ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “College sports leaders are targeting the end of the week to finalize the terms of the long form agreement of the House Settlement, sources tell ESPN. The expected target remains a roster limit of 105 football and 34 for baseball. From this expected step the settlement will proceed through the judicial approval process. There’s a few steps left, sources caution, but there’s optimism for the end of the week.” (link)
|
Meanwhile, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes how Houston Christian’s pushback on the House Settlement could impact the industry: “If HCU is successful here and is able to intervene in the case, I expect we'll see other non-P4 schools do the same. That could really put the proposed House settlement on shaky ground.” (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips as he sat down with Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger yesterday in Charlotte: “We are not chasing third. By any metric of significance — CFP appearances, national championships, having our own network, revenue generation, academic prowess — I’m comfortable where the ACC is: inside that top three.” Phillips also notes the league is in “positive and productive” discussions with ESPN about the network’s opt-in date in 2027 to extend a partnership through 2036. The contract for new UMBC AD Tiffany Tucker is a four-year deal with base pay of $350K, along with various academic & athletic achievement bonus opportunities. Buyout/payout wise, the party who chooses to exit the agreement before its first anniversary would owe 100% of the annual base salary, a figure that decreases by 25% each subsequent year. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens says the Ducks will incur increased travel expenses of less than $4M with the move to the Big Ten, which is part of FY25’s $162.5M budget (up from $145M in FY24). Mullens on the budget: “I know 17 (million) looks like a lot, but when you look across, what are some special added expenses (in the Big Ten)? There aren’t many. That travel piece will be one part of it, but the rest of it is just kind of customary operational increases.” Mullens on House: “There’s still some huge questions that remain around that settlement. Obviously, we’re building multiple plans based on how those questions get answered. … It’s a whole new frontier.” (link)

Another round of comments from inside the Men’s Basketball ecosystem on the state of transfers, tampering, NIL & more from The Athletic’s CJ Moore, Kyle Tucker & Brendan Marks. Of note, from an unnamed “high major coach”: “Every one of my players except for the ones who went pro were tampered with during the year. Every one — by Christmas.” An unnamed “high major player”: “If I wasn’t playing very much, or had a DNP, certain coaches would text my AAU coach or my dad and just try to get a temperature on what we were thinking because they can’t reach me. … Halfway through the season (around the new year) was really the first time some coaches started to reach out. My dad and my AAU coach would tell me if anyone texted them — which was really a lot. I’d say like minimum 20 people.” An unnamed agent: “There’s this narrative that agents are shopping players during the season; I personally have never done that. Have I gotten calls from other coaches saying, ‘Hey, who’s going to be in the portal? Is this guy going in? What about that guy? Or that guy?’ Absolutely. And then when coaches don’t get the answer they want, they run and cry that agents are making crazy demands or that agents are tampering. All the cases I personally have dealt with have been the coaches coming to us and tampering.” Lots more. (link)

With changes for the sport on the horizon, D1Baseball’s Mike Rooney dives into an analysis of parity, starting with noting that since the pandemic only three conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 12) have been represented in the College World Series compared to 10 leagues in the same time frame for the Men’s Basketball Final Four. By that measure: “Gulp.” Rooney continues: “Why does parity matter? The simple answer is that we need and want to grow our sport nationally. The SEC represents just eleven of the 50 US states. If all of the interest in our sport is concentrated in that region alone, we have a problem.” In conclusion: “And regarding parity, the Evansville Purple Aces just asked us to hold their beers. Three seeds West Virginia, Connecticut, and Oregon won regionals. And let’s not forget the scares that Western Michigan, Long Island, Wofford, Army, and High Point put into their heavily favored brethren during regionals. I would argue that college baseball has never been more fun. The SEC’s recent domination of Omaha has heightened the visibility of college baseball. That is a very good thing. As the world of college athletics continues to reinvent itself, my hope is that our sport finds a healthy level. Because it’s been one heck of an awesome ride to this point.“ Long, interesting read, which includes a focus on player acquisition & postseason access. (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney is ready to take advantage of the new policy that allows unlimited coaches providing on-field instruction during games. The Tigers on Monday revealed 20 staff designations for its coaching support staff. Swinney: “It allows us to really use our resources very efficiently. To be able to develop your team, especially your young guys, redshirts, freshmen, I just think you've got a lot more hands on deck, a lot more eyes, a lot more opportunity to be efficient with drills, scout teams, special teams — all across the board.” Check out the full list of names and roles, which includes former Clemson QB Tajh Boyd as offensive analyst/assistant QB coach. North Florida AD Nick Morrow is optimistic about the potential future of college athletics: “If you’re gonna put roster limits on a lot of sports moving forward, there’s probably going to be more parity across sports now. So those four or five stars may have to go somewhere else because there’s no more roster spots available for them. … How will we jump on this and take advantage of it so that we can be ahead of our competition?” How will the Ospreys stay in the mix? Morrow: “[I] always want all of our teams to make it to the conference tournament to have a chance to compete for a championship which we didn’t accomplish across the board. … We’re the second lowest budget in the ASUN conference right now. It’s tough to go out there and win championships across the board if we’re not resourcing at the same level. … We’re trying to build up the resources. How can we position ourselves so we can get the most out of every one of our 19 teams.” A bit more. (link)

