George Washington is “set to hire” UIC AD Michael Lipitz to be its next AD, per CollegeAD. (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh inks a contract extension that would keep him with his alma mater through 2029. The deal starts at $1.45M base salary, up from his previous $1M, and includes $50K annual increases. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin: “Chris is an extremely effective leader at a time of unprecedented change across the collegiate athletics landscape. In the midst of this shift, he continues to position the Badgers for long-term success in the top tier of college sports. I’m thrilled he’ll continue to be a Badger and look forward to his leadership in the years to come.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann lines out potential next moves for Houston Christian in the House case: 1) “It could appeal Wilken’s denial to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. HCU could insist that Wilken’s rationales plainly value form over substance, in that regardless of NCAA rules and procedures, HCU had no actual ability to sway the litigation or settlement.”; 2) “HCU could also sue the NCAA in a Texas state court for breach of duty, breach of contract and similar state law claims that incorporate the arguments contained in its filings to Wilken.”; and/or, 3) “HCU could seek monetary damages from the NCAA for harms the settlement would cause to HCU students and seek a restraining order that bars the NCAA from enforcing the settlement in the jurisdiction. The case would be heard by a local judge and perhaps eventually a local jury sympathetic to the school and its predicament.” More key analysis from McCann. (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell gets a number of perspectives on what may and may not be in the long-form House settlement which will be submitted this week. On who will be responsible for third-party enforcement, Boise State (DI) Sports Law Professor Sam Ehrlich: “Are the parties really going to ask the court to oversee all of this? Judge Wilken is on senior status – and has been for the past ten years – is she going to be expected to oversee this when there’s a good chance she’s going to want to retire soon? If not, who? And if oversight isn’t going to be handled by a judge, who will? Kessler and Berman themselves?” Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale: “One thing that wasn’t in the term sheet much was athlete rights, athlete voice. And so it’s going to be really interesting to understand what the athletes' rights and the athletes’ voice are and how they will be exercised over these next 10 years. Because if it’s not in it enough, and there’s not a mechanism for the athletes to exercise their rights and their voice enough, that’s going to really be a reason you’re going to see more and more lawsuits. And [then] this is just a can-kick down the road.” Kennyhertz Perry Attorney Mit Winter believes “[Wilken will] scrutinize that language and the opt-out procedure very closely when deciding whether to approve the settlement, and she may not approve it if she views it as an attempt to bind non-class members to the settlement terms. I also think this is an area, along with the third-party NIL enforcement mechanism, that may see a lot of objections from class members and third parties.” (link)

Plaintiffs attorneys in the Fontenot case have filed an amendment as to why the case should not be incorporated into the House settlement. “(E)ven if that settlement is approved, it would simply usher in a new, artificially low cap that is far below the revenue sharing that a competitive market would yield. While it is an admission that amateurism is not needed, it also simply substitutes one illegal price fix for another.” Further, the Fontenot case would pursue the “full amount of compensation that these athletes truly deserve. […] And it therefore takes aim at the full cut of television and other revenues that the athletes would receive in a truly open market.” (link)

Texas spent $2.3M to put on its SEC entrance party, which brought 50K people to campus, with $1.07M paid by Learfield including $610K for Pitbull (aka Mr. 305) (aka Mr. Worldwide) and another artist. The Longhorns paid $889K for the festivities and $339K in advertising, which includes $52K for social media services to Paciolan, $35,500 for Times Square advertising and $20K in TV marketing. (link)

Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning fielded questions today in Indy about the Ducks’ perceived endless NIL coffers: “The reality is, find a top-10 team in college football right now that doesn't have great support. Do we have a lot more than everybody else? I think that'd be an exaggeration or we'd never lose. Everyone else right now is focused on our ice cream cone, and if I'm busy looking at theirs, that means mine's melting.” (link)
|
Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney reacted to coming roster management changes: “You think you got transfers now? Wait till that number gets there. It's going to be a lot. [...] The crazy thing is, there's not many coaches that want 105 scholarships. We want to keep our walk-ons.” (link)

