Army West Point AD Mike Buddie joins The Athletics of Business podcast to discuss topics ranging from the Michie Stadium renovation project to the importance of clear communication and the value of responding positively to setbacks. Buddie emphasizes the importance of building relationships and says one of the most important assets one could have in this industry is references. “You have these minor interactions and you run into them or you sit next to them at a baseball game and the opinion is, ‘Well, he can quote movies and you know he's kind of funny and he understands the game of baseball.’ But when you have 30 of those interactions over a six-month window things start to appear, and it's, ‘Hey, every time that there's a piece of trash on the ground I noticed that Mike Buddie picked it up. He didn't keep walking. He took ownership of the college baseball facility. … So that work ethic, the attention to detail, being prepared for every meeting. If you just have one interaction with somebody, it probably doesn't even get noticed, but when you have multiple interactions with somebody or a group over a six-month, 12-month, three-year period, those things start to really register with them.” Lots more from Buddie. Troy AD Brent Jones talks with News4’s Briana Jones about maintaining a winning culture and says the coaches play a pivotal role, adding: “And also we need to be able to make it as attractive as possible for our student-athletes. That’s having some of the best facilities, that's embracing name, image and likeness, which we do. We have a collective that's been very successful. We have a great student population here, we have a great fan base, and so when you look at all the things that Troy has, there's no reason we shouldn't be successful. And you want people who want to be here…and I think part of the reason we have the best coaches and the best student-athletes is because we have the best fans, we have the best alums.” (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Boulware denied motions by UFC and fighters for preliminary approval of their $335M settlement of a case in which fighters argued the UFC used anti-competitive tactics to suppress their compensation. Boulware offered no details or explanation for the ruling, and Sportico’s Michael McCann observes that “it is very rare for an antitrust class action settlement to be rejected at the preliminary approval stage (as opposed to the final approval stage). It means the judge has rejected the settlement proposal even before the class members had a chance to weigh in at a fairness hearing or before opting out. The development is a reminder to those following the NCAA antitrust class action settlement for the House, Carter and Hubbard lawsuits that the filing of a settlement with a judge doesn’t mean it will be approved or approved in the form it was submitted.” (link)

Clemson is prepared to spend up to $975K in attorney fees through June 2025 in its ongoing legal battle to potentially leave the ACC. The school received authorization from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office to spend that amount with four law firms. The State’s Chapel Fowler and Joseph Bustos note that the week before Clemson filed its lawsuit against the ACC, the school had been authorized in mid-March to pay three law firms up to $475K combined over the first four months of its legal dispute from March 1 to June 30. Tigers Asst. AD for Communications Joe Galbraith explains the school is not using state money to pay for the lawsuit: “Any outside counsel working with Clemson University is being supported by athletics-generated revenue and private donor funding.” (link); The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau adds that it “remains unclear how much the university has paid to date, though, because these authorization requests just specify how much can be spent; they are not invoices for work already performed. … The four law firms approved for July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025 were Willson, Jones, Carter & Baxley in Greenville [South Carolina], Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Columbia, [South Carolina] Ropes & Gray in Boston, [Massachusetts], and Parry Law in Chapel Hill, [North Carolina]. All but Parry Law were part of the initial approvals in March. In this current fiscal year, Clemson is authorized to pay Nelson Mullins the most money, up to $500K, bringing that law firm's total to upwards of $750,000 for the first two rounds of authorizations. Ropes & Gray can receive up to $250K, bringing its max payout to $400K. Parry Law, which is heading up Clemson's defense against the ACC's countersuit in North Carolina, can be paid up to $150K through June 2025. Willson, Jones, Carter & Baxley received a second authorization for $75K, bringing its potential payout to a combined $150K. Add it all up, and Clemson could spend up to $1.45M on attorneys if its dispute with the ACC continues into the summer of 2025.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education this week announced that colleges will not be able to submit corrections to students’ federal-aid records in bulk during the 2024-25 financial-aid cycle. In June, the department announced that institutions would be able to do so in the first half of August — several months later than usual. Now, the department says batch corrections functionality will be deferred until the 2025-26 FAFSA cycle. “This decision is based on two main factors. First, due to the delayed delivery timeline, institutions would not be able to utilize batch corrections before they begin their fall semesters. Second, we are prioritizing the development of a well-tested, robust, and end-to-end launch of the 2025-26 form and need to ensure development resources are focused appropriately. We know this is also a priority for all our partners and students.” In the meantime, the department is providing no-cost technical assistance to help institutions submit corrections. (link, link)

