As he gets set to officially begin in his new role, College Football Playoff Executive Director Richard Clark tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “My last job in the military … every day we’re thinking about the worst days in America. We’re thinking about getting ready for war. We’re thinking about a day that we hope never happens, but that we have to be ready for it. In this job, I get to wake up every morning and think about football. I get to think about the best days in America, and I know it’s gonna happen and I want it to happen.” As far as what to expect from Clark’s tenure, Air Force AD Nathan Pine says: “Whether you’re a sports writer, a football coach or a university president, he’s going to be open and honest with you, and he’s going to try to do what’s best for the greater good. And honestly, for me, that’s all you can ask for in a leader.” Clark on the future of the CFP: “Right now, it is our job, really it’s our charter, to make sure the playoff is spectacular and that we do that in the right way. But with the changing landscape, clearly we have to stay engaged and understand how college football and college sports in general are changing, even though I don’t have decision authority. … I am responsible to the commissioners to understand the pressures that they’re under and understand what the landscape is bringing, so that when executing this playoff, we’re not caught flat-footed.” (link)

Stanford AD Bernard Muir talks with The Mercury News’ Harold Gutmann about several topics, including the Cardinal’s decision to join the ACC and says: “Part of the experience we promised [student-athletes] is to make sure that they have the best academic, enriching experience and to be able to have a great athletic experience. And we think we can still offer both, but I’m grateful to a number of faculty members who are working with us trying to figure out how we can ease this transition as best we can. … We’re taking less of a media share to start, but we have support of the institution and also support of our alumni base. Our community has been very generous over the years, has created endowments for us that have been quite helpful, and we’re going to have to continue to build those endowments moving forward.” As far as maintaining a broad-based athletic department, Muir asserts that “we’re committed to Olympic excellence. We take great pride in that. … Yes, there are some challenges that we’re working through as it relates to funding and being able to do this in what will be a new environment, but we’re coming off of these Games and taking such great pride across the board with the breadth of our programs, we’re going to try.” Muir on the changing landscape: “We still have a high degree of excellence that we are striving for each and every day, and we think we’re going to be able to continue to do that even within the changing landscape. Is there more work to be done? Yes, but we think we can adapt and come out stronger through all of this.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork maintains the Buckeyes will keep an open mind when it comes to naming rights and tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “So Safelite is exclusive for the field naming, so it’s the field name. But in and around the perimeter of the stadium, adjacencies to the field, things like that. I’ve been saying, ‘Look, we have to put everything on the table.’ Naming rights of the stadium. The jersey patch is a conversation. We have to work with our partner, Nike, in that conversation. If we’re breaking glass right now and we’re going to put the window back, let’s get it all on the table so we can put the window back in the right position. Everything has to be on the table right now to analyze. That doesn’t mean we’re going to do it. It just means let’s at least answer the question. Here’s the value. Is this the right thing to do? Yes or No. If it’s not, OK, fine. If it is, how do we pursue it? Or how does it fit in?” Meanwhile, Bjork suggests OSU could implement different funding tiers for different sports and explains: “What sports are in the financial aid category, what sports are in the revenue share category – all sports can be in the NIL category. We can try to support them for all sports. And then what you have to do is, depending on how it’s funded in those other categories, you have to determine what are the resources needed to support that sport. If we have sports that become walk-on sports where the athletes are walk-ons, do they need as much infrastructure around them? … We don’t have full clarity on that piece yet. That’s part of our analysis. And so when we say shrink, I think the answer is, what do you need to operate that program? And what do you need to operate the program where you don’t impact the student-athlete experience? You still have health and safety. You’re not going backward on that. But the other stuff that we do for our sports, you may have to pull back.” More from Bjork. (link)