Meanwhile, North Carolina boss Mack Brown with a zinger: “Every coach recruiting against us says I’m going to quit. And six of them have been fired that said that already. So they ought to be worried about themselves.” (link)

The Athletic’s CJ Moore, Kyle Tucker & Brendan Marks continue their series on the current fabric of Men’s Basketball, including NIL, transfer portal, tampering & more. Per an unnamed mid-major coach: “I was talking to a buddy of mine who in the last three years had seven kids from a mid-major go high-major. That’s what his sell is right now: ‘We’ve moved seven kids to the high-major level, and they’ve all made six figures.' You produce, and you move up and you make more money. You look at our level: It’s almost like the first-team, second-team all-league, that’s the recruiting list for these high-majors.” An anonymous high-major HC with advice for non-five-star prospects: “Is it about development, or is it about playing time? If it’s about playing time, then go lower. Bottom line. If it’s about development, then go to the place you feel believes in you and you have an opportunity to grow. But the reality is, I don’t care if it’s a four-star, five-star, it’s such a small percentage of players who are ready to make an immediate impact. So that to me is the way I would look at it.” Same topic from a low major HC: “If you want to make some real money, have an all-conference year, have a couple of great years back-to-back, get your team to the NCAA Tournament and go make $600,000 in the SEC. High school kids should not go for the most money now at a place they can’t play. Don’t chase some crazy figure at a place you can’t play because it’s gonna cost you money on the back end. Because if you don’t play, now all of a sudden your market value goes down.” Lots more. (link)

As USF rolls closer to breaking ground on its on-campus football stadium in October, the Bulls may reallocate some 5K square-feet intended for the locker room to the weight room as the roster limit will be lower than originally anticipated. HC Alex Golesh also found inspiration for the dining facility from Georgia, whose facility “looked more like a Chili’s than a cafeteria.” Golesh: “You get one shot to do it, and we all know where college football’s going. You’re not going to invest in facilities anymore. You’re investing in players, not facilities.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy adds to yesterday’s House settlement reporting: “As expected, the House settlement long-form remains on track to be filed Friday, attorney Jeffrey Kessler told @SBJ. Next steps would include Judge Wilken setting a hearing (likely September) to possibly grant preliminary approval. Final approval hearing could be early 2025.” (link)

The Athletic’s Seth Emerson writes on nuances of coming roster caps: “There could still be some wiggle room for teams. The roster limits for teams (football, baseball and otherwise) may apply only when the season begins, letting teams carry more players in the preseason and offseason, if they choose.” Emerson also gets this from an anonymous “power conference” administrator: “I think it will differ school by school — ultimately, everyone faces the same financial challenge with revenue vs. 20 million in revenue share, plus increased scholarships. From what I’ve heard, schools are going to be hesitant to immediately go up to new scholarship limits until the revenue share shakes out. Football might be an outlier (because of pressure from coaches and donors), but a lot of schools will not go up to scholarship limits right off the bat.” (link)
|
Speaking of revenue sharing, Iowa AD Beth Goetz shares what that could look like in Iowa City: “We are committed to competing at the highest level. A lot of work to do in the meantime, a lot of things to think through, but we’re committed to doing that and making sure our football program and all our teams continue to be successful.” Asked if the Hawkeyes will fully fund it, Goetz emphasized that the goal is to “make sure you have the resources available to compete. … In some ways, you’re sort of rebuilding this whole plane while you’re trying to fly it. … We want to understand where should we put our resources that it’s really going to help up win. And that’s when we’ll make a decision about what those numbers look like, where we put them and what adjustments we might have to make.” At present, Goetz notes there are no discussions about cutting sports. (link)

