Oklahoma State AD Weiberg sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss OSU’s new $325M Athletics Vision Plan, which will include a slew of new & upgraded facilities for the Pokes. Weiberg shares his perspective on why now is the right time for a project of this magnitude, though he isn’t ready to disclose exactly how much OSU has raised to date: “It accomplished exactly what it is we were hoping to accomplish by announcing it, is letting people see the overall vision of where we’re going and hopefully get them excited about it, so they could buy into that vision. … It is a big number overall. We’re not really looking at it as that big number. That really is just the sum of the parts, and the way we will look at it is by trying to accomplish each one of those.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

UNC Wilmington AD Bass looks back on his time in Wilmington and forward for the Seahawks, explains some needs remain. “We need a fieldhouse for our outdoor sports that provides locker rooms and sports medicine and offices and meeting space and storage space. That’s the fair thing to do – the kids deserve it. We need to fix Brooks Field. We need to fix the tennis courts. … What we haven’t been able to do, the university has not been able to help us identify major gift prospects that can make transformational gifts (for sports). … We have tried really hard. We’ve failed. We’ve had a donor for three years that we’ve been working for tennis. Stuff evolved. … There’s a willingness here, we’ve just got to find a way.” Full interview. (link)

Yahoo’s Wetzel observes that NCAA President Baker appears to be straying from the free market ideals that helped popularize him as governor of Massachusetts as he pushes for “consumer protection” on the NIL front. “Baker is being naive here, hopefully on purpose. … What Baker is proposing is a claw back of control by claiming the NCAA is just looking out for these poor players who otherwise might get duped by a bad actor who might not fulfill some NIL promise or contract.” Baker’s desire for the NCAA to have knowledge over NIL deals “while also controlling the terms of all deals via its own contract language” is “obtrusive and invasive and limits the free-market potential of student-athletes,” Wetzel argues. “That’s why this is more than a backdoor power play cloaked in well-meaning protectionism. This is the NCAA still not recognizing its athletes will either do just fine on their own or learn some lessons so they do fine on their own the next time.” (link)

A group of LGBTQ activists held a briefing this week to voice their concerns over the WBB Final Four and MBB Final Four being played in Texas given the state’s ban on abortion and transgender athlete participation restrictions. Athlete Ally Founder/Executive Director Taylor: “Although I think greatness is always born out of NCAA athletic performances, it really can never be found in a championship event that ignores the impact of the host city or state legislation on its citizens, visitors, fans or competing athletes.” Former Texas/Oregon WBB student-athlete Prince adds: “It’s not just sports. It’s so much more. We can fight for things that we believe in. We can fight for things surrounding our sport.” (link)

The Gardner-Webb Board of Trustees has removed O. Max Gardner III - the grandson of the school’s namesake - from its membership, citing “malicious, threatening and defamatory conduct.” Allegations against Gardner include threatening to shoot a university contractor; threatening to shoot a university tenant; directing threats and defamatory statements toward President Downs and others; and “engaging in a relentless campaign of lies and innuendo designed to unfairly attack, threaten, defame and undermine the university, President Downs, fellow trustees, and others who work tirelessly to serve students and the university’s Christian Mission.” (link)

Since re-launching three months ago, Twitter Blue has added $11M in mobile subscriptions. TechCrunch notes: “While $11 million is a small figure, we should caveat that this estimate does not cover web-based subscriptions. The firm also can’t break out who is paying for annual or monthly Blue subscriptions. The figures cover the 20 markets where Blue has been launched prior to this week. It wasn’t until yesterday that Twitter made the service available globally.” Legacy Twitter check marks are disappearing on April 1. (link)

On3’s Wittry assesses what Saint Francis Brooklyn’s decision to eliminate its athletic programs means for the overall landscape, and one longtime administrator commenting: “That’s where this stress is coming nationally. It is the small privates. They are struggling and they’re not going to admit it. They’re going to try to roll with it. They’re going to try to prop up that basketball program to make like they’re doing fine.” Meanwhile, the longtime administrator goes on to predict there will be a “canary in the coal mine,” adding that “those small privates, they’re in a world of hurt and I mean a world of hurt with where this thing is headed.” More from Wittry. With Seattle hosting one of the NCAA WBB Tournament regional sites, Seattle U. AD Fink wants a Final Four next: “That’s ultimately the goal. [...] If you’ve spent any time around the Climate Pledge Arena staff and you could see the vision for Seattle sports, then absolutely, you would see there’s just great opportunities with partnership. That’s what it’s all about. It’s being on the big stage.” Climate Pledge Arena General Manager Mattson: “When you do 41 regular-season Kraken and 20 regular-season Storm, they aren’t formulaic where they run themselves, but they do have a pattern. In this case we started some of the setup as early as Sunday. … It ends up being a good eight-day period. I would compare this to an NHL All-Star Game.” (link)

South Carolina WBB HC Staley and UCLA HC Close are among those who believe it’s time the NCAA WBB Tournament receive its own media rights deal. Staley: “We're at that place where we're in high demand. I do believe women's basketball can stand on its own and be a huge revenue-producing sport that could do, to a certain extent, what men's basketball has done for all those other sports, all those other Olympic sports and women's basketball. I do believe we were probably at a place years ago, but until we're able to have the decision-makers give us that opportunity ... It's slowly building up to that because there's proof in the numbers." Close adds: “I think there needs to be a meaningful unit distribution associated with that. I don't think any of us are asking for it to be just like the men. Obviously, they're ahead of us in that deal. But I do think it's the next right step." (link)

The Ringer’s Sherman submits that we are currently in the Upset Era of March Madness and points out that “in the first 27 years after the NCAA introduced the 64-team format for the men’s NCAA tournament, zero 16-seeds beat 1-seeds, and just four 15-seeds knocked off 2-seeds. But in the past 11 tournaments, we’ve seen two 16-over-1 upsets and seven 15-over-2 victories.” Also, “lower seeds are also going on deeper tourney runs than ever: 11 of the 16 Final Four appearances by teams seeded seventh or lower have happened since 2010.” Sherman also notes that just 10 years ago, a 15 seed had yet to make it to the Sweet 16. Now there have been three in the past three years, and Sherman goes on to point out what recent Cinderellas have had in common, starting with knowing one another. Even Fairleigh Dickinson, whose team was filled with newcomers, had a head start on team chemistry, as most of the new players were transfers from St. Thomas Aquinas (DII), where they played for Knights HC Anderson. The teams also excel at a unique style of play, have players who fit their coaches’ personalities, and, perhaps most importantly, play “the game of their lives” when it matters most. (link)

North Texas is upping the ante for premium tickets at FB, MBB & WBB contests on per ticket & per sport bases, not just per ticket account. No data in the article on the average increases for those impacted, however, “...ticket prices for premium seats in men’s basketball also are low compared to its peer schools. UNT will rank ahead of only Rice, UTSA and Charlotte in the new American.” Mean Green AVP/CRO Peck: “The way that I look at it is we’re trying to maximize our revenue streams so that we can be competitive and win championships in our new conference. Our mission hasn’t changed. We’re still trying to build champions and prepare leaders. We can’t do that without support, donations and season ticket growth. Sometimes that requires change.” (link)
