+ The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Portland State is ready for use by those of you interested in leading the Vikings. San Diego AD Kimya Massey: “D1.dossiers was a great tool for the process, really allowed me to obtain a strong sense of what the mission and values of the institution were as well as if they aligned with my values. It also gave me a wider perspective on how the budget was formulated, staff size and retention and the past and current success of the programs. I really appreciated the in-depth information regarding the campus structure and organization as well. I’d highly recommend reviewing the dossiers going into the interview to best prepare yourself for not only the questions you will answer, but also to ensure that you are truly committed to the job and feel you have a strong pulse on whether or not you can be successful in this position.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner updates on the trajectory of Oregon State & Washington State: “With Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould running point, the schools are in discussions with multiple conferences — in both the Power Four and Group of Five — about strategic partnerships that could take effect as early as the 2025 season, according to an industry source. Those discussions, the source added, are not specific to WSU and OSU potentially joining one of the power leagues, although that option ‘definitely’ has not been dismissed. Instead, the conversations are wide-ranging in nature and include possible scheduling alliances or ‘creative ways to work together’ that could provide ‘a stepping stone to the future,’ the source added.” Wilner goes on to report the Big 12 is “not interested,” per another industry source. More: “Some form of affiliation with the Mountain West is likely, but given other uncertainties, (WSU and OSU) could have other options to consider.” (link)
|
Wilner also breaks down what Cal and Stanford will be contributing back to the ACC for their first nine years as members. Wilner notes that while Stanford wasn’t bound to disclose its membership agreement, the terms likely are identical to those in Cal’s deal, which stipulates the Bears will give back “67% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during each of the first 7 years following the Effective Date; 30% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during the 8th year following the Effective Date; and 25% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during the 9th year following the Effective Date.” Wilner subsequently points out that “Cal’s athletic department relies on roughly $30M annually from central campus in order to balance the books. Stanford’s fiscal issues are such that it eliminated 11 sports programs in 2020, only to reinstate them after a severe backlash. And last year, the Cardinal reported a $21M operating shortfall despite $12M in university support that was booked as revenue. … Hotline projections show each of the ACC’s long-standing members will receive $497.5M over the contract term, while Cal and Stanford will take home $302.1M apiece. Each school is $195.4M behind its competition over the contract term. … Is there a plan to offset the nine-figure disparity? Details are sparse on both campuses.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit believes the NCAA has taken a blow with the loss of Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who sponsored legislation earlier this year that would prevent college athletes from obtaining employee status, as he has officially lost his primary race to state Sen. John McGuire following a court-certified recount. Libit: “A former college wrestler and athletic administrator at Liberty University, he introduced in May the ‘Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act,’ which would not only forbid college athletes from being deemed employees of their schools, but also their conferences and the NCAA. By extension, the bill would prevent athletes from joining a union, as the Dartmouth men’s basketball team did earlier this year. … Last month, an amended version of H.R. 8534 was reported out by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and placed on the union calendar of bills that are eligible for floor consideration. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has yet to take it up or publicly address the issue of athlete employee status, having instead focused on transgender athletes competing in NCAA women’s sports. In late June, Johnson hosted a panel discussion along with college swimmer Riley Gaines. With November’s presidential election close at hand, it is hard to imagine H.R. 8534 going any further this cycle. Good’s absence from Congress next year is unlikely to have much bearing on the ultimate fate of the Congressional debate over college athlete compensation, which has grown increasingly partisan as the subject has moved beyond NIL rights to those of employee status and unionization.