Wisconsin knocked off defending champs Ohio State to clinch the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey title yesterday by a final score of 1-0. It was the Badgers seventh natty, the most ever by a women’s hockey program in the Frozen Four. The WCHA has now had a member win 19 of the last 22 titles with only Clarkson’s three as the outliers. Interim Fairleigh Dickinson President Avaltroni on how the university intends to leverage its valuable March Madness spotlight: “This is our university’s story. We’re an athletic program that gives opportunities to athletes who might not have been recruited somewhere else. And we’ve always been a place for students who are taking a chance on themselves - students who might not even know whether college was a good fit for them. This is so much more important than just one game. [...] We feel very good about our future, but like all of higher education now, we’re at an important crossroads of how we adapt to changes. We have to use this as a springboard to tell our story.” (link)

Nebraska AD Alberts foresees a day when student-athletes in revenue-producing sports will share in the profits. “I believe it’s likely that either through the courts or a proactive move that a portion of revenue that’s currently used to subsidize all our programs is going to be redirected directly to student-athletes. We need to prepare ourselves for that reality." In the case of that eventuality, Alberts believes the Huskers are positioned well, as the department carries no debt, receives no subsidies from the university and finished last season with a $60M profit from football. “I think the University of Nebraska is uniquely positioned to not only weather this storm, but to emerge from it in a very strong position. I like our chances.” (link)

Princeton’s run to the MBB Sweet Sixteen is worth more to its Ivy League peers given the smaller number of the Ancient 8 as compared to other conferences. Sportico’s Novy-Williams: “Ivy League schools will average roughly $250K per unit; schools in the 15-team Atlantic 10 will average about $133K. While the ~$6M that Princeton has already earned for the Ivy League may not look like much, especially considering that half the Ivy schools have endowments of more than $20B, it’s not an insignificant amount for their athletic departments. The Tigers reported a men’s basketball budget of $1.7M last season. An even cut of $6M would be close to half of that total.” (link)

SBJ’s Karp reports the NCAA MBB Tournament had its most-watched first round on record, with an average of 9.2M viewers on CBS, truTV, TBS and TNT. Friday’s matchups averaged 9.3M across the four windows, with the early primetime slot averaging a record 11.7M viewers. Thursday was up 2% YoY with the early afternoon window averaging 6.8M, marking the best figure for that window on record and up 15% from last year. (link)

Virginia Deputy AD Scott joins AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to discuss how his time as AD at Morgan State taught him to “buckle up” when approaching challenges and the development of four leadership questions that inform his personal decision-making process and organizational philosophy: “Who am I? Who do I want to be? How am I going to get there? Who and what can help me?” Scott also talks about ensuring the opportunities he accepts align with his values, explaining that it starts with the “who.” Scott adds: “Even making the move from being an AD at Morgan State and going to work with [UVA AD] Carla [Williams] and being at UVA, it was who. I was very intentional. Carla is the first Black female to run a Power 5. I was coming from an HBCU. I had never worked for a female athletic director. Carla has her doctorate. So, the who was really, really important for me. If I was going to give up control of running a department and humble myself to know I wasn’t going to be making the final decision, it had to be somebody who I believed in unequivocally.” Lots more in the full interview. North Carolina led the country in MBB attendance per game at 19,890, narrowly edging out Kentucky, which averaged 19,873. The Wildcats’ total attendance was 357,721, the highest mark in the country. Syracuse had the third highest average attendance (19,102), followed by Arkansas (19,051), Tennessee (18,781), Creighton (17,163), Kansas (16,300), Indiana (16,101), Illinois (15,091) and Purdue (14,876) in the top 10. Full list, per the Wall Street Journal’s Bachman. (link); Bachman also reports the South Carolina WBB team averaged 13,308 per contest, more than all but the top 19 MBB teams. (link)

The Athletic’s Deitsch offers a look inside CBS’ broadcast of Fairleigh Dickinson’s upset over Purdue, noting that producer Thayer, who was in Charlotte when UMBC upset Virginia in 2018, began thinking about the prospect of history repeating. Thayer, Deitsch notes, started to cue up a flashback of the 2018 game as the first half was coming to a close and informed play-by-play broadcaster Catalon and analyst Lappas that the UMBC highlight was coming after an ad break. “I said to them during commercial, ‘I might do UMBC here,’ and sure enough, to his credit, Catalon hits me on the talk-back and said, ‘Wait, wait wait! It’s too early. It’s too early!’ He talked me down because I was getting too into the moment. But at that moment, I felt like I did during UMBC-Virginia, where I was said to myself, ‘This could really happen.'” Lots more in a pretty cool look behind the scenes. (link)

