New Orleans AD Tim Duncan addresses the 25% budget reduction the athletic department will incur in 2024-25, noting it will result in a reduction of around $2M. Duncan cites UNO’s declining enrollment, the NCAA’s new Student-Athlete Core Guarantees and the House settlement as factors contributing to the budget cut and adds: “Over the past seven months, I have had multiple meetings with head coaches and senior staff members to strategically reduce the budget while trying to mitigate the impact on our student-athletes. Unfortunately, the reductions will affect personnel, operational dollars, travel expenses, and even athletic scholarships.” Duncan goes on to explain that “when looking to hire head coaches, we have intentionally searched for candidates with successful track records from smaller institutions with fewer resources than we have. We have been fortunate to find those gems. Their unique skill set is even more important today than when they were hired. … Moreover, with the inevitable transition of full-time personnel, we are working with financial aid and career services to find and hire talented students who may have an interest in gaining real world experience in event management, marketing, social media, compliance, and business operations.” (link)

Evansville AD Ziggy Siegfried sits down with Inside Indiana Business’ Mitzi Morris to discuss topics ranging from facilities to community engagement and says the Purple Aces are working to partner with a design company for renderings of the Kyle and Ashley Freeland Clubhouse. “Then we’ll start to work on where exactly the clubhouse is going to go. Right now, we believe that’s going to be down the first baseline. The clubhouse will include a nice locker room and coaches’ offices. We’re looking at some lounge space and a few other things that will go inside the facility. We’re trying to determine if it’s going to be one level or two levels, but it’ll end up being about a $3M to $3.5M project.” Siegfried also notes the athletic department is working with the university on enrollment management initiatives “to make sure that we are contributing positively to our enrollment goals on campus. When you look at student-athletes paying for tuition, housing, meals and stuff like that, we increased by a million dollars from the previous year. That’s an unheard-of number; we won’t be able to do that much increase probably ever again. But we put a structure in place that allowed us to do that because the majority of our student-athletes aren’t on scholarship, so they are paying for at least a portion of their tuition and other expenses.” Also from Siegfried: ”We put a huge emphasis on our ticket sales. It was right around $550K a few years ago. This year, we were at $900K. We increased specifically for men’s basketball. If you look at a few years ago, we only generated $38K individual game tickets for men’s basketball. This year, we did $170K. A lot of that was our team was winning, and we had some good marketing strategies.” Full Q&A. (link)

Ole Miss Senior Deputy AD for External Relations Eric Wood joins RebelGrove’s Chase Parham to discuss his move to Oxford, how his experience helps the Rebels in the SEC, football scheduling, the state of the industry and more. Wood says he approached his role as Louisiana Tech’s AD, as well as his post at Ole Miss, as if he were an alumnus. “You make decisions differently when you love the place. … So I really just tried to flip my mindset. What does that look like? That means I'm going to learn the alma mater, I'm going to learn the fight song early on. My kids are going to know it, and my wife's going to know it, and that, to me, that's how you start getting all in.” Wood also notes that “early on in the career you say well this stop might be three to five, this spot might be a two-year stop. … Now I've kind of checked the box that I've been an AD – and I’m not saying I would never want to do it again – but I'm like I'm invested. I want to know the history of this place. I want to know the legends of this place and I want to learn the fight song and the alma mater and you make decisions differently when you get that invested in it.” Wood also explains part of the reason he completed a terminal degree later in his career is because he rose through the ranks on the internal side, the “areas where you don’t become an athletics director generally speaking” and “who makes the hire for the athletics director? A chancellor, a president, depending on what system is, and I wanted them to see that as the leader of their athletic department I was going to care about the academic piece. I was going to care about the holistic development of a student.” Full podcast. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous webmaster Q&As with The CW President Dennis Miller, who says of the decision to broadcast Washington State and Oregon State games: “We went through a whole research analysis of Oregon State and Washington State. Then we looked at where our overlap is with stations and what we could accomplish, and some of the matchups that they were starting to talk about. So it just felt like, ‘Hey, this is a good fit.’ We’re moving in and we’re going to be able to take advantage of the momentum that they have.” With ACC games paired with Pac-12 games on Saturdays, Miller says the network hopes to “provide some habits and the ability to form some habits. … We’ll go anywhere from 3.5 to 14 hours of sports on Saturdays. We’re hoping that audiences will be able to know, ‘Hey, I can find my team, on this day, on a regular basis here,’ which we think helps with some of the consumer confusion that’s out there right now.” To continue building awareness for its college products, Miller explains that “we’ve got to take advantage of the social media followings of a lot of the athletes on these teams because that’s a big driver to finding sports today.” On the Pac-12 Enterprises production facility: “We’re building out the facility to be agnostic so we can cover the ACC, we can cover the Pac-12. Obviously, just given their history and the quality of the work, we’re hoping it can lead to other things. We’re talking to other rights holders all the time about what else is available. … I think with the teams and with the schools here, we’re going to just try to identify more product. Live sports and broadcasts have gone together well for a long time. I think the IP holders like the reach of it and the consistency there. So we’re hoping to do more with the Pac-12 going forward.” Full interview. (link)

