Utah State AD Diana Sabau spoke to the media during the first day of football training camp: “I'm looking very much forward to changing that culture and to having improvements in our young men … on the field (and) both academically and in the community. [...] It's how the institution, alumni and the community need the change. It is getting and modernizing our athletics department to current social standards — applicable, acceptable behaviors — and being in alignment with the values of this community and our institution. This is not what I want, this is for the greater good as one institution. [...] When you are a Title IX reporting official at a university, that is a job that has severe and specific parameters. And it must be taken seriously.” (link)

Colorado Deputy AD Jason DePaepe talks to the Boulder Daily Camera about one of the more mundane, but arduous steps of transitioning to a new conference…replacing all the Pac-12 logos around campus to the Big 12 league logo. DePaepe: “We made it a point to talk to everybody about, ‘Hey, look, as you’re walking through and you see a logo that you think we might have forgot (let us know).’ We had to start a list somewhere. So this is kind of where we started. We kind of just started looking around at everything.” DePaepe also notes advances in technology have certainly helped expedite the process: “Now we can just peel the sticker off and then we’ll put the new logo down. The technology with putting stickers on courts now under the top coat has advanced and there’s groups that can do it really well.” (link)

Florida professor Molly Harry examines former UC Davis AD & current Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue’s 2019 AthleticDirectorU article “Rising Expenses in College Athletics and the Non-Profit Paradox,” in which Blue noted three economic components that inform athletic directors’ financial decisions: a non-profit organizational structure, zero-sum competition, and accelerating revenue. “He concluded these three factors pressurize expenses, increasing departmental spending. And because of the design of college athletics, in 2019, expenses were allocated to two areas: increases in coach and staff salaries, and investments in player support enhancements and facilities.” Since Blue’s article, Harry points out that two areas which differentiated college sports from pro sports – ownership profits and increases in player salaries – have started to erode due to the House settlement and the prospect of private equity. “So, athletic departments and sport leaders may not just be making financial decisions based on the non-profit ‘mission’ as Blue sees it, but also potentially on the return to private equity lenders. Such decisions also align with a more for-profit rather than non-profit model.” Meanwhile, Harry posits that coaching salaries and player support enhancements may decrease. “This may be necessary to meet the significant demands in the other expense categories.” Harry concludes: “Blue concluded his piece in 2019 noting, ‘financial decision-making in college sports has been perfectly rational within the structures of the current system.’ Blue’s system, however, no longer exists – except for the rising expenses.” (link)

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg catches up with several football student-athletes and coaches to learn how they’re fitting the release of EA Sports College Football 25 into their schedules. Arizona State HC Kenny Dillingham notes that “every kid's going to be up until 4 a.m. playing this game. We can tell them not to, but they will.” So, ASU has leaned into the activity, including putting a video game room in the facility. Furthermore, gaming is encouraged when the players head home, especially if they’re playing together, and Dillingham says: "A lot of people say video games are bad; I actually kind of disagree. I want our guys to do anything that's competitive. If it's going out on Saturday night to a nightclub or going out to a party, or if it's having four or five guys over and hanging out and playing [College Football 25] all night, give me the latter 10 times out of 10. They're competing, they're building chemistry, they're hanging out together. So I really try to embrace what guys like to do with each other." Penn State HC James Franklin agrees: "The more our guys can be talking about football, watching college football, practicing college football, playing college football, or the game, I think it's good for us. ... Play it as much as you can and want to." Wisconsin HC Luke Fickell, however, may adopt the same approach his wife takes with their two sons, who are allowed to game only on Fridays. “We'll use it in some ways so that we can compete and have some fun with it, but they all understand ... once it comes, yeah, you can play a little bit, but you better be in bed, you better be sleeping." UCLA Baseball AC David Berg departed from the school after a university investigation concluded that he had “by a preponderance of the evidence … slapped a student-athlete” last October. The investigation was conducted while Berg was on paid leave. He was suspended for a month, docked $10K in salary, suspended for seven games in February and required to undergo training in violence prevention. (link)

