NCAA President Charlie Baker will be “shocked” if the DI Board of Directors’ proposal to begin awarding NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament units has any issues gaining approval in January. “I think this is all critically important to us and to the sport generally and to women's sports, since this is in some respects a premier women's collegiate athletic event every year. And I think it's only going to get more so going forward, which is going to be great.” Baker also says of the NCAA’s media rights agreement and the decision not to offer women’s hoops separately: “I can tell you that from where I sat, ending up with an agreement with ESPN that will make it possible for us to create a separate value for the women’s basketball tournament was a major part of our strategy going into those negotiations, because we wanted to be in a position to put a structure like this in place. I know it was something that for many people around the organization – both membership and folks in Indianapolis – was an important element of that entire strategy in that whole negotiating process.” Additionally, Baker believes the House settlement will not hinder the NCAA’s ability to pay out the units. “I view it as a completely separate issue. … The schools that were part of the community that put the rules in place for which the suits are based on [and] the formulas that have been developed and voted on by the membership are going to be required to finance their piece as well. But that should have no impact at all on the way this program works.” (link, link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker covers several topics with the Charleston Gazette-Mail’s Taylor Kennedy, including keeping some “regionality” with the non-conference football schedule, “especially when you’re in a conference that has such a geographic spread. Getting Cincinnati in as a conference game now, and to a certain degree, UCF, those are good games for us. There’s not a lot of natural rivalries and natural connections to a lot of our opponents.” That said, Baker notes there are no plans in the works to play in-state rival Marshall. “I wouldn’t say that we’re never going to play Marshall, but it certainly isn’t high on the priority list of the way we’re building our schedules.” Baker says he’s seen nearly every Power 4 football and basketball venue and noticed that “there is premium seating inventory, suite club lounges and seating. [We are in] the bottom quartile…in both of those. That puts a real constraint on us. Our budget has grown. It’s not grown over the last five to 10 years at the same clip that a lot of our peers have grown at. The reason why is that most of those other institutions have opened up additional seating. It’s important that we fully explore ways to create that premium inventory.” More from Baker. (link)

The Fresno Bee’s Robert Kuwada wonders whether Fresno State can renovate Valley Children’s Stadium, home of the Bulldogs’ football team, while carrying debt on the basketball team’s Save Mart Center. President Saul Jiménez-Sandoval says in a statement: “Fresno State remains committed to maintaining and enhancing our facilities to provide the best possible environment for our students, athletes, and the broader community. With the recent hiring of Garrett Klassy as our new athletic director, we are confident in our path forward. Garrett brings extensive experience in capital improvement projects, which is a critical asset for advancing our ‘Elevate’ athletics master plan. As we navigate our next steps, our goal is to strike a balance between necessary investments in our facilities and maintaining the university’s overall financial health.” Meanwhile, Kuwada notes the athletic department had a budget deficit of $2.8M in FY23, adding: “Another seven-figures loss is expected in 2023-24 and university funding to the department, its largest source of revenue, is likely to be cut again this year.” Also: “Will any renovation have to wait until 2031, when the university is scheduled to be out from under the $36M remaining on the Save Mart Center capital lease obligation? That includes a $10.3M principal and interest payment in 2024-25.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos shares some takeaways from the Personnel & Recruiting Symposium, where one high-level SEC personnel staffer called for shutting down the spring portal altogether. Nakos notes that while the spring window was previously short on “elite talent,” it has “turned into a time to unload scholarships or for players to renege on deals signed in the winter and get a last-minute pay bump. Some staffers pointed out to On3 that programs have altered schedules, so spring games are slated after the portal closes.” Meanwhile, “multiple staffers told On3 that a 30-day window in December would be ‘perfect.’ They were unfazed about having to deal with the portal during bowl season or the College Football Playoff.” As far as scholarship limits go, a handful of Big Ten staffers tell Nakos they anticipate stopping short of 105 in football. One says: “We will be around 95 and then try to go partial scholarships up to 105.” Others say they will continue offering walk-on opportunities. More from Nakos. (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers is told by a source there is hope that a final decision on roster limits will be made at some point before the early signing period, which begins on November 8, adding: “The biggest question people in our sport have right now is where the scholarship limits will end up when the negotiation process comes to a close.” To that end, Rogers has asked several coaches and ADs what they’re hearing about potential limits and reports: “Multiple SEC coaches believe they will sit anywhere from 23-25 scholarships when the dust settles. The SEC has not decided on if the scholarship total will be a league-wide mandate. There seems to be a mixed bag of opinions in the Big Ten Conference. At least one coach told me a while back he didn’t see the league moving off 11.7 right off the bat. Another coach said his administration had no clarity, and yet another said he was told they’d have access to 20-23 scholarships.” Meanwhile, a “premier mid-major program in the northern half of the country felt like they could get a bump to 15, though staying at 11.7 for the foreseeable future is also still on the table.” Also from Rogers: At least two Big 12 programs believe the limit will be “relatively low, while two other coaches were cautiously optimistic. … One historically successful California mid-major thought they had a pathway to 18-20 scholarships spread out over 34 players. … [And] one Sun Belt athletic director said they thought their league would place a very high priority on the ‘diamond’ sports such as baseball and softball. The idea is to increase scholarships on a ladder over the next three years to somewhere in the 15-25 range.” (link)

