The ACC and Florida State are scheduled to enter mediation next week over their legal dispute, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who contextualizes: “While it is a significant step in the proceedings, the mediation phase…is an expected one and is not guaranteed to produce a settlement decision. The neutral mediator has been chosen, and the two sides, barring something unforeseen, will convene for the talks next week.” Dellenger also points out that “in possibly coincidental timing, next Thursday is an important deadline. Schools in the ACC must give the conference a one-year notice before participating in athletics in another league the following academic year. The annual deadline for such a notice is Aug. 15. It has been long believed that FSU is not planning on giving notice this August.” (link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould joins the Canzano and Wilner podcast and says the two-member league needs to be simultaneously patient and aggressive in plotting its path forward. “We have to have this balance between patience, to see what unfolds, to make sure we don’t jump too quickly but also being aggressive enough to create our own opportunities. There’s no specific timeline that we’ve all agreed to but I think we all understand we have to make progress expeditiously in support of our programs. … We’ll continue to overturn every stone that we know of and try to create some stones we don’t know of to figure out what scenarios are possible.” Asked whether the 10 former Pac-12 schools might work with Pac-12 Enterprises, Gould responds: “I would say that our client contracts – any of our client contracts – are all confidential for any of our outside customers that have agreed to hire us to produce live events for them, but certainly our departing schools are great candidates for us to have conversations with in terms of those possibilities and opportunities.” Canzano asks whether the Pac-12 is open to playing football games on Sundays, and Gould remarks: “Given the circumstances that we’re in, not only do I think we need to be bold and aggressive, and open-minded, but part of that is I think we’re in a situation right now where we can take some risks and do things differently. And I will say these two institutions, because of the loyal fan bases that they have…looking at alternative days at the week for broadcast windows and live events is certainly something that we’re open to and willing to talk about.” What does success look like on The CW? “Given our future aspirations, we have to have strong viewership. … From a brand perspective it will be important too that they're high-quality broadcasts that tell the stories appropriately of our student athletes and these programs, but also we hope it creates some buzz.” Full Q&A. George Mason’s men's basketball team was scheduled for a foreign tour in the Bahamas this week; however, upon arriving at the airport the team reportedly discovered that no flights, hotels, or games had been booked. The trip was subsequently canceled by the hosting company, Revive by The VII Group, despite several boosters and donors already having arrived in the Bahamas, per College Basketball Report. (link); Chris Williams, the organizer of the trip, tells The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman that he takes full responsibility for the cancellation of the trip and that the company he outsourced the flights to never booked them. Williams says the hotels and games were booked and scheduled, but had to be canceled. Williams also insists there is no truth to the report that the team got to the airport before finding out the flights hadn’t been booked. CBS’ Andrew Ivins shares takeaways from this week’s Personnel & Recruiting Symposium in Nashville and notes one thing that stood out was the “number of former NFL scouts now running collegiate scouting departments. It wasn't too long ago that bluebloods focused exclusively on high school recruiting, but with the transfer portal booming, more and more Power Four programs have tabbed former NFL evaluators to spearhead their college scouting operations. And this trend isn't going away, not with the money that's being invested in the transfer portal. One director from an SEC program estimated they'd broken down film and written up reports on close to 3,000 current college players in the past year. Some of that work will be used for advanced scouting, but a majority of it is in preparation for transfer portal windows as they want to be ready to pounce on players they think can help them win. Placing a heavy emphasis on in-league scouting directly reflects the NFL model, where some scouts study the draft class (high school recruiting) and others prepare for free agency (the transfer portal).” (link)

Former student-athletes competing at the Summer Olympics in Paris are calling on college sports leaders to preserve Olympic sports post-House settlement. Former Michigan gymnast Paul Juda, for example, says: "If you want to see success on the Olympic stage, I don't think there's anything better to prep you than NCAA competition. We all said that this (Olympic) competition, we were just going to treat it like NCAA championships. … So I would say to any collegiate program and any collegiate athletic director, if you want to continue to see success in the USA, you're gonna want to fight for that NCAA podium, as well." Former Kentucky track & field student-athlete (discus) Andrew Evans says there “wasn't a ton of structure” in high school. “We just kind of hung out. We took a lot of throws, but the technical stuff was all over the place. The weightlifting I did was for football. There wasn't a focus on performing the best you can for discus. That's what college brings to the table. … It would be tough for the Olympic program to succeed without it. I don't know how you'd identify talent. Most American kids that've been throwing a 1.6 (kilogram) discus in high school aren't just going to start throwing the (Olympic) 2 (kg discus) 65 meters." Southern Utah economics professor David Berri acknowledges the pressure ADs face but pushes back on the notion that the money isn’t there to retain Olympic sports. “You end up with these bizarre scenarios, like the University of Cincinnati during COVID cut their men's soccer program and said 'We just can't afford this.' Then you look up the expense data, and it cost you $500K. You had the money. That's one football coach. An assistant coach." (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce will not be rebranded to include “Dallas” in its name, according to President Mark Rudin, who explains in a note to the campus community: “Based on the feedback received, I cannot support the option of changing the name of our university to Texas A&M University-Dallas. I have informed the Board of Regents and Chancellor Sharp that I will not be pursuing a name change of our university to Texas A&M University-Dallas now or in the future.” The announcement comes after weeks of pushback from students and alumni, many of whom worried that the change would move the school away from its roots in East Texas. Dayton is deliberately reducing its student body and employee payroll as the higher ed landscape continues to shift. Specifically, UD is working to reduce its student headcount by about 10% to 15% and its workforce by a similar amount. The university currently has about 11,000 students overall and 3,700 employees. According to a draft version of UD’s proposed general development plan, full-time undergraduate enrollment could decrease 17% from a peak of 8,650 students in 2020 to about 7,200 students by 2027. VP of Facilities Management and Planning Rick Krysiak: “The population of college-age students…has shrunk and at the same time, of that population, some students are opting out of college and are going to tech school. That means that competition for that smaller student base has become fierce.” (link)

