Bowling Green AD Derek van der Merwe joins D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle to discuss his past 18 months with the Falcons as well as his approach to determining fit when hiring coaches and staff members. Van der Merwe also outlines his perspective on the potential House settlement and the Group of 5’s response and course of action. When determining fit, van der Merwe says it’s important to have a “very firm understanding of the values” that drive the university. “One thing I've said over and over again is I don’t want the best coach, I want the best coach for the university. When you have to get up and meet with faculty and you have to meet with the community and you have to meet with the president and the board of trustees, and you have all these variables that really define who we are and what we value. If you bring somebody in that isn't connected to that spirit of the community, there's always going to be tension there's always going to be friction there's always going to be this internal battle. … So I need someone that really and truly understands who we are.” Full Q&A on Connect. Former Utah State Deputy AD Jerry Bovee speaks out: “This has been the toughest thing I’ve ever dealt with. I’ve had a lot of people reach out and say, ‘I know you; you’re going to be fine. …We know your integrity. …But it doesn’t really make you feel better because they can’t do anything for me. I mean, maybe I can find a job from someone that will say, ‘Despite all of this, I know you’re a good guy, and I’ll hire you.’ But this has done irreparable damage to me working in this industry. … I didn’t do what I was accused of doing. I’m not perfect, but on these points, I didn’t do it. And I would never do anything to hurt the institution.” Also of note from KSL Sports’ Amy Donaldson, “In the Findings and Conclusions section of the Husch Blackwell report summary given to Bovee and shared with KSL, investigators said, ‘Based on review of all information from witnesses interviewed and documents reviewed, our investigation found that Mr. Bovee failed to adhere in multiple ways to the terms and spirit of reporting obligations attendant to student-athlete arrest for charges involving sexual misconduct or domestic violence.’ But then the report also said, ‘Given the totality of the information gathered during the investigation, we find there is insufficient evidence to conclude that Mr. Bovee failed to fulfill his 24-hour reporting obligation pursuant to USU Policy 340.’” Lots more. With the hype surrounding the release of EA Sports College Football 25, Kansas AD Travis Goff got into a back-and-forth with the Missouri Football X account on social media. It started when someone posted a photo of his individual score in a Kansas vs. Missouri version of the video game, in which the Tigers beat the Jayhawks 184-0. The Missouri account responded “We’re in the game … (Maybe they shouldn’t be),” to which Goff replied “Bold coming from the official University account. You can all play video games all you want… Kansas will focus on the real life stuff.” (link)

Labor lawyer Josh Nadreau joins the Sports Wise podcast with Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman to discuss what the recent Johnson decision means and notes that in terms of a possible win for the NCAA, “they have a test that I think is flexible enough to account for some finding of employment status in maybe the major Division I programs, revenue-generating sports using it as a shorthand – I don't agree that revenue generation should matter – but versus non-revenue generating Olympic sports, which I think has been a concern for the NCAA is what are we going to do if we have to pay all of these players? And maybe through this test they can establish for some of these sports it is more akin to play than work. And maybe the school doesn't necessarily generate a benefit from a swimming or a tennis or a baseball team…and I think the more that can be shifted into that side, obviously the less expensive this becomes and the less disruptive from an Institutional standpoint this is. But that's a silver lining that I see is that they have gotten their own test, which I think is a big win in the sense that we're going to look at this differently because if you look at all the other tests and you try to squeeze into them it gets pretty easy to say, ‘Yep, an employee.’” Full podcast. Meta Strategic Partner Manager for Athletes Rebecca Wathen joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss Meta’s new partnership with the NCAA. The partnership features the expansion of Meta’s NIL Empower Program, which seeks to provide female student-athletes with additional NIL opportunities via Meta’s three platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Wathen notes that “this team didn’t exist three years ago but when NIL passed, we realized internally, this is a big opportunity. … This opens up a brand new crop of nearly 400K athletes a year that need guidance on how to take advantage of this.” Wathen goes on to share insight into the process for selecting student-athlete participants for the program and how Meta can help those athletes learn about their identity outside the sport they play. On the selection process: “We looked at a number of different factors. The first was their social media profile. We wanted a mix of diverse group of more experienced content creators, but also athletes who were just getting started and wanted to learn. So, first thing we're taking a look at your profile, we're seeing if you're consistent, if you’ve posted some Reels, if you have some base-level knowledge of content creation. We're looking at diversity of race, of sport, of school because we try to get an even mix of all representation of sports and schools [from] Division I to Division III. We also have a short-answer section because we want athletes that are leaned in and motivated and that we know are going to take it seriously.” More on ADU. (link)