The NCAA’s new data dashboard offers several NIL insights, according to On3’s Eric Prisbell, who notes the information displayed as of August 1 includes information submitted by members who elected to share their data from the 2023-24 academic year. Data provided shows that 37.3% of disclosures are from football, 15.4% from men's basketball and 8.2% from women's basketball. The average total earnings per Power Four conference football and men's basketball player was $89,643. The average total earnings per Power Four athlete in sports other than football and men's basketball was $7,504. For Power Four football players, the average athlete earnings per player was $76,740. The average per P4 quarterback earned $151,275, and the average per Group of 5 quarterback earned $20,961. For P4 QBs, the average total earnings per athlete for autograph deals was $201,203. For social media-focused deals that figure is $258,218. For P4 men's basketball players, the average earnings per athlete was $171,272. For P4 women's basketball players it was $16,222. (link)

Profound Sports, which primarily serves as an NIL agency, is launching a claims service through which student-athletes would be offered an upfront payment from the House settlement through private equity and then give the rights to collect on the 10-year payment over to Profound. The agency would take a 15% cut. Profound Founder Luis Davila tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “College athletics is evolving before our eyes and our organization is poised to be a custodian and negotiator for NIL proceeds for current and former student-athletes. I have experience in class action settlement recovery for Wall Street shareholders and now we have built a similar platform for ‘athlete shareholders.'” Davila says the agency has entered into partnership talks with multiple Power 4 schools. The new rule allowing analysts, quality control coaches and others to provide on-field instruction “changes everything,” according to Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney. Oklahoma HC Brent Venables adds: “It’s fantastic from a development standpoint in helping young coaches develop in the profession, getting opportunities, creating value for themselves, having experience through it. It does give you another lens and another set of eyes, and maybe, again, for you as a staff to be a little more efficient. And I think ultimately the players, if done the right way, will be benefactors of that.” The Athletic’s Seth Emerson notes that with athletic departments looking to find ways to control costs in the coming years, there are some questions about whether programs will continue to employ large numbers of coaches. However, Emerson notes that “cutting these jobs wouldn’t make a huge dent, football is the cash cow, and athletic directors don’t want to risk losing any competitive edges there.” Plus, as Swinney pointed out, it’s not costing anything extra. “We haven’t added staff, we have the same amount of staff that we’ve always had, but they just haven’t been able to coach on the field, within the rules. They’ve been able to do everything else — they can recruit, they can help the coaches support the coaches and game plan, that kind of stuff. But they were limited as far as practice. So what it’ll do, it will make you more efficient. It’ll create hopefully a little more scrutiny, a little more attention to details across the board. Because everybody can coach. Everybody’s got a voice.” (link)

Some former Colorado football student-athletes describe a culture under HC Deion Sanders beset by violence, guns and gambling, with one anonymous student-athlete saying: "It's like a real-life Grand Theft Auto video game. There are many distractions with fights, guns, and money floating around. The environment is unlike any I've come from before.” Football Scoop’s Doug Samuels: “Other anonymous claims include the bullying of former five-star freshman Cormani McClain, who was often publicly criticized by Prime for his immaturity and later transferred to Florida, and another stated that another highly rated freshman (Jordan Seaton) was pressured into fighting a lineman where both exchanged blows that left both parties bloodied in an attempt to prove their ‘manhood.’ Another instance involved a $10K gambling debt between backup quarterback Colton Allen and wide receiver Kaleb Mathis, the son of CU defensive backs coach Robert Mathis. When Kaleb reportedly refused to pay the debt, he was beat up in the locker room where players and coaches allegedly witnessed the assault. The report also shares a screenshot of Chidozie Nwankwo's celebratory livestream, who while announcing his commitment to Colorado, had a handgun appear in the background of his stream.” More. (link)

