Asked whether the Big 12 feels comfortable at 16 members, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark cited advice NBA Commissioner Adam Silver gave him years ago: “Be ready for success, make the right investments [and] surround yourself with the right people, so that when success comes, you can strike and take full advantage of it. I look at realignment the same way." Yormark also tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “I don't have a crystal ball. I don't know what's going to happen, but I have to go through scenario management, and I have to determine that if something were to happen, where would I go? What would I do? Define what that is, stick it in the desk and, at the right time, I'll look at it – and maybe I'll never look at it, but I’ve got to be prepared.” (link)
|
Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes submits that the “biggest problem future conference realignment schemes have is funding new configurations. The Pay TV & streaming systems still haven’t digested the last round and expectations that digital distributors will pay a premium multiple over today’s payouts in the future should touch base with the Pac-12. Private investment is an option, but at what rate of return and at what exit terms and what is the source of funds that drive those expected excess returns above current payouts?” (link)

Washington State yesterday officially introduced Anne McCoy as the permanent AD, and in her remarks McCoy said her primary concern is “continuing to work on the conference affiliation piece. That's undeniably the top priority, but we do have some time and so I think we have some time to be patient and really assess what those options are. But more than anything, I think just continuing to connect with our staff, our coaches, and our student-athletes as they get back into town and just really assure them and reassure them that Cougar Athletics is not only here to stay, but better than ever." McCoy also likened conference affiliation to building a house. “Right now, there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes, maybe underground, that not everybody can see. But sooner rather than later, you'll be both amazed, and proud, and excited for the structure you see before you that will be Cougar Athletics of the future. I just implore you to please continue to be patient, to have faith, and to know that while there may not be a lot of things that we're talking about really publicly right now, there are a lot of amazing things going on behind the scenes, not only with Washington State University, with Oregon State University, and certainly our phenomenal new commissioner of the Pac-12 commissioner, Teresa Gould." Former Houston AD Chris Pezman’s effective termination date will be August 1, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte. Pezman will continue to be paid, subject to mitigation, until January 31, 2026. (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski does not view cutting sports as a viable solution post-House and tells the Indianapolis Star’s Nathan Baird: “Because we’re so lean, there’s just not a lot of opportunity – I can’t solve the problem through that. So it really doesn’t make sense to have that be part of your initial plan to how you’re going to deal with this. That doesn’t mean that, as time goes by, things just become so challenging that you have no choice but to somehow, some way adjust how you compete in certain sports or not compete in certain sports. That would be on the table, certainly. But it wouldn’t be my suggestion for a first option.” Baird notes that only Northwestern offers fewer sports than Purdue among Big Ten peers. Meanwhile, a portion of the cost of paying student-athletes may inevitably trickle down to fans, and Bobinski explains: "There’s not a lot of unsold seats where you’ll fill those up and that will do it. So it’s pricing adjustments as time goes by to try to generate some more revenue. It’s being aggressive with our Learfield partnership through Purdue Sports Properties and maybe driving some additional revenue there. It’s philanthropy – being more connected with our alumni base. … I feel confident that we’ll get there. It’s just a matter of how we ultimately organize it and structure it.” Bobinski also notes the football season ticket allotment is 97% of capacity as of last week. (link)

In an interview with Dawgman.com, Washington AD Pat Chun talks about the future of the Apple Cup and potentially losing a seventh home football game because of it. On whether it will continue moving forward: “We'll find out. The impact for us is going to be a little bit different. I think ticket sales need to improve on that from some of the reports I've gotten, but I would assume they'll pick up. The hard part about college sports, you can't apply a lot of logic to college sports. Rivalries, we're a part of multiple rivalries that matter. If you don't believe me, look at the TV ratings. There are a lot of made-for-TV rivalries that don't rate on TV. There's a game with Washington State that's been played for decades upon decades that's important for a lot of people in this state to continue to play, and there's a lot of emotion on both sides relative to the reasons why we should or shouldn't play." Chun also talks about future facilities upgrades and says: “I need to start doing some evaluation because our budget model changes because of the potential for revenue sharing. There will be a pause and then we're going to have to dial in to what we're going to look like going forward. … There's some things that need to be brought up to a Big Ten standard, like with press boxes for women's soccer and softball – so there are some things that we'll have to do right away.” Chun on servicing the stadium debt and receiving support from campus: “There are things within our budget that I need to get a better understanding of, which now I have the time to do and now I'll just do a fuller, deeper dive into it as we get fully staffed. We'll start working with campus on that. The nice thing is, everyone's been collaborative, campus has been really collaborative about working with the budget." Lots more. (link)