Playfly CEO Michael Schreiber joins Forbes senior writer Jabari Young to discuss the changing sports media landscape and says Nebraska, in signing a 15-year, $300M deal with Playfly, recognized early on that the only certainty in college sports moving forward was change. “They were willing to push the envelope, they committed a whole bunch of flexibilities going forward in terms of allowing us to be innovative and trying new things. … So we saw all of that innovation of flexibility and we said that goes into our business model, that goes into our growth plan. And you can see when we build our models how we're going to exceed that big number that you referenced and we're going to exceed that significantly not only for our own benefit because we get a revenue share, but for Nebraska's benefit because they get a revenue share over that big number, too.” Schreiber cites last year’s volleyball game inside Memorial Stadium as an example of Playfly and Nebraska partnering for an innovative revenue-generation solution. “We had flyovers, we had new sponsors come in. That type of innovation is how you get paid back for those things. And you need a partner who’s willing to do that, and Nebraska was that partner.” On his transition from CEO to Executive Chairman and the appointment of President Craig Sloan to CEO, Schreiber says: “It allows me to step back into that business-building mode that I started in when we were in startup mode…coming in and thinking about things, about our next growth opportunities, more m&a strategies, thinking about capital markets and all these elements that are going to make our company continue to grow as fast as we have in the first four years.” Full interview. CollegeAD reports on the financial aspects of the Playfly-Nebraska partnership, which is scheduled to pay the Huskers a guarantee of $12.75M in 2024-25, with annual escalators of $750K through 2031-32 when the guarantee will be $18M with subsequent $800K annual bumps until the end of the deal in 2037-38. Further, the annual royalty rate for UNL is 72.50% with a threshold of $18.85M in 2024-25, moves to 75% in 2026-27 ($21.112M threshold), then 77.5% in 2029-30 ($24.375M), 80% in 2032-33 ($27.1M up to $32.64M in the last year of the deal in 2037-28). A sellout crowd of 77,559 fans watched Liverpool and Manchester United complete their preseason U.S. tours with the first-ever soccer game hosted at South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium. Tickets for the game sold out in less than two days and were bought by fans from all 50 states. Gamecocks’ AD Ray Tanner: “It’s a showcase event, no question about it. (We’re) on ESPN tonight and they’re talking about the University of South Carolina and Columbia. We have a great environment here for football, but we can do other events. … So, there’s opportunities and when you get to showcase what you have, people pay attention.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How can core values help with decisions in the workplace?
Raymond Harrison, Senior Associate Athletics Director at NC State, discusses how core values and purpose are integral to how he navigates his career. From deciding whether or not to take a job, to deciding whether or not to hire someone, Harrison checks on value alignment throughout most of his decision making processes.
• you don't teach values, you hire values
• you live life forward but you understand it looking backward
• values of the organization should be used to guide decisions within the organization
With patience as a core value, he strives to keep emotion out of his decisions. In terms of his personal life, he strives to live imperfectly in front of his children. One of his primary reasons for being in the college athletics industry is to ensure young people use the student-athlete experience to create better opportunities in their lives. 🎧 on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Big Chair Developments…
+ CollegeAD indicates Houston will finalize its pool of candidates next week “with virtual interviews to follow.” (link); For those hoping to be in the mix, here is the D1.dossier for the Cougars opening. (link)
+ Illinois State is planning to press go on its national search for a new AD “in the coming weeks.” (link); Again, get a leg up on the field with the use of the Illinois State D1.dossier. (link)
+ The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Portland State is ready for use by those of you interested in leading the Vikings. San Diego AD Kimya Massey: “D1.dossiers was a great tool for the process, really allowed me to obtain a strong sense of what the mission and values of the institution were as well as if they aligned with my values. It also gave me a wider perspective on how the budget was formulated, staff size and retention and the past and current success of the programs. I really appreciated the in-depth information regarding the campus structure and organization as well. I’d highly recommend reviewing the dossiers going into the interview to best prepare yourself for not only the questions you will answer, but also to ensure that you are truly committed to the job and feel you have a strong pulse on whether or not you can be successful in this position.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner updates on the trajectory of Oregon State & Washington State: “With Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould running point, the schools are in discussions with multiple conferences — in both the Power Four and Group of Five — about strategic partnerships that could take effect as early as the 2025 season, according to an industry source. Those discussions, the source added, are not specific to WSU and OSU potentially joining one of the power leagues, although that option ‘definitely’ has not been dismissed. Instead, the conversations are wide-ranging in nature and include possible scheduling alliances or ‘creative ways to work together’ that could provide ‘a stepping stone to the future,’ the source added.” Wilner goes on to report the Big 12 is “not interested,” per another industry source. More: “Some form of affiliation with the Mountain West is likely, but given other uncertainties, (WSU and OSU) could have other options to consider.” (link)