On Location EVP for Collegiate/Anthony Travel Founder & CEO John Anthony tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that “we're going to have a sold-out stadium” for the Aer Lingus Classic between Florida State and Georgia Tech on August 24. “Of the 48,000 people in the stadium that day, 25,000 will be Americans. … It shows that Florida State and Georgia Tech fans have responded, and they're excited about it, and it also validates what we're building in Ireland with a following of American college football fans.” Portnoy notes this year’s iteration will receive the full ESPN College GameDay treatment, marking the first time the show has aired outside the U.S. Anthony explains: “When we first brought the idea of ‘College GameDay’ to [officials] in Ireland, not surprisingly, no one [there] had ever heard of it or knew what it was. We showed them videos. We sat down with ESPN and Irish officials together, and we showed them what the audiences had been, what the receptions have been, showed them the viewership numbers, and they're all-in. The Irish love a party. They may not know what College GameDay was before, but they will afterward, because they're going to show up.” (link)

In the first of a multi-part interview with A Sea of Red, Liberty AD Ian McCaw looks back on the Flames’ first season in Conference USA and says: “My short summary statement is we won and we learned. Certainly, football had an exceptional season to win 13 games, a conference championship, and going to the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Overall, we had 12 conference championships, which is a tremendous year, a lot of success. In some of the programs where maybe we didn’t realize our goals, I think we made adjustments to put ourselves in position to be competitive and compete for conference championships this upcoming coming year. … The competitive level and athleticism is a big step up from the ASUN in pretty much every sport. Overall, I think we adjusted pretty well from that standpoint. The travel is also very different in terms of both location and being more expensive. I believe we will be able to handle the logistics better in year two than we did in year one.” (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce President Mark Rudin has “confirmed with the chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and the chancellor that no vote will be taken on any rebranding of A&M-Commerce at this week's BOR meeting. I look forward to meeting with the BOR during this week’s executive session to discuss legal issues related to any potential name change to our university.” (link); Lions AD Jim Curry clarifies that any rebranding decisions are part of a conversation and says there is a “lot of misinformation out there right now. I think if I were to tell anybody where we are with that discussion is that it’s a very active listening exercise right now. Not to say that something couldn’t happen soon, and that decision may be that we're really happy with where we are right now. But I think a lot of options are on the table to include keeping the name the same. A&M-Dallas obviously has been a conversation. What I can tell you for sure is A&M-Dallas at Commerce, which is the name that was kind of floated initially, was never on the table, has never been on the table. … We don’t have enough space on the field to put all those letters on it.” Ultimately, Curry emphasizes that no decisions have been made and the discussions are taking into account “the university not just right now, but where we want to be 40 years from now.” More from Curry, including the progress being made on the $70M event center, which will serve as the home for the Lions’ court sports and other community events and for which ground could be broken as early as 2025. Several public universities in North Carolina, including ECU, Appalachian State, North Carolina Central, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, North Carolina A&T, UNC Asheville and UNC Wilmington, will split $10.7M in sports betting revenue from the state. According to WUNC’s Brianna Atkinson, ADs at the universities were expecting to receive around $300K for the first year of sports betting but will instead bring in roughly $820K each. The General Assembly estimates it will send over $26M in sports betting proceeds to the UNC System next year, which breaks down to $2M per school. (link)