Illinois professor/BracketOdds Founder Jacobson talks with the AP’s Anderson about the averages and statistics regarding upsets, noting that “although it looks like, ‘Wow, we have these big upsets,′ statistically speaking, it is not that unusual. There’s not much difference between a five, six or seven and a 10, 11 or 12. Surely, the five, six and seven are going to win more often, but not that much more often statistically speaking.” Jacobson also explains the data indicates that “you want one or two No. 1s. You probably want a No. 2 also — sorry, Arizona — but after that, you want anything between a three and 11, and it’s pretty much a crapshoot. All the sports pundits say, ‘I can’t imagine any of the ones losing.’ I guarantee they’re going to lose. In fact, I guarantee two of them are going to lose and maybe three before we get to the Final Four.” (link)

UBS has agreed to acquire Credit Suisse for more than $3B as part of an “urgent effort engineered by Swiss and global authorities to restore trust in the banking system,” per the Wall Street Journal, which also reports the “Swiss government said it would provide more than $9B to backstop some losses that UBS may incur by taking over Credit Suisse. The Swiss National Bank also provided more than $100B of liquidity to UBS to help facilitate the deal.” Credit Suisse was facing as much as $10B in customer outflows per day last week, causing concerns among regulators, who worried its failure could make Switzerland a new source of contagion for global banking stress. The Federal Reserve, Bank of England, Bank of Japan, Bank of Canada, Swiss National Bank and European Central Bank announced they were “taking coordinated action to enhance the provision of liquidity via the standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap line arrangements.” Specifically, the “central banks offering U.S. dollar operations have agreed to increase the frequency of seven-day maturity operations from weekly to daily,” beginning today. Bloomberg’s Hou: “Totally normal announcement to be made at 5pm on Sun. There’s absolutely no liquidity crunch in the global financial system.” Presumably, Hou was being sarcastic. (link)

“There’s an old real estate analogy that even coach (Mark) Few told me once — we don’t have to have the nicest house in the neighborhood. But we gotta live in the neighborhood, to be able to compete. That’s the mentality, to make sure there’s not a gap that you can’t overcome.” That’s Gonzaga AD Standiford as The Athletic’s Hamilton writes on the latest speculation around conference affiliation for the Zags. More from Standiford: “We’ve been able to survive and prosper in the environment where we’ve been, how we’ve been doing it. But we can’t be naive to how much is changing around us, and (we have to) be prepared to (discern) that path forward.” (link)

Tennessee AD White tells the Orlando Sentinel’s Bianchi he expects the Vols to sell out all season tickets at Neyland Stadium in advance of next football season, which includes nearly 70,000 seats. Other notable comments from White: “I think college athletics needs to catch up with pro sports in terms of how we interact with the market. I think more college athletic programs need to look like NBA and NFL front offices. [...] Obviously, a lot of things have changed and I’m on a different side of the conversation now that I’m at Tennessee versus when I was at UCF. But what hasn’t changed is my advocacy for an expanded playoff and access to the playoff. This is going to be great for college football with more compelling games, more compelling conference championship races and obviously a more compelling postseason.” (link)

Under Oregon HB2472, which is sponsored by Rep. Bynum (D - Clackamas), college coaches and athletic directors at public universities in the state could face one-week suspensions if fans “engage in the use of derogatory or inappropriate names, insults, verbal assaults, profanity or ridicule in violation of equity focused policies.” Public universities could also lose state grants and scholarship money and support from the Oregon State Police if they fail to enact and enforce policies that address such language that occurs at school events, including sporting events. Oregon State AD Barnes on the measure: “Fan behavior and the safety of all who attend our athletic events is of paramount importance to OSU. Our athletic event code of conduct is supported by policies and procedures which foster appropriate behavior and the safety of all our fans as well as students, student athletes and coaches. These continue to be reviewed annually. Although well intended, HB 2472 includes elements that are either unnecessary or impractical.” On March 28 there will be a work session for the bill. (link)

When UTSA announced its move to the American Athletic Conference, President Eighmy set a goal of getting the athletic department’s budget to $40M by 2025. The Roadrunners ended FY22 at $39.2M in expenses and AD Campos expects the sum to rise to $45M to account for increases in coaching salaries, travel, broadcast production, etc. Revenue in FY22 was $38.2M, which included $9.2M in direct institutional support, but marked the first time since 2018 that UTSA fell in the red. Campos: “I think our budget is really healthy, and will continue to be. There’s strategy to it, and we’ll continue to make sure we’re growing.” More. (link)

