JohnCanzano.com’s namesake talks with stakeholders at San Diego State and SMU about how they’re operating as they continue to wait and wonder whether a Pac-12 invitation is forthcoming. Aztecs AD Wicker notes: “Our coaches are allowed to say that there may be an opportunity coming, but as of today we are proud members of the Mountain West Conference or the few other leagues we have teams in.” Interestingly, Canzano points out that from both programs only Wicker would go on the record, with one SMU staffer calling the situation “too delicate.” Canzano explains that SMU “apparently caught a little heat” after Commissioner Kliavkoff’s visit to campus in early February was leaked, with one Pac-12 source saying: “We know the leak didn’t come from our side.” Canzano: “No telling if the leak actually matters. … In the end, media-rights value is the love language of college athletics.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner sets out to answer the question of whether SMU brings media value to the Pac-12, noting that part of figuring that out requires determining whether the Mustangs are an institutional fit for the league. To answer that, Crakes Media’s namesake explains that even though SMU is down in the pecking order of needle-moving sports in the Dallas market, that isn’t the only criterion for calculating value. “UCLA football is way down the L.A. market, just like Rutgers is way down the New York market. (Networks) value what their most important customers want. And SMU is worth something going into a major conference.” Ultimately, Crakes is doubtful the Mustangs are worth an additional $3M per school per year, pegging the number instead at about $1.5M. “Then in the next deal, they become an incremental chip on the table. … But if you end up doing something like merging with the ACC down the road, you have the Dallas market, which is nice.” (link)

The Athletic’s Staples pens a strongly worded riposte to Notre Dame President Jenkins and AD Swarbrick’s New York Times op-ed, asserting the piece “cloaked itself in nostalgia while nakedly asking the U.S. government to codify a system that will allow schools and their executives and coaches to enjoy all the benefits of running a couple of major American sports with none of the pesky annoyances like paying market value for the talent or negotiating with the workforce. … Instead of trying to find a way to pay revenue-sport athletes their market value as athletes, school administrators complain about the name, image and likeness system foisted upon them by state legislatures who grew tired of seeing schools break the Sherman Act in an effort to keep anyone from providing athletes anything beyond tuition, room and board. Swarbrick and Jenkins are correct that this did result in a sham system, but they conveniently leave out the reason.” Lots more. (link)

UCF provides an update on Mission XII which includes new renderings of the football campus, now known as the Sharon & Marc Hagle Gateway. The complex includes a new building to house FB operations, meeting rooms and coaches offices, new FB locker room, weight room, training room and other team facilities. Knights AD Mohajir also notes that reports of a significant budget surplus do not paint a full picture of the Knights’ financial realities by leaving out certain expenses and COVID-related debt. Mohajir projects the operating budget to grow from $72M to roughly $90M for the first year the Knights are in the Big 12 and compares that to the average budget of $110M for the six incumbent public schools in the conference. “UCF Athletics needs to aggressively continue to self-generate revenue. … With increasing support of Orlando and Knight Nation, we will need to get our operating budget to the top third of the league to equip us with the resources to compete for championships.” Full video. OpenAI now supports plug-ins that allow ChatGPT to tap new sources of information, including the web and third-party sites. Until now, ChatGPT was limited in that it could only pull data from up to the end of 2021, and OpenAI says says plug-ins will not only allow ChatGPT to browse the web but also interact with specific websites, potentially turning the system into a wide-ranging interface for all sorts of services and sites. There are some safety concerns about the bot’s ability to interact with other websites on a user’s behalf, but OpenAI maintains it has implemented “several safeguards,” including limiting availability of the plug-ins to a very small number of people to start and progressing iteratively. Notre Dame President Jenkins and AD Swarbrick pen an op-ed for the New York Times in which they “call on universities to reaffirm that student-athletes are students first and to ensure that their athletic programs serve the schools’ broader educational mission, not the other way around. We call on the NCAA and athletic conferences to set policies that support that goal. And we urge Congress to protect the NCAA’s ability to regulate the competition for new players to ensure it remains fair and above board.” Jenkins and Swarbrick also contend the NCAA should set limits on the number of days away from campus a team can require, create a “national medical trust fund to benefit all student-athletes who are injured while playing, regardless of sport, school size or standing,” and “set a policy so that players who leave school to go pro have the option to return.” Further, they submit that the NFL should create a minor league alternative for players who have no interest in college and that the NBA should eliminate the one-and-done rule. (link)
|
Swarbrick also tells Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger that “we’ve got to get out of this position where the vast majority of the [NIL] transactions occurring are not what they are being characterized as. Educational institutions ought to be embarrassed to be part of it. ‘We’re going to conduct a fraud here!’” Swarbrick adds: “If we can’t start to get ourselves to where we can make rational decisions…and enforce them, the future will be more than one athletic association. I can tell you that. … The NCAA spent so much time and wasted so much energy and money defending amateurism, which is a ridiculous proposition. Somebody has to explain to me someday why amateurism is a positive characteristic. No one ever said that the babysitter’s experience would be a lot better if we didn’t pay him or her.” (link)