+ The Florida A&M Board of Trustees has recommended giving Men’s Basketball HC Patrick Crarey a one-year deal rather than a three-year contract. Trustee Kelvin Lawson has expressed concerns over Crarey’s fit for the position and how he was selected. “Everyone knows it takes time in a program to rebuild. I get that. I want to be careful what I say because I’m not trying to be disparaging, but out of 50 candidates, this person probably wouldn’t have finished in the top five in most races.” HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither notes that “despite the fact that Florida A&M University men’s basketball has recorded 17-consecutive losing seasons…FAMU Board of Trustees Vice Chair Deveron Gibbons echoed the doubt as to whether Crarey was the best candidate for the job. But it bothers me when I see some names on there, many which I don’t even know, but I look at their background and experience and wonder how we got to this individual [Crarey] that’s two [divisions] beneath where we are playing in the SWAC. I lean towards the person having a one-year agreement and give them a contract based on how they do this year and revisit it later.” Rattlers AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes pushed back on the one-year option, saying: “I wholeheartedly believe that this is the person to lead our program forward at this time. I know he can do the job. I think it best aligns with our strategic priorities and goals when we speak about recruiting and retaining talent to offer a multiyear contract.” (link)

The company also confirmed prereleased figures of sales up nearly 9% to €5.82B, with footwear revenue leading the charge. Adidas’ sales in Europe grew in the double digits in the second quarter, while in Greater China they rose nearly 10%. But the company posted a drop in North America sales due to the significantly smaller Yeezy business. (link)

DraftKings is shuttering its NFT business, explaining in an email to customers: “After careful consideration, DraftKings has decided to discontinue Reignmakers and our NFT Marketplace, effective immediately, due to recent legal developments. This decision was not made lightly, and we believe it is the right course of action.” Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer points out the “decision comes weeks after a judge allowed a class action lawsuit against DraftKings to proceed after discovering plaintiffs ‘possibly pled’ that the company’s NFTs were unregistered securities.” (link)

+ Cal Poly has unveiled its newly renovated women’s soccer locker room, which underwent $250K in upgrades. Additionally, the nearly $10M tennis complex is also getting an enhancement. + Wichita State plans to start construction on upgrades to Wilkins Stadium, home of the Shockers’ softball team, in October. Currently, WSU is in the process of designing a new indoor practice facility that will include a full turf infield and batting cages. Shockers Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities and Operations Brad Pittman notes the original cost for Phase 1 of the renovation has increased from $7.3M to $9.65M due to inflation and breaking up the construction process into more phases. “I think we have $2-3M left to go to get to the end line. Our hope is we can get there before the end of the calendar year.” The total cost of the renovation was originally $17.5M, but the increased cost for Phase 1 has resulted in a new total cost of $19.85M. New Orleans AD Tim Duncan addresses the 25% budget reduction the athletic department will incur in 2024-25, noting it will result in a reduction of around $2M. Duncan cites UNO’s declining enrollment, the NCAA’s new Student-Athlete Core Guarantees and the House settlement as factors contributing to the budget cut and adds: “Over the past seven months, I have had multiple meetings with head coaches and senior staff members to strategically reduce the budget while trying to mitigate the impact on our student-athletes. Unfortunately, the reductions will affect personnel, operational dollars, travel expenses, and even athletic scholarships.” Duncan goes on to explain that “when looking to hire head coaches, we have intentionally searched for candidates with successful track records from smaller institutions with fewer resources than we have. We have been fortunate to find those gems. Their unique skill set is even more important today than when they were hired. … Moreover, with the inevitable transition of full-time personnel, we are working with financial aid and career services to find and hire talented students who may have an interest in gaining real world experience in event management, marketing, social media, compliance, and business operations.” (link)

Evansville AD Ziggy Siegfried sits down with Inside Indiana Business’ Mitzi Morris to discuss topics ranging from facilities to community engagement and says the Purple Aces are working to partner with a design company for renderings of the Kyle and Ashley Freeland Clubhouse. “Then we’ll start to work on where exactly the clubhouse is going to go. Right now, we believe that’s going to be down the first baseline. The clubhouse will include a nice locker room and coaches’ offices. We’re looking at some lounge space and a few other things that will go inside the facility. We’re trying to determine if it’s going to be one level or two levels, but it’ll end up being about a $3M to $3.5M project.” Siegfried also notes the athletic department is working with the university on enrollment management initiatives “to make sure that we are contributing positively to our enrollment goals on campus. When you look at student-athletes paying for tuition, housing, meals and stuff like that, we increased by a million dollars from the previous year. That’s an unheard-of number; we won’t be able to do that much increase probably ever again. But we put a structure in place that allowed us to do that because the majority of our student-athletes aren’t on scholarship, so they are paying for at least a portion of their tuition and other expenses.” Also from Siegfried: ”We put a huge emphasis on our ticket sales. It was right around $550K a few years ago. This year, we were at $900K. We increased specifically for men’s basketball. If you look at a few years ago, we only generated $38K individual game tickets for men’s basketball. This year, we did $170K. A lot of that was our team was winning, and we had some good marketing strategies.” Full Q&A. (link)

