CollegeAD provides details on Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh’s extension through June 30, 2029. McIntosh’s base salary will start at $950K and increase by $50K each year starting July 1, 2025. McIntosh will also earn $500K annually from the UW Foundation and can earn up to $200K annually in incentive pay. Bonuses include $30K for a GSR of 92% and $50K for a GSR above 93%. The Badgers will also pay McIntosh 7.5% of the aggregate incentive compensation earned each year by UW HCs. Should UW terminate the contract without cause, McIntosh would be owed 75% of his remaining base pay and additional compensation over the remainder of the term. If McIntosh accepts another college administration job or an executive post with an NFL team, he would owe UW 25% of any remaining base pay and/or additional compensation he would have earned over the remainder of the contract. Nebraska AD Troy Dannen tells On3’s Andy Staples it’s time for NU to embrace the new direction of college athletics: “Sometimes we want to romanticize the past and quit worrying about the present and what happened, and 20 years from now the romance of college athletics is going to be today. But what had to happen, the five national championships that Nebraska’s won were won under a different model, in a different environment, a different era. And we’re not chasing those five championships, we’re chasing Michigan last year, we’re chasing Ohio State, we’re chasing Georgia. So what do you do to chase it? … One of the things I felt we needed to do at Nebraska was get people comfortable in the fact that we’re going to be compensating, whether it’s through NIL or whether it’s through revenue share, it may be down the line employment. We’re gonna be compensating. It doesn’t make the game worse, doesn’t make it better, it doesn’t mean you need to turn away from it. So I’m going to need their support. Today I needed it in NIL, next year I’m going to need a revenue-sharing model.” (link)

The structure of the House settlement may be a boon for the Big East, as Xavier Men’s Basketball HC Sean Miller explains: “In so many ways, it works to our advantage. The good thing about being in the Big East is it’s about one sport. I shouldn’t say one sport, but I think the importance of college basketball is at the top and after what just happened in the landscape of college sports, it puts us in a very unique position.” Alabama HC Nate Oats tells The Athletic’s CJ Moore and Kyle Tucker: “That’s a problem. As long as it’s equitable across all the high-major schools, you’re fine. But if one’s got $22M and one’s got $5M, that’s a problem. We’re not going to be able to compete. They haven’t thought everything through.” Florida HC Todd Golden says SEC coaches have been concerned about this scenario since last year. “You have all these great basketball schools that have no football they have to take care of, so yeah, definitely, we are worried about that.” Oats goes on to say Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari “actually had a good point, talking to him last week: The only moneymaker the NCAA has is the men’s basketball tournament. So all this money that the NCAA is paying out, like 70% of it is going to former football players. So you’re going to take the money from the NCAA, where the only money they make is on the NCAA Tournament, and give 70% of that to football players? What sense does that make? And is that not asking for another lawsuit from the basketball players?” (link)

James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis highlights some details of the long-form House settlement and notes that “Shared Revenue includes revenue categories 1, 7, 11, 12, 13, 13A, 15, and 19 from the [NCAA] MFRS (Membership Financial Reporting System). This encompasses a broad range of revenue sources, including but not limited to media rights, ticket sales and sponsorships. Average Shared Revenue is calculated based on MFRS data for the conference defendant member institutions including Notre Dame.” Davis also points out that new athletic scholarships (up to $2.5M per institution per year) will count against the benefits pool. “The settlement included an example of an institution currently offering nine scholarships in baseball versus the 11.7 permitted. If the institution opts to award 15 scholarships in baseball after final approval of the settlement, the number of new scholarships is 3.3 (15-11.7, not 15-9).” Given the potential changes, Davis advises: “Now is the time for athletic departments to adjust financial strategies to accommodate for the new requirements. Not only are you considering the direct financial impacts of revenue share and increased roster sizes, but you should also contemplate the additional personnel needed to ensure compliance and continue to support your athletes effectively.” More. Tarleton State President James Hurley joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on the reclassification process for the Texans, including the mental health ramifications for student-athletes forced to sit out of championship eligibility during the four-year process. Hurley and Brown discuss the academic success of Tarleton throughout the journey, with the Texans achieving the highest APR score among institutions going through the reclassification process throughout NCAA history. Hurley: “It was always about raising our academic pedigree and our academic profile and the institutional profile and it’s done that. More people across the country know Tarleton State today than they did five years ago.” Hurley also shares insight into the evolving role university presidents play in the business of college athletics due to the impact of NIL, the transfer portal and conference realignment: “It’s almost forced all of us to become more active and engaged in athletics. I certainly had to do so as well. Thankfully I’ve got a great AD and great coaches and a great support staff that really keeps it between the banks of the river, so to speak.” More. (link)

