Charlotte Chatter…
+ ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips hit the stage to tee up the league’s Football Kickoff event. Of note on the Florida State & Clemson lawsuits: “Forceful moments deserve forceful support and leadership. I don't know that I've changed at all other than I stand by everything I've said from the moment on the first interview I did around the Orange Bowl on ACCN to today. This is a really important time for the conference. Either you believe in what has been signed or you don't. We are going to do everything we can to protect and to fight the league because I see a group of student-athletes there. We now have 12,200 student-athletes. This has been a league that started way before me, 71 years ago, and it will be a league that will be around a long time after I depart. This league deserves us to take this really serious issue and to handle it appropriately. [...] This conference is bigger than any one school, or schools. [...] We've had six months of disruption. I think we've handled it incredibly well. So I think it's important for me to lead our group in particular, not only our staff but more importantly our schools, to compartmentalize the legal piece of what's happening and not let it distract us or take us away from what we're all trying to do. That is to provide great experiences for our student-athletes, teams, coaches, put the focus back on the fields and areas of competition.” On the potential House settlement: “The NCAA, I give our new president Charlie Baker a lot of credit. He's trying to take the most of it on. [...] But you're seeing some clear separation. I think there will be choices to be made. That's what we're working through right now with this proposed settlement. There's so many steps that affect the long-term future, but you don't know what the future is going to be until you start to get into it.” More in the full transcript of Phillips’ Q&A today. (link)
+ Prior to the Q&A portion of Phillips’ stage time, he also delivered prepared remarks, including details on the league’s success initiative that could generate a member $20 to $25 million more via football & men’s hoops performance than a standard slice of revenues, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel. (link)
+ 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello & John Talty write on opportunities for the ACC to potentially bolster its public brand as former Boston College Football HC Tom O’Brien offers an example: “I wouldn't say (SEC Network’s) Paul (Finebaum) is a nice guy, I've been on the wrong end of Paul's commentary before but that's what makes him who he is. He's not afraid to criticize and he's not afraid to praise when it's due. That's what the ACC needs. We don't need a guy or a woman who is going to praise us all the time, we need somebody like Paul who stirs the pot. [...] I don't know if there is another Paul Finebaum out there. Probably not. But we've got to find somebody.” Marcello & Talty: “The desire for the ACC's version of Finebaum to generate fan interest in ACC football was a frequent refrain from coaches and administrators at the conference's recent business meetings in Amelia Island, Florida. In evaluating why Florida State didn't make the four-team playoff, amidst other issues, coaches believed the conference had a perception problem. The ACC was 6-4 against the SEC in the regular season. The conference was better than it was given credit for, they argued, believing poor marketing and branding was hurting its public reputation. [...] Phillips recognizes the need for a face and voice for the network and has explored a needle-moving, ACC-centric personality, informally gauging the interest of multiple media personalities, according to sources. (An ESPN spokesperson said "We're constantly evaluating programming opportunities that align with the network's strategy and vision.")” (link)
+ Meanwhile, a “senior TV source” tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “You have all these private equity companies circling college sports. I think that is going to be a factor in the Big 12, maybe some of the other smaller conferences. I don’t know at the moment how the Big Ten and SEC are going to react to it, but I do see the potential of further destabilization.” (link)

The Big Sky inks a new media rights extension with ESPN that includes “a healthy rights fee increase, but also increases our linear exposures to four Big Sky games per season starting in 2025,” per Commissioner Tom Wistrcill. On industry challenges: “It’s a turbulent time in college athletics — we are not big fans of the House settlement in regard to how the costs are being assessed to conferences like ours. That said: We can still be leaders, we can still compete for national championships. We’re not going to chase the almighty dollar and we can be what college athletics was meant to be. As far as the Johnson case, I don’t believe our student-athletes should be employees, and it’s not what the athletes I talk to want.” Also of note from Wistrcill, $80M was bet on Big Sky football games as it continues its partnership with IC-360 and the league is teaming up with GameStrat for in-game sideline technology. (link)

Southland Commissioner Chris Grant chats with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention about the changes within the SLC and its future. “To get here took some tough conversations and a lot of transparent stuff that I wasn’t responsible for, but I had to take it on. The credit goes to our membership – the ones that stuck in there remained loyal and allowed me to go to work. It started with the rebrand, and my team has done a phenomenal job of bringing our brand to life and making sure we became more organized in the sense that we’re doing things the fundamental way a conference office should. We’re amplifying efforts of our membership.” The meeting at the high school coaches association was intentional by Grant, who says: “It’s important for us to be here in the sense that Texas is home, and we haven't celebrated Texas enough. We celebrate Louisiana a heck of a lot, and we’re not going to stop doing that. […] We’ve been accomplishing so much on campus, but it’s been hidden. It’s been bottled up. Now it’s time to take it to market.” On future growth, Grant states: “We want to expand, and we want to go to divisions. We have 12 valuable members, but if we can make our resources go further by creating more regional matchups and rivalries while selling more tickets at the gate, then we want to do it because that’s the ultimate goal. But it has to be a good fit, and what I care about are the scheduling opportunities to create regional rivalries. If they decide one day the Southland is a destination they want to be in, then we need to have that conversation.” (link)