The attorneys general of Montana and South Dakota are considering legal action to challenge aspects of the House settlement, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Michael McCann, who explain: “The AGs could maintain they enjoy standing by stressing they represent their respective state governments, which in turn charter and finance the public universities that are parties to the settlement by virtue of their NCAA membership. From that lens, states’ monies—i.e. taxpayer monies—are at stake in the settlement. So too are state government and university officers’ duties to oversee such monies and meet related fiduciary obligations. The AGs might insist they should have been consulted in the settlement discussions and should have been able to seek modifications before its approval.” However, they add, U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken “would be posed to deny these motions to intervene. … For starters, neither the AGs nor the states they represent are parties to the litigation and thus might lack standing. While the AGs could insist they, and the public universities in their states, all fall within the same umbrella known as the state’s government, Wilken might deem that a stretch. … Wilken could also question why the AGs didn’t act sooner, since the House litigation has been in court since 2020.” They go on to note that a better option for the AGs could be to “sue the NCAA in state court and seek a restraining order and injunction to block implementation of the settlement. State court would provide a number of advantages over federal court, including a more sympathetic forum through a local jury and, depending on the state, an elected judge. The NCAA has also struggled at times to remove state court filings to federal court.” Meanwhile, Houston Christian attorney James Sears Bryant tells Sportico that the school intends this week to file a notice of appeal of Wilken’s denial of its motion to intervene. (link)

Meanwhile, Plaintiffs’ lawyers in the House case have asked U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken to move the date of the hearing for preliminary approval from Sept. 5 to Aug. 12-14 or Aug. 19-22, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen reasserts his position that the Huskers will be aggressive on the NIL front, telling On3’s Pete Nakos: “Whether you like it or not, the era of compensating the athletes directly, in this way through NIL, is here. If you want to thrive, if you want to win, and let’s not kid ourselves, it’s all about winning. What do you need to do to win? You have to invest in NIL. You have to invest in the partnerships, you have to commit to it. Not being involved and not partnering ties one of your coach’s hands behind his back. My job is to give every coach everything they need to have success, and this is an important part of it.” Dannen also explains that awarding priority points to donors who contribute to the 1890 Collective gives fans confidence that NU is invested in NIL: “Our fans needed the assurance that this was positive for the University of Nebraska. The feedback I’ve gotten since the announcement a couple of weeks ago was that if we’re giving priority points, if that partnership is that tight, if it’s that important, then that’s something we need to be a part of.” Also from Dannen: “There’s always somebody that’s going to pay their athletes more, professionally, college sports, in every place. It’s how you pay it, it’s how you allocate it. It’s are you getting the bang for the buck? Are you not wasting money on those investments? I think that defines it.” (link)