Elon AD Jenn Strawley joins the Voices of Elon Athletics podcast to discuss her first year on the job and what she’s focusing on in Year 2 and beyond. As the landscape continues to change, Strawley emphasizes the need for “Elon to be the very best version of itself. We don’t need to compare ourselves to others, we don’t need to think about those spaces. We need to be the very best version of ourselves. We need to define what success looks like on our terms and we need to find success on our terms. … I challenge us at Elon to think about how we lean into a four-year model. We create an experience students want to be a part of and student-athletes do too, and that's our advantage. So, if we lean into that and we figure out how we maximize that four-year experience, we're going to have an incredible advantage amongst our competitors.” Full podcast. (link)

Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey used D1.relocation for his move from Stephen F. Austin to Ruston: “The team at D1 Relocation did a wonderful job in assisting with our move. They were professional, quick, efficient and accurate. The moving team that they connected us with provided great service and exceptional moving expertise. I am extremely happy to be a current department partner with D1.relocation and now a customer. I would strongly recommend using them to any and all athletics department personnel. As individuals that are connected to the intercollegiate athletics industry, they know exactly what their clients and families are going through and work relentlessly to ensure a smooth transition.” (link)

A total of 111 current and former Utah State student-athletes have signed a letter supporting former Deputy AD for External Affairs Jerry Bovee and former Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Amy Crosbie. From the letter: "We can unequivocally and without any hesitation state that in our experience, they are individuals of integrity and prioritize doing the right thing. They have always carried themselves with professionalism and commitment to the athletes they serve. Any statements or inferences to the contrary would be misleading." The letter goes on to call for a "full and transparent investigation" of their dismissals "conducted by a third party that does not have any relationship with the university, the athletics department, or any university employee involved in their dismissal, including any relationship that existed with a University employee prior to their employment at the University." Following remarks made last week by USC Football HC Lincoln Riley about the future of the Trojans’ football series with Notre Dame, Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua yesterday said: “We have every intention in the world and every desire to keep that USC-Notre Dame game going for as long as it possibly can. Everything we’ve heard from USC and the people we’ve been talking to over the course of the last year and beyond is they’re gung ho as well. … It is one of the great rivalries not just in football, but in all sports. We absolutely want to continue that rivalry. We think it’s wonderful for Notre Dame. We think it’s wonderful for Southern Cal. We think it’s great for college football. It’s hard to imagine a college football landscape where Notre Dame and USC aren’t playing each other on an annual basis.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams and Stewart Mandel chronicle the transfer portal recruitment of Texas Tech softball student-athlete NiJaree Canady, who reportedly agreed to join the Red Raiders after agreeing to a $1M+ NIL deal through The Matador Club collective. Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence: “It’s absolutely unprecedented for an annual compensation for a DI softball player. Canady might be getting paid more than every single softball player in her conference combined.” Williams and Mandel note that Canady family originally approached the Stanford-focused Lifetime Cardinal collective in the spring of Canady’s freshman season for the Cardinal in 2023. The family was seeking a seven-figure offer. “By the time Stanford reached a second straight WCWS last month, all parties realized a bidding war was coming for Canady’s right arm.” Red Raiders HC Gerry Glasco: “It was different than any other recruitment I’ve been involved with. They really had a business-like approach to it early on.” Williams and Mandel note that it “also became clear that NIL would be a motivating factor in Canady’s ultimate destination. Despite getting a later start than other collectives, Lifetime Cardinal was “preparing to make a much larger offer later this month that would be ‘within shouting distance’ of Tech’s,” according to Williams and Mandel, who note that Tech sealed the deal by rolling out the red carpet for Canady on her visit. Glasco: “It was absolutely amazing to me to see how the entire athletic department jumped in to help us recruit. When NiJa first got here, I think there was a lot of skepticism that she might not like this place, this is a waste of her time. And the minute she walked on campus and saw the beauty, felt the love, things just clicked and we got the result that we got.” Lots more. (link)