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd profiles SMU billionaire alum/EnCap Investments Founder David Miller, who played an integral part in the Mustangs’ move to the ACC. Dodd: “Miller has been on the board of trustees for 16 years. Two years ago, he became board chair. That's when the course of the 113-year-old university changed. Sensing the future and having the resources, Miller helped form what was called the Power Conference Task Force with a core of about 15 trustees. Beginning in Spring 2022, the push was on. Miller took his eight-passenger Challenger 300 private plane and began touring the country like a candidate running for office. … The initiative was very much like a campaign. SMU president Gerald Turner chatted up his CEO peers in other conferences. Athletic director Rick Hart did the same with his peers. It was Miller who could hit the real influencers -- those big-cigar boosters who controlled the giving and purse strings at other schools. It helped open doors that endowments at those other institutions may have been investing in EnCap. The stakes were obvious for a school that had played in four conferences since the death penalty. Basically, what was on the table was SMU's relevancy 37 years later.” Miller to Dodd: “There's been a lot written about how we gave up $30 million [per year] for nine years. I will tell you it's hard to take the position that you gave up something that you didn't have and furthermore -- this is key -- that we were never going to get. … I don't think we have any assurance. I suspect you share this [view that realignment] isn't over. There's going to be reshuffling, [but] I'd much rather be on the inside looking out than the outside looking in. Now we just need to demonstrate to the world, fundamentally, that we deserve to be in." Of note, SMU has raised $125M of the $270M needed to fund its athletic program for the next nine years in the ACC. Lots more. (link)

Lehigh raised a record $3,652,005 during FY24, a 28% increase from the previous year. Other highlights include a 32% YOY increase in fundraising for women’s sports, a 15% YOY bump in men’s sports contributions, 18% YOY increase in total restricted dollars and 13 varsity sports reached all-time highs for dollars raised. Charlotte Chatter…
+ ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips hit the stage to tee up the league’s Football Kickoff event. Of note on the Florida State & Clemson lawsuits: “Forceful moments deserve forceful support and leadership. I don't know that I've changed at all other than I stand by everything I've said from the moment on the first interview I did around the Orange Bowl on ACCN to today. This is a really important time for the conference. Either you believe in what has been signed or you don't. We are going to do everything we can to protect and to fight the league because I see a group of student-athletes there. We now have 12,200 student-athletes. This has been a league that started way before me, 71 years ago, and it will be a league that will be around a long time after I depart. This league deserves us to take this really serious issue and to handle it appropriately. [...] This conference is bigger than any one school, or schools. [...] We've had six months of disruption. I think we've handled it incredibly well. So I think it's important for me to lead our group in particular, not only our staff but more importantly our schools, to compartmentalize the legal piece of what's happening and not let it distract us or take us away from what we're all trying to do. That is to provide great experiences for our student-athletes, teams, coaches, put the focus back on the fields and areas of competition.” On the potential House settlement: “The NCAA, I give our new president Charlie Baker a lot of credit. He's trying to take the most of it on. [...] But you're seeing some clear separation. I think there will be choices to be made. That's what we're working through right now with this proposed settlement. There's so many steps that affect the long-term future, but you don't know what the future is going to be until you start to get into it.” More in the full transcript of Phillips’ Q&A today. (link)
+ Prior to the Q&A portion of Phillips’ stage time, he also delivered prepared remarks, including details on the league’s success initiative that could generate a member $20 to $25 million more via football & men’s hoops performance than a standard slice of revenues, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel. (link)
+ 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello & John Talty write on opportunities for the ACC to potentially bolster its public brand as former Boston College Football HC Tom O’Brien offers an example: “I wouldn't say (SEC Network’s) Paul (Finebaum) is a nice guy, I've been on the wrong end of Paul's commentary before but that's what makes him who he is. He's not afraid to criticize and he's not afraid to praise when it's due. That's what the ACC needs. We don't need a guy or a woman who is going to praise us all the time, we need somebody like Paul who stirs the pot. [...] I don't know if there is another Paul Finebaum out there. Probably not. But we've got to find somebody.” Marcello & Talty: “The desire for the ACC's version of Finebaum to generate fan interest in ACC football was a frequent refrain from coaches and administrators at the conference's recent business meetings in Amelia Island, Florida. In evaluating why Florida State didn't make the four-team playoff, amidst other issues, coaches believed the conference had a perception problem. The ACC was 6-4 against the SEC in the regular season. The conference was better than it was given credit for, they argued, believing poor marketing and branding was hurting its public reputation. [...] Phillips recognizes the need for a face and voice for the network and has explored a needle-moving, ACC-centric personality, informally gauging the interest of multiple media personalities, according to sources. (An ESPN spokesperson said "We're constantly evaluating programming opportunities that align with the network's strategy and vision.")” (link)
+ Meanwhile, a “senior TV source” tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “You have all these private equity companies circling college sports. I think that is going to be a factor in the Big 12, maybe some of the other smaller conferences. I don’t know at the moment how the Big Ten and SEC are going to react to it, but I do see the potential of further destabilization.” (link)