College golfers are getting an earlier glimpse of what it’s like to be a professional since the advent of NIL, Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey observes, adding: “Instead of recruiting top amateurs after they’ve proved themselves playing for a major university, brands now have the option of betting on young talent before they become household names. There are pros and cons to that strategy, though.” President of Adidas Golf Jeff Lienhart explains: “It’s hard enough, when they’re professionals, to really measure the ROI on some of these agreements. We believe in the system and we believe in having these partnerships with professional athletes. NIL is even that much more difficult to measure an ROI.” On the other hand, Lienhart notes: “It gives you a seat at the table, so that when they turn professional, you’re in a good position to negotiate what the future might hold.” (link)

Marketing Brew’s Alyssa Meyers examines what some teams do to maintain engagement on social media during the offseason, and in addition to highlighting new and incoming players and training camp, some social marketers create content that isn’t even necessarily about their own sports. “Man City, for example, posted a photo of manager Pep Guardiola alongside Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla when the Celtics won the NBA Finals in June, and one of the [Hartford] Yard Goats’ most viral posts was of Tom Brady photoshopped into one of their jerseys when he announced his retirement.” Yard Goats Client Services, Social Media, and Promotions Manager Izzy Meckfessel: “I want to make sure that the content we’re putting out there is engaging. I try to make it not just seem like I’m just pushing out content to push out content, so really trying to tie it into what’s going on in pop culture.” Team handshakes seem to perform well among basketball fans, as the Chicago Bulls have a handshake series on TikTok that has more than 101 million views and 16 million likes across about 13 videos, according to the team. Bulls VP of Content Luka Dukich says it’s “one of our most consistent hits.” Manchester City Head of Production Michael Russell adds that player-centric content works year-round: “The best stuff here is just the mundane, the stuff with players just being themselves, literally walking in in the morning. We are trying to get a worldwide fan base to realize that these are human beings.” (link)

Missouri State President Biff Williams updates the Springfield News-Leader on the Bears’ AD search, which was narrowed to eight candidates who were a part of virtual interviews this past week. Next step: Three to five will be brought to campus, which will include public forums. Williams on an updated hiring timeline: “It will depend on who we're bringing in and where they're coming from. I'm thinking that will be anywhere from the middle to the end of August and then at the end of August for reviews. Hopefully, we'll have somebody identified by September. That could fluctuate where it's sooner and it could fluctuate a little if it's later. But the goal is to get it done quickly.” Williams also notes a key area of focus for the new leader: “It's really about getting that community support. We need people to come and support our student-athletes. We need to make sure that the fan experience is where it needs to be so we can have those fans wanting to return.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey with CBS’ Brandon Marcello on the potential for corporate brands too highly visible on football fields: “We've seen the move to the football field sponsor, so I think you'll see playing surface opportunities. I think that has to be well managed globally. You can't find the team name with the sponsor logos. It strikes me that the conference name approach is a little bit about the jersey patch before the jersey patches change. I view that these decisions ought to be connected. My Big 12 colleague (Brett Yormark) talked about referee patches. I don't think those are done independent of jerseys. I don't think fields should just be ad hoc. We ought to have a more connected conversation. But those rules are driven at an NCAA national level and we have an outcome on one (field advertisements). I would encourage people — and I have — to say we should be philosophically connected on the decision-making for all.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey joined The Big Mountain podcast and talks about what the College Football Playoff expansion means for the Broncos: “I think it’s powerful when you think about a school like ours that we don’t have what everyone else has. We have that blue-collar work ethic, and we do everything we possibly can to stretch our resources and invest appropriately. … And you know, it's not just winning games, it's selling season tickets – we're about to go over 19,000 season tickets – and those are things that matter to a program like ours. And now that I have the ability and the opportunity to sell hope to our fan base that…now all of a sudden you have a great year and you have a seat at that table, where you can compete on a national level. And once you get to a postseason, just like in March Madness, anything can happen.” Moving forward post-House, Dickey notes there “is no money tree” and says the Broncos have “never had what everyone else had. … So not much has changed for me and that's my message to our team: let's control what we can control. And yeah, there's going to be opportunities and we do want to create the best possible student-athlete experience and that's going to include some type of revenue share at some point, and obviously the collective is important and name, image and likeness, but I don't know if we’re at a place right now that I can say yeah we're going to do $22M that's been thrown out there. I think not just for us, I think for many schools that's going to be unrealistic.” More from Dickey. (link)