ESPN’s David Hale examines some of the consequences of roster limits as part of the House settlement and notes that in football most Power 4 programs “are currently at somewhere between 120-130 total roster spots (including walk-ons) but schools don't want the scholarship number that high because it would be VERY expensive to hand out 130 football scholarships (which also likely means 45 + on women's side too for Title IX). So they've negotiated for a lower number that theoretically still allows a team to handle normal attrition and hold full practices, though most coaches I've talked to aren't thrilled with the outcome. But, set all that aside, and there are bigger ripple effects. First, assume all P4s max out & go 85->105. That's 20 new scholies/team or 1,380 new P4 schools. Where do nearly 1400 scholarship players come from? Well, for one, it's a great year to be a high school recruit. After years of saying they're getting squeezed by the portal, there are going to be WAY more offers from bigger schools. But the flip side of that is G5s are going to get KILLED. First, tons of fringe players who might've gone to Ohio or Troy will be going to Ohio State or Auburn now. Second, a whole mess of G5s are going to hit the portal knowing there's room at a higher level. I've talked to a number of G5 coaches who think they can at least still sell playing time but... it's going to be a bloodbath. Moreover, most G5s are NOT going to be able to afford 105 scholarships, so they'll be at a bigger disadvantage regardless.” Also, Hale notes that several P4 coaches feel obligated to use all 105 scholarships but few are eager. “Clearly some underfunded P4s are going to be reluctant. Several schools I talked to who will not go to 105 – and some may even go below 85(!) in this new world and just choose to invest elsewhere. They'll get killed for it on the recruiting trail but they'll live w/it.” More from Hale. (link); Extra Points publisher Matt Brown adds: “I've talked to a few G5 ADs recently who don't think they want to go all the way to 105. More FB scholarships can make Title IX math much harder if the school uses other sports for enrollment management. Wouldn't be shocked if some stay at 85-90.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale continues to emphasize the need for a student-athlete voice in the wake of the long-form House settlement and tells On3’s Eric Prisbell: “I really hope this big first step of the settlement that [enables] schools to now share money with athletes has a next phase before next year, when the money starts getting shared, that includes the athletes negotiating for themselves. … I’m concerned because the athletes aren’t involved in the setting of those terms (of enforcement of “true NIL” deals). But if the athletes were to agree to that because they felt, as a whole, they were going to recoup that same money plus more guaranteed money because it’s coming from the school and not a collective and they were willing to give that up – that would be one thing. But just saying ‘You’re giving that up?’ That’s not how this works. That’s how transfer rules were eliminated because schools and conferences and the NCAA chose to set them up without the athletes agreeing to it.” Meanwhile, another industry source tells Prisbell using this settlement to transition to a more professional model is like “turning a camper into a houseboat. I suppose it could work, but everyone would prefer to have started from scratch and built something made for water, versus form-fitting something not actually intended to be used in this way. My money is still on employment and a CBA at some point in two to five years. I don’t see this framework being long-term given how it is constructed.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy profiles Texas AD Chris Del Conte, who was named SBJ’s AD of the Year, and is told by Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “Chris deserves every accolade he’s received, because he’s [been successful] for years now. The University of Texas has always had some opportunities not available to many other universities, but that doesn’t mean they’ve consistently maximized them. They did under DeLoss Dodds and are back doing it now [under Del Conte] and subsequently knocking it out of the park. Candidly, I’m not surprised at all.” Longtime colleague and TCU AD Jeremiah Donati adds: “He’s done an incredible job [of] what I would call rebuilding their brand. There’s no question that they had underperformed kind of across the board, to be honest. He’s done a really good job, just like he’s done in his previous stops, understanding what the challenge was, what the resources are and he’s deployed them, and he’s been able to use his vision.” Del Conte, meanwhile, tells Portnoy: “Everyone says that a job like Texas is easy. It’s more difficult because expectations are so high and you’re trying to figure out how to restabilize a dysfunctional unit that has been [systematically challenged] for a 10-year period in leadership voids. You can’t keep changing leadership hoping [something changes]. That’s the definition of insanity. We just collectively said, ‘Wait a minute, before we start pointing fingers at anybody else, let’s fix us first. And if we fix us first, good things will happen.’” More. (link)