Despite an anticipated $4M drop in philanthropy and $2.3M dip in general income, Iowa projects $150.5M in revenue this year, in part, because “Ticket revenue for football is budgeted to increase due to a favorable home schedule and price adjustments,” per the school’s budget report to regents. Women’s Basketball, which brought in $1.3M last year in revenue, is expected to haul in $1.7M this year. The Hawkeyes project a $13.4M increase this year in athletic conference revenue to a record $75.2M, which is a 22% uptick over last year’s $61.8M distribution and more than 2.5 times the $30.7M conference distribution UI Athletics got a decade ago in 2015. The $50M COVID loan from the university still looms, with $6M repaid so far and $2.5M expected to be paid this year, leaving 83% of the loan still due, excluding interest. Meanwhile, Iowa State’s FY25 budget is projected to reach $114.2M, which is slightly above last year’s $111.5M budget but below FY24 actual income of nearly $117M. Northern Iowa projects a dip in total revenue for FY25, from $14.8M to $14.7M. More figures from the three schools. (link)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff announces the addition of women’s golf, which will hold its inaugural fall 2024-25 season. This marks the program's return to campus after a gap of 20+ years. AD Chris Robinson: “I am pleased to announce the inclusion of women's golf in the roster of women's sports for the 2024-25 academic year. We are excited to offer this opportunity for women to compete in collegiate level golf and are looking forward to establishing a strong and competitive program. Golf is a lifelong sport, and we have observed a growing number of girls and women engaging in regular play each year. I am confident that our new coach will offer an exceptional student-athlete experience for our golfers and build a program that brings pride to the University.” The Lions will soon initiate a search committee to find a head coach for the program. More reporting around the Stanford-to-Texas Tech transfer of Softball National Player of the Year NiJaree Canady pegs the NIL agreement at $1.2M with The Matador Club, per On3. Yesterday, outlets indicated the number was $1.05M. (link)

Interesting comments from USC Football HC Lincoln Riley during interviews in Indy: “We are playing catch up. We're playing catch up in facilities. We're playing catch up in NIL. We're playing catch up in resources within the program. We've been playing catch up in damn near every way you can think. [...] I would love to [keep playing Notre Dame]. I know it means a lot to a lot of people. The purist in you, no doubt. Now if you get in a position where you have to make a decision on what's best for SC to help us win a national championship vs. keeping that, shoot, then you got to look at it. And listen, we're not the first example of that. Look all the way across the country. There have been a lot of other teams sacrifice rivalry games.” (link)

New Mexico’s Lobo Club finished FY24 with a $9.7M haul, topping the previous record of $9.3M, set last year, and marking the fifth straight year of growth. That is good news for UNM, as the Lobos’ NIL collective, 505 Sports Venture Fund, has also grown. Last year 505SVF guaranteed contracts of $1.3M to Lobo athletes, but that number is $3.5M for the upcoming season. The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer notes “A big step in that process has been the formation of the Lobo Alliance under Lobo Club Executive Director Jalen Dominguez. The major gift giving society allows for one-time donations of at least $50,000 that can, with donor confidence, go to either the Lobo Club, NIL or both.” (link)

Extra Points guest author Rodger Sherman digs into what the NCAA’s support of Beach Volleyball means for the Olympic sport and Team USA, whose two women’s pairs are former college teammates. Prior to sponsoring the sport in 2016, LSU HC Russell Brock notes: “The first three or four seasons, we had a lot of athletes that were dual-surface players or even indoor players where we saw potential and said ‘hey, we think you’d make a great beach player.’ Now, the majority of players in our sport have played exclusively beach volleyball.” USC Beach HC Dain Blanton adds: “You knew that this pipeline would be absolutely incredible for the United States. You knew that before you could blink an eye, you’d look out at the field and see that every single one of the athletes on the women’s side would be graduates from prominent beach volleyball programs.” (link)

Packer and Durham Co-Host Mark Packer believes the ACC does need an equivalent of the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum and throws his hat in the ring. “In fact, I’ve actually said ‘Hey, you know what, I’d be more than happy to do that for you.’ Gone nowhere. That’s for other people to determine. That’s for ESPN and everybody else to figure out. I have been adamant behind the scenes saying I’m really interested in doing that. Quite frankly, I think I’m the only person on [ACC Network] who’s done a show every day… But that’s up for ESPN and the ACC Network suits and executives to figure out and it’s way above my pay grade.” (link)
