D3 Datacast’s Matt and Zac Snyder dive deep on the new NPI, how the formula works, initial dial settings and much more. As coaches or administrators may work to see how games or teams on the schedule may impact their NPI or which wins stay to count into their NPI, as a reminder, each game produces its own game NPI, with a team’s NPI to be the sum of weighted NPI games divided by net games played. Further, in general, the calculation will drop wins that lower your NPI and losses that raise your NPI. Matt Snyder notes it can get complicated “because of this fact, every team’s NPI output is an input into every other team, every other opponent’s NPI calculation … so this is an iterative formula. You have to run the numbers and then see how those numbers change and then take the NPI output and you put it back in for all of these ONPI inputs because that’s your strength of schedule is what your team’s rating is and then you have to run the data again.” Using their work, the Snyders note there would be three Men’s Basketball selection differences in each of the last three seasons. Asked if coaches should consider scheduling differently, Matt Snyder says no. “The little bit longer answer is yes you can consider making some different scheduling choices, but I think the longer answer is no, you should really be mostly scheduling the same as you were. As we've seen, playing good games helps you. You get the quality win bonus. You get those big numbers on your resume. You still want to be playing strong teams. … This new system does provide a pathway for teams that under the old system had lower strengths of schedule to get into pool C consideration. Now I think though that mostly manifests in the way that your conference schedule played out or does play out. Maybe you have some weaker teams who aren't really competitive and dragged your whole SOS down, I think you're still going to need to look outside of conference to get those strong games. But maybe similar to the old system, if you play in a really strong conference, to get into the tournament, you maybe don't have to go out of conference all that much, but it depends on where you want to be.” Zac Snyder adds: “I think it frees up coaches to not have to worry about all those arbitrary lines across the regions and whether or not they’re going to get as much credit as they actually deserve for a win.” Tons more. Sportico’s Daniel Libit believes the NCAA has taken a blow with the loss of Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who sponsored legislation earlier this year that would prevent college athletes from obtaining employee status, as he has officially lost his primary race to state Sen. John McGuire following a court-certified recount. Libit: “A former college wrestler and athletic administrator at Liberty University, he introduced in May the ‘Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act,’ which would not only forbid college athletes from being deemed employees of their schools, but also their conferences and the NCAA. By extension, the bill would prevent athletes from joining a union, as the Dartmouth men’s basketball team did earlier this year. … Last month, an amended version of H.R. 8534 was reported out by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and placed on the union calendar of bills that are eligible for floor consideration. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has yet to take it up or publicly address the issue of athlete employee status, having instead focused on transgender athletes competing in NCAA women’s sports. In late June, Johnson hosted a panel discussion along with college swimmer Riley Gaines. With November’s presidential election close at hand, it is hard to imagine H.R. 8534 going any further this cycle. Good’s absence from Congress next year is unlikely to have much bearing on the ultimate fate of the Congressional debate over college athlete compensation, which has grown increasingly partisan as the subject has moved beyond NIL rights to those of employee status and unionization.” (link)

The Dow fell to a session low of more than 1,000 points today amid fears of a U.S. recession. The Nasdaq lost 3.43%, and the S&P 500 slid 3.0%. In addition to Friday’s disappointing July jobs report, investors are concerned that the Federal Reserve is behind in cutting interest rates to bolster an economic slowdown, with the central bank choosing instead to keep rates at the highest in two decades last week. Tech shares were among the worst performers with Nvidia tumbling 6.4% and Apple falling more than 4% after Berkshire Hathaway cut its Apple stake in half. Global markets also tumbled, as the 12.4% loss on the Nikkei marked its the worst day since the “Black Monday” of 1987 hit Wall Street. (link)