Some Utah State donors say they will withhold donations following the university’s decision to part ways with Football HC Blake Anderson and former AVP/Deputy AD for External Affairs Jerry Bovee. Alumnus Tom Grimmett, who has given about $500K to the athletic department over the years, says he will no longer donate due to his lack of comfort with Aggies AD Diana Sabau’s leadership. “I’m not going to do that again until I feel more comfortable with who’s in charge up there. I think ultimately it’s going to damage the reputation of the university, and it’ll take a long time for it to work itself through it.” Grimmett also says when he met with Sabau earlier this year he told her he suspected there would be pressure from a new administration to clean house. “I just wanted to make a comment to kind of tell her that what was going on was pretty transparent. ... She’s been given walking and marching orders, and she’s going to do it.” Meanwhile, donor Chris Seibert is supportive of Sabau and USU’s decision to reset the culture. “I think there’s a lot of layers to this. But ... I don’t think you can sweep this sort of thing under the rug. They made a really difficult decision to do it when they did. I want to give them credit there.” (link); Bovee today officially filed a grievance with the university and says in a statement: "I recognize that varying accounts and allegations have surfaced regarding the activities that led to decisions that were made. Nonetheless, I believe the truth will prevail, and my proven legacy and reputation, founded in integrity and honesty, will be restored. I trust that the University will consider my grievance, and in good faith, they will do the right thing. At this time, I will not be speaking publicly on this matter to allow the University to focus on this process and find a fair resolution." (link)

Providence raised $10.7M in the fiscal year that concluded June 30. The Friars also report generating $8.5M in revenue through ticket sales for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey and Late Night Madness, surpassing last year’s record of $6.8M. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team reports a 99% season ticket renewal rate for the upcoming season. (link)

The Orange County Register’s Luca Evans reports that Jeff McKay, a co-founder of USC-focused Conquest Collective, has joined House of Victory collective as a board member. “With McKay’s move, Conquest Collective will shut down, leaving House of Victory and the TOMMY Group — an organization that has been quiet of late — as USC’s only NIL collectives. … And last week, according to [a] source, various high-level figures in USC athletics — [Trojans AD Jen] Cohen, [Football HC Lincoln] Riley, even USC basketball coach Eric Musselman — pushed hard to integrate McKay into House of Victory. The goal for McKay’s arrival, sources indicated, is to continue building donor relationships to add to House of Victory’s fundraising base.” Also from Evans: “Since her arrival at USC last summer, athletic director Jen Cohen — both in internal meetings and external communication — has tried to centralize House of Victory as the primary collective for donor funds, distributed to athletes in the form of contracts structured in part around event appearances. … A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Friday that House of Victory has over $12M available in NIL funding for the 2024-25 year. That number is still a cut below a program like Ohio State, whose NIL collective, athletic director Ross Bjork told Yahoo Sports in late July, had distributed over $20M to football players this past season.” (link)

The Dow fell to a session low of more than 1,000 points today amid fears of a U.S. recession. The Nasdaq lost 3.43%, and the S&P 500 slid 3.0%. In addition to Friday’s disappointing July jobs report, investors are concerned that the Federal Reserve is behind in cutting interest rates to bolster an economic slowdown, with the central bank choosing instead to keep rates at the highest in two decades last week. Tech shares were among the worst performers with Nvidia tumbling 6.4% and Apple falling more than 4% after Berkshire Hathaway cut its Apple stake in half. Global markets also tumbled, as the 12.4% loss on the Nikkei marked its the worst day since the “Black Monday” of 1987 hit Wall Street. (link)

Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore “could face a show-cause penalty and possibly a suspension for allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in October 2023,” according to ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel, who report a draft of the Notice of Allegations states that the texts were later recovered via "device imaging" and that Moore "subsequently produced them to enforcement staff." Moore is accused of committing a Level 2 violation. A U-M spokesperson tells Murphy and Thamel: "Our athletic department and university continue to cooperate with the NCAA regarding our ongoing investigation. We do not have an update to share regarding its status at this time." According to the draft NOA, which could change, former Wolverines HC Jim Harbaugh, AC Chris Partridge, and staffers Denard Robinson and Stalions are accused of committing Level 1 violations. Partridge, former AC Steve Clinkscale and Robinson are also accused of providing impermissible benefits to recruits in 2023, including paying for a recruit's meal and providing recruits with team gear. Clinkscale is also accused of helping a recruit get verified on Instagram and for writing a $100 check for a golf charity event that was run by a recruit's father.” (link); The AP’s Ralph Russo notes “case is still likely months — at least — from being resolved. NCAA policy gives schools 90 days to respond to a notice of allegations. After a response, the school would be scheduled for a hearing in front of the NCAA’s committee on infractions, though a negotiated resolution would still be possible. … I guess there is also a world where Michigan and the NCAA play nice and hammer things out to get it in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible, but right now: unlikely.” (link, link)
|
Sportico’s Michael McCann explains that “Michigan and those persons accused by the NCAA over the Stalions scandal could explore legal action against the NCAA. … If Moore, Harbaugh and/or Michigan contest the NCAA’s findings, they could sue the organization for breach of contract and antitrust violations. The basic legal argument would be the NCAA has misinterpreted its own rules and the NCAA and member conferences and schools conspired in anticompetitive ways to wrongly punish the Wolverines. In any legal action, the limitations of the NCAA and its enforcement staff could become key. The NCAA is a private organization, not the government. It thus lacks subpoena power and can’t compel testimony. … Those who speak with the NCAA while not under oath also face no risk of perjury charges should they knowingly lie. Some could be motivated to direct blame onto others to protect themselves. Historically the NCAA has fended off legal challenges over interpretation of rules since, as a private membership organization, courts normally accord high deference.” However, McCann continues, the “NCAA hasn’t exactly been on a winning streak in court. The last few years have been disastrous there for the NCAA, which hopes to resolve antitrust class action lawsuits involving player compensation through a settlement that would pay players billions of dollars and transform the upper-echelon of college sports into a pro sports model.” Lots more. Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill talks about his appointment to the Men’s Basketball Committee: “One, it’s good visibility for the Sun Belt. The selection is about the respect folks have for the conference. It’s a little less about me, and a little more about how people view our conference. It helps with visibility there.” Gill adds: “At the end of the day, I don’t speak about Sun Belt teams and I can’t vote on Sun Belt teams, so there’s really no direct linkage in that regard. But I think, indirectly, it gives you a lot of insight. It gives you the opportunity to talk a lot of basketball, discuss a lot of basketball strategy and figure out what’s good and what’s bad. That information is really helpful. … I can bring that back to the conference. We’re in the second year of our basketball strategic plan that I think is bearing some fruit. But we have a long way to go.” (link)

Grand Canyon AD Jamie Boggs joins AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer to talk about the impact of NIL on the future of the industry, the ongoing “professionalization” of college athletics and how involved ADs should be with NIL in general and with NIL collectives specifically. Boggs also shares insight into how NIL is changing the way she assesses the success of a coach and program and how NIL is changing investment in basketball programs at all levels. Boggs on whether schools will eventually have to choose between focusing investments on football or basketball: “For certain schools football is also about enrollment. It could be enrollment, it could be about fundraising. I can't imagine in the state of Texas [a world] where football isn't a part of the conversation because it's important to the state, to the people in Texas. So it's different from school to school. I can see instances where if we’re seeing some of the proposals that are out there, there might not be a choice. … Basketball, there is – I can't say a dollar-for-dollar return – but there is an exposure return, there is a TV return, there is a return there. So, I think there are going to be schools that are going to be positioned that they have to make that decision.” Boggs also remarks that ADs need to strike a balance regarding their involvement with NIL: “Obviously we have to be there to make donors or potential donors aware of the opportunity, but you don't want to cross the line where you're so involved that it becomes a question.” Full interview on ADU. Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale tells On3’s Andrew Graham that student-athletes have “been conditioned in this new NIL Era to think about what they can get financially while they can get it. And that has been a distraction from them thinking about, ‘Well, when I’m 23 and beyond, there’s a lot of things I’m gonna need to get a job, to have healthcare from beating up my body like this, to be mentally stable, et cetera.” Therefore, while revenue sharing is an important component of the House settlement, College Football Players Association Founder/Executive Director Jason Stahl says more issues need to be addressed: “When I talk with current players, and I talk with former players when it comes to football, especially guys who are getting paid now, it’s like the money doesn’t – it’s not the moving issue to get guys involved in organizing. The moving issue in football is player health, like 100%.” Cavale expects the arrival of revenue sharing to produce a generation of football players more engaged with these issues: “And once the athletes negotiate what they’re gonna make from the schools with them, I think that will be the mechanism for which an organization like us can not only get them the best financial deal but make sure that all of these other categories you’re mentioning are also negotiated properly as benefits offered by the school to the athlete.” Meanwhile, Nebraska AD Troy Dannen and Michigan State AD Alan Haller are open to doing more for student-athletes moving forward. Haller: “I do think it needs to transition more into what happens after the players leave because this is really only three, four, five years of their lives. And they’re gonna make some pretty good money, what happens after this? And the transition into emotional care for them, mental health, caring for their bodies, and then also the opportunity to continue their education and finish their degrees.” (link)

