According to estimates from many of the conference’s football coaches, SEC schools are expected to spend as much as $15M of the revenue-sharing cap on football. Florida HC Billy Napier tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Do the math. We’re talking $20M (in allotted revenue sharing). In most athletic departments, football is 70-75% of the revenue. That’s $12.5-15M. That’s the number we anticipate.” Several coaches also expect to continue utilizing their collectives as a “sweetener,” another coach tells Dellenger, who adds: “There’s more, too: Coaches believe the new football roster limit will settle at around 105 players — a figure that will permit schools to offer 20 more scholarships for the sport than the current NCAA maximum of 85.” Georgia HC Kirby Smart: “I don’t know that collectives go away. They are not under any umbrella that we are under. Nobody is going to be able to say, ‘You can’t have those.’ The point of rev-share was to take that part out of it, but I don’t see it going away.” As for how Title IX will be applied to revenue-sharing, Commissioner Greg Sankey says: “We want to learn from the approach taken at the court level or the reaction to that.” LSU HC Brian Kelly adds: “It depends on how the court pays back the $2.8B. If it’s paid back percentage wise 85 (men) and 15 (women), then the ADs have cover moving forward (on an unequal split) with rev share.” More from Dellenger. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel also reports the “number for college football roster limits that’s being socialized this week from the commissioners to the campus level is 105. That has yet to be accepted, but it’s the number that commissioners have brought back to athletic directors for discussion. The Big Ten has been in favor of bigger roster numbers. There’s more formal discussion expected before anything is finalized.” (link, link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, during this week’s Media Days, indicated the baseball roster limit will settle in the “mid-30s,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes this would “permit schools – not require them – to offer 20+ additional scholarships for the sport as they do now (11.7).” D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers: “This is honestly a little better than I was expecting. There was a lot of concern from the coaching ranks that the # would settle at 29-30 for the overall roster. Mid-30s is much more doable.” (link)

The Atlantic 10 has named Sunshine State Conference (DII) Commissioner Ed Pasque as Deputy Commissioner. Pasque will serve as in-house legal counsel, while also developing and coordinating conference strategic initiatives with the Commissioner and senior staff. Research and planning in the new model of intercollegiate athletics will also be under Pasque’s purview. Additionally, Pasque will “oversee all aspects of A-10 men’s basketball, including regular season scheduling and operations, championship enhancement, officiating, strategic planning, brand enhancement, marketing and championship ticket sales strategies. He will also serve as the liaison with the league’s television partners, CBS Sports, ESPN and NBC Sports, as the league begins new five-year partnerships with all three companies. A-10 brand enhancement, distribution, quality control, and annual game selections will be managed by Pasque.” (link)

Intellectual property attorney David McKenzie compares what Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody demanded from the ACC with what she actually got: “Contracts with Disney? Nope. Market analyses? Nope. Communications w ESPN? Nope. Budgets? Nope. ‘Other contracts’ with Disney or ESPN? Nope. ACC-ESPN deal? Not really, as it will be heavily redacted and probably tell her nothing. Again, charade. ACC stood its ground. Moody capitulated.” (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski is prepared for “minimal” expansion to March Madness, but “this 96, 120 – under no circumstances. To me, that’s ridiculous. You can’t turn that event into a watered-down, all-comers tournament. There’s a magic to why it’s so heavily viewed and heavily anticipated and people take off work those first couple of days. There’s something to that that’s really powerful. I think you run the risk of fixing a problem that doesn’t exist at this point. … “Having been in that room six times with the committee – I recall every one of those six years – when you are picking the last at-large teams, you are looking at teams whose accomplishments during the year are suspect. Their resumes have lots of holes and lots of question marks already. That last group, five or six of them, you’re looking at them like, ‘Eh, did they really do enough to warrant a spot in this tournament? If you expand that by more, you’re looking at more teams that are going to look like that. And there will still be a next team that says, ‘What about us?’” (link)