USC AD Jennifer Cohen says the Trojans will be fully invested in revenue-sharing and are “well positioned to manage the landscape change,” while acknowledging there is still “work to do.” Further: “You have to stay big-picture in your thinking. We can’t hold on to things that don’t exist anymore. We have to do business differently, and we have to support students and coaches and athletic programs and universities differently.” Cohen states all revenue opportunities will be “on the table before we draw any lines,” adding: “All athletic directors are thinking 24/7 about revenue generation. Since I’ve been an AD, every day, every year, you’re challenged with finding more and new resources. The good news for us at USC is we have significant upside and unlimited potential to continue to monetize our athletic program, so we’ve got to roll up our sleeves.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini updates on the Pac-2’s future optionality - or potential lack thereof - as the Mountain West also strategically eyes the future: “Big picture, Oregon State and Washington State want to buy as much time as possible and see what happens elsewhere — perhaps, say, if Florida State and Clemson try to officially leave the ACC, that league might explore getting back to 17 members. Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes told The Athletic earlier this year that joining a Power 4 conference is the top priority, followed by some merger with the Mountain West. [...] What does hang over the Mountain West is its television deal, which recently added TNT Sports as a third partner and runs through 2025-26. That coincidentally times up with the Pac-2’s window. It’d be an easy moment to make an addition. But what about departures? The Mountain West office has maintained that its exit fee ($18 million, or $36 million for schools leaving within a year) applies regardless of the TV situation, something that was brought up last summer when San Diego State danced with the idea of leaving the league. Any attempt by Oregon State and Washington State to pull Group of 5 teams from multiple conferences would be very expensive, even with a $255 million war chest leftover from the Pac-12.” (link)

Coastal Carolina President Michael Benson covers several topics on the Higher Ed Athletics podcast, including how Chair of Athletics Joe Moglia and former Missouri AD Mike Alden lent their guidance to the AD search: “Not every university president has a Fortune 500, retired CEO right here on campus. But we have that advantage with Coach Moglia. He developed a relationship with Mike Alden, and Mike has been fantastic. … And we decided that we would just keep it kind of a three person endeavor at first. And then we broadened it to five people that served on a screening committee: our FAR, our senior women’s administrator, donor, a student-athlete, and it was chaired by our head of HR. And that screening committee, when we put out the posting, we got nearly 50 applications in pretty short order. And they got that down to 16, down to eight, they wanted to interview on Zoom.” On why the Chants chose Chance Miller as their new AD, Benson says he was “with South Carolina. He was with the NCAA in compliance. And prior to that he practiced law in New York, he’s got a law degree. And it brings so much to this position.” Benson also talks about unique challenges CCU must overcome to build the recently announced 8K-seat convocation center: “We’re surrounded by wetlands. And so the Army Corps of Engineers has to get involved in a lot of the mitigation for some of that wetlands and we’re moving University Boulevard, it’s probably a stretch of maybe a quarter mile. And that’s probably about an $8M project because of all the wetland studies and the mitigation we have to do. … But we’re so fortunate, again, to have the penny sales tax that helps pay for all that.” More from Benson. BYU AD Tom Holmoe comments on the potential impact of the proposed House settlement: “I think that every team, especially the power autonomy conferences, are saying that [they will fully participate in athlete revenue sharing]. I'll believe it when I see it. I think each team will have to go through that first year and maybe the second year of transition. I figure for BYU, we'll do our very best to get there. [...] You've got to be careful not to react or overreact too fast and get yourself into something that you don't want. I think our take is gonna be to get out of the blocks. You've gotta be out there and see what's going on but try to move in a direction it's gonna be best for us.” (link)
|
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey joins Connect’s Bryan Fischer to discuss the House settlement, expanding the Boise State brand, facilities updates, the process of making a football coaching change, NIL efforts and more. Dickey talks specifically about how the Broncos’ football matchup with Notre Dame will help elevate the brand: “When you think about their brand – and for us I do believe we have a national brand – to be able to attach to that and tell a story around it and the opportunities it's going to provide us from a donor standpoint and driving ticket sales…it really ignited a fire with our fan base. And that ties into the strategy of why and how we tell our story. When you look at the state of college football and with what happened last year, we're all trying to figure out what is that perfect scheduling model. And as a leader, I have to adapt and that's what we're currently going through.” Dickey goes on to emphasize the importance of winning non-conference football games.” Full conversation on Connect. Andy Wittry pens a guest post for Extra Points titled “How will the Million Dollar NIL basketball tournament make the math work? With documentaries?” With $1M guaranteed to the players on the winning team of the Players Era Festival in November in Las Vegas, plus a value of “at least” $1M per team for NIL activities that are “separate from competition,” Wittry explains how independent content studio EverWonder Studio and AND1 Basketball founder/former CEO Seth Berger, and their investors, plan on recouping their investment. Wittry: “They’ve considered creating a season-long docuseries or events elsewhere in the calendar, according to a copy of one school’s invitation letter. EverWonder Studio is financially backed by RedBird IMI.” San Diego State AD John David Wicker, whose Aztecs will be participating in the inaugural event, “I definitely heard from a documentary standpoint, I think everyone’s looking to capture what F1 did with their docuseries. There’s definitely an appetite for that type of content out there.” Also of note from Wittry: “89 Blocks Holdings, LLC – the official name of the one-year-old company that does business as EverWonder Studio – has filed a couple of trademark applications this year. One is for Players Era to be used for athletic apparel and footwear. The LLC filed another application regarding educational and entertainment content available through video-on-demand service, although it’s unclear if that trademark is related to the Players Era Festival.” Lots more. In what could have a direct impact on women’s college hoops, Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming examines how the WNBA’s new media rights windfall could impact players’ salaries and observes: “The smallest salary outlined in the current CBA was the minimum contract in 2020, worth $57K annually. That category will increase to $66,079 in the assumed final year of the CBA in ’25. Should those figures triple or quadruple, the lowest-paid WNBA player would make somewhere in the neighborhood of $200K. Jackie Young, the WNBA’s highest-paid player, currently makes $252,450 annually. Within a couple of years, the WNBA’s lowest-paid players will sign what not long ago were record-breaking contracts for the league.” Such salary movement, Fleming continues, could “dry up the pipeline of WNBA players going abroad to supplement their incomes. While the contracts abroad are still lucrative – superstars like Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart have both said they’ve made $1M annually playing in Russia – the WNBA might pay all players enough where they don’t have to go overseas to afford the costs of professional basketball.” Moreover, Fleming points out that “for the highest-paid players like Young, tripling their salaries would land upward of $750K, while quadrupling them would put the deals over $1M annually for the first time in league history. These bigger deals could instantly become some of the highest salary contracts in women’s team sports, bypassing the world’s highest-paid female soccer player Sam Kerr and her nearly $550K-per-year deal with Chelsea.” Meanwhile, team and roster expansion could cut into the pace of salary growth. “This season, the WNBA salary cap is $1,463,200 per team, and it is scheduled to grow by about $50K over each remaining year of the CBA. That’s still just a paltry $17.5M of spending on player salaries across the entire league this year.” More from Fleming. (link)