New Orleans President Kathy Johnson this spring ordered the athletic department to cut its budget by 25% as the school seeks to trim a $15M deficit. Nola.com’s Marie Fazio notes UNO’s enrollment has plunged from a peak of around 17K in 2003 to 6,600 last fall, prompting the university to dip into cash reserves and revenue from other sources, including federal pandemic aid, to stay afloat. The university's new budget includes the elimination of more than 70 positions; however, Johnson says the “vast majority” were already unfilled because of employees who quit after Johnson required all staffers to end remote work and return to campus full-time. Johnson says UNO is optimistic about this year’s enrollment but declined to share specific numbers. (link)

In its investigation of Michigan’s football program, the NCAA reportedly found instances of impermissible contact with football recruits during the pandemic-era dead period, a staffer who engaged in impermissible on-field activities over the course of a season, and alleges former HC Jim Harbaugh engaged in “unethical or dishonest conduct and a failure to cooperate.” According to the 11-page Notice of Allegations, the NCAA grouped multiple instances of impermissible contact with three recruits involving unidentified coaches and staff members as part of Allegation No. 1, a Level II violation. Allegation No. 2 found that a redacted staffer, reportedly revealed as former defensive analyst Ryan Osborn, committed a Level II violation by providing “technical or tactical instruction to football student-athletes.” The third allegation claims Harbaugh committed a potential Level I violation when he “violated the NCAA principles of ethical conduct and failed to cooperate” during a 2022 interview with investigators regarding the impermissible in-person and off-campus recruiting contact involving his program. From the NOA: “The factual information establishes (Harbaugh) met with the football prospective student-athletes and their fathers.” The NCAA enforcement team believes a hearing panel could find Harbaugh “undermined or threatened the integrity of the NCAA Collegiate Model” and could issue him a Level I violation and a show-cause penalty. Warsaw, who will add the title of NIL General Manager, will lead a staff tasked with identifying NIL opportunities, marketing, fundraising, education, scheduling and execution of NIL commitments, and the growth of NIL resources among their duties. Bulls AD Michael Kelly: “College athletics is changing and evolving rapidly and the University of South Florida intends to be on the forefront of that evolution. We are building a model athletic department for these modern times. As the era of permissiveness with what we can provide student-athletes and revenue sharing continues to evolve, South Florida intends to be as aggressive as we can be and continue to meet every new standard.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro says of Disney’s negotiations with the NBA and WNBA that “we were completely aligned in terms of prioritizing digital and prioritizing streaming. So, yes, the linear television business remains important to us. It has been important, it will continue to be important to us, but at the same time, we’re running parallel paths here, we’re significantly invested in streaming. Because, again, they understand that this is where our audience is migrating — to these direct-to-consumer platforms – and so we need to be there. At the same time, cable and broadcast are still important to the NBA and the WNBA.” In discussing the WNBA specifically, Pitaro explains: “The league has been a priority for ESPN for decades, and we take a lot of pride in how much we’ve invested in the league. We love to see the current momentum, especially coming out of the recent All-Star Game — I’m sure you saw the ratings, but close to 3.5M viewers — we maintain rights to the All-Star Game going forward for all 11 years of the new deal, but keeping the WNBA as a part of this deal was critical for us. “We’re looking at a rising tide right now, where we’re seeing our competitors in the industry really get behind women’s sports in general and behind the WNBA, and that’s a good thing.” (link)
