Sportico’s Libit pens an extremely lengthy and complex profile of Winthrop Intelligence/Win AD founders Ben and Drue Moore, observing the duo that built a business on transparency for the college athletics industry also “seem to have discovered the allures of inscrutability, embarking on a series of opaque, risky and invariably failing business pursuits in partnership with a man named Scott Brooks.” Libit characterizes Brooks as an “ex-felon with a court-documented history of mental illness” who has ingratiated himself with the Moores and under whose guidance the Moores have “pursued a hodgepodge of speculative and unfamiliar entrepreneurial endeavors…none of which have proven financially successful—at least not in the conventional sense. All the while, Win AD profits have been funneled through a convoluted asset-concealment scheme involving shell companies, trusts, collusive lawsuits and questionable bankruptcies.” Furthermore, Libit reports “their activities have been denounced in multiple courts, where opposing counsel and at least one judge have suggested the cousins are engaged in an illegal conspiracy.” The details are as numerous as they are multilayered, including Ben’s ex-wife calling Win AD a “cash cow” in divorce proceedings and, “They employed a daily housekeeper, a chef, and private tutors for their children, whom Elizabeth eventually began homeschooling so the family could travel around the world.” Full story, which includes the disclaimer: “Not unlike Win AD’s signature database, this article is built on thousands of public records, including state and federal court filings, police and jail documents.” (link)

Fairleigh Dickinson Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Young tells SBJ’s Smith he reached out to Saint Peter’s to talk about what to expect as a March Madness Cinderella. Young: “The most immediate lift right now comes from brand recognition. It’s a little more of an intangible, but our brand wasn’t super strong. The world is getting to know FDU." Young also remarks that “I would expect that people will be more likely to take my calls now on the sponsorship front because we need a car deal, we need an insurance deal. These are things that are low-hanging fruit for a lot of schools that we’ve been missing out on." (link)

The Athletic’s O’Neil submits that Miami (FL) MBB represents the new reality of college basketball as the Canes go into the Sweet 16 with a “player worth a reported $800K” and a teammate “whose agent threatened to send him packing if he didn’t get a pseudo-salary increase.” O’Neil contends it comes down to the simple question of whether Miami is a “renegade” or “simply ahead of the curve.” MBB HC Larranaga: “I use this analogy. I asked our players if they’ve ever seen Steph Curry in a Subway commercial, and everybody has. I said, ‘OK. That’s NIL.’ You can make some additional money. That’s what NIL was made to do, and that’s what they’re doing.’’ Larranaga also asserts that he has no plans to change. “No one is going to tell me how to run my basketball program. When you’re coming into the gym, you’re going to play the Miami way. When you work with someone else that’s willing to sponsor you, great. That’s like college basketball coaches who have shoe contracts.’’ (link)

Chief U.S. District Judge Lipman dismissed a lawsuit against cheerleading & spirit company Varsity, citing the plaintiff’s “reckless disregard” for procedural rules in the “tortured history of discovery in this antitrust case.” Among the reasons cited, Lipman noted the plaintiff produced nearly 200K documents months after the discovery deadline had passed, adding that such behavior “evinces a nonchalant attitude to the Court’s deadlines.” The lead plaintiff in the suit is American Spirit and Cheer Essentials, an Oklahoma-based cheerleading apparel maker, whose attorney says he “definitely” plans to appeal the ruling, per Sportico’s Libit. SWAC Commissioner McClelland says the league has a “long way to go” to becoming a two-bid league for the NCAA MBB and WBB tournaments. “A lot of it has to do with the schedule. We’re not going to get there playing eight, nine, 10, 11 game guarantees. We’re certainly not unless you go out and win those games. It’s mathematically impossible for you to go on the road for 11 games in a row and think that you’re gonna win eight or nine of those games. … Everybody doesn’t have 11 or 12-game guarantees. Everybody’s not in the same position. But in order for those five or six schools to be able to get to where they need to be, the other five or six schools are going to have to bring their part of it because you can’t enter into conference play with a NET ranking, KenPom ranking, all of these rankings being in the low 100. So even the 90s, 80s, and 70s and then start playing conference schools, and it (NET rating) skyrockets. So the bottom six are going to have to make sure that they carry their weight to be able to bring up the top six in order for us to get out of being just an AQ conference.” (link)

Anthony Travel’s eponymous founder & current EVP, Collegiate for On Location says his company fielded interest from multiple teams about participating in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin. Specifically, Anthony explains: “This year's game when Nebraska and Northwestern were playing was really an inflection point. During the game, I received texts from an SEC head coach, an SEC athletic director, two commissioners, and untold others while they were watching the game. Again, how often on a Saturday during the fall are you sitting around watching a game? That's another value of week zero. Everybody watching the game and seeing the atmosphere that was alluded to here. Our interest is extremely high. This month we'll be signing contracts for our 2027 game, for instance." However, Anthony explains that he and Aer Lingus organizers wanted to bring Florida State not only for its brand, but also based on the relationship Seminoles HC Novell and AD Alford built with game organizers. “There were a lot of people reaching out, we had a couple that I was slow-playing the best we could. We wanted Florida State, so that's how this happened.” (link)

In the third of a three-part series on the state of Pac-12 hoops, JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous webmaster examines two topics simultaneously: corporate sponsors and the health of the conference tournament in Las Vegas and the schools’ commitment to MBB. “There’s a synergy that exists between the two topics that is fascinating to me.” Pac-12 VP of Sales and Sponsorships Tseng says business remains strong, but Canzano notes the league would “have a much easier time attracting new sponsors and even more dollars for the conference if the teams performed better on the court.” Pac-12 Deputy Commissioner Zaninovich adds: “To be fair, the investment in basketball has lagged vs. football. The teams at the top in men’s basketball have been investing consistently over a long period of time.” Zaninovich also acknowledges it may be time for a “reboot” to the league-wide strategy. “We hammer the 75% figure into coaches' heads. Conferences across the board that win 75% of non-conference games in any given year get 50% of their teams in the tournament.” Canzano, meanwhile, points out that corporate partner Pacific Seafood seems more interested in football, though it will “ride out” its current sponsorship deal. “So will the other 27 corporate sponsors. They’re in ‘wait and see’ mode. But it’s time for the men’s basketball programs to give them more to see.” (link)

Those rights could drive up the financial value of the deal significantly.” (link)
