Hagens Berman attorney Steve Berman expects the full House settlement agreement to be filed on Friday: “We’re very close to wrapping. The amount of disputes right now are tiny.” Berman also tells the AP’s Ralph Russo the defendants have asked for the dismissal of Houston Christian’s pushback: “There’s no publicly filed agreement to be challenging at the moment. So we thought it was premature, among other defects.” More: “So the way this is going to work out is that at some point like 60, 70 days from now, after the notice goes out, if you’re an athlete, you’ll be able to get on a website and put your name in and the website will tell you how much you’re going to get out of the settlement.” (link)

The Rose Bowl tells the College Football Playoff it does not want to be involved in the semifinal stage of the event to ensure it can continue to be played in its traditional slot on New Year’s Day. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel: “Were the Rose Bowl to be granted its wish, it’s unclear how it would affect the other bowls’ rotation. Were the current format to remain in place, the Rose Bowl would have presumably hosted semis again after the 2026 and ’29 seasons. The new deal runs through the 2031-32 postseason.” (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, this time in a chat with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “A really good story is being overshadowed by speculation and legal challenges. Because it’s undeniable the year that we’re coming off of.” Phillips also touched on discussions with ESPN to extend the media deal between the two parties: “We’ve made really significant progress. The conversations have been really productive.” (link)

Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill kicked off the league’s media days. Of note on the potential of a separate Group of 5 playoff: “We just aren’t really interested. The Sun Belt is fully committed to the CFP and only wants to participate in polls and postseason that includes all nine FBS conferences and Notre Dame. We do not see greatness with caveats.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft from the Big Ten event in Indianapolis on lots of talk around private equity: “Why would I give up my money? I love this private equity, they’re basically saying we’re dumb. We don’t know how to run our business. ... Why would Penn State take private equity money? I’ve got 94,000 season ticket holders. We sell out hockey. We sell out wrestling. I’ve got the best fanbase in the country. Why do I need private equity? So someone can tell me I’m stupid? I have enough people around me to tell me I’m stupid. [...] My business is to take care of my kids. If you look at a balance sheet, half the stuff we do you would never do. But I want my fencing team to win a national championship. I want my gymnasts to win a national championship. They need to get an education. We need to take care of them as human beings and help them grow through this process.” (link)

Boise State law professor Sam C. Ehrlich via X (Twitter): “Interesting circumstances afoot in Fontenot v. NCAA...The plaintiffs filed an amended complaint adding 3 new members: Deontay Anderson (ex-Houston/Ole Miss football), Tucker Clark (current Colorado golfer), & Sarah Fuller (former Vanderbilt soccer **& football**).” Ehrlich also points out an addition to the pleading: “105. Defendants realize that there is no longer any defense for the concept of amateurism. They recently voted to move forward with a proposed settlement in the House case that would usher in a form of “revenue sharing” that ostensibly would be tied to NIL payments made by the NCAA’s members. But even if that settlement is approved, it would simply usher in a new, artificially low cap that is far below the revenue sharing that a competitive market would yield. While it is an admission that amateurism is not needed, it also simply substitutes one illegal price fix for another. 106. This case seeks to recover the full amount of compensation that these athletes truly deserve, and to enjoin Defendants from enforcing their illegal agreement in the future. It is not just about NIL but is about full revenue sharing.” (link)

Former Florida Director of Player Engagement/NIL Marcus Castro-Walker, Gators Football HC Billy Napier and prominent booster Hugh Hathcock filed a motion to dismiss the seven-count complaint former Gators recruit Jaden Rashada filed in May against the trio and Hathcock’s car company alleging fraud, negligence and interfering with business deals. From Napier’s motion: “Nothing alleged in the complaint supports the notion that Napier participated in any wrongdoing. … Nowhere does the complaint adequately allege, for example, that Napier knew about whatever occurred between Rashada, his ‘NIL agents,’ and the Gator Collective, LLC. In fact, the complaint makes clear that Napier could not have defrauded Rashada, since the sole statement attributed to Napier is alleged to have been made after Rashada had already abandoned the Miami [(FL)] NIL deal.” More. Former Harvard Women’s Ice Hockey HC Katey Stone is suing her former employer with a sex discrimination suit filed yesterday in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts. In it, she accuses the school of forcing her out over false allegations, which, the complaint says, is “part and parcel of a larger culture at the University wherein female coaches are undervalued, underpaid, heavily scrutinized, and held to a breathtakingly more stringent standard of behavior than their male counterparts.” Also from the complaint: “Where female coaches, such as Coach Stone, are expected to be nurturing toward their female players and coach with compassion and sensitivity, male coaches are allowed to be ‘tough’ and hold their male players accountable for their actions, level of play, and effort. Defendant Harvard has granted some male coaches a free pass to coach, motivate, and speak to Defendant Harvard’s male student athletes as the male coaches see fit.” (link)