Colorado State AD John Weber Q&As with The Denver Gazette’s Tyler King and says of CSU’s outlook on the industry overall that “it’s gonna be a challenge for everybody when you look at how sports are evolving at the collegiate level. We’re in a position with how fortunate we are at Colorado State at the Group of 5 level that we’ve got the really good foundation here and we’re ready to really start to build on top of that and see the progress that all of us expect to see. When we look down the road about how things are evolving over the next year or two and how we start to work with our student athletes and change that relationship a little bit (with potential legal settlements on paying athletes), making sure we are ready for that and leaders in the NCAA in terms of how we come out of the gate with that, that’s a really hard challenge but that is what’s taking most of our times.” Weber also talks about football non-conference scheduling now that the College Football Playoff has expanded and says: “When you look at that opportunity to go and have that slot in the CFP, we want to make sure we’re scheduling in a way that we’ve actually got an opportunity to go and earn that spot. What that means is we’re going to have to go 12-0, 11-1 in the season to get to something like that. When you count the championship game for the conference on top of that, it’s something that’s really changed the dynamics for honestly every school in the way they schedule.” More from Weber. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder/CEO Brandon Copeland sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NIL Summit to discuss the development of a players association for college athletes and the specific ways in which AO seeks to amplify the student-athlete voice in today’s athletic landscape. Copeland shares insight into the structure of the association, including the ways in which negotiations between student-athletes and their institution or organizations such as a conference office, NCAA or College Football Playoff could be facilitated. Copeland and Brown also discuss Copeland’s financial education program and the importance of empowering college and high school students with tools to create the life of their dreams. Copeland on the educational program: “We always start our class by saying, ‘You don’t know what you don’t know. If I say 2 + 2 = 4 that sounds like ‘duh,’ but if you never learned that 2 + 2 = 4 that's a hard question. So for us it's breaking it down to the basics and literally taking it week by week and going through different, constant money decisions you have to make in your life. … I’ve sat in a lot of courses where professors and teachers and educators come in and they want to show you how smart they are, so they want to use big words and tell you these terms and I got to leave the course, and I got to go learn it on YouTube when I'm paying you money to teach me the damn course. So, for me, I'm just having a conversation and I make these things really, really interactive and engaging because it's about whoever's in the room, it's not about me stroking my ego.” Lots more from Copeland. The Atlantic Sun and Southern Conference have agreed to a scheduling alliance for men’s basketball, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who notes the two-year agreement includes 20 games per season, taking place in November and December. “All 10 SoCon teams get one road and one home game while 8 ASUN teams get one home and one road game, two schools will get one road game and two will get one home game.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers shares some data from the MLB Draft. The SEC had the most players selected with 87, followed by the ACC (60), Big 12 (52), Pac-12 (36) and Big Ten (23). Broken down by school, Mississippi State sent the most student-athletes to The Show with 11 draftees, followed by LSU (9), Arkansas, Florida State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tennessee (8) and Kentucky, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt (7). Also from Rogers: 452 of the 615 (73%) picks were DI players, up from 427 in 2023. In both 2023 and 2024, 170 different DI teams had at least one player drafted. (link)
|
Meanwhile, superagent Scott Boras is calling on MLB to move its draft back to early June, arguing that holding the draft in advance of the All-Star Game is detrimental to the sport and the players. “It's got to be something that's devoted two or three days of baseball isolation, and it makes it fuzzy with the All-Star Game. It's very important to the game and very important to the players, and it's just too much for the industry.” Boras also contends the later draft time costs young players half of a summer when they can’t play games and aren’t able to begin training in a professional environment. “I want these kids developed, conditioned, and if I can get them drafted in June and I have them developed for an extra month and a half, that accentuates their protection and safety for their play going into next season. So that's a big issue with me. We have all these facilities, we have all these great coaches, we have all this commitment of dollars by owners, and we can't use it for two months.” (link)

