people governed by these policies often find these outcomes palatable enough to risk.” Declan Hill, author of The Insider’s Guide to Match-Fixing in Football, tells McCarthy that many athletes are gambling addicts and believes leagues should ban all gambling. “The NFL and all leagues need to take a long, hard look in the mirror because they’re dancing with the devil. More fans are looking at the sports product and saying, ‘Did that really happen? Or am I watching something scripted?’ As soon as you get to that point, you will see people switching off.” (link)

New Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sat down with the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs to discuss a myriad of issues facing the marketplace & the Buckeyes. Bjork on the industry’s structure: “Perhaps we need to rethink that, and say, ‘Hey, look, there's a place for everybody.’ It doesn't mean we won’t play each other, but how do we come to this spot where they can chase something and we can chase something based on the economic realities of where we are. … We need to work at the NCAA level to figure out more of a sort of demarcation within Division I and what that means. If we do the work and we're purposeful about it, that's where Toledo and Bowling Green, that's where they can thrive, because those are great programs.” On potential March Madness expansion: “[You want] the Cinderella stories. We want that. I just think that giving more opportunities and more content is what people want. TV partners want more content, and if you expand the tournament, you add more games. [...] People want more live sports content. The value of live sports content, especially in college athletics … we hear all these conversations about how we’re undervalued. OK, if that's the case, let's give more content out there and let's drive this value proposition that we keep talking about. I think there's a window. Do you have to get too big? No.” More. (link)