The Post & Courier’s Sapakoff argues in support of South Carolina AD Tanner’s extension and raise, submitting that “he’s underrated by today’s bottom-line athletic director standards, mostly having to do with the bottom line.” Sapakoff goes on to acknowledge that the hires of former Gamecocks FB HC Muschamp and Baseball HC Holbrook turned out to be “losses,” but notes FB HC Beamer’s hire appears to be a win. “You are who you hire, and had Beamer flopped Tanner likely would have been ousted by now. Holbrook made perfect sense at the time, and was graded on a tough Tanner performance curve.” Beyond HC hires, Sapakoff points out that Gamecock Club revenue is up $1.08M from last year, membership is up by 1,817 and major giving is up by $5.4M. Gamecock Club CEO Hiott: “Obviously, football enthusiasm is a factor in the upswing, but I would say that the reorganization we did this past summer in the Gamecock Club has just as much to do with the increase in both revenue and membership. Coach Tanner led the charge on that for us.” (link)

AD/Chief of Staff & SWA Simon-O’Neill for their handling of the numerous allegations surrounding former Swimming HC McKeever. “Attorneys hired by the university have begun contacting current and former Cal swimmers and their parents as part of a follow-up investigation to an eight-month, $2-million probe that led to McKeever’s firing on January 31, according to three people familiar with the investigation.” (link)

U.S. Senators Murphy (D-CT) and Blumenthal (D-CT) have sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security asking it to allow international student-athletes to participate in NIL deals. We believe this status quo is fundamentally unfair.” Full letter. (link)

TCU continues to reap the rewards of last football season, as On3’s Maisel observes: “From admissions to attendance, from fundraising to merchandise, from media impressions to website visits to emails opened, the benefits of a 13-2 season have poured into the Fort Worth campus. … The evidence for that may be in the 29.2B media impressions that TCU made last season (estimated worth: $3.4B).” Assoc. Vice Chancellor/Assoc. AD for Development and Frog Club Levy adds that it took just six weeks to secure funding for a $40M campaign to renovate the Human Performance Center and build a Football Performance Center. “That was a project that we thought would probably take us 15 months in a normal cycle.” Maisel also points out the Investors Society, which includes those who donate $50K above what supporters pay for tickets and parking, had 24 members to start the season. It now has 111, who have committed a total of $51M. (link)

The actual basketballs seem to be a big deal to some of squads remaining in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. I don’t think it’s affecting me personally this tournament, but it’s been something the guys talk about in the locker room.” Crimson Tide HC Oats adds: “I do think it would be a lot better if the NCAA mandated a particular ball. World Athletics announces it will bar any athlete who has gone through male puberty from female competitions. The Wall Street Journal’s Radnofsky and Bachman also report the “ban came as the federation also unveiled new restrictions for female competitors with differences in sex developments that will apply across all running distances and throwing events. … World Athletics said it based its limits on transgender female athletes around male puberty, rather than testosterone levels, after ‘it became apparent that there was little support within the sport’ for using testosterone levels as a marker. ”President Coe: “The World Athletics Council has today taken the decisive action to protect the female category in our sport, and to do so by restricting the participation of transgender and DSD athletes.” (link)