Wilner also breaks down what Cal and Stanford will be contributing back to the ACC for their first nine years as members. Wilner notes that while Stanford wasn’t bound to disclose its membership agreement, the terms likely are identical to those in Cal’s deal, which stipulates the Bears will give back “67% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during each of the first 7 years following the Effective Date; 30% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during the 8th year following the Effective Date; and 25% of distributions of Media Revenue to Cal during the 9th year following the Effective Date.” Wilner subsequently points out that “Cal’s athletic department relies on roughly $30M annually from central campus in order to balance the books. Stanford’s fiscal issues are such that it eliminated 11 sports programs in 2020, only to reinstate them after a severe backlash. And last year, the Cardinal reported a $21M operating shortfall despite $12M in university support that was booked as revenue. … Hotline projections show each of the ACC’s long-standing members will receive $497.5M over the contract term, while Cal and Stanford will take home $302.1M apiece. Each school is $195.4M behind its competition over the contract term. … Is there a plan to offset the nine-figure disparity? Details are sparse on both campuses.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit believes the NCAA has taken a blow with the loss of Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who sponsored legislation earlier this year that would prevent college athletes from obtaining employee status, as he has officially lost his primary race to state Sen. John McGuire following a court-certified recount. Libit: “A former college wrestler and athletic administrator at Liberty University, he introduced in May the ‘Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act,’ which would not only forbid college athletes from being deemed employees of their schools, but also their conferences and the NCAA. By extension, the bill would prevent athletes from joining a union, as the Dartmouth men’s basketball team did earlier this year. … Last month, an amended version of H.R. 8534 was reported out by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and placed on the union calendar of bills that are eligible for floor consideration. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has yet to take it up or publicly address the issue of athlete employee status, having instead focused on transgender athletes competing in NCAA women’s sports. In late June, Johnson hosted a panel discussion along with college swimmer Riley Gaines. With November’s presidential election close at hand, it is hard to imagine H.R. 8534 going any further this cycle. Good’s absence from Congress next year is unlikely to have much bearing on the ultimate fate of the Congressional debate over college athlete compensation, which has grown increasingly partisan as the subject has moved beyond NIL rights to those of employee status and unionization.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White sits down with VolQuest for a number of updates. Notably on the state of the industry: “Disappointing to see us constantly in litigation. We obviously had our ridiculous set of circumstances with the NCAA and their lack of ability to kind of, what’s the term? See the forest through the trees. We need to be more proactive as an industry and accept the realities of where we are and come up with some rational, just common sense plans and guardrails around all things NIL revenue sharing, whatever you want to call it. [...] For people that do what I do and for our coaches, it’s a 365 day a year problem. I don’t know if there’s ever been a time as hard as it is right now to work in college sports. And we went from Covid to this legal stuff, and the lack of leadership at the NCAA from the onset and the lack of real direction from anybody, has put us all in where it’s a moving target. [...] We need the people in leadership positions nationally to start to do some of those things too. We’re having a hard time letting go of the past, but our coaches have to do it.” On Neyland Stadium’s south end zone upgrades: “Yeah, it’s on track. It’ll look like the renderings we put out. We’re gonna make sure it has the iconic look that we see on the west side of our stadium. That is awesome. We need more of the stadium and eventually all of the stadium to look like that.” White also says there’s no timeline yet on construction related to the entertainment district to adjoin Neyland, but figuring out a solution to parking is a key next step. As for a potential corporate logo on UT’s football field: “We are pushing corporate sponsorships hard. We’ve more than doubled how much is coming in through the Vol Network in the last three years. We’re working on our licensing numbers. We’re up to No. 2 or No. 3 in the country in licensing right now from way below. We were in the teens, I think. Our licensing numbers have just about doubled too. We’re trying to maximize every revenue stream possible, especially the ones that don’t come out of (fans) wallet. And we’re not gonna ask them to pay above and beyond what our competition is paying. But we have to be aware of what the market is across the Southeastern Conference.” Lots more. (link, link)