Wright State AD Grant on losing MBB star student-athletes to Power 5 schools this past offseason due, in part, to NIL & no year-in-residence for transfers:: “Grant [Basile] leaves and Tanner [Holden] leaves — and I genuinely love both of them. I don’t blame them one bit. But that was not possible before these huge changes in our business. … When you’ve got no-sit transfers — and a transfer portal that’s more like a dating app — and you start throwing around big money, it’s completely foreign to the way we’ve operated in history. … It’s mind-boggling to think we’ve gotten here. But we’ve got two options at Wright State. We can bury our head in the sand and say, ‘This is not fair, it’s not good.’ Or we can go full bore ahead and not look back and figure it out like we always do.” Grant says a collective of former Raider hoops players is close to going public, “In our landscape, collectives are as necessary as corporate partners and fans and great facilities and great coaches and a great culture. As the athletic director, we need to have that kind of support, and we’re going to have it.” (link)

Up for discussion during the March 23 University of Hawai’i Board of Regents meeting is College Sports Solutions’ independent assessment of the Rainbow Warriors athletics department, relating to student-athlete welfare, communications and concerns. CSS was hired by the BOR to review allegations made regarding climate and behaviors within the UH football program. Findings: no criminal behavior, no violations of NCAA, Mountain West or Big West Conference rules, BOR policies were not ignored, response by key personnel was “appropriate and timely.” Key note from the report: The department can “improve its communication of those policies and procedures and its encouragement of student-athletes to voice thoughts and concerns about their sports and their overall well-being and welfare—athletically, academically, medically and personally.” More. + Fox Sports Radio host Gottlieb says for the right opportunity to coach at the collegiate level, he would give up radio, but not the podcast. Gottlieb: “That’s what I want to do. And last year when I was coaching in Israel, that also continued to invigorate me…this is something that I would really like to do. It has to be the right thing. It has to be the right AD who hits the right message.” Gottlieb reportedly interviewed at Wisconsin-Green Bay & Bowling Green. (link)
+ St. John’s alumnus Repole, the billionaire co-founder of Vitamin Water, makes it known he supports the potential hiring of Iona MBB HC Pitino and as such would take himself off the “previous booster” list. Repole: “If St. John’s offers Rick Pitino the job and Rick Pitino decides to accept the position, I definitely would be involved in both helping the basketball team financially and helping Rick out with NIL.” (link)

Former UNLV AD Livengood reflects on his experience in Sin City & how it's translated to Vegas getting ready to host an NCAA MBB Tournament Regional: “Everyone talked about UNLV being a mile from the Strip and all the issues it created, but that was not what I found at all. I found the casino people and everyone associated with UNLV, it was the least of my worries, and yet around the country, there was such a fear of sports books and gaming.” Former Rebels Assoc. AD Allen was also a part of the local team that lobbied college athletics leaders to consider Las Vegas as a sleeping asset for the industry, an effort made easier with NACDA’s 2015 commitment to host its annual convention in Vegas in 2020 & 2022: “Getting the initial feedback, there was probably a little more pushback than we anticipated. You’ve got to realize that, in this industry, people aren’t willing to make big changes for somebody else. So it was, ‘OK, we’ve got to go about this differently. How do we get the industry to think about Las Vegas differently?’ [...] When people tell Vegas we can’t do something, we have a tendency to prove them wrong. It’s amazing what you can do when you get a group of talented people together that don’t worry about who’s taking the credit. This is going to be great for the city.” (link)

Meanwhile, CBI/Gazelle Group Founder Giles tells Sportico’s Libit his postseason event continues to prosper: “We have 16 teams coming to one site. The NCAA has eight teams coming to eight sites. I guarantee we run a much more streamlined, cost-efficient operation.” Giles also notes NIL is advancing the industry (this year the CBI is splitting NIL money for winning teams - $40,000 to be split among the champions, $25,000 to the runner-ups and $2,500 apiece to the semifinalists), but pay-for-play is still coming down the train tracks: “What has happened over the last few years is a signal or sign that the (college sports) bureaucracy as it exists does not work. Not in practice or the courts. That is why (the NCAA) came up with the transformation committee. [...] I hope that there will be dramatic change more quickly than there has been. There was this great resistance to NIL. Now all of a sudden that is being embraced, and there is resistance to pay-for-play. Well, guess what? There shouldn’t be.” (link)

According to Barron’s Carlson: “Rattled by a volatile stock market and the Federal Reserve’s spate of interest-rate increases, more investors are hiding out in cash-alternative mutual funds and short-term bond exchange-traded funds. Total inflows into money-market funds through mid-March were a net $96.8 billion, according to Refinitiv Lipper, the largest inflow over the first 2½ months of a calendar year since 2008. Short-term U.S. Treasury bond funds saw their third-largest monthly inflows on record—$10 billion—in February.” (link)
