She brings a wealth of experience and a steadfast passion for the success of Wright State Athletics and its student-athletes.” (link)

American Commissioner Tim Pernetti kicked-off the league’s preseason football event: “When I was chosen to succeed Mike (Aresco), Ralph Russo from the AP asked me why I wanted to return to college athletics when many were looking to get out… easy to answer. Investment. My experience as a football student-athlete changed my life. It provided me with a great education, incredible football memories, lasting friendships, and invaluable life-skills. 30 years later, collegiate athletics continues to be a formula that paves the way for our future teachers, entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders. It is a model worth modernizing…and investing in. [...] Invest in our brand, our business… and our people. And no, this is not our pitch to private capital – it’s our why. [...] During the 2023 season, the American had approximately 2.5 million fans that attended our football games…the most of our peer group. Our brand was also the most talked about in comparison to our peers, dominating the conversation at 33%. [...] We are going to maximize the American brand by creating original content that goes beyond gameday and establishes a year-round conversation and engagement between our student-athletes and fans and supporters. [...] It is also the time to invest in the collegiate athletics model…and new business and enterprise strategies. [...] Whether it's a private capital group, a creative corporate partner looking to break new ground, they see what we know, college athletics has failed to modernize the enterprise until it was faced with a crisis. [...] But…they also see that it is overflowing with committed leadership who is mission-driven. [...] If collegiate athletics is in such bad shape, do you really think we would be experiencing such accelerated growth, and outside entities would want to invest in us? The fact is, it’s an enterprise worth investing in. The intangibles are unmatched. It fuels passion, loyalty, celebrates resilience, builds character, and most importantly… provides educational opportunities. Despite the unknowns…at the American…we are going to jump the curve.” Lots more. (link)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti hit the stage in Indianapolis: “Look, we're focused on the 18 right now. That's what we're focused on. We had to do a lot of work. A lot of work had been done to integrate USC, UCLA. We started that work over immediately when we added Oregon and Washington. I think we're really comfortable where we are. We've got to get this conference right, and that's what our focus is. [...] If you look at our footprint on Saturday, having the three broadcast partners supported by the cable presence and Big Ten Network, I think Friday is an opportunity for national exposure. I think you're going to see some programs there really embrace the opportunity to play on Friday. [...] There's a lot to unpack in the House settlement. We expect it to be filed hopefully this week and then go through the process with Judge Wilken to get it to a final position sometime, we're hoping, in the next several months. That new model is going to require a lot of changes in terms of how we operate. We now have a situation where schools can provide benefits directly to student-athletes. There's a cap on that system. We have to monitor what schools are spending, so you need a reporting system there that doesn't exist. We need a process to evaluate true NIL deals. We want student-athletes to be able to take advantage of their name and likeness. We need to make sure that's what's really happening. Look, the role of third parties to the extent that third parties can connect student-athletes to real NIL opportunities, that's a great thing. I think that's the priority. [...] But a lot of decisions will be made locally. This system is built to allow institutions to make individual decisions about what programs they want to support, how much they want to invest, what student-athletes get what, how many scholarships they offer, because we're eliminating scholarship limits. All of those decisions will be made institution by institution, and I think that's the right way to do it.” Lots more. (link); Of additional note, the league announced its Football title game will stay in Indy through 2028. (link)

Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain chats with the Hattiesburg American’s Sam Sklar about revenue sharing, facility upgrades and more. On the Golden Eagles’ approach to revenue sharing: “I think it's too early and so in my mind it's more of just kind of the mindset of let's make sure we're doing everything we can to maximize fundraising, to put ourselves in the right position financially to prepare to make some adjustments in scholarships if that's what comes through.” The $35M renovation to Reed Green Coliseum is still on track to be completed in 2027, while the new golf facility is set to open September 1. Penn State signs a decade-long deal with Oak View Group to become the Nittany Lions’ first food and beverage partner. PSU Deputy AD for Internal Operations Vinnie James: “One of the strengths of our football experience is the volume of people who come to our games, and we don’t take that for granted. That’s what led us to want to outsource to professionals in the space. The fan experience was paramount in this decision-making.” (link)