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White sits down with VolQuest for a number of updates. Notably on the state of the industry: “Disappointing to see us constantly in litigation. We obviously had our ridiculous set of circumstances with the NCAA and their lack of ability to kind of, what’s the term? See the forest through the trees. We need to be more proactive as an industry and accept the realities of where we are and come up with some rational, just common sense plans and guardrails around all things NIL revenue sharing, whatever you want to call it. [...] For people that do what I do and for our coaches, it’s a 365 day a year problem. I don’t know if there’s ever been a time as hard as it is right now to work in college sports. And we went from Covid to this legal stuff, and the lack of leadership at the NCAA from the onset and the lack of real direction from anybody, has put us all in where it’s a moving target. [...] We need the people in leadership positions nationally to start to do some of those things too. We’re having a hard time letting go of the past, but our coaches have to do it.” On Neyland Stadium’s south end zone upgrades: “Yeah, it’s on track. It’ll look like the renderings we put out. We’re gonna make sure it has the iconic look that we see on the west side of our stadium. That is awesome. We need more of the stadium and eventually all of the stadium to look like that.” White also says there’s no timeline yet on construction related to the entertainment district to adjoin Neyland, but figuring out a solution to parking is a key next step. As for a potential corporate logo on UT’s football field: “We are pushing corporate sponsorships hard. We’ve more than doubled how much is coming in through the Vol Network in the last three years. We’re working on our licensing numbers. We’re up to No. 2 or No. 3 in the country in licensing right now from way below. We were in the teens, I think. Our licensing numbers have just about doubled too. We’re trying to maximize every revenue stream possible, especially the ones that don’t come out of (fans) wallet. And we’re not gonna ask them to pay above and beyond what our competition is paying. But we have to be aware of what the market is across the Southeastern Conference.” Lots more. (link, link)

Noting that this is the first year since 2018 the Aggies are not on NCAA probation or in an active investigation, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts updated the A&M system board of regents this week on the state of the athletic department. Reducing the administrative staff by 18 employees has saved roughly $2M and there is “probably more room for additional staff reductions.” Among other business-related updates, Alberts said a PNL was run on all programs, and football is the only profitable sport. Outside events, including hosting at Kyle Field in June the Mexico vs. Brazil soccer match and the George Strait concert, brought in $6.5M in profit. The cumulative GPA this past year was the highest ever, at just under 3.1 while the GSR is among the highest in department history at 87%, a number Alberts wants to see reach at least 90%. In other news from College Station, Alberts issued an apology for a typo on the McNeese State football game printed tickets, “Season tickets were delivered last week and, unfortunately, the McNeese game contains a graphic design error, [returning QB] Conner Weigman's first name was misspelled. We have apologized to Conner and his family for the mistake, and we are actively establishing a more robust proofing process moving forward to prevent future errors.” The tickets are still valid for entry and at the end of the season TAMU will mail a complimentary commemorative season ticket to all season ticket holders. Kentucky President Eli Capilouto yesterday addressed some of the allegations against former Cats Swimming HC Lars Jorgensen and alleged insufficient action by school officials: “The most serious of the allegations were only known to us at the time a lawsuit was filed by two former staff members and after the coach had been dismissed.” Capilouto added that he and AD Mitch Barnhart, "are sickened by allegations that members of the UK community suffered harm because of the actions of someone entrusted to protect and empower our student athletes and staff.” As far as the sexual misconduct allegations against Jorgensen, Capilouto noted: “We will not tolerate abuse, and neither should anyone who is a member of our community. The responsibility in these cases is for our athletics administration to report allegations as soon as they become aware of them. Our Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity Office (IEEO) is to investigate those allegations and make recommendations for potential remedies. Those processes are being followed at UK. But we need to go beyond that.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge gets feedback from coaches around the nation on how a significant increase in scholarships & a hard roster cap will impact the sport. One unnamed coach: “I think you are going to see a lot of schools at varying levels. It’s like a salary cap at 34, but you’ll see teams at 34, some at 11.7, and some at 6 now that will stay there. And everything in between. They’ll tell their coaches to do the best you can with what we can provide.” Another: “Many coaches will have a hard time narrowing it down to 34 before the fall if that’s the rule. Starting the fall with only 34 kids will be hard on everybody because there are always a couple of injuries or a kid who decides he doesn’t want to play anymore. You may look at schools starting the spring with 30 healthy players.” LSU HC Jay Johnson: “I think the beginning of the school year is good. It puts more accountability on evaluation and bringing the right people into your program. I’m comfortable with that. I’d like to see you declare your roster on say, August 20 – the same day for everybody.” (link)