Hawaii AD Craig Angelos talks about a number of topics with Mountain West Connection’s Mike Wittmann, including how his previous experience as an AD informs his current approach. “There is no textbook for being an athletic director. Each institution is like a very challenging puzzle, and finding the pieces that fit together to maximize the organization’s potential is essential. Sometimes, those puzzles also have missing pieces or even multiple of the same pieces, and you have to go out and make it work. … At Hawai’i, I am applying the lessons I’ve learned while also tailoring my approach to fit the culture and needs of the department and university.” Angelos also describes how the job has changed with the advent of NIL: “The biggest challenge for athletic directors with the introduction of NIL is balancing the enhancement of student-athlete initiatives while meeting overall department needs. NIL can dilute the limited resources available at any institution. However, the goal remains to maintain and ideally increase support in both areas. It’s another avenue of support for our student-athletes. I think overall, it’s crucial to adopt a mindset where all boats rise together – where 1+1 can equal 3.” On having teams that compete in different conferences: “It allows us to learn best practices from each league and collaborate with great leaders like [Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly and Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez]. … I really enjoy working with the Presidents and athletic directors in both leagues. I take a lot of notes because of the insights each of them provides.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates VP Dr. Brad Bates sits down with Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton to learn more about Fenton’s journey to the commissioner's chair and reflect on their shared time at Miami (OH). Fenton also discusses his original career aspiration – becoming a collegiate hockey coach – including his experience writing letters to several DI hockey programs before connecting with RedHawks then-HC Rico Blasi and moving to Oxford as a volunteer assistant coach while attending grad school. Fenton touches on the work-life balance as a commissioner: “But you really immerse your kind of family life within the campus culture and the athletic culture when you work in an athletics department, I think that that works best. And so it wasn't just that Josh worked at Miami University and I went to the games and I was gone. When I went to games, a lot of times it was our family engaged in and around the athletics events.” Still, Fenton acknowledges that “you miss things. There are moments when I've missed things where it's really bothered me but then you also know that that's part of it. But then you prioritize, even maybe at the sacrifice of some things professionally, being involved obviously in their activities.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Alabama Deputy AD for External Jessica Paré and Learfield SVP/Head of Content Grant Jones join AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2024 NACDA Convention to share insight into the first year of a 15-year multimedia rights relationship, which includes the creation of an original content platform and NIL hub. Jones and Paré discuss the collaborative nature of the partnership, including how their teams evaluate their whiteboard of ideas, current content-creation trends and the metrics for success that define the value of a piece of content. Paré and Jones also reflect on the role storytelling plays for the Crimson Tide in terms of fan engagement, NIL partnerships and revenue generation opportunities. Jones explains that at the beginning of every sales cycle “we say to Jess and her team and the rest of the athletic department what are the priorities for you? What are the stories you all want to tell? Because you got a new football coach, there's a woman on the gymnastics team that’s actually going to be in the Olympics this summer – what are the stories that you want to tell? And we then work with them to figure out how do we tell those stories? … You have to balance those stories with how you monetize it, so that's the certain proactive approach.” Full conversation. Memphis Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway on “The Big Podcast with Shaq” told his former Orlando Magic teammate his take on NIL and pegged Shaquille O’Neal’s potential haul at LSU during his playing days at $4M-$5M: “We're in a world right now where it's happening, it's here, there's nothing you can do about it. And it's survival of the fittest. You have to have a fan base that understands that you have to have the donors and the (Memphis) Rebounders and the boosters that understand. You have to have a president and an AD that believe in it and understand it. So it's a whole thing now. And it's not about hooping anymore, Shaq. Who knows what you would've gotten coming out of LSU now. That would've been crazy numbers.” Hardaway on if there needs to be a NIL governing body: “I would love that, because there should be a governing body. I think what's making the boosters and the donors around the country frown is because they can give a guy 5, 6, 800K, and he could have the best year of his life. But if someone offers him $2 million next year, he's gone. And that's what's the problem is with college sports right now.” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy on the future of revenue sharing: “I think the two decisions that, well there will be a lot of them, the two decisions will be one, how does Title IX play into this. And then two, what will your ability be to go and get actual outside NIL income to raise those numbers even higher (than whatever comes to players from the $22 million). … We, in my opinion, are in a little bit different time and generation with these players. Based on, at this time next year, we’re going to be talking about employees. I know they’re not going to call them that. But when your university is paying them, they’re employees. They just don’t have a contract yet.” A number of football student-athletes chimed in at Big 12 media days, with Pokes’ linebacker Nick Martin saying: “It is definitely dope. I think it will have its cons and pros. Pros will be you’re getting more money, and cons will be you get looked at as an employee now. But it takes away from the amateur aspect of it. Where it is like the last time you get to play a team sport as an amateur and just really not worry about the business side when it comes to ball… Now you got some different type of expectations. I mean that is what life is going to be after football. So, I mean it could be a pro and a con, really depend on how you look at it.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a look at a new generation of college sports administrators, many of whom have familiar names. “College sports is so often a family affair, with sons and daughters of coaches often playing and eventually coaching, themselves. Less recognized, but no less the case, is the hereditary nature of athletic administration, from ADs to conference bosses, as exemplified by the successors of [former Big Ten Commissioner Jim] Delany and his fellow former Power 5 commissioners – Mike Slive (SEC), Bob Bowlsby (Big 12) and John Swofford (ACC).” Libit reports that Delany’s son, Newman, recently sent an email to Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock soliciting interest on behalf of Collegiate Athletic Solutions. The email read, in part: “I know you have worked with my father, Jim Delany, but [I] wanted to introduce myself.” Delany, Libit adds, is “the new venture’s senior vice president and only publicly known employee.” Libit goes on to highlight some instances where familial relationships raised conflict-of-interest concerns, and FloSports Senior Director of Global Rights Acquisition Matt Bowlsby, son of former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, says when negotiating deals with the Big 12, the elder Bowlsby would exclusive himself to “ensure there was no conflict of interest.” Matt Bowlsby, who Libit notes attended graduate school at Stanford while his father was the Cardinal AD, says Bob has served as a sounding board, “but that is the extent of his involvement. I think everyone wants to make it on their own merits.” Lots more. (link)

EA Sports SVP/Group GM for Tiburon Studios and American Football Daryl Holt talks with SBJ’s Jason Wilson about the changes the company has taken into account since producing its last college football video game: “When you move from where we were in 2013, when we last released that game, to where we are today, not only has the technology changed, not only has the player base changed, not only has the industry changed in terms of life service, capability, connectivity, year-round updates and aspects of the experience that continues to shift and change all of those things – these influence the game that we made today.” Holt adds: “There's an element of Dynasty [mode]. That was the forefront, the focal point of this game. As we were bringing it back, we've seen how the community engaged within NCAA 14 for multiple years after we stopped making the game. And Dynasty was the lifeblood of that. How do you continue to build a program? How do you recruit? How do you drive this passion that you have for a school, for taking a school that's smaller and bringing it all the way up to the national championship level? That is just something that is inherent in college football, and in our game that is very different [than Madden]. This is a key aspect of the college football game.” As far as how NIL will factor in, Holt explains EA settled on a model that will take into account what players want in terms of brand recognition, program ranking and national TV exposure when it comes to recruiting in Dynasty. “[NIL is] not solidified, and it's constantly changing. So all those things kind of play a role in how we've dealt with it. And now we're looking to deal with it as we go forward.” More. (link)
