You can cross Oliver Luck’s name off the list of Houston athletic director candidates as the former West Virginia AD/current Altius Sports Partners Chairman texted PaperCity this week: “As much as I admire the work that Pres. Khator and Chair Fertitta have done at UH, I am not a candidate to replace Chris.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips on the Ovies & Giglio Show: “We’ve had a really good run in basketball. Maybe not as strong in the number of teams in the tournament the last several years, but nobody’s done more with less bids. I think highly of the Big Ten, I came from the Big Ten, they haven’t won a basketball championship since 2000. [...] At times, we don’t get the benefit of the doubt. [...] We’ve got really good players, really good coaches and really good teams, starting with football. We’ve won a lot of championships in Olympic sports, but for anyone to say we’re not a top two or three conference in football, they’re not paying attention. To say we’re not a top one or two or three conference in basketball, they’re not paying attention.” Lots more. (link)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti detailed some thoughts on the College Football Playoff with The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman. On potential expansion of the event: “I really am open-minded about seeing and making sure this works. Let’s see what happens this year. Let’s see the impact on the regular season. Let’s see what the Big Ten does on the field, in the committee room and all of that. I think that’s where I am. Whether it’s 12 or 14, we’ll see. But I focus on the fact that we’re really deep. We’re 18 (teams) deep.” On regular season dynamics: “We want to incentivize our schools to play great non-conference schedules. That’s a really important fabric of college football. We want to make sure that whatever postseason system we have is encouraging those types of matchups.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork points to executing four head coaching searches since the end of hoops season as a fast track to learning the intricacies of the university: “...in this case I could just ask Gene (Smith). It allowed me to accelerate that learning curve, versus, ‘Hey can you describe how this works’ and I take notes. Instead, I got to live it out. Nobody wants to go through coaching changes — it’s people’s lives — but the fact it happened and it happened in the overlap, it allowed me to see this is how the systems work and that these are the procedures.” Bjork also notes the value of the lengthy transition from Texas A&M to Ohio State: “If my family would’ve been moving, maybe that would’ve been a little more logistically there, but the fact that I was there by myself allowed me to clear the deck and I didn’t have to worry about the day-to-day operations — I could focus on learning and the big picture.” (link)

The Collective Association (TCA), which spent $80K on Congressional lobbying expenses in both Q1 and Q2 of this year, plans to raise fees for many of its members in early 2025, with the hope of increasing lobbying efforts in Washington. Currently, TCA charges a flat membership fee of $6K but that will likely go up for Power Four conference collectives. Also notable from Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “The group’s original ambition, (TCA President Russell) White said, was to include the 70 dedicated collectives of each Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 school. But he conceded that some members among this cohort have since made it clear they aren’t interested in joining, ‘for whatever reasons.’ In light of that, TCA is now targeting a membership of 70 or so collectives that include those from the non-Power Four realm.” (link)

More from Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning on NIL, this time on The Pat McAfee Show: “I really don’t care what people think. I just want to win; I know the reality of what our situation is here. There’s not a top-10 program in the nation that’s not funded and in a good position to compete, or they wouldn’t be a top-10 program. [...] When somebody doesn’t win in recruiting, it’s easy to throw out an excuse that doesn’t really fit their narrative. And I think it’s easy to say the low-hanging fruit is, ‘Well it didn’t work out for us, they must have beat me because of this.’” (link)

Washington Football HC Jedd Fisch at Big Ten media days this week touched on some of the facilities upgrades in Seattle: “We’ve redone our entire weight room, start to finish. Every aspect of the weight room will be brand new, on Aug. 9, it’ll open up — maybe Aug. 14. We’ll have a big, grand reveal. Right now it’s blacked out, all the windows are covered. So the kids haven’t seen anything, or we hope that they haven’t. We’ve redone every position room. We have the second-oldest facility in the Big Ten, so we had to upgrade it. We did all the coaches’ offices, all the meeting rooms, team room. We’re building a players’ lounge. We’re building a recovery lounge. We’re building a barber shop. We’re redoing the locker room. So we had a substantial investment in our facilities, and I think that’s critical for us to keep up. You can have one of the three best facilities in the Pac-12, and all of a sudden have the 17th facility in the Big Ten. When you recruit against Ohio State and Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and you see the commitment they’re putting toward their facilities — USC is building a brand new facility right now, Oregon’s facility as we all know it, Michigan’s building a brand new facility, renovation — we had to step up and do the same.” (link)