Maryland introduces a new ticket pricing model for football and men’s basketball that transitions to a per seat contribution beginning with the 2025-26 seasons. As part of that transition, the Terrapin Club will shift to an all-in giving model combining all Maryland Athletics gifts into a single contribution total which will be utilized to determine a donor’s member level. Football and Men’s Basketball season-ticket holders, in alignment with a 2025 seat adjustment, will then be able to select the options that work best for them as part of the new structure utilizing an updated Terpoint priority system to determine the order of selection for tickets and parking. Additionally, as part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade and modernize the fan experience, The Maryland Club will be opening at XFINITY Center this fall, offering an exclusive bar, dining, lounge and gameday experience, while 17,000 lower-bowl seats at SECU Stadium will be widened by 20% for the fall of 2025. AD Damon Evans: "As we continue to invest in the championship resources needed to win at the highest levels, it is important that we reimagine the fan experience from all angles while keeping pace and evolving with the rest of our peers in the Big Ten and nationally. By advancing these plans, we aim to empower our current season ticket holders while welcoming a new generation of fans to join us at SECU Stadium and XFINITY Center for an even better and more enjoyable experience." Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano says the Scarlet Knights’ indoor practice facility project has “taken a backseat” to NIL efforts. “If somebody wants to step up and stroke a big check to do so, I’m not going to say no, but that’s not my main focus today. Things change. Think about how much things have changed in four years. So look ahead four years and say ‘wow.’ You just have to be flexible enough and be ready to pivot and adjust no matter what. You can only fundraise for so many things and NIL is No. 1, period. Get players, or it will be someone else’s facility soon. […] Everything you need to perform at the highest level is in the facility. What we don’t have is the high ceilings and the wow factor for recruiting. Quite honestly, our thing isn’t about the wow factor. Our thing is about the connection and relationship and what we’re going to do for the players if they choose to come to Rutgers. Eventually, do we have to get a new building yet? We do, but right now, that isn’t my focus.” (link)

“We’re in the fight. We’re going to max out everything that we’re legally going to be allowed to max out.” That’s USF Football HC Alex Golesh from AAC media days on outcomes of a potential House settlement. On the support for the program, Golesh: “I think the resources that our administration has been willing to pour in — which was a huge reason why I took the job — you look at it. It’s probably not publicized enough, but being fully funded in the sense of Alston (educational) award money, cost of attendance, certainly nutrition. We’ve spent more money on feeding our guys in the last year than we did in the five years prior combined.” On NIL changes for the Bulls: “We’ve moved Andrew Warsaw into the general manager role of the NIL portion on the university side. Fowler Avenue’s still the collective that we work with. But we can now control it in-house, so therefore Andrew Warsaw has moved into that role. He still is the chief of staff for football but is overseeing it for the university now and essentially has assembled a team under him to help with the day to day, and then obviously there’s a non-revenue sport component to it as well.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “College sports leaders are targeting the end of the week to finalize the terms of the long form agreement of the House Settlement, sources tell ESPN. The expected target remains a roster limit of 105 football and 34 for baseball. From this expected step the settlement will proceed through the judicial approval process. There’s a few steps left, sources caution, but there’s optimism for the end of the week.” (link)

Meanwhile, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes how Houston Christian’s pushback on the House Settlement could impact the industry: “If HCU is successful here and is able to intervene in the case, I expect we'll see other non-P4 schools do the same. That could really put the proposed House settlement on shaky ground.” (link)

More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips as he sat down with Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger yesterday in Charlotte: “We are not chasing third. By any metric of significance — CFP appearances, national championships, having our own network, revenue generation, academic prowess — I’m comfortable where the ACC is: inside that top three.” Phillips also notes the league is in “positive and productive” discussions with ESPN about the network’s opt-in date in 2027 to extend a partnership through 2036. The contract for new UMBC AD Tiffany Tucker is a four-year deal with base pay of $350K, along with various academic & athletic achievement bonus opportunities. Buyout/payout wise, the party who chooses to exit the agreement before its first anniversary would owe 100% of the annual base salary, a figure that decreases by 25% each subsequent year. Oregon AD Rob Mullens says the Ducks will incur increased travel expenses of less than $4M with the move to the Big Ten, which is part of FY25’s $162.5M budget (up from $145M in FY24). Mullens on the budget: “I know 17 (million) looks like a lot, but when you look across, what are some special added expenses (in the Big Ten)? There aren’t many. That travel piece will be one part of it, but the rest of it is just kind of customary operational increases.” Mullens on House: “There’s still some huge questions that remain around that settlement. Obviously, we’re building multiple plans based on how those questions get answered. … It’s a whole new frontier.” (link)

Another round of comments from inside the Men’s Basketball ecosystem on the state of transfers, tampering, NIL & more from The Athletic’s CJ Moore, Kyle Tucker & Brendan Marks. Of note, from an unnamed “high major coach”: “Every one of my players except for the ones who went pro were tampered with during the year. Every one — by Christmas.” An unnamed “high major player”: “If I wasn’t playing very much, or had a DNP, certain coaches would text my AAU coach or my dad and just try to get a temperature on what we were thinking because they can’t reach me. … Halfway through the season (around the new year) was really the first time some coaches started to reach out. My dad and my AAU coach would tell me if anyone texted them — which was really a lot. I’d say like minimum 20 people.” An unnamed agent: “There’s this narrative that agents are shopping players during the season; I personally have never done that. Have I gotten calls from other coaches saying, ‘Hey, who’s going to be in the portal? Is this guy going in? What about that guy? Or that guy?’ Absolutely. And then when coaches don’t get the answer they want, they run and cry that agents are making crazy demands or that agents are tampering. All the cases I personally have dealt with have been the coaches coming to us and tampering.” Lots more. (link)