Noting that this is the first year since 2018 the Aggies are not on NCAA probation or in an active investigation, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts updated the A&M system board of regents this week on the state of the athletic department. Reducing the administrative staff by 18 employees has saved roughly $2M and there is “probably more room for additional staff reductions.” Among other business-related updates, Alberts said a PNL was run on all programs, and football is the only profitable sport. Outside events, including hosting at Kyle Field in June the Mexico vs. Brazil soccer match and the George Strait concert, brought in $6.5M in profit. The cumulative GPA this past year was the highest ever, at just under 3.1 while the GSR is among the highest in department history at 87%, a number Alberts wants to see reach at least 90%. In other news from College Station, Alberts issued an apology for a typo on the McNeese State football game printed tickets, “Season tickets were delivered last week and, unfortunately, the McNeese game contains a graphic design error, [returning QB] Conner Weigman's first name was misspelled. We have apologized to Conner and his family for the mistake, and we are actively establishing a more robust proofing process moving forward to prevent future errors.” The tickets are still valid for entry and at the end of the season TAMU will mail a complimentary commemorative season ticket to all season ticket holders. Kentucky President Eli Capilouto yesterday addressed some of the allegations against former Cats Swimming HC Lars Jorgensen and alleged insufficient action by school officials: “The most serious of the allegations were only known to us at the time a lawsuit was filed by two former staff members and after the coach had been dismissed.” Capilouto added that he and AD Mitch Barnhart, "are sickened by allegations that members of the UK community suffered harm because of the actions of someone entrusted to protect and empower our student athletes and staff.” As far as the sexual misconduct allegations against Jorgensen, Capilouto noted: “We will not tolerate abuse, and neither should anyone who is a member of our community. The responsibility in these cases is for our athletics administration to report allegations as soon as they become aware of them. Our Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity Office (IEEO) is to investigate those allegations and make recommendations for potential remedies. Those processes are being followed at UK. But we need to go beyond that.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge gets feedback from coaches around the nation on how a significant increase in scholarships & a hard roster cap will impact the sport. One unnamed coach: “I think you are going to see a lot of schools at varying levels. It’s like a salary cap at 34, but you’ll see teams at 34, some at 11.7, and some at 6 now that will stay there. And everything in between. They’ll tell their coaches to do the best you can with what we can provide.” Another: “Many coaches will have a hard time narrowing it down to 34 before the fall if that’s the rule. Starting the fall with only 34 kids will be hard on everybody because there are always a couple of injuries or a kid who decides he doesn’t want to play anymore. You may look at schools starting the spring with 30 healthy players.” LSU HC Jay Johnson: “I think the beginning of the school year is good. It puts more accountability on evaluation and bringing the right people into your program. I’m comfortable with that. I’d like to see you declare your roster on say, August 20 – the same day for everybody.” (link)

If you’ve been wondering who in the Idaho athletics department carved the Potato State Trophy, which will be awarded annually to the winner of the Idaho-Idaho State football rivalry game, Extra Points’ Matt Brown has the details. How did the trophy come to be? Vandals Asst. AD for Brand Engagement & Digital Strategy Jerek Wolcott explains: “I grabbed a piece of Douglas fir, just a firewood round, and my angle grinder and started working on it. Just kept going on it until it looked like a potato. … I would say I spent probably 10 to 12 hours on the carving, getting the initial log down into the potato form. You think of potatoes as kind of like an oval. But it's really, really elongated, if you actually look at a potato. My first one was way too fat. I had to keep working on it and really get in there and get some wood off of it. And then, of course, you can't really clamp it down because it's such a weird shape. So I'm holding it with my legs on the ground in my backyard, because I didn't want it in my garage getting dust everywhere. So it was really kind of a ridiculous thing.” More from Brown. (link)
