In his opening remarks at the MAC Football Kickoff, Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher asserted that “we have reached a point where we will need assistance to bring issues to conclusions. Decisions will be made either by the courts or by Congress. The Johnson case is a prime example of this. There was a ruling last week that will send the case back to district court for further review. We need to continue to engage with Congress to determine how scholar-athletes should be classified … The Mid-American Conference has been making the case that scholar-athletes are not employees.” Steinbrecher adds that he made four trips to Capitol Hill in the last academic year and notes: “Our membership has an obligation to be active in informing Congress as to what our issues are, and we will do that with our administrators, with our coaches and with our student-athletes.” Steinbrecher goes on to acknowledge that it’s “not hard to understand why many believe student-athletes should be permitted to share in the financial success of the enterprise when they are at institutions paying exorbitant buyouts for coaches. I would note that last year a school paid its football coach $76M after it fired him. It is completely understandable that the student-athletes believe they should have the unfettered ability to transfer from school-to-school and team-to-team despite the negative effect on educational attainment. After all, last year we witnessed a director of athletics move from one school to another and then six months later move again to another school. For those of you keeping track, that’s three schools in six months. Or another director of athletics that signed a contract extension and within months moved to another job.” Full address. (link)

Grambling State AD Trayvean Scott Q&As with the Ruston Leader’s Matt Belinson and on the topic of the House settlement, Scott would like to see Grambling have a louder voice in the conversation. “I do believe we need a more prominent seat at the table. But our mission is different when you talk about House and other schools. Cost of attendance is how it all began with NIL and now you have larger institutions with their collectives. You now have the Power 4 schools pulling from the Group of 5 and the Group of 5 is pulling from HBCUs and JUCOs and DII. It’s become a farm system. When you have college athletes making the same amount of money as a second or third round draft pick, something has to change. We need to have regulation of some kind.” Scott on facilities: “I’d like to take a huge step forward in facilities and we’ve already had quite a bit of discussion and planning on that end. The football players’ lounge is coming together, and we still need to button up some things over there. I’m excited for Tiger Park and I think there’s a high level of interest when that begins. We have some plans for the baseball field with additional padding and beautification. We’re working on additional plans for locker rooms for our programs as well.” (link)

Freshly minted Playfly CEO Craig Sloan talks with On3’s Eric Prisbell about the disruption within college athletics and says: “It’s an incredible period – and advisement, and also activation of that advisement, has never been more necessary. Some of these programs across college are not only getting pressured for normal revenue growth, but now they are actually being pressured for keeping certain sports teams alive or to rebalance challenging budget parameters. You can only do that so much by pulling down your costs.” For all the change that has already taken place, Sloan contends the “most profound change in this will still happen in the next three years. The next three years you’re going to see more business-oriented people, more business-oriented decisions about how they’re running their athletic departments that will take advantage of the real estate, take advantage of their IP, take advantage of this tremendous fan experience and fandom that is there, and the lifelong value of that fandom.” Sloan also believes athletic departments need to focus on understanding the structures that will allow for sustainability rather than on one-off fundraisers. “From that perspective, we feel like we’ve got a tremendous upside to start to do a marketplace correction on the perception of it. And then also the value that’s being achieved through it for brands that are investing in the sponsorship level.” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Murphy & Adam Rittenberg write on the football situation at Utah State & the exit of HC Blake Anderson: “Utah State's athletic director and university president told football coach Blake Anderson that he was fired for attempting to personally investigate the circumstances of a player's domestic violence arrest, according to a termination letter obtained by ESPN Friday. Anderson contacted the girlfriend and roommate of a Utah State football player in April 2023 after learning that the player had been arrested due to an alleged domestic abuse incident, according to an investigation commissioned by the university. Anderson said he was on a ‘fact-finding mission’ to determine if the player should be suspended or if they needed to take any further action, according to an investigative report obtained via public records request.” Lots more. More from Anderson‘s attorney Tom Mars as he shares an excerpt from Anderson’s 70-page response to USU’s notification of intent to terminate. The excerpt includes the following: “With no known exceptions, schools which tried to stiff their head coach suffered months or years of bad publicity and eventually paid as much or more in settlements, attorneys’ fees, and expenses than they would have paid at the outset had they not turned against and tried to fleece their once-adored head coach. … USU’s negligence in not seeking to understand the limitations of its own policies, violating every standard that governs professional investigations, and grasping at straws to find ‘cause’ has resulted in,” among other things, making false allegations against Anderson and parting ways with three other employees “who also did nothing wrong.” Mars: “Full response to follow with attached exhibits, which include USU’s termination letter, investigation summary, court records, and witness statements.” Full excerpt. The MAC is adding women’s rowing beginning with the 2025-26 season. The league will start with six teams as Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Massachusetts will be joined by new affiliate members Delaware, High Point and Temple. This is a sport that continues to grow in popularity, and I am already looking forward to awarding our first championship in May 2026.” (link)