Former Miami (FL) men’s basketball student-athlete Nijel Pack made headlines when signing a two-year NIL deal that would pay him $800K. Now, a high-major assistant coach tells The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker, CJ Moore and Brendan Marks the deal would be worth double that. A high-major HC adds: “That deal would probably be a median income of a fourth or fifth option on a Power 5.” Tucker, et al. go on to note the average NIL budget for high-major programs to be $3.5M. That figure drops to $750K for “mid-major plus” programs, $291K for mid-majors and $80K for low-majors. As for where the money is coming from and whether it can last, one collective rep says: “Our focus is on the high-end donors, and there are probably 15-20. Every collective I’ve talked to that is sort of crowd-sourcing it says, ‘I wish we’d never done this.’ Because you don’t get very much money and all people do is complain. I heard a coach say, ‘Some guy who gives me $10 is going to think he runs the program.’” The same rep says of the future of collectives: “The biggest area collectives can thrive is working as an agent for the players. It will be less about who is the richest donor and more back to the traditional structure of what NIL meant. If a kid is in the transfer portal, and he says, ‘OK, well, because all the schools have the same number in revenue sharing — and then one is offering me $100,000 and one is offering me $200,000 from the collective — what does that really mean? Can I play better here? Can I improve my stock?’ And then the conversation includes, ‘Man, if I go to a blue blood, maybe I can get a deal with Nike or Powerade.’ Because right now, no one is really focusing on those.” More. Sportico’s Daniel Libit profiles Houston Christian’s “anomalous” outside counsel in its legal attempt to halt the House settlement, noting that James Sears Bryant, “whose resumé includes professional sports agent, Democratic state representative (from a Republican district in Oklahoma), minor league basketball team owner, consumer advocate and Hollywood producer…describes himself as ‘probably a heretic,’ and when it comes to college sports, he’s probably a paradox: a longtime player advocate and NCAA adversary who is also a full-throated defender of amateurism.” Bryant tells Libit: “It’s really [each] school’s name and likeness that makes college sports so identifiable. It was really fun on Saturday afternoon to see students that are affiliated with the program and try to win one for the alma mater. All that is gone.” Bryant goes on to register his disagreement with the House settlement: “One of the key problems of the legal system is people consistently settling to avoid liability and controversy instead of taking corrective positions in fighting. These [damages] did not happen. Nobody took $2.8B [from athletes] … I am a huge college football fan, but tell me: Who has had $280M a year taken from them? … Higher education leaders are extremely progressive in the classroom but completely reactionary about their own institutions. They are afraid of change.” More from Libit, including Bryant’s initial association with HCU and how Bryant and his wife would eventually endow HCU’s men’s hoops HC position. (link)

New College Football Playoff Executive Director Rick Clark says the CFP won't make any decisions about what the sport's postseason format will look like in 2026 and beyond until after seeing how this year’s 12-team iteration unfolds. Clark tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich: "In the January [meeting], we're going to start talking about things in earnest. Then hopefully we get things on the table, we've had a chance to look at them, and in the April one we have to start making decisions, if there's anything to decide." Clark adds: "In the military, you plan, you execute, you step back after execution, you debrief, and then you go again. That's how you get better. But each time you go, you have to go full-in. You can't go into it thinking, 'Oh, this is just a test run.' No, it's not a test run. This is the run. This is decades we're going to be doing this. We have to have the long game in mind on this and really be ready to adjust and make ourselves better over the years." (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork believes college sports is in a “calming period right now and really it’s related to the television contracts. Look, what’s happening in the ACC, we have to pay attention to that. We don't know where that's going to go, but for now – and I say for now I’m talking the next three to five years – after that there's going to be more movement. TV contracts expire in late 2020s and early 2030s. You’re going to have more movement, and I think there's going to be an economic consolidation around the whole ecosystem. What that means specifically I don't know yet. We will still have the Big Ten, we will still have the SEC, we will still have our conferences, but as things evolve, the bigger brands are going to have an economic consolidation at some point in time. Whether or not we join conferences with others, I don't think that's the case, but that's where it's going to go and so let's pay attention over the next three to five years as TV contracts wind down.” Full interview. The ACC yesterday released a statement following the announcement that it would turn over redacted versions of its media contracts with ESPN to Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office: “The ACC respects the public records laws of states where we have members; however, as a private nonprofit association formed and operated by public and private universities from across the country, we do not believe that our own records are subject to those laws. Both parties, while fully preserving their legal positions, have reached a solution which will include the voluntary production of certain redacted documents by the ACC, and the Attorney General then dismissing its lawsuit. The ACC will not be providing any portions of documents containing trade secrets which has been its consistent position.” (link)

So there’s a ton of opportunity.” WMT Chief Innovation Officer Chris Freet, who formerly served on senior leadership teams at Kansas, Arkansas & Miami (FL), notes Tillion’s “immediacy” of ticket sales data for decision-makers within athletic departments & helping “partners turn their data into action.” Tillion already counts the likes of the Fiesta Bowl & New York Mets as clients. Inside Higher Ed’s 2024 Survey of College and University Chief Business Officers found that 83% of respondents believe their institution will be financially stable over the next three years, while 85% believe the same is true of the next five years. That number falls to 73%, however, when the timeline is 10 years. CBOs were less confident about their long-term prospects last year, with 72% indicating they would be financially stable over the next five years and 65% over the next 10 years. Despite their increased confidence, fewer business officers noted positive operating margins. Slightly more than half (57%) noted a positive operating margin for FY23, down from 76% in the previous year’s survey. For FY24, 62% of respondents said they expected a positive operating margin. However, that varies by sector, with 73% of CBOs at public institutions expecting FY24 to yield a positive operating margin, compared to 49% of those at private, nonprofit colleges. Also, 94% of respondents said that their institution offers good value. But only 68% of CBOs believe that is true of higher education as a whole. And 69% believe that the public overestimates the cost of a college degree. More from the survey. (link)