Florida State is unlikely to find a landing spot in the Big Ten or SEC if it’s successful in leaving the ACC and the ACC stays intact, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who says leagues have multiple concerns with adding the Seminoles. Those reasons, per sources, “include the fact that it doesn’t make financial sense for either league, ‘there’s no appetite for more expansion’ and FSU has shown ‘it’s not a good partner.’” McMurphy adds: “Three SEC presidents recently told Action Network they had ‘no interest’ in adding Florida State. It takes 12 of the 16 SEC presidents to favor adding another school. The Big Ten also is not interested in the Seminoles, sources said.” Another source says: “[Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Petitti] is staying away from expansion, and we’re taking Tony’s lead.” Added another: “Why would anyone want to expedite more chaos by adding Florida State?” McMurphy also quotes a source as saying: “If the ACC blows up, who picks first [between the Big Ten and SEC]? Who picks second? If there is a need and desire to expand, you take inventory so your competitors don’t get it. But the presidents and chancellors are looking for stability. Despite what the social media geniuses are suggesting, no one – the leagues, the networks – is driving expansion.” (link); Ovies + Giglio’s Joe Ovies: “FSU is more likely to secure private equity money and go independent with a Big 12 scheduling arrangement until the entire world of college football changes in 2030.” (link)

Title IX rules will apply if/when colleges begin sharing revenue with student-athletes, according to U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights Asst. Secretary Catherine Lhamon, who tells ESPN: "Schools must provide equal athletic opportunities based on sex, including with respect to benefits, opportunities, publicity, and recruitment, and must not discriminate in the provision of financial aid. In the new NIL environment, these same principles apply." According to ESPN’s Paula Lavigne and Dan Murphy, the department “did not answer a question about whether the revenue share dollars would be deemed financial aid, which would be required to be distributed to men and women athletes proportionally based on roster spots. To date, every dollar a school provides directly to its athletes has been intended to cover educational expenses and thus has been considered financial aid.” Lhamon also addresses using third parties to funnel university money to student-athletes for endorsement activities. "As has been true all these decades, Title IX requires schools to ensure that when accepting and using private donations, the schools do not create disparities in benefits, opportunities, and treatment on the basis of sex that result in the denial of athletic opportunities. Likewise, Title IX prohibits schools from providing significant assistance to any outside organization that discriminates on the basis of sex. These core Title IX principles operate unchanged today." Athletes.org has hired Ice Miller Strategies to lobby on issues related to NIL rights for student-athletes and other issues in college athletics, according to The Hill’s Taylor Giorno, who notes that Jarrod Loadholt, former senior counsel for the House Financial Services Committee, will work on the account and says: “We are incredibly excited to partner with Athletes.Org as we work together to help shape the future of college sports. The House settlement will transform college sports, and federal policymakers will weigh in heavily on everything from the NCAA’s antitrust exemption, to Name, Image, and Likeness, to labor and employment issues. The voices of college athletes have to be at the table as Washington debates the path forward post-House, and our partnership with AO will help to ensure that the voices of athletes are heard.” (link)

Utah State Football HC Blake Anderson has responded to the school’s notice of intent to part ways. Anderson’s attorney, Tom Mars: “On behalf of Coach Anderson, we submitted a 70-page response to USU’s Athletics Director earlier today. Currently, I am focused on filing a grievance pursuant to USU policy within 30 days of termination as I vigorously defend my reputation as a loyal Aggies alum and stellar Associate Vice President & Deputy Athletics Director. Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart addressed the number of speeding, reckless driving and other vehicle-related issues over the past 18 months, explaining at SEC Media Days that the problem has persisted despite proactive and punitive measures, including announcing the dismissal of student-athlete David Daniel-Sisavanh. Smart also revealed that UGA players have had 162 instances in which they’ve heard from coaches, administrators and speakers in team environments about the dangers of speeding, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He also noted that players have incurred “substantial fines” from the Classic City Collective: “That’s not something that’s new. That’s something that’s been ongoing outside of my jurisdiction that they decided to implement and have done for a considerable amount.” (link, link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter on collectives issuing fines to student-athletes: “While they’re free to do so, there are potential legal issues (for collectives and schools) that could come along with that.” (link)

Wisconsin unveils revealed details and renderings for premium seating options at the Kohl Center with the 2024-25 season. Amenities included with the premium seating options include access to a new premium club space on the event level, the Krantz Club (beginning in Jan. 2025), all-inclusive premium food and non-alcoholic beverage, a full-service cash bar, wider, padded, premium seating, and enhanced parking priority. UW is also reducing the size of the ice sheet, as the Kohl Center was one of only five DI ice hockey arenas with a rink size larger than 200-by-92 feet. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork explains the Buckeyes’ process for updating the football facilities inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and notes: “We are out of space. We need more efficient space. We need more room in a lot of areas. It’s really not that we’re adding a lot of bells and whistles, we’re adding functional, teaching spaces that make the players better, that make the timing better. So, we want to be aggressive in the summer and fall. Maybe we’ll announce something publicly in early 2025, but the plan is to really get a lot of information, talk to a lot of donors about some lead gifts and so we’ll do all that prep work this summer and fall.” (link)