The Toledo Blade’s Dave Briggs asks eight MAC ADs, each of whom was granted anonymity, a series of questions about the state of the league, including what it will look like in 20 years, and one AD says: “I’m not sure it exists, and that’s unrelated to anything in the MAC’s control. The forces of nature are hitting us in a way where either we’re going to be sport by sport rather than a part of conferences like the MAC that are all-inclusive to all sports and/or all of this consolidation at the top (the Power Four football conferences) means that the next level (the Group of Five leagues) will be more centrally governed than the conference model.” Asked to sum up their thoughts on the addition of Massachusetts in one word, one AD says: “WTF? We didn’t talk through it much. The presidents had all the conversations, but when you ask them about it and you start digging into specifics, they had no clue what questions to ask. It’s going to cost us half a million more in travel.” Another adds: “Opportunistic. Quite frankly, I didn’t mind it. I know some of my peers share an opposite opinion, but, from the standpoint of enhancing the brand of the league, adding a school like UMass helps.” What one rule/piece of legislation would ADs most like to see for the greater good of college athletics? One AD replies: “The antitrust exemption. We need to create better governance. We’ve lost our ability to govern our organization and set rules that are reasonable for the health and wealth and safety of our programs, and keep an academic focus.” Lots more. (link)

Alabama A&M AD Paul Bryant talks about what changes he’s noticed during his first two years in the position: “I think the mindset is changing, the culture is changing from just being out there to competing to know we're going to compete to win. And I think the fan – I mean we had a sold out homecoming last year, something has never been done. I think they're gaining interest into really what we're doing in the athletics department. We have a model academically. Now we're trying to create that model athletically.” (link)

On the latest episode of The Career Hustle, Old Dominion Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations and Student-Athlete Welfare Ron Moses sits down with Connect/CSA's Steph Garcia Cichosz to share more about his journey to a senior leadership role with the Monarchs, including his time serving in the U.S. Army and his early career stops at Western Kentucky and Kansas State. Moses discusses the value of learning soft skills en route to a leadership role, skills he learned through the mentorship of Kent State AD Randale Richmond. Moses also reflects on the impact of participating in the NCAA's Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute and discusses how he cultivates balance in his life. Moses emphasizes the importance of building relationships: “Don’t ignore anybody. Talk to everybody. You have no clue. A lot of people I worked with…there are several head coaches, several OCs…and I remember them when they were volunteers when they were GAs. … You never know where people are going to go. Network, be intentional, stay in touch with everybody.” Also from Moses: "Don't just pick a logo – pick a job you like, pick a location you like, pick a boss." More on Connect. (link)