Deloitte U.S. College Athletics Leader Caitlin Jacklin sits down with D1.ticker Founder/CEO Matt Roberts to share more about the firm’s ability to leverage experience in pro sports, entertainment, hospitality and higher education to provide solutions for athletic departments. Jacklin and Roberts also talk about the gap between revenue and expenses across the industry, the pace of change in the industry and the eventualities every administrator needs to consider. Jacklin observes that college athletics as a whole is a “sports organization, it's an entertainment organization, it's a hospitality organization, all within the higher education umbrella. So, that's incredibly complex and what we do at Deloitte is we bring together the depth and breadth of all the services that we offer our clients across industries – retail, banking, hospitality, travel and things that we have seen be successful in – and navigating the challenges of what we've seen over the past five years. Jacklin points out that when COVID hit, “we were our clients’ first call to help them figure that out when nobody knew what to do at that time, including Deloitte, we were figuring it out ourselves. So, I really see our superpower as connecting all of the dots across specialties and disciplines, whether that's strategy, technology, digital, human capital, finance due diligence for M&A, you name it, and then taking everything we’ve learned from those disciplines across industries to pull it together to help college athletics.” Lots more in the full Q&A. Most notably given Gottlieb’s continued Fox Sports national media appearances, per Sportico the deal details “Gottlieb is required to get approval from the AD of ‘planned absences’ at least seven days in advance and prioritize his UWGB job such that it ‘may result in him having to take days off from his LLC outside work.’ The school’s athletic director will review the management plan on an annual basis, and Gottlieb’s assistant coaches and players will be ‘notified to contact the (AD) if they perceive any additional conflict or are unable to obtain reasonable contact’ with the coach.” (link)

Clemson Football AHC/Defensive Run Game Coordinator Nick Eason provides perspective on the roles of facilities & NIL money in the current recruiting landscape: “We have one of the top facilities in the world, but with the landscape of NIL and things, those things have kind of changed the importance of how important it really is in recruiting. [...] There are a lot of great facilities in the country but are those facilities really determining people’s decisions? Probably not. There are very few percentage of high school athletes that are making a decision based on that and that is where we are right now. In Terms of high school athletes, do they love it? Yeah, they love it, but at the end of the day is that going to determine the decision? Yes and No. That is kind of my opinion.” (link)

In the latest edition of The Career Hustle, Furman Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Development and Alumni Relations Erin Wissing sits down with Collegiate Sports Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on her journey as a fundraiser, which includes stops at her alma mater, Wake Forest, as well as Kennesaw State. Wissing talks about the habits that have helped her maintain success and her morning routine; discusses the unique challenges of being a woman in a field often dominated by men; and offers her advice for networking and establishing authentic connections with donors. Wissing: "It starts by making sure you're at a place that you can believe in. … I’ve been at some places where maybe I didn’t feel the passion, so understanding first before you get into anything, what is it that really motivates you. And for me, I’ve found a lot of passion in private liberal arts, high-academic [institutions]. I love a really prestigious degree paired with high-level Division I athletics. To me that’s something I can really get behind.” More on Connect. (link)

CCHA Law senior advisor Matt Banker outlines several strategic questions for schools to ask when considering game contracts as the industry continues to change, noting: “After living off boiler-plate game-contract provisions for decades, things aren’t so simple anymore. … Adding to the industry transformations are the increasing appetites of enterprising third-party event operators and hosts running neutral site games and MTEs -- some of them new to college sports and event operations altogether. Plainly stated, today’s game contract and MTE agreement can be the playground for a rights land-grab by third-party event operators and hosts. Universities and athletic departments need to be careful how the modern game-contract landscape can increase two things – costs and risks.” As such, Banker advises keeping the following questions top of mind: How does your University avoid dispensing rights in game contracts that it may not have authority to dispense? Is your University giving up too much – legally and financially – to the event operators? Has your University scrubbed the game contract or MTE agreement for hidden costs the University will absorb? Is your University appropriately navigating NIL-related distributions, NIL Collective-donations or similar NIL funding offers from third-party event operators or MTE hosts? Might your Athletics Department internal budget and organization reviews (think org charts, travel party and roster sizes, etc) impact what you’re agreeing to in a game contract or MTE agreement? More from Banker. (link)

FIFA officially appointed On Location as its hospitality provider for the 2026 World Cup, confirming SBJ’s reporting from April. SBJ’s Alex Silverman: “The Endeavor subsidiary will now work with MLS to promote and sell premium tickets, suites and hospitality packages for the 48-team, 104-match tournament in North America. Sales are expected to begin later this year. … About 7M tickets are expected to be made available for the 2026 World Cup. On Location and MLS will be responsible for selling the roughly 1M premium tickets as part of a wide range of fan experience packages.” Also from Silverman: “While specific terms [of] FIFA’s contract with On Location are unknown, SBJ can confirm that On Location did not provide FIFA with a minimum revenue guarantee as part of their deal. That represents a major point of differentiation from its 2021 deal with the IOC, under which On Location guaranteed a combined $1.3B in revenue for the 2024 Paris, 2026 Milan-Cortina and 2028 L.A. Games.” (link)