The NCAA Board of Governors unanimously approved $25M in additional funding to award NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament units to participating teams. Baylor President/Board Chair Linda Livingstone: "Investing in women's sports is a priority for the NCAA and for the Board of Governors. Women's sports — and women's basketball in particular — have seen an incredible trajectory in popularity in recent years, and these distribution funds for women's basketball performance should continue to encourage campus and conference-level investment in the women's game to continue that growth." The Board of Governors also directed the governance bodies in all three NCAA divisions to pursue the legislative changes necessary to restructure the existing four DEI committees into one all-encompassing committee focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts following the recommendation of the NCAA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committees Review Working Group. Additionally, the board voted to extend Livingstone as chair for the 2024-25 academic year. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts is making $2.2M annually in base salary as part of his deal which runs through September 30, 2029. The contract also includes a $450K longevity payment that would become due after March 31, 2027, and a $300K payment that would become due two years later. Also from Berkowitz: “Alberts can get bonuses based on Directors Cup and any team championships. If football wins SEC or plays in CFP, he would get $100K – and an additional $150K for the title. Alberts' base salary is fully guaranteed in case of termination w/o cause, subject to duty to mitigate. If Alberts leaves, the buyout he would owe starts at $4M and decreases after April 1, 2026. Owed amount would be cut in half if school president Mark Welsh departs. And Texas A&M did agree to pay the $4.12M that Alberts was known to have owed Nebraska.” (link, link, link)

SBJ’s Rachel Axon posits that “in the wake of a changing economic model, Olympic leaders don’t have to wonder what their collegiate peers might do. They saw it during COVID, where schools around the country cut teams.” As such, USOPC Chief of Sport and Athletic Services Rocky Harris tells Axon: “We want to make sure that they don’t cut the sports that matter most. We have to be careful about just saying, ‘Everything has to stay the same,’ because we know that’s not realistic. Instead, we have to create a more targeted approach and a more customized approach by conference, by region, by school. And making sure they have the data that we have and the understanding of how they’re driving Team USA’s success.” Stanford AD Bernard Muir: “We certainly want to continue our Olympic prowess. It’s part of the fabric of our place, and I know many others have great aspirations of providing the world’s best to compete on the international stage. It’s going to be a fine line to thread the needle here, but we’re hoping we can do that.” (link)

New on Connect: Uni USA President/former UCLA AD Dan Guerrero joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the future of Olympic sports in the U.S., including the impact of a potential revenue-sharing model for college athletics on the broader Olympic sport movement and the place of Olympic sports within the higher education framework. Guerrero also shares details of the 2029 World University Games, set to be hosted in North Carolina, and early momentum for the LA 2028 Olympics. Guerrero: "The intercollegiate model in the United States is the envy of most countries around the world. What has been such a viable and successful enterprise for us has been Olympic sports and what they mean to the future of the Olympic movement. … It’s concerning to me that as we decide where this enterprise is going to go, it's a zero-sum game in terms of resources that are available to the different institutions. Someway, somehow, we need to be able to figure out how we can, in fact, preserve those Olympic sports because they are too valuable not only for our country, but certainly for the world.” Guerrero adds that he believes ADs across the country are committed to doing “everything they can to continue to provide those opportunities to compete at the highest level and ultimately achieve their dreams of competing in the Olympics.” More. James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that her team has “noticed a trend in apparel contracts with Nike shifting to less cash & more product, which isn't a big deal if you're a school that purchases on top of the in kind. Also seeing provisions trying to stop coaches from wearing other brand pants (like lululemon). These apparel contracts are another example of 22% on top of already a large percent of ‘revenue’ aka gear and apparel going to athletes. These amounts (including the in kind) are picked up in Category 15, which is in the Average Shared Revenue formula. One more example of a tax on what's already going to athletes. The other glaring example is grants-in-aid (aka scholarships!) and other grant-type NCAA revenue distribution in Cat 12.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved expanded use of one-way communication devices in baseball beginning with the 2025 season. Under the new rule, a player on the field or coaches in the third base or first base boxes can initiate one-way communication to relay signals to offensive or defensive players. Previously, the use of an exclusively one-way electronic communication device from the dugout to the field for the purpose of relaying the pitch or play call was allowed. The use of other electronic devices in the dugout remains prohibited. The panel also approved a measure that requires batters to be alert and ready to hit with 8 or more seconds remaining in the 20-second time limit; the allowance of a double first base as an optional rule for all games, including NCAA championship competition; a rule stating that on force play slide rule calls, the ball will remain live until the play has fully concluded, and more. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday also approved new rules on the shoes that competitors can wear and a modification to rules on lane violations in men's and women's track and field. The shoe rule brings the NCAA in line with World Athletics rules and allows student-athlete performances to be accepted for eligibility in world competitions. The lane violations rule centers on indoor and outdoor track and field races run on a curve. Competitors will face disqualification for stepping on or over the lane line to their left with more than one step anywhere on a curve for the entirety of the race. Other rule changes include: allowing pacing light technology at non-championship competitions; better defining the roles of meet management; and adding the competition manager position as part of meet management, among others.