Holiday Bowl Executive Director Mark Neville tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner that bowls selecting from the erstwhile Pac-12 will do so in order of overall record rather than conference record. “Neville indicated that the traditional framework will be applied with respect to protecting teams from getting jumped in the pecking order: Bowls can pass over one team for another as long as there is no more than a one-game difference in record.” Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli adds: “The contracts between the conferences and the bowl games were based on the membership at the time. The dynamics have changed. But for all parties involved, it was best to try to simulate the way things have been for the last four years.” (link)

The MAC also announces a new partnership with Officially Human, an organization dedicated to improving the treatment and retention of sports officials at all levels. Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher: “Our partnership with Officially Human aligns with the Mid-American Conference’s commitment to sportsmanship and respect within our athletic programs. Through this collaboration, we aim to provide our member institutions with vital programming to elevate the respect and treatment of officials, ensuring a positive and respectful environment for all participants.” (link)

Commissioners are “zeroing in on 105 as the proposed roster limit for football teams,” according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, who notes that “SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, in an interview with The Athletic, would not confirm or deny that number, only that athletic directors and coaches are in the process of being told.” Also from Sankey: “Change never produces full satisfaction. Hopefully we can land on a healthy place, we’re just going to have to deal with things in a little different way, as part of the outcome of our settlement.” Asked whether he thinks 105 is a good roster cap, Arkansas Football HC Sam Pittman replied: “No. But it’s better than what I thought we were gonna get. We can deal with 105. Obviously 110 was the number the coaches wanted.” Emerson goes on to note that Sankey “confirmed that the scholarship limits will not be set individually by conferences. But he hedged on whether they could differ between Power 4 conferences and Group of 5 conferences.” Sankey: “There’s stages to all of this. And this is yet another stage in the process. So some of those answers will have to be in this stage. Some will come in the next stage.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey talks with ESPN/SEC Network host Paul Finebaum about why the league can’t let distractions interrupt its progress: “What I say scrolls on ESPN throughout the day, and I may say something later that scrolls the next day. And so 16 is our today, 16 is our tomorrow. I think that's very clear. That’s our focus. There are other distractions out there, and I'm not going to be distracted from the work we have for the Southeastern Conference as it exists because of what's happening around us. I have to pay attention, but I won't be distracted, and I encourage the same for members. So, that scroll, that was a good line, but it provoked more questions.” Sankey also talks about his remarks concerning outside interests’ intervention in college sports. “Private equity…our responsibility is resolving our issues and not falling into the trap that, ‘oh there's an idea that's got to be better than the frustrations we have internally.’ What’s equally important is we have to be open to ideas and new concepts. That's our responsibility both as we deal with the issues in front of us and as we seek to grow revenue. I think that’s a pretty responsible balance to say, ‘let’s not be chasing every new idea when some of that has put us into some of these challenges we have.’ Let’s focus on who we are, make sure we understand the principles, and maybe we can access some of these ideas. But let's do it on our terms, not terms dictated to us by others that cedes control to some other entity.” More from Sankey. (link)

SWAC Commissioner Charles McClelland believes his league can compete with Group of 5 teams, noting during SWAC Media Day that “there are enough matchups now within the Southwestern Athletic Conference that you can play games falling off that are critical games – East-West games that will fall off for two years. You can play those games and make that money, but also give us the opportunity from a standpoint of what the FCS Committee is looking at to get you an at-large bid. Those are the things that we're trying to do and the membership has bought into that. So, we want to remain insulated in what we do, but we also want to be cognizant of what's going on outside and around us and continue to be nimble and make those moves to put us in a position to be successful right now. A student-athlete at the SWAC won't get paid as much as the student-athlete in the SEC. That was true 100 years ago and that's going to be true 100 years from now, but what we need to do is continue to grow so that we can compete at our level. And you asked what our level is. Our level is FCS and, in my opinion and the opinion of several of our athletic directors, that's some of the Group of 5 institutions, and that's where we're looking at competing. … We still have some work to do but that's the trajectory that we're going.” (link)

Given the uncertainty of the post-House landscape, Missouri AD Laird Veatch says it’s important to “go through this next year sort of modeling all kinds of different options and really being willing to step back and think about the college athletics model, if you will, how we've operated very differently. So it's going to take a significant amount of time and thought, consideration from folks in our department and others that we're going to have to bring in to think about it and look at how we're operating. And being willing to consider things differently. You’re going to be modeling it, looking at it, trying to analyze different angles…to position yourself to manage that the best you can – and in a way that it gives you an advantage hopefully from a competitive standpoint.” (link)

Tulane AD David Harris talks about making the move to New Orleans from Cedar Falls, where his wife and son stayed behind while the latter finished seventh grade. Harris’ daughter will also join the family while taking a gap year between graduating from Iowa State and potentially beginning law school. “The personal part of the transition can be just as challenging as the professional part. We did it the right way for us, but it wasn’t without challenges. Our family was kind of broken into three parts. It will be re-unified here in New Orleans, and I’m excited about that.” On campus, Harris says construction on a new indoor football facility projected to cost around $7M is expected to be finished in December or January. “We were looking to do the construction in totality this summer, but we got word the pieces needed for construction of the bubble would not be in or available until later on in the fall, so we had to pivot. With any construction project, there’s a likelihood it’s not going to go exactly as you planned. It doesn’t change our optimism and our plans this will ultimately get done.” As far as the potential next wave of conference realignment, Harris says: “What’s going to move the needle in those conversations has nothing to do with what’s said publicly. You can run the risk of damaging relationships or creating false hope. Generally speaking, the most important conversations on this topic and topics like it are private. Those are the ones that tend to result in some type of change.” (link)

The Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees proposed changes to first contest dates for regular-season competition beginning with the 2025-26 season. The changes specify that schools could begin playing their first regular-season contests on the Wednesday that is 22 weeks before the start of the respective NCAA Tournament championship games. “In addition, for women's basketball, starting the season on a Monday and a different first contest date than men's basketball would allow for greater flexibility with competition venues and men's and women's television window conflicts.” The recommended dates are currently in the NCAA DI legislative process designed to seek feedback from the broader membership and must still be approved by the DI Council in October. ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz talks to D1Baseabll’s Kendall Rogers about reports of a baseball roster limit of 35 student-athletes: “Usually in a situation in college baseball where there’s uncertainty, there’s bad news ahead, but that is simply not the case here. We are in favor of a 35-man roster, for no other reason than that is the number that it takes to put together a baseball team with safety in mind for the student-athletes. I’ve heard behind the scenes about athletic directors who want less than 35 players on the roster, and I’d say this – I think they owe it to their coaches, league, and us to let us know why they think that way. If you’re going to say you want fewer than 35 players on the roster, give us compelling reasons to consider that. That’s all I ask for.” While it remains to be seen how some mid-majors will react to this news, Keilitz notes: “In many ways…this won’t be much different than the current situation. When you consider the rosters, the 11.7, need-based aid, academic aid, and NIL money on top of that, many mid-majors are already living through this environment of disparity. That’s just the new reality – there is no equity anymore. That has been gone for quite some time. It’s far gone at this point.” (link)

Utah State has notified Football HC Blake Anderson that it is terminating his contract for cause and explains: “This action is based on significant violations of his contractual obligations related to USU’s employee reporting requirements. These reporting requirements include a prohibition on employees outside the USU Office of Equity from investigating issues of sexual misconduct, including domestic violence. Additionally, Anderson failed to manage the team in a manner that reflects USU’s academic values. Consistent with Anderson’s employment agreement, the university provided him with written notice of its intent to terminate and 14 days to respond. To USU’s disappointment, Anderson’s response failed to acknowledge his responsibilities as a USU employee and as a head coach and instead sought to make excuses and unsuccessfully recast the clear language of USU’s policies.” President Elizabeth Cantwell: “While I recognize that today’s decision has a significant impact, it is the only one that could be made based on the facts. We are committed to moving forward in building a winning Athletics program grounded in student success and integrity.” (link); Anderson’s attorney Tom Mars responds to the decision, noting that “Coach Anderson’s legal team believes this decision – as well as USU’s deliberately inflammatory July 2nd press release – violate the terms of Coach Anderson’s Employment Agreement and the implied covenant of good faith. … Coach Anderson will be issuing his own statement at the appropriate time.” (link)

Arizona will no longer call itself UArizona, discontinuing an abbreviation it adopted in 2019. Instead, the school prefers Arizona as shorthand or, when that causes confusion with the state, the U of A. When it made the change in 2019, Arizona noted that several other entities, including Alabama and Under Armour, use the UA abbreviation. According to U of A’s written style guide, U of A “must be written as ‘U of A’ with spaces, and not ‘UofA’ or any other deviation. When ‘U of A’ is used as a noun, it must be referenced as ‘the U of A.’” (link)

Phase 2 of Memphis’ three-phase, $220M Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium renovation project will begin in earnest on Monday. The second phase includes demolition work on the west side tower and the addition of a "party patio" area to the east side of the stadium, per the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz, who adds: “That area will be situated behind 24 rows of seats and will have concessions and areas to watch the game. It will be open to all fans at the stadium. There will also be multiple levels of new suites and club seating.” Interim AD Jeff Crane: “[We’re] gonna take some big steps here in the next couple weeks. There’s actually been some bits of pieces of [Phase 2] that are already under way as we speak. Everything above row 25 will be demolished, making way for the rebuild of the west side [which] will create a new premium seating tower. … While the fan experience may be impacted in some ways this season, we know that what lies ahead is going to be a huge difference in the fan experience – which will be ready to go for the 2026 season.” (link)

WFAN’s Lou DiPietro notes the Yankees drafted 19 college student-athletes, 18 from four-year schools, and Fangraphs Assoc. Editor Matt Martell asked Yankees VP/Director of Amateur Scouting Damon Oppenheimer about whether shorter drafts and NIL could mean teams will focus more on college athletes. Oppenheimer’s response: “We actually found a lot more high school kids were receptive to sign because they saw guys sit their whole freshman year because of older portal transfers. But we're also seeing college guys that were more signable that are now getting NIL money and going back as juniors.” (link)