With changes for the sport on the horizon, D1Baseball’s Mike Rooney dives into an analysis of parity, starting with noting that since the pandemic only three conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 12) have been represented in the College World Series compared to 10 leagues in the same time frame for the Men’s Basketball Final Four. By that measure: “Gulp.” Rooney continues: “Why does parity matter? The simple answer is that we need and want to grow our sport nationally. The SEC represents just eleven of the 50 US states. If all of the interest in our sport is concentrated in that region alone, we have a problem.” In conclusion: “And regarding parity, the Evansville Purple Aces just asked us to hold their beers. Three seeds West Virginia, Connecticut, and Oregon won regionals. And let’s not forget the scares that Western Michigan, Long Island, Wofford, Army, and High Point put into their heavily favored brethren during regionals. I would argue that college baseball has never been more fun. The SEC’s recent domination of Omaha has heightened the visibility of college baseball. That is a very good thing. As the world of college athletics continues to reinvent itself, my hope is that our sport finds a healthy level. Because it’s been one heck of an awesome ride to this point.“ Long, interesting read, which includes a focus on player acquisition & postseason access. (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney is ready to take advantage of the new policy that allows unlimited coaches providing on-field instruction during games. The Tigers on Monday revealed 20 staff designations for its coaching support staff. Swinney: “It allows us to really use our resources very efficiently. To be able to develop your team, especially your young guys, redshirts, freshmen, I just think you've got a lot more hands on deck, a lot more eyes, a lot more opportunity to be efficient with drills, scout teams, special teams — all across the board.” Check out the full list of names and roles, which includes former Clemson QB Tajh Boyd as offensive analyst/assistant QB coach. North Florida AD Nick Morrow is optimistic about the potential future of college athletics: “If you’re gonna put roster limits on a lot of sports moving forward, there’s probably going to be more parity across sports now. So those four or five stars may have to go somewhere else because there’s no more roster spots available for them. … How will we jump on this and take advantage of it so that we can be ahead of our competition?” How will the Ospreys stay in the mix? Morrow: “[I] always want all of our teams to make it to the conference tournament to have a chance to compete for a championship which we didn’t accomplish across the board. … We’re the second lowest budget in the ASUN conference right now. It’s tough to go out there and win championships across the board if we’re not resourcing at the same level. … We’re trying to build up the resources. How can we position ourselves so we can get the most out of every one of our 19 teams.” A bit more. (link)

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd profiles SMU billionaire alum/EnCap Investments Founder David Miller, who played an integral part in the Mustangs’ move to the ACC. Dodd: “Miller has been on the board of trustees for 16 years. Two years ago, he became board chair. That's when the course of the 113-year-old university changed. Sensing the future and having the resources, Miller helped form what was called the Power Conference Task Force with a core of about 15 trustees. Beginning in Spring 2022, the push was on. Miller took his eight-passenger Challenger 300 private plane and began touring the country like a candidate running for office. … The initiative was very much like a campaign. SMU president Gerald Turner chatted up his CEO peers in other conferences. Athletic director Rick Hart did the same with his peers. It was Miller who could hit the real influencers -- those big-cigar boosters who controlled the giving and purse strings at other schools. It helped open doors that endowments at those other institutions may have been investing in EnCap. The stakes were obvious for a school that had played in four conferences since the death penalty. Basically, what was on the table was SMU's relevancy 37 years later.” Miller to Dodd: “There's been a lot written about how we gave up $30 million [per year] for nine years. I will tell you it's hard to take the position that you gave up something that you didn't have and furthermore -- this is key -- that we were never going to get. … I don't think we have any assurance. I suspect you share this [view that realignment] isn't over. There's going to be reshuffling, [but] I'd much rather be on the inside looking out than the outside looking in. Now we just need to demonstrate to the world, fundamentally, that we deserve to be in." Of note, SMU has raised $125M of the $270M needed to fund its athletic program for the next nine years in the ACC. Lots more. (link)

Lehigh raised a record $3,652,005 during FY24, a 28% increase from the previous year. Other highlights include a 32% YOY increase in fundraising for women’s sports, a 15% YOY bump in men’s sports contributions, 18% YOY increase in total restricted dollars and 13 varsity sports reached all-time highs for dollars raised.