The Southern Conference is set to announce a new partnership with TrailRunner Sports for its media rights process and basketball tournament-site planning, per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. Commissioner Michael Cross: “[We] had had some ongoing conversation going back to my first few months in the role here. We started talking about things that are coming up -- strategic planning, all these types of things -- and ultimately, I felt like the timing to get into this was right about now. I didn't want to go through [our last year of the TV deal] without clarity about where we're going to be with TV and where we're going to be for our championship.” The SoCon media rights deals with ESPN, CBS Sports and Nexstar each run through 2026. The existing agreement with the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission to host the men's and women's basketball tournaments at the Harrah's Cherokee Center-Asheville expires after the 2026 events. Florida Atlantic set an all-time record in athletics fundraising with a $23M haul in FY24, marking a 51% increase YOY. That fundraising success comes thanks, in large part, to the 34 six- and seven-figure gifts athletics has received over the last six years – the most in any six-year span in school history. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti kicked-off the league’s preseason football event: “When I was chosen to succeed Mike (Aresco), Ralph Russo from the AP asked me why I wanted to return to college athletics when many were looking to get out… easy to answer.
Investment. My experience as a football student-athlete changed my life. It provided me with a great education, incredible football memories, lasting friendships, and invaluable life-skills. 30 years later, collegiate athletics continues to be a formula that paves the way for our future teachers, entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders. It is a model worth modernizing…and investing in. [...] Invest in our brand, our business… and our people. And no, this is not our pitch to private capital – it’s our why. [...] During the 2023 season, the American had approximately 2.5 million fans that attended our football games…the most of our peer group. Our brand was also the most talked about in comparison to our peers, dominating the conversation at 33%. [...] We are going to maximize the American brand by creating original content that goes beyond gameday and establishes a year-round conversation and engagement between our student-athletes and fans and supporters. [...] It is also the time to invest in the collegiate athletics model…and new business and enterprise strategies. [...] Whether it's a private capital group, a creative corporate partner looking to break new ground, they see what we know, college athletics has failed to modernize the enterprise until it was faced with a crisis. [...] But…they also see that it is overflowing with committed leadership who is mission-driven. [...] If collegiate athletics is in such bad shape, do you really think we would be experiencing such accelerated growth, and outside entities would want to invest in us? The fact is, it’s an enterprise worth investing in. The intangibles are unmatched. It fuels passion, loyalty, celebrates resilience, builds character, and most importantly… provides educational opportunities. Despite the unknowns…at the American…we are going to jump the curve.” Lots more. (link)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti hit the stage in Indianapolis: “Look, we're focused on the 18 right now. That's what we're focused on. We had to do a lot of work. A lot of work had been done to integrate USC, UCLA. We started that work over immediately when we added Oregon and Washington. I think we're really comfortable where we are. We've got to get this conference right, and that's what our focus is. [...] If you look at our footprint on Saturday, having the three broadcast partners supported by the cable presence and Big Ten Network, I think Friday is an opportunity for national exposure. I think you're going to see some programs there really embrace the opportunity to play on Friday. [...] There's a lot to unpack in the House settlement. We expect it to be filed hopefully this week and then go through the process with Judge Wilken to get it to a final position sometime, we're hoping, in the next several months. That new model is going to require a lot of changes in terms of how we operate. We now have a situation where schools can provide benefits directly to student-athletes. There's a cap on that system. We have to monitor what schools are spending, so you need a reporting system there that doesn't exist. We need a process to evaluate true NIL deals. We want student-athletes to be able to take advantage of their name and likeness. We need to make sure that's what's really happening. Look, the role of third parties to the extent that third parties can connect student-athletes to real NIL opportunities, that's a great thing. I think that's the priority. [...] But a lot of decisions will be made locally. This system is built to allow institutions to make individual decisions about what programs they want to support, how much they want to invest, what student-athletes get what, how many scholarships they offer, because we're eliminating scholarship limits. All of those decisions will be made institution by institution, and I think that's the right way to do it.” Lots more. (link); Of additional note, the league announced its Football title game will stay in Indy through 2028. (link)

Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain chats with the Hattiesburg American’s Sam Sklar about revenue sharing, facility upgrades and more. On the Golden Eagles’ approach to revenue sharing: “I think it's too early and so in my mind it's more of just kind of the mindset of let's make sure we're doing everything we can to maximize fundraising, to put ourselves in the right position financially to prepare to make some adjustments in scholarships if that's what comes through.” The $35M renovation to Reed Green Coliseum is still on track to be completed in 2027, while the new golf facility is set to open September 1. Penn State signs a decade-long deal with Oak View Group to become the Nittany Lions’ first food and beverage partner. PSU Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James: “One of the strengths of our football experience is the volume of people who come to our games, and we don’t take that for granted. That’s what led us to want to outsource to professionals in the space. The fan experience was paramount in this decision-making.” (link)

Maryland introduces a new ticket pricing model for football and men’s basketball that transitions to a per seat contribution beginning with the 2025-26 seasons. As part of that transition, the Terrapin Club will shift to an all-in giving model combining all Maryland Athletics gifts into a single contribution total which will be utilized to determine a donor’s member level. Football and Men’s Basketball season-ticket holders, in alignment with a 2025 seat adjustment, will then be able to select the options that work best for them as part of the new structure utilizing an updated Terpoint priority system to determine the order of selection for tickets and parking. Additionally, as part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade and modernize the fan experience, The Maryland Club will be opening at XFINITY Center this fall, offering an exclusive bar, dining, lounge and gameday experience, while 17,000 lower-bowl seats at SECU Stadium will be widened by 20% for the fall of 2025. AD Damon Evans: "As we continue to invest in the championship resources needed to win at the highest levels, it is important that we reimagine the fan experience from all angles while keeping pace and evolving with the rest of our peers in the Big Ten and nationally. By advancing these plans, we aim to empower our current season ticket holders while welcoming a new generation of fans to join us at SECU Stadium and XFINITY Center for an even better and more enjoyable experience." Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano says the Scarlet Knights’ indoor practice facility project has “taken a backseat” to NIL efforts. “If somebody wants to step up and stroke a big check to do so, I’m not going to say no, but that’s not my main focus today. Things change. Think about how much things have changed in four years. So look ahead four years and say ‘wow.’ You just have to be flexible enough and be ready to pivot and adjust no matter what. You can only fundraise for so many things and NIL is No. 1, period. Get players, or it will be someone else’s facility soon. […] Everything you need to perform at the highest level is in the facility. What we don’t have is the high ceilings and the wow factor for recruiting. Quite honestly, our thing isn’t about the wow factor. Our thing is about the connection and relationship and what we’re going to do for the players if they choose to come to Rutgers. Eventually, do we have to get a new building yet? We do, but right now, that isn’t my focus.” (link)

“We’re in the fight. We’re going to max out everything that we’re legally going to be allowed to max out.” That’s USF Football HC Alex Golesh from AAC media days on outcomes of a potential House settlement. On the support for the program, Golesh: “I think the resources that our administration has been willing to pour in — which was a huge reason why I took the job — you look at it. It’s probably not publicized enough, but being fully funded in the sense of Alston (educational) award money, cost of attendance, certainly nutrition. We’ve spent more money on feeding our guys in the last year than we did in the five years prior combined.” On NIL changes for the Bulls: “We’ve moved Andrew Warsaw into the general manager role of the NIL portion on the university side. Fowler Avenue’s still the collective that we work with. But we can now control it in-house, so therefore Andrew Warsaw has moved into that role. He still is the chief of staff for football but is overseeing it for the university now and essentially has assembled a team under him to help with the day to day, and then obviously there’s a non-revenue sport component to it as well.” (link)