The Big Sky inks a new media rights extension with ESPN that includes “a healthy rights fee increase, but also increases our linear exposures to four Big Sky games per season starting in 2025,” per Commissioner Tom Wistrcill. On industry challenges: “It’s a turbulent time in college athletics — we are not big fans of the House settlement in regard to how the costs are being assessed to conferences like ours. That said: We can still be leaders, we can still compete for national championships. We’re not going to chase the almighty dollar and we can be what college athletics was meant to be. As far as the Johnson case, I don’t believe our student-athletes should be employees, and it’s not what the athletes I talk to want.” Also of note from Wistrcill, $80M was bet on Big Sky football games as it continues its partnership with IC-360 and the league is teaming up with GameStrat for in-game sideline technology. Southland Commissioner Chris Grant chats with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention about the changes within the SLC and its future. “To get here took some tough conversations and a lot of transparent stuff that I wasn’t responsible for, but I had to take it on. The credit goes to our membership – the ones that stuck in there remained loyal and allowed me to go to work. It started with the rebrand, and my team has done a phenomenal job of bringing our brand to life and making sure we became more organized in the sense that we’re doing things the fundamental way a conference office should. We’re amplifying efforts of our membership.” The meeting at the high school coaches association was intentional by Grant, who says: “It’s important for us to be here in the sense that Texas is home, and we haven't celebrated Texas enough. We celebrate Louisiana a heck of a lot, and we’re not going to stop doing that. […] We’ve been accomplishing so much on campus, but it’s been hidden. It’s been bottled up. Now it’s time to take it to market.” On future growth, Grant states: “We want to expand, and we want to go to divisions. We have 12 valuable members, but if we can make our resources go further by creating more regional matchups and rivalries while selling more tickets at the gate, then we want to do it because that’s the ultimate goal. But it has to be a good fit, and what I care about are the scheduling opportunities to create regional rivalries. If they decide one day the Southland is a destination they want to be in, then we need to have that conversation.” (link)

USC AD Jennifer Cohen says the Trojans will be fully invested in revenue-sharing and are “well positioned to manage the landscape change,” while acknowledging there is still “work to do.” Further: “You have to stay big-picture in your thinking. We can’t hold on to things that don’t exist anymore. We have to do business differently, and we have to support students and coaches and athletic programs and universities differently.” Cohen states all revenue opportunities will be “on the table before we draw any lines,” adding: “All athletic directors are thinking 24/7 about revenue generation. Since I’ve been an AD, every day, every year, you’re challenged with finding more and new resources. The good news for us at USC is we have significant upside and unlimited potential to continue to monetize our athletic program, so we’ve got to roll up our sleeves.” (link)

New Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy will receive $410K per year through July 2029, with $360K coming from Fresno State and $50K from its athletic corporation. If he is let go without cause after three years and before the final year, he will be owed $200K. Also of note, the contract states “The University and the Athletic Corporation agree to not exercise or impose any non-retention efforts during the first three years of the contract term,” unless for cause. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini updates on the Pac-2’s future optionality - or potential lack thereof - as the Mountain West also strategically eyes the future: “Big picture, Oregon State and Washington State want to buy as much time as possible and see what happens elsewhere — perhaps, say, if Florida State and Clemson try to officially leave the ACC, that league might explore getting back to 17 members. Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes told The Athletic earlier this year that joining a Power 4 conference is the top priority, followed by some merger with the Mountain West. [...] What does hang over the Mountain West is its television deal, which recently added TNT Sports as a third partner and runs through 2025-26. That coincidentally times up with the Pac-2’s window. It’d be an easy moment to make an addition. But what about departures? The Mountain West office has maintained that its exit fee ($18 million, or $36 million for schools leaving within a year) applies regardless of the TV situation, something that was brought up last summer when San Diego State danced with the idea of leaving the league. Any attempt by Oregon State and Washington State to pull Group of 5 teams from multiple conferences would be very expensive, even with a $255 million war chest leftover from the Pac-12.” (link)