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) has finalized the 10-team playoff model the conference will use starting in 2027 when St. Thomas begins NCHC play. All 10 teams will make the NCHC Tournament, with playoffs taking place over three weekends entirely on campus sites, which will first begin with the 2026 edition. Starting in 2027 and beyond, the top five seeds will host the bottom five seeds in the first round in a best-of-three series. The following weekend, the five remaining teams will be re-seeded and three games will take place. The two lowest remaining seeds (now seeds No. 4 and No. 5) will play a single-game quarterfinal on a Friday night at the site of the No. 1 seed. The next night, both semi finals will take place with the No. 1 seed hosting the winner of the quarterfinal game and the No. 2 seed playing the No. 3 seed. The championship game is the following weekend. More details on scheduling for the league. (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh inks a contract extension that would keep him with his alma mater through 2029. The deal starts at $1.45M base salary, up from his previous $1M, and includes $50K annual increases. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin: “Chris is an extremely effective leader at a time of unprecedented change across the collegiate athletics landscape. In the midst of this shift, he continues to position the Badgers for long-term success in the top tier of college sports. I’m thrilled he’ll continue to be a Badger and look forward to his leadership in the years to come.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann lines out potential next moves for Houston Christian in the House case: 1) “It could appeal Wilken’s denial to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. HCU could insist that Wilken’s rationales plainly value form over substance, in that regardless of NCAA rules and procedures, HCU had no actual ability to sway the litigation or settlement.”; 2) “HCU could also sue the NCAA in a Texas state court for breach of duty, breach of contract and similar state law claims that incorporate the arguments contained in its filings to Wilken.”; and/or, 3) “HCU could seek monetary damages from the NCAA for harms the settlement would cause to HCU students and seek a restraining order that bars the NCAA from enforcing the settlement in the jurisdiction. The case would be heard by a local judge and perhaps eventually a local jury sympathetic to the school and its predicament.” More key analysis from McCann. (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell gets a number of perspectives on what may and may not be in the long-form House settlement which will be submitted this week. On who will be responsible for third-party enforcement, Boise State (DI) Sports Law Professor Sam Ehrlich: “Are the parties really going to ask the court to oversee all of this? Judge Wilken is on senior status – and has been for the past ten years – is she going to be expected to oversee this when there’s a good chance she’s going to want to retire soon? If not, who? And if oversight isn’t going to be handled by a judge, who will? Kessler and Berman themselves?” Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale: “One thing that wasn’t in the term sheet much was athlete rights, athlete voice. And so it’s going to be really interesting to understand what the athletes' rights and the athletes’ voice are and how they will be exercised over these next 10 years. Because if it’s not in it enough, and there’s not a mechanism for the athletes to exercise their rights and their voice enough, that’s going to really be a reason you’re going to see more and more lawsuits. And [then] this is just a can-kick down the road.” Kennyhertz Perry Attorney Mit Winter believes “[Wilken will] scrutinize that language and the opt-out procedure very closely when deciding whether to approve the settlement, and she may not approve it if she views it as an attempt to bind non-class members to the settlement terms. I also think this is an area, along with the third-party NIL enforcement mechanism, that may see a lot of objections from class members and third parties.” (link)

Plaintiffs attorneys in the Fontenot case have filed an amendment as to why the case should not be incorporated into the House settlement. “(E)ven if that settlement is approved, it would simply usher in a new, artificially low cap that is far below the revenue sharing that a competitive market would yield. While it is an admission that amateurism is not needed, it also simply substitutes one illegal price fix for another.” Further, the Fontenot case would pursue the “full amount of compensation that these athletes truly deserve. […] And it therefore takes aim at the full cut of television and other revenues that the athletes would receive in a truly open market.” (link)

Texas spent $2.3M to put on its SEC entrance party, which brought 50K people to campus, with $1.07M paid by Learfield including $610K for Pitbull (aka Mr. 305) (aka Mr. Worldwide) and another artist. The Longhorns paid $889K for the festivities and $339K in advertising, which includes $52K for social media services to Paciolan, $35,500 for Times Square advertising and $20K in TV marketing. (link)

Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning fielded questions today in Indy about the Ducks’ perceived endless NIL coffers: “The reality is, find a top-10 team in college football right now that doesn't have great support. Do we have a lot more than everybody else? I think that'd be an exaggeration or we'd never lose. Everyone else right now is focused on our ice cream cone, and if I'm busy looking at theirs, that means mine's melting.” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney reacted to coming roster management changes: “You think you got transfers now? Wait till that number gets there. It's going to be a lot. [...] The crazy thing is, there's not many coaches that want 105 scholarships. We want to keep our walk-ons.” (link)

The Athletic’s CJ Moore, Kyle Tucker & Brendan Marks continue their series on the current fabric of Men’s Basketball, including NIL, transfer portal, tampering & more. Per an unnamed mid-major coach: “I was talking to a buddy of mine who in the last three years had seven kids from a mid-major go high-major. That’s what his sell is right now: ‘We’ve moved seven kids to the high-major level, and they’ve all made six figures.' You produce, and you move up and you make more money. You look at our level: It’s almost like the first-team, second-team all-league, that’s the recruiting list for these high-majors.” An anonymous high-major HC with advice for non-five-star prospects: “Is it about development, or is it about playing time? If it’s about playing time, then go lower. Bottom line. If it’s about development, then go to the place you feel believes in you and you have an opportunity to grow. But the reality is, I don’t care if it’s a four-star, five-star, it’s such a small percentage of players who are ready to make an immediate impact. So that to me is the way I would look at it.” Same topic from a low major HC: “If you want to make some real money, have an all-conference year, have a couple of great years back-to-back, get your team to the NCAA Tournament and go make $600,000 in the SEC. High school kids should not go for the most money now at a place they can’t play. Don’t chase some crazy figure at a place you can’t play because it’s gonna cost you money on the back end. Because if you don’t play, now all of a sudden your market value goes down.” Lots more. (link)

As USF rolls closer to breaking ground on its on-campus football stadium in October, the Bulls may reallocate some 5K square-feet intended for the locker room to the weight room as the roster limit will be lower than originally anticipated. HC Alex Golesh also found inspiration for the dining facility from Georgia, whose facility “looked more like a Chili’s than a cafeteria.” Golesh: “You get one shot to do it, and we all know where college football’s going. You’re not going to invest in facilities anymore. You’re investing in players, not facilities.” (link)