“Without hesitation,” Massachusetts will “embrace the House settlement outcomes for the future of college athletics,” according to Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford, who adds: “That means adopting new roster limits for our 21 sports and creating revenue sharing opportunities for our student-athletes as early as 2025-26, among other things. Once the NCAA has codified rules for engagement, we will roll out a strategic plan, operationalize our plan and do our best to manage an ever-evolving landscape. In many ways, the work has already begun while we wait for final guidance on the procedures for implementation.” (link)
|
With the implementation of a new NIL Strategy unit, USF AD Michael Kelly remarks: “We are building a model athletic department for these modern times. As the era of permissiveness with what we can provide student-athletes and revenue sharing continues to evolve, South Florida intends to be as aggressive as we can be and continue to meet every new standard.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson analyze how new roster limits will impact various sports, including Power 4 football. Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck says teams will have to “re-identify and re-look at the word scholarship and then re-look at the word walk-on. If I told you right now, I want you to be a walk-on, but I have the ability to give you money, you take the money and whether I call you a walk-on or not, you’d rather take the money and have your school paid for. But does that mean you’re on scholarship? Or you’re still a walk-on? And where does that money actually come from? So I think that that’s where this whole thing has to be re-looked at.” UAB HC Trent Dilfer notes that it’s not a given walk-ons from P4 schools will find scholarship opportunities at the Group of 5 level: “Every once in a while, there are NIL walk-ons that are difference-making players at our level. But your typical guy who goes to Georgia to be the seventh quarterback, we’re recruiting better than that. … We fight hard tooth and nail for the 78th through 85th guy at an SEC school. Now there’s no chance they’re not going to turn down let’s say $35K to go to their dream school to be a third-string guy instead of coming to UAB or Memphis to be a difference maker.” For other sports, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti believes schools should have autonomy in prioritizing which sports should receive the most scholarship support. “You think about wrestling at Penn State and Iowa. You think about hockey at some of the places in the Big Ten. We’ve got institutions that make those decisions about what’s important on their campus, what’s important to their alums, tradition. It’s not clear cut.” More. (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Allen Winsor has dismissed a lawsuit filed by former Florida A&M Assoc. AD for Administration and Operations Michael Johnson, who alleged he was wrongfully terminated by the university and sexually harassed by then-state Representative Ramon Alexander. Johnson filed suit in 2022 claiming he was retaliated against after blowing the whistle on alleged equipment thefts and other wrongdoing and that Alexander groped him and subjected him to sexually charged texts and explicit videos of himself. FAMU denied Johnson had been wrongfully terminated and argued it had no connection to the allegations involving Alexander, a FAMU alumnus. Winsor stated in his ruling: “This case was resolved at summary judgment. All plaintiff’s claims are dismissed on the merits. Plaintiff shall take nothing.” (link)

NiJaree Canady’s decision to transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech could portend trouble for the Cardinal’s athletic department, the San Francisco Chronicle’s Marisa Ingemi writes, noting that in “revenue sports, [losing star players for NIL reasons] could have been unavoidable, but Stanford typically has thrived in Olympic and women’s sports. That a softball player could command a seven-figure deal leads to this question: Can Stanford keep pace in any sport if the market keeps being reset?” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: “I don’t think you can assume you’re going to keep doing well at a smaller sport or Olympic sport without considering NIL anymore. There are donors willing to set the market.” ESPN analyst/former Stanford softball student-athlete Jessica Mendoza also weighs in: “This is free agency now. It’s not like high school recruiting. NiJa is unprecedented, but it’s going to keep feeling like free agency after every season.” (link)

The $100K per year NIL deals between Las Vegas Aces players and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority includes language that specifically nullifies the arrangement in the event it is found to violate the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement, according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit, who report: “According to copies of the agreement, obtained through a public records request, if any of its provisions are found to conflict or be ‘inconsistent’ with either the CBA or a player’s contract, the sponsorship provisions ‘shall be of no force or effect.’ This would seem to address concerns that were raised in May, when the NIL deals were first announced, that the team was effectively circumventing the league’s salary cap.” (link); Attorney/LightSocialDigital Founder Josh Goldberg: “Something of interest regarding cap circumvention and how professional leagues deal with these issues. Similar structure should be contemplated for the future of college athletics, if collectively bargained, and if the goal is to crack down on collectives as per House settlement.” (link)