If you’ve been wondering who in the Idaho athletics department carved the Potato State Trophy, which will be awarded annually to the winner of the Idaho-Idaho State football rivalry game, Extra Points’ Matt Brown has the details. How did the trophy come to be? Vandals Asst. AD for Brand Engagement & Digital Strategy Jerek Wolcott explains: “I grabbed a piece of Douglas fir, just a firewood round, and my angle grinder and started working on it. Just kept going on it until it looked like a potato. … I would say I spent probably 10 to 12 hours on the carving, getting the initial log down into the potato form. You think of potatoes as kind of like an oval. But it's really, really elongated, if you actually look at a potato. My first one was way too fat. I had to keep working on it and really get in there and get some wood off of it. And then, of course, you can't really clamp it down because it's such a weird shape. So I'm holding it with my legs on the ground in my backyard, because I didn't want it in my garage getting dust everywhere. So it was really kind of a ridiculous thing.” More from Brown. (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond talks about the prep work that went into joining the Big Ten now that the move is official and explains to the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch how the Bruins will utilize the $10.32M set aside for student-athlete support: “With charter flights, we implemented a travel review board with a comprehensive assessment of each team’s schedule to evaluate when and where to charter based on different factors — basically, flight distance, plane availability and exam schedules — to minimize missed class times and trips outside the Pacific time zone outside of the academic year, and we’re in the early stages of this. … Academically, we’ve increased spending in academic support by $1.5M annually. We’ve added more learning specialists, we’re going to travel more people with teams to help with their academic pursuits and we’re going to schedule in ways that limit additional days away. In mental health, we’ve added at least $560K to the budget for next year and around $1M per year over the last two years. … The last part is nutrition — we’re going to be spending north of $4M annually. Starting this fall, every student-athlete will get breakfast and lunch five days a week whereas they used to have to rely on campus meal plans and supplemental snacks.” Jarmond says of unexpected hurdles along the way: “I thought some of my fellow Big Ten schools would be more excited about coming out to L.A. and the warm weather. I wanted to see a few more events — maybe neutral-site events — in L.A., but I think we’re still in the early stages of working through schedules.” On distributing revenue: “We don’t have anything finalized, but I anticipate more revenue going to football and men’s basketball student-athletes simply due to the fact that they are responsible for more of the revenue.” Lots more. Washington AD Pat Chun talks with On Montlake publisher Christian Caple about the Huskies’ future in the Big Ten and points out that “in recent metrics, we leave with the second-highest operating budget in the Pac-12. To my understanding, we go into the Big Ten now with the No. 10 operating budget. It’s a very different place from a budgetary standpoint, a revenue standpoint and an expenditure standpoint that this school has not been at, probably ever. … For this institution to be surrounded by like institutions with huge research, great academics, medical systems, big athletics — we clearly are a Big Ten school. But our pathway to the top is going to be different from what the pathway was the last 100 years. We enter a league where the biggest schools have 30,000 more seats in their stadiums than us. … There’s a $50M to $100M delta that we won’t hit from those seats that they have that we don’t have. Now, every athletic department is a little different, and those schools sponsor more sports than us. But the reality is, they start the year with more dollars just by the way they’re structured.” Asked to what degree UW will utilize charter flights, Chun explains that football, and men’s and women’s basketball will use them. “And we’re going to look at the return (flights) for some of our teams. There are time-zone changes, too. I think we’ve been most conscientious of, if a team is somewhere on the back end of a trip, what is the most expeditious way to get them back to campus? And some of those may be private aviation, charter flights.” Chun on private equity: “Those are university decisions. Just me personally, I’m always willing and wanting to have conversations with people who want to invest in Washington athletics, whether it’s philanthropy or buying tickets. We’ll always welcome information and welcome conversations, but whatever decisions we make going forward that are monumental, those are university-wide type decisions.” Lots more. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini that he feels “stronger about our place as an independent than maybe I ever have,” and former AD Jack Swarbrick emphasizes the importance of maintaining the Fighting Irish’s voice on the College Football Playoff Management Committee: “I viewed that as among the most important duties of the job. Notre Dame belongs there, but it has to demonstrate its value in the room. I worked hard at that and impressed upon Pete that it was a central element of the job.” As for Notre Dame’s relationship with the ACC for Olympic sports, Bevacqua says he is keeping an eye on the league’s ongoing legal dispute with Florida State and Clemson but is hoping for the best. “We’re all-in on the ACC. Jim Phillips is a wonderful leader, and his commitment to the schools is unyielding. I know he’s going to do everything he can to protect the conference. My hope is Florida State and Clemson remain a part of the ACC. They’re two great members with great sports, and our games across the board are wonderful.” (link)

Howard Men’s Basketball HC Kenny Blakeney is seeking $100M for a 33% stake in the program, according to the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty. In a July interview, Blakeney remarked: “College athletics is full-fledged business now. … I don’t want to have a two-tiered system where we’re not able to compete for the NCAA Tournament or the national championship. And from what I’m hearing right now, that is a real possibility.” Blakeney is pitching the idea to Howard and to private equity groups and, per Dougherty, wants to use the $100M to upgrade the arena and roster, and go independent, allowing the Bison to sign their own TV deal. Blakeney is waiting until he has investors lined up before pitching the idea in earnest to the university and Dougherty adds: “Is this within NCAA rules? The short answer is that, at the moment, Blakeney doesn’t care. Or as one sports economist, granted anonymity to speak about a deal he isn’t involved with, put it: ‘There are always ways to get lawyers to write around issues.’” Dougherty notes several financial experts say a private owner is likely a more tractable path than private equity. “Private equity, they reasoned, is often looking for quick and substantial returns on investment. But a private owner could view Howard as a fun, important project with a potential return in the future.” Asked whether he’s worried about Howard fans wondering what he is thinking, Blakeney says: “I don’t care. … If we’re not going to turn our eye to what’s hitting us in the face, then we’re not looking at this thing the right way.” (link)

The Gazette’s John Steppe profiles Big Ten VP or Football Administration A.J. Edds, who, according to Maryland Football HC Mike Locksley, Tony Petitti “relies on to run the football part of our league.” Steppe notes Petitti specifically mentioned Edds in his opening remarks at Big Ten football media days when describing how the conference has “championed legislation permitting coach-to-player helmet communication and the use of sideline video by student-athletes and coaches.” Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck calls Edds “amazing,” adding: “You talk about somebody who has to take in a ton of information — and not information, opinions and people who believe in that opinion dramatically — and then make sense of all of it. And listen to a bunch of head coaches and then do a lot of other things in the Big Ten. He brings a lot of clarity, I think, to the Big Ten.” Locksley adds: “He played (football) at the highest level. He gets it. To have a football guy that understands what we’re saying as coaches, that’s not always the case.” When Edds started with the Big Ten in 2017, one of his first responsibilities was to serve as sport administrator for field hockey, and Edds admits he was didn’t know much about the sport. Former Iowa AD Gary Barta: “I think there was some skepticism that, ‘Hey, this young professional who played football, does he really care about field hockey? Can he really handle this?’ He quickly proved that he can. No matter what the sport, he was willing to roll up his sleeves and get busy. … He goes that extra mile, and he’s mature beyond his years.” More. (link)

Kentucky has reached an agreement with NCAA enforcement staff on impermissible benefits that occurred in the football program and rules violations involving countable athletically related activities that occurred within the swimming program. UK agreed that the violations in the swimming program supported findings of a failure to monitor and head coach responsibility violations. A Committee on Infractions panel has approved the agreement. One former coach did not participate in the agreement, and that portion of the case will be considered separately by the COI, after which the committee will release its full decision. The agreed-upon violations involve at least 11 football student-athletes receiving payment for work not performed between spring 2021 and March 2022. Additional agreed-upon violations involve the men's and women's swimming program exceeding limits on countable athletically related activities when student-athletes were not provided with required days off and exceeded practice hours for nearly three years. The agreed-upon penalties in this case include two years of probation for the school, a fine and vacation of records of any games in which football student-athletes competed while ineligible, in alignment with the Level II-standard classification for the school.