David Wadsworth, the court-appointed trustee overseeing the bankruptcy estate of Colorado football student-athlete Shilo Sanders, has asked to hire a special counsel after having “reached an impasse in their discussions concerning the turnover of this (NIL) information, as well as other documents and information,” according to USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer. Wadsworth adds in his request: “While the Debtor (Shilo Sanders) has provided the Trustee with certain NILs, the Trustee needs to confirm he has received all of the NILs and has full information of the use of revenue generated by the NILs.” Federal bankruptcy Judge Michael Romero then approved that request yesterday, although Sanders’ attorneys dispute the notion of an impasse: “At all times during this case, the Debtor (Sanders) has been forthcoming with information and has made his retained professionals, including multiple sets of attorneys, his accountant, and other professionals available to the Trustee.” Attorneys for John Darjean, a security guard who claimed Sanders gave him permanent and severe spinal and nerve injuries, question whether Sanders is hiding assets in LLCs he uses to conduct NIL business. Daktronics reported a gross profit of $222.4M for FY24, up 91% from FY22. SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “The Live Events segment, which booked a $95.9M profit this past fiscal year, continues to lead the way, booking $321.2M in FY24 orders, up from $259.7M in FY23. The company attributed that nearly 24% climb in part to increased demand in the college athletics space. Net sales were up 8.5% year-over-year; 91% of the company’s sales were made in the U.S. And, following Daktronics’ flirtation with serious financial issues in the immediate post-COVID months, the company reported more financial breathing room: cash and cash equivalents stood at $81.3M at the end of FY24, a significantly larger cushion than the conclusion of FY23 when that number was $23.99M. The company took on new long-term debt, which now stands at $53.2M.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education says FAFSA for 2025-26 will be fully available by December 1. The department will begin testing the new form with a limited number of students and institutions on October 1. The phased approach is aimed at ensuring complete functionality when the form fully launches. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona: “Following a challenging 2024-25 FAFSA cycle, the Department listened carefully to the input of students, families, and higher education institutions, made substantial changes to leadership and operations at Federal Student Aid, and is taking a new approach this year that will significantly improve the FAFSA experience. Thanks to the partnership of our stakeholders, we’ve developed a better implementation process for 2025-26. I look forward to continuing to work with our partners to ensure this school year’s FAFSA implementation better serves our nation’s students.” (link)

Former TCU baseball student-athlete Riley Cornelio has filed a new class-action antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA seeking damages for Power 5 student-athletes who were on partial scholarships. The suit also seeks to enjoin NCAA rules limiting the number of scholarships by sport. Cornelio is represented by Garrett Broshuis, the plaintiffs’ attorney in Fontenot v. NCAA. From the suit: “If permitted, NCAA schools would offer more scholarship money to their college baseball players. Certainly the better resourced schools would. The NCAA schools compete for talented baseball players for their baseball teams, and the 11.7 scholarship bylaw is an artificial cap on the amount of scholarship money that schools can provide. As the opening quote makes clear, the rule is harming thousands of baseball players every year. With the cost of attending college at a record high, the harm is substantial. At some schools with high-level baseball teams, like the University of Miami and Texas Christian University, the total cost of attendance now exceeds $70,000 each year. A talented player on a partial scholarship might be expected to pay $40,000 or more per year to attend one of these schools. Absent the bylaw, those same players would pay nothing because they would be on a full scholarship. Over the course of four years, that means the bylaw is harming many baseball players to the tune of six figures.” (link) Full complaint. (link)