Former voice of the Cincinnati Reds/Fox Sports broadcaster Thom Brennaman has been hired as the lead voice for nationally televised college football games on The CW. Brennaman has sat on the sidelines the past four years after losing his job for uttering a homophobic slur on a hot mic during a baseball broadcast. He’ll make his debut on August 31 when Oregon State hosts Idaho State. While he will begin as part of The CW’s Pac-12 package, he will predominantly work on the ACC. (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved modifying video review challenges of runners leaving a base early on a pitch in softball. Under the new rule, coaches can challenge whether a runner left early if it is called on the field by an umpire or if a runner successfully advances a base on the play. However, the video review challenge would not be allowed on home runs, ground-rule doubles, foul balls and other scenarios. Other rule changes include allowing umpires to initiate a video review without requiring a coach's challenge at any point in the game when a play is not properly covered by an umpire and changing the penalty for pitch clock violations by the pitcher or catcher to an illegal pitch. (link)
|
The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel also approved an optional rule to allow video review challenges for all women's lacrosse games and allot coaches two review challenges per game beginning with the 2025 season. Other rule changes include: “Charging will no longer result in a one-minute releasable penalty between the restraining lines. Instead, it will be categorized as a general foul for the upcoming season. Another tweak to an existing rule is that on a ‘simultaneous whistle,’ where the goalkeeper saves the ball inside or outside the goal circle but does not maintain possession, play will continue; a free position no longer will be awarded to the goalkeeper.” More on the video review guidelines. (link)
|
Continuing the theme, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved modifying the video review criteria in men's lacrosse so coaches can make challenges using the previously approved situations within the criteria at any point in the game, effective for the 2025 season. Officials can initiate video review only in the last four minutes of regulation and in any overtime period. Under the new rule, officials can initiate reviews to identify participants in a fight or determine whether flagrant misconduct or unsportsmanlike conduct or contact to the head and/or neck took place at any time in the game. Another scenario that was added to the video review criteria will allow coaches to challenge whether a valid shot deflected off the goalie or the goal pipe to see whether the shot clock should be reset. Officials can initiate this type of video review, starting with the last four minutes of regulation. The panel also approved an adjustment to the faceoff officiating mechanic. Other rule changes: Players established in the defensive half of the field will only be able to bat or deflect the ball with their crosse to keep it in the offensive half of the field. Body contact with the ball will result in an over-and-back violation. A suspended coach or any other personnel cannot be in the confines of the venue from the time the team arrives until officials leave the field after the contest. Clear mouthguards will be permitted. (link)
|
Finally, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved placing red markings at each end of the men’s and women’s water polo field of play boundary lines to denote the goal area, effective for the 2024-25 season. Other rules changes include requiring member of the coaching staff to report a change in cap numbers to the referee; allowing the referee to issue warnings if delays in substitutions interfere with the progress of the game; and requiring individuals who receive a red card to leave the venue and remain out of sight and sound until the conclusion of the game.