Ole Miss Senior Deputy AD for External Relations Eric Wood joins RebelGrove’s Chase Parham to discuss his move to Oxford, how his experience helps the Rebels in the SEC, football scheduling, the state of the industry and more. Wood says he approached his role as Louisiana Tech’s AD, as well as his post at Ole Miss, as if he were an alumnus. “You make decisions differently when you love the place. … So I really just tried to flip my mindset. What does that look like? That means I'm going to learn the alma mater, I'm going to learn the fight song early on. My kids are going to know it, and my wife's going to know it, and that, to me, that's how you start getting all in.” Wood also notes that “early on in the career you say well this stop might be three to five, this spot might be a two-year stop. … Now I've kind of checked the box that I've been an AD – and I’m not saying I would never want to do it again – but I'm like I'm invested. I want to know the history of this place. I want to know the legends of this place and I want to learn the fight song and the alma mater and you make decisions differently when you get that invested in it.” Wood also explains part of the reason he completed a terminal degree later in his career is because he rose through the ranks on the internal side, the “areas where you don’t become an athletics director generally speaking” and “who makes the hire for the athletics director? A chancellor, a president, depending on what system is, and I wanted them to see that as the leader of their athletic department I was going to care about the academic piece. I was going to care about the holistic development of a student.” Full podcast. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous webmaster Q&As with The CW President Dennis Miller, who says of the decision to broadcast Washington State and Oregon State games: “We went through a whole research analysis of Oregon State and Washington State. Then we looked at where our overlap is with stations and what we could accomplish, and some of the matchups that they were starting to talk about. So it just felt like, ‘Hey, this is a good fit.’ We’re moving in and we’re going to be able to take advantage of the momentum that they have.” With ACC games paired with Pac-12 games on Saturdays, Miller says the network hopes to “provide some habits and the ability to form some habits. … We’ll go anywhere from 3.5 to 14 hours of sports on Saturdays. We’re hoping that audiences will be able to know, ‘Hey, I can find my team, on this day, on a regular basis here,’ which we think helps with some of the consumer confusion that’s out there right now.” To continue building awareness for its college products, Miller explains that “we’ve got to take advantage of the social media followings of a lot of the athletes on these teams because that’s a big driver to finding sports today.” On the Pac-12 Enterprises production facility: “We’re building out the facility to be agnostic so we can cover the ACC, we can cover the Pac-12. Obviously, just given their history and the quality of the work, we’re hoping it can lead to other things. We’re talking to other rights holders all the time about what else is available. … I think with the teams and with the schools here, we’re going to just try to identify more product. Live sports and broadcasts have gone together well for a long time. I think the IP holders like the reach of it and the consistency there. So we’re hoping to do more with the Pac-12 going forward.” Full interview. (link)

On Location EVP for Collegiate/Anthony Travel Founder & CEO John Anthony tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that “we're going to have a sold-out stadium” for the Aer Lingus Classic between Florida State and Georgia Tech on August 24. “Of the 48,000 people in the stadium that day, 25,000 will be Americans. … It shows that Florida State and Georgia Tech fans have responded, and they're excited about it, and it also validates what we're building in Ireland with a following of American college football fans.” Portnoy notes this year’s iteration will receive the full ESPN College GameDay treatment, marking the first time the show has aired outside the U.S. Anthony explains: “When we first brought the idea of ‘College GameDay’ to [officials] in Ireland, not surprisingly, no one [there] had ever heard of it or knew what it was. We showed them videos. We sat down with ESPN and Irish officials together, and we showed them what the audiences had been, what the receptions have been, showed them the viewership numbers, and they're all-in. The Irish love a party. They may not know what College GameDay was before, but they will afterward, because they're going to show up.” (link)

In the first of a multi-part interview with A Sea of Red, Liberty AD Ian McCaw looks back on the Flames’ first season in Conference USA and says: “My short summary statement is we won and we learned. Certainly, football had an exceptional season to win 13 games, a conference championship, and going to the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Overall, we had 12 conference championships, which is a tremendous year, a lot of success. In some of the programs where maybe we didn’t realize our goals, I think we made adjustments to put ourselves in position to be competitive and compete for conference championships this upcoming coming year. … The competitive level and athleticism is a big step up from the ASUN in pretty much every sport. Overall, I think we adjusted pretty well from that standpoint. The travel is also very different in terms of both location and being more expensive. I believe we will be able to handle the logistics better in year two than we did in year one.” (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce President Mark Rudin has “confirmed with the chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and the chancellor that no vote will be taken on any rebranding of A&M-Commerce at this week's BOR meeting. I look forward to meeting with the BOR during this week’s executive session to discuss legal issues related to any potential name change to our university.” (link); Lions AD Jim Curry clarifies that any rebranding decisions are part of a conversation and says there is a “lot of misinformation out there right now. I think if I were to tell anybody where we are with that discussion is that it’s a very active listening exercise right now. Not to say that something couldn’t happen soon, and that decision may be that we're really happy with where we are right now. But I think a lot of options are on the table to include keeping the name the same. A&M-Dallas obviously has been a conversation. What I can tell you for sure is A&M-Dallas at Commerce, which is the name that was kind of floated initially, was never on the table, has never been on the table. … We don’t have enough space on the field to put all those letters on it.” Ultimately, Curry emphasizes that no decisions have been made and the discussions are taking into account “the university not just right now, but where we want to be 40 years from now.” More from Curry, including the progress being made on the $70M event center, which will serve as the home for the Lions’ court sports and other community events and for which ground could be broken as early as 2025.