A Committee on Infractions panel determined former Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh violated recruiting and inducement rules, engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations, resulting in a four-year show-cause order. According to the NCAA, Harbaugh “denied his involvement in the violations, which were overwhelmingly supported by the record. Harbaugh also refused to participate in a hearing before the committee. Harbaugh's violations of the COVID-19 recruiting dead period are Level II violations, but his unethical conduct and failure to cooperate with the membership's infractions process — specifically, his provision of false or misleading information — is a Level I violation. … Subsumed in the show-cause order is a one-season suspension for Harbaugh.” (link); CBS’ Dennis Dodd notes that Dave Roberts, the panel’s chief hearing officer in this case, threatened to suspend Harbaugh if his attorney (Tom Mars) didn't stop disparaging the NCAA on Twitter. “It got much worse than that.” (link); Mars: “The way I see it, from coach Harbaugh’s perspective, today’s COI decision is like being in college and getting a letter from your high school saying you’ve been suspended because you didn’t sign your yearbook. If I were in coach Harbaugh’s shoes and had an $80M contract as head coach of the Chargers, I wouldn’t pay any attention to the findings of a kangaroo court, which claims to represent the principles of the nation’s most flagrant, repeat violator of the federal antitrust laws.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down which Big 12 budgets are the most and least efficient and observes that by one measure, Iowa State stands out. “According to the Ernst & Young (EY) report (commissioned by Arizona earlier this year)…the Cyclones were the only Big 12 public university that generated above-median revenue growth and below-median expense growth over a recent five-year stretch. Iowa State’s revenue growth (before institutional support) increased by 4.9% annually from 2019 through 2023 — above the Big 12 median of 4.5% annual growth. Meanwhile, the Cyclones’ expenses increased by just 4.9% annually over the same span, compared to the median Big 12 expense growth of 5.6%.” The report also found: Texas Tech generated the highest annual revenue growth over the five-year span (2019-23), 9.9%, but also had the highest annual expense growth, 9.4%. West Virginia’s revenue growth was flat, but the Mountaineers’ expenses grew by just 1.2%. Kansas State was close to zeroing out: Revenue grew by 3.3 % while expenses increased by 3.5%. Meanwhile, Kansas’ revenue grew by 1.3% while its expenses increased by 3.3%. Oklahoma State’s revenue and expenses grew by the same amount: 6.2%. Of the four newcomers from the Pac-12, only Utah produced above-median revenue growth (5.7%). Colorado was next (4.2%), followed by Arizona (3.1%). More data from Wilner. (link)

The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna takes a look inside Northwestern’s Lanny and Sharon Martin Lakeside Facility and notes: “As far as bells and whistles go, the South side certainly contains the most sizzle (and steak). Both the second and third levels of seating will feature four semi-private suites apiece, with dividers set to go up between them. They will still technically be outdoor suites, and they will hold 14 people apiece. The North side football office balcony and AD balcony will be used as suites on game day, with food from Nona Jo’s, the student-athlete dining hall, being served.” The stadium will also include a beer garden for premium ticket holders with seats on the second and third level of the South Side (roughly 900 people). Wildcats Deputy AD/Asst. VP for Development Jesse Marks tells Fortuna: “We've sold through about 90% of our season-ticket base. We've held back single-game sales for everybody to experience the lakefront, and we want everybody to experience the lakefront. … Basically, for those that will be here for the new Ryan Field in 2026, great. This is a bridge to that. For those who won't be there, you're just going to get one of the most memorable experiences that will never happen again at Northwestern. And that sticks out to me.” Lots of photos inside. (link)

More on FIU x Pitbull from Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams, who note the arrangement includes language that “encourages the rapper to film his future music videos on FIU’s campus and wear Panthers apparel while he tours. … In other instances, it is hard to tell which party is truly advantaged by promotional rights that purport to benefit Pitbull. For example, the agreement allows him to have an ‘on-site activation presence’ at FIU booster club events and to highlight the partnership on the internet and elsewhere. And perhaps most bizarrely, Pitbull, whose actual name is Armando Christian Pérez, can now call himself the ‘Official Entrepreneur of FIU Athletics.’” Libit and Novy-Williams add: “The school is still looking for sponsors of its north Everglades concourse, student section and video board, according to a schedule in the agreement. In the event Pitbull’s company, DIMIT LLC, can find sponsors to cover those components, he and FIU will split the revenue, according to the contract.” (link)

Providence is adding men’s and women’s golf as non-scholarship programs with competition to start in the 2025-26 academic year. Friars AD Steve Napolillo: “This is a special time for the College as we restore the men's golf program and add women's golf as a varsity sport. We look forward to competing in the BIG EAST with both our golf programs. Adding these two sports will create additional opportunities for student-athletes and allow them to experience all that Friartown has to offer." (link)

Disney CEO Bob Iger says the company is still engaged in talks with potential strategic partners for ESPN. “I know I’ve sounded like a broken record because I’ve talked about strategic partnerships for ESPN over the last number of quarters. The only thing I can say is, believe it or not, we’re still having conversations about it. We thought and continue to believe there may be opportunities to partner with others, particularly on the content side. And that’s why we’ve continued to explore it.” (link)

In its Q3 earnings call today, Disney reported that its DTC portfolio of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ turned its first profit, producing an operating income of $47M on $6.38B in revenue. Adweek’s Mark Stenberg notes the “achievement is symbolic in many ways, as Disney+ and Hulu still lost $19M, which is itself an improvement of nearly $500M from a year ago. The two services only entered the black when paired with ESPN+, which turned its first profit this quarter.” Disney CEO Bob Iger: “The goal is to grow engagement on the platform. What I mean by that is offering a wider variety of programming, which is why we’re adding news, why we’re adding the ESPN tile to it and why we’re bundling aggressively to give consumers the ability to buy across all of our creative engines. And we feel very bullish about the future of this business.” Overall, Disney brought in a profit of $2.62B for the quarter, following a loss of $460M a year prior, while revenue rose 3.7% to $23.16B. ESPN’s ad revenues increased by 17%. (link)

Meet Bing, Binghamton’s new live bearcat mascot. President Harvey Stenger says having a real-life mascot is a great representation of what the university stands for. “They’re fast, they’re tough and they’re adaptable.
